Electric vehicles (EVs) are a strong weapon in the world’s efforts against global warming. But the effects of EVs depend on what country you are in.
The Radiant Energy Group (REG) tried to learn the difference in gas emissions caused by a gasoline vehicle and from charging an electric vehicle. The study collected statistics on the emissions caused by charging a Tesla Model 3 to drive 100 kilometers with the emissions coming from an average gasoline car driven the same distance.
Countries where charging an electric vehicle is cleaner than driving a gasoline-powered car use a lot of hydroelectric, nuclear or solar power.
Sales of electric cars are rising the fastest in Europe.Data from REG suggests that EVs in Poland and Kosovo actually create more carbon emissions because their electric systems depend so much on coal.In other European countries, however, EVs result in reduced emissions.
The countries with the biggest carbon gas savings from EVs use a lot of nuclear and hydroelectric power.First was Switzerland at 100 percent carbon savings over gasoline vehicles.Next was Norway at 98 percent, France at 96 percent, Sweden at 95 percent and Austria 93 percent. The research was based on public data on Europe’s electricity usage and the European Environment Agency (EEA).
The countries which showed the lowest savings were Cyprus at 4 percent, Serbia 15 percent, Estonia 35 percent and the Netherlands 37 percent.
Germany and Spain create a lot of electricity from the sun and wind. But the sun and wind do not add to a country’s electricity system equally throughout the day.
For this reason, the amount of carbon emissions saved by driving an EV depends on the time of day it is being charged.Charging in the afternoon, when there is more sun and wind, saves 16 to 18 percent more carbon than at night when electricity systems are more likely to be using gas or coal.
Automakers including General Motors, Stellantis and Volkswagen have set targets to sell mainly electric vehicles in Europe in the coming years.US car manufacturer General Motors said it would have all new electric cars in two years.

“I have to be home earlier than all my friends,” my teenage son, Jordan, said. “I’m seventeen years old, and I still have a curfew (宵禁). Legally, I’m practically an adult.”
“You’re not an adult,” I said. “You’re still in high school. I love you, and I want to protect you. As long as you live at home, there will be certain rules to follow. But those rules exist because I love you, not because I’m trying to control you.”
He rolled his eyes and walked away. I felt tears prick my eyes. Parenting teenagers was so challenging. How could I make Jordan see that I only wanted the best for him?
We have a black pet cat named Meatball and Jordan likes it very much. Meatball just likes being able to come and go as he pleases.
One night in January, temperatures were unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside.
“It’s too cold out there, Bud,” I said. “You’ll freeze.” He stared at me and meowed again.
The next morning, I couldn’t find Meatball. I asked Jordan if he had seen him. Jordan nodded. “I let him out last night.” My mouth dropped open. “He was outside all night? It was freezing!”
Jordan shrugged,“He was sitting by the door, meowing. I could tell he wanted to go out.”
I grabbed my coat and rushed outside, praying the cat had survived the night. It took me several minutes to find him curled (蜷作一团) under a car. I picked him up, unsure if he was alive or dead. As I carried him into the house, I saw him open his eyes a bit. “Thank goodness,” I murmured. I called the vet (兽医) immediately and the next few hours were scary.
“I’m sorry, Buddy,” I heard Jordan say over and over again. “Mom was right. Even though you didn’t want to, I should have made you stay inside where it was safe.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
As I drove to the vet’s office, Jordan sat in the back, holding Meatball inside his coat for warmth.
On the drive home, surprisingly, Jordan apologised to me.

What Will Schools Be Like in the Future?
With the rapid development of science and technology, everything has been changing with each passing day. Many people are wondering what schools will be like in the future.
First of all, human teachers and robots will work together. The latter won’t take the place of the former; instead, they will serve as teachers’ assistants and do some simple jobs, such as correcting homework and disciplining students.Secondly, there will be virtual classrooms. That is to say, students can have lessons both at school or at home.Thirdly, students’ learning will become more personalized. Each student will get learning materials that are suitable to them.
I firmly believe everything will become easier and better thanks to science and technology.Education is no exception.
Ⅳ.
As I drove to the vet’s office, Jordan sat in the back, holding Meatball inside his coat for warmth. I could hear him talking to the cat, apologising in soft tones. He was clearly near tears. After examining him, the vet determined that Meatball had a mild case of frostbite on his paws, ears, and tail, but no permanent damage. “But this could have been bad,” the vet cautioned. “This little guy needs to stay inside overnight, whether he wants to or not.”
On the drive home, surprisingly, Jordan apologised to me.“I’m sorry for how I’ve acted about my curfew,” he said. “I know you’re doing it because you love me and want to keep me safe.” I felt a lump in my throat. “Thank you, Bud,” I said. “I’m glad you understand.” I smiled through tears, so grateful that our frozen Meatball was going to be all right and for the important lesson he’d taught my son about loving others enough to protect them, whether they want us to or not.

I think ...; It seemed to me that ...; As far as I’m concerned, I could say that ...; It is/sounds true that ...
What can we say about ...?
What is the man’s/woman’s attitude towards ...?
What is the man’s/woman’s opinion of ...?
What does the man/woman think of/find ...?
What does the man/woman mean ...?
How does the man/woman feel/think about the ...?

SHOULD WE FIGHT NEW TECHNOLOGY? This morning, I saw the shocking headline:“Passenger Dies When Car Crashes in Driverless Mode”.In the article, various people said that the public should oppose the idea of developing driverless cars. They said that some advances in technology were unnecessary and could even be dangerous.Hence, we should cease accepting technology just because it is new.[1]The newspaper reported that the car company had already apologised for the accident, but the families of the deceased said it was not enough.Nevertheless, the company still claimed that most people would be travelling in driverless cars one day soon. [2]On the one hand, there are many different groups of people around the world who live happily in the absence of new technology.Probably the most well known are the Amish, a group of Christians living in rural America. They do not own or drive cars, watch TV, or use the Internet. They have lived mainly as farmers since the 18th century, and they will probably be living the same way in the distant future. They advocate a simple life with an emphasis on hard work, family, and community. They think that is better than caring about luxuries or following the lives of the rich and famous. It could even be argued that the Amish’s quality of life is better since they live in and appreciate the natural environment rather than living in large, polluted cities. On the one hand引出开头,使用了happily、 better、 even等词汇表明反对新技术者的态度。

On the other hand, new technology has provided people everywhere with many benefits over the years. For example, the latest weather-tracking computer programs give people lots of warnings about potential natural disasters, which saves many lives.[3]Moreover, the Internet has made it possible for friends and family to keep in touch easily even if they are on opposite sides of the world. It has also made finding opportunities in life much easier, as it allows people to make larger networks of friends through using social media. Personally, I have benefited quite a lot from technological advances.I found my career as an AI designer through a social media network. My health monitor, which I wear all the time, has also helped me get into the best shape of my life.Of course, when new technology changes the way we live, it can be a scary prospect.Nevertheless, I will always look on the positive side of change and accept it rather than resist it. On the other hand起到承上启下的作用,Moreover起到了语意递进的作用。

W:Would you like to tell me what is a nanobot?
M:Certainly.A nanobot is a microscopic robot.
W:What can it do for us?
M:While they are still in the development stage, it is thought that in the future, nanobots can be used within the human body.
W:Wow, it is a fantasy. Can you tell me in detail, please?
M:No problem. It can deliver carefully targeted doses of medicine to areas in the body that need them.
W:It is such exciting news to us human beings.
(Text 2)
M:Have you heard of the UA HealthBox?
W:No.What’s that?
M:It was created by the company Under Armour. It’s a new set of three smart devices — a wristband, a scale, and a heart-rate monitor. They all record information about you when you exercise, which is then collected in the app, UA Record.
W:I like that all of the information goes into one app, but it doesn’t sound very different from other products that are already out there.
M:Check this out.You can touch the screen of the wristband to signal that you’re starting or ending an activity. Then the scale measures your body fat and weight, while the monitor tracks your heart rate. You wear the heart monitor on a band around your chest. The best part about it is that you can set goals and measure your progress.
W:How much does it cost?
M:The whole set is around 400, but you can just buy the wristband if you want, which is 180.
W:Wow, that’s not exactly a bargain, is it?
(Text 3)
M:Would you consider buying a self-driving car?
W:I don’t know.I guess I’d have to research a bit more about them before making that decision.
M:It will probably be a while before we are able to buy them, anyway. We might be seeing self-driving trucks on the road pretty soon, though.Google wants to change the commercial trucking industry.Right now, there are over three million truck drivers in the US, so adding self-driving trucks would likely take away a lot of jobs. But many drivers might still be able to accompany their trucks, and get a full night’s sleep in the process.
W:Truck drivers cause a lot of accidents on the freeway, so I think I’d like to see self-driving trucks. It would make me feel safer on the road.
M:Really?I think it might make me feel less safe.A human driver is much more likely to react quickly to something unexpected.
(Text 4)
Most houses take months to build, but your next house could be constructed in just a day, using a 3D printer.A new company in California has built a 400-square-foot house in only 24 hours. The house was printed as a whole, rather than in pieces that require to be put together. It only cost 10,000 to make, including the building material, electrical wires, lights, and everything in the bathroom and kitchen. This is not the first printed house, of course. A printed castle was produced in Russia, and it only took 24 hours to produce.Several years ago, a Chinese company built ten small houses in 24 hours. It only cost 5,000 to build one of the Chinese houses, probably because they were made from a mix of construction waste and glass pieces.3D printed commercial homes would still be cheaper. But engineers are excited about how this technology could be used.Small houses could be built from recycled material in developing countries, and someday, buildings like these could even be put on the moon.Mars might be a little too far away, for remote construction, though, even if a 3D printer could be sent there.

(Text 1)
W:Would you like to tell me what is a nanobot?
M:Certainly.A nanobot is a microscopic robot.
W:What can it do for us?
M:While they are still in the development stage, it is thought that in
the future, nanobots can be used within the human body.
W:Wow, it is a fantasy. Can you tell me in detail, please?
M:No problem. It can deliver carefully targeted doses of medicine to
areas in the body that need them.
W:It is such exciting news to us human beings.
(Text 2)
M:Have you heard of the UA HealthBox?
W:No.What’s that?
M:It was created by the company Under Armour. It’s a new set of
three smart devices — a wristband, a scale, and a heart-rate
monitor. They all record information about you when you exercise,
which is then collected in the app, UA Record.
W:I like that all of the information goes into one app, but it doesn’t
sound very different from other products that are already out there.
M:Check this out.You can touch the screen of the wristband to signal
that you’re starting or ending an activity. Then the scale measures your
body fat and weight, while the monitor tracks your heart rate. You
wear the heart monitor on a band around your chest. The best part
about it is that you can set goals and measure your progress.
W:How much does it cost?
M:The whole set is around 400, but you can just buy the
wristband if you want, which is 180.
W:Wow, that’s not exactly a bargain, is it?
(Text 3)
M:Would you consider buying a self-driving car?
W:I don’t know.I guess I’d have to research a bit more about them
before making that decision.
M:It will probably be a while before we are able to buy them,
anyway. We might be seeing self-driving trucks on the road pretty
soon, though.Google wants to change the commercial trucking
industry.Right now, there are over three million truck drivers in the
US, so adding self-driving trucks would likely take away a lot of
jobs. But many drivers might still be able to accompany their trucks,
and get a full night’s sleep in the process.
W:Truck drivers cause a lot of accidents on the freeway, so I think
I’d like to see self-driving trucks. It would make me feel safer on the
road.
M:Really?I think it might make me feel less safe.A human driver is
much more likely to react quickly to something unexpected.
Most houses take months to build, but your next house could be
constructed in just a day, using a 3D printer.A new company in
California has built a 400-square-foot house in only 24 hours. The
house was printed as a whole, rather than in pieces that require to be
put together. It only cost 10,000 to make, including the building
material, electrical wires, lights, and everything in the bathroom
and kitchen. This is not the first printed house, of course.
(Text 4)
A printed castle was produced in Russia, and it only took 24 hours to
produce.Several years ago, a Chinese company built ten small houses in
24 hours. It only cost 5,000 to build one of the Chinese houses,
probably because they were made from a mix of construction waste and
glass pieces.3D printed commercial homes would still be cheaper. But
engineers are excited about how this technology could be used.Small
houses could be built from recycled material in developing countries, and
someday, buildings like these could even be put on the moon.Mars might
be a little too far away, for remote construction, though, even if a 3D
printer could be sent there.

I think ...; It seemed to me that ...; As far as I’m concerned, I could
say that ...; It is/sounds true that ...
What can we say about ...?
What is the man’s/woman’s attitude towards ...?
What is the man’s/woman’s opinion of ...?
What does the man/woman think of/find ...?
What does the man/woman mean ...?
How does the man/woman feel/think about the ...?
A. He doesn’t like the colour.
B. He likes it very much.
C. He has no idea about it.
How does the man like the skirt?
W:Dad, what do you think of my new skirt? Do you like it?
M:Oh, it’s very lovely, darling.
W:Oh, dad.Thank you.
回答说:“Oh, it’s very lovely, darling.”

C. Favourable. D. Ambiguous.
Step 1
SHOULD WE FIGHT NEW TECHNOLOGY?
This morning, I saw the shocking headline:“Passenger Dies When Car
Crashes in Driverless Mode”.In the article, various people said that the
public should oppose the idea of developing driverless cars. They said that
some advances in technology were unnecessary and could even be
dangerous.Hence, we should cease accepting technology just because it
is new.[1]The newspaper reported that the car company had already
apologised for the accident, but the families of the deceased said it was
not enough.Nevertheless, the company still claimed that most people
would be travelling in driverless cars one day soon.
[2]On the one hand, there are many different groups of people
around the world who live happily in the absence of new
technology.Probably the most well known are the Amish, a group of
Christians living in rural America. They do not own or drive cars, watch
TV, or use the Internet. They have lived mainly as farmers since the 18th
century, and they will probably be living the same way in the distant
future. They advocate a simple life with an emphasis on hard work,
family, and community. They think that is better than caring about
luxuries or following the lives of the rich and famous. It could even be
argued that the Amish’s quality of life is better since they live in and
appreciate the natural environment rather than living in large, polluted
cities.
On the other hand, new technology has provided people everywhere
with many benefits over the years. For example, the latest weather-
tracking computer programs give people lots of warnings about potential
natural disasters, which saves many lives.[3]Moreover, the Internet
has made it possible for friends and family to keep in touch easily even if
they are on opposite sides of the world. It has also made finding
opportunities in life much easier, as it allows people to make larger
networks of friends through using social media.
Personally, I have benefited quite a lot from technological advances.I
found my career as an AI designer through a social media network. My
health monitor, which I wear all the time, has also helped me get into
the best shape of my life.Of course, when new technology changes the
way we live, it can be a scary prospect.Nevertheless, I will always look
on the positive side of change and accept it rather than resist it.
Step 2
On the one hand引出开头,使用了happily、
On the other hand起到承上启下的
使用了benefited quite a lot、 best、 positive等词汇

Electric vehicles (EVs) are a
strong weapon in the world’s efforts against global warming. But the effects
of EVs depend on what country you are in.
The Radiant Energy Group (REG) tried to learn the difference in
gas emissions caused by a gasoline vehicle and from charging an electric
vehicle. The study collected statistics on the emissions caused by charging a
Tesla Model 3 to drive 100 kilometers with the emissions coming from an
average gasoline car driven the same distance.
Countries where charging an electric vehicle is cleaner than driving a
gasoline-powered car use a lot of hydroelectric, nuclear or solar power.
Sales of electric cars are rising the fastest in Europe.Data from REG
suggests that EVs in Poland and Kosovo actually create more carbon
emissions because their electric systems depend so much on coal.In other
European countries, however, EVs result in reduced emissions.
The countries with the biggest carbon gas savings from EVs use a lot
of nuclear and hydroelectric power.First was Switzerland at 100 percent
carbon savings over gasoline vehicles.Next was Norway at 98 percent,
France at 96 percent, Sweden at 95 percent and Austria 93 percent. The
research was based on public data on Europe’s electricity usage and the
European Environment Agency ( EEA ).
The countries which showed the lowest savings were Cyprus at 4
percent, Serbia 15 percent, Estonia 35 percent and the Netherlands 37
percent.
EEA
Germany and Spain create a lot of electricity from the sun and
wind. But the sun and wind do not add to a country’s electricity system
equally throughout the day.
For this reason, the amount of carbon emissions saved by driving an
EV depends on the time of day it is being charged.Charging in the
afternoon, when there is more sun and wind, saves 16 to 18 percent
more carbon than at night when electricity systems are more likely to be
using gas or coal.
Automakers including General Motors, Stellantis and Volkswagen
have set targets to sell mainly electric vehicles in Europe in the coming
years.US car manufacturer General Motors said it would have all new
electric cars in two years.

In 2005, Calvin Echevarria
was on top of his game.He had two jobs, bought a house and was raising
a 3-year-old daughter with his wife. But suddenly, it felt like it was all
being taken away.He could no longer work as a FedEx driver because he
was going blind.
He was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy.“All I care is about my
wife and my daughter,” he told CBS News.“I want to see my daughter
grow up.”
Echevarria at first worked on developing independent living skills like
walking with a cane. But he wanted to learn more — like skills that would
be useful for a job. That’s when he found Lighthouse Works in Orlando, a
company that creates jobs for the visually impaired and blind.
“Seven out of ten Americans who are visually impaired are not in the
workforce,” said Kyle Johnson, the president and CEO of Lighthouse
Works.“And we knew that people who are blind are the most highly
educated disability group on the planet. So, we created Lighthouse Works
to help them to work and contribute.”
What began as Lighthouse Central Florida in 1976 has evolved. The
organization originally focused on helping the blind and visually impaired
learn independent living skills and enter the workforce. But in 2011, they
created Lighthouse Works in Orlando, their own company that provides
call center and supply chain services and hires people who are blind or
visually impaired. At Lighthouse Works, nearly half of the employees are
visually impaired or blind.
Echevarria said working in a fully accessible office space, with
other visually impaired people who can relate to him, is an added
benefit.“It gives me a purpose. It makes me feel better because I can
actually be proud of myself,” he said. His original worry was not being
able to be there for his daughter. Now, he’s her mentor, because she’s an
employee at Lighthouse Works as well.

What Will Schools Be Like in the Future?
With the rapid development of science and technology, everything
has been changing with each passing day. Many people are wondering what
schools will be like in the future.
First of all, human teachers and robots will work together. The latter
won’t take the place of the former; instead, they will serve as teachers’
assistants and do some simple jobs, such as correcting homework and
disciplining students.Secondly, there will be virtual classrooms. That is to
say, students can have lessons both at school or at home.Thirdly,
students’ learning will become more personalized. Each student will get
learning materials that are suitable to them.
I firmly believe everything will become easier and better thanks to
science and technology.Education is no exception.
“I have to be home earlier than all my friends,” my teenage son,
Jordan, said. “I’m seventeen years old, and I still have a curfew (宵
Legally, I’m practically an adult.”
“You’re not an adult,” I said. “You’re still in high school. I love
you, and I want to protect you. As long as you live at home, there will
be certain rules to follow. But those rules exist because I love you, not
because I’m trying to control you.”
He rolled his eyes and walked away. I felt tears prick my eyes.
Parenting teenagers was so challenging. How could I make Jordan see that
I only wanted the best for him?
We have a black pet cat named Meatball and Jordan likes it very
much. Meatball just likes being able to come and go as he pleases.
One night in January, temperatures were unusually low. Meatball
stood at the door, meowing to go outside.
“It’s too cold out there, Bud,” I said. “You’ll freeze.” He
stared at me and meowed again.
The next morning, I couldn’t find Meatball. I asked Jordan if he had
seen him. Jordan nodded. “I let him out last night.” My mouth dropped
open. “He was outside all night? It was freezing!”
Jordan shrugged,“He was sitting by the door, meowing. I could
tell he wanted to go out.”
I grabbed my coat and rushed outside, praying the cat had survived
the night. It took me several minutes to find him curled
under a car. I picked him up, unsure if he was alive or dead. As I carried
him into the house, I saw him open his eyes a bit. “Thank goodness,”
I murmured. I called the vet (兽医) immediately and the next few hours
were scary.
“I’m sorry, Buddy,” I heard Jordan say over and over again.
“Mom was right. Even though you didn’t want to, I should have made
you stay inside where it was safe.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
As I drove to the vet’s office, Jordan sat in the back, holding
Meatball inside his coat for warmth.
On the drive home, surprisingly, Jordan apologised to me.
As I drove to the vet’s office, Jordan sat in the back, holding
Meatball inside his coat for warmth. I could hear him talking to the cat,
apologising in soft tones. He was clearly near tears. After examining him,
the vet determined that Meatball had a mild case of frostbite on his paws,
ears, and tail, but no permanent damage. “But this could have been
bad,” the vet cautioned. “This little guy needs to stay inside
overnight, whether he wants to or not.”
On the drive home, surprisingly, Jordan apologised to me.“I’m
sorry for how I’ve acted about my curfew,” he said. “I know you’re
doing it because you love me and want to keep me safe.” I felt a lump in
my throat. “Thank you, Bud,” I said. “I’m glad you understand.” I
smiled through tears, so grateful that our frozen Meatball was going to be
all right and for the important lesson he’d taught my son about loving
others enough to protect them, whether they want us to or not.
