Edison Juel was on a family trip on Hawaii’s Big Island when the devastating wildfires occurred in the island of Maui, which have killed 115 people and nearly destroyed the town of Lahaina.Edison, whose nickname is Eddie, overheard his parents watching news reports of the tragedy.
“It was Wednesday afternoon, we had the news on, and he asked me to turn the TV off because he said that made him too sad,” Eddie’s mother, Ami Juel told USA TODAY.“At that point, I realised he was really paying attention and listening, that we needed to actually address it.I hadn’t really intended to tell him about it necessarily.”
Ami explained to Eddie where the fires were and that he was safe but that many people were hurt. While it was difficult for Eddie to comprehend the devastation at a young age, it was easy for him to want to help people in any way he could.
Eddie shared the idea of starting a stand, similar to one he had seen on a previous trip to Colorado, and donating all the money to support victims of the wildfires.Ami said she and her husband immediately supported the idea and set up a lemonade stand on Saturday on their busy Seattle street.

(2024·厦门高二下学期质检)Scientists have reported that Antarctica’s sea ice is at a record low level. That’s worrying because the sea ice is an important part of the Earth’s cooling system. It’s not yet clear if the low sea ice level is temporary, or part of a changing climate pattern.
Every year, the sea ice at the South Pole goes through a cycle of melting and freezing. In the summer, the huge masses of sea ice melt to their smallest point.Over the colder winter months, the sea ice grows and grows until it covers an incredibly wide area.Usually, the sea ice covers the greatest area (its “maximum extent”) around 23 September, as winter ends at the South Pole.
Scientists have been measuring the area of the sea ice in Antarctica since 1979.For most of this time, Antarctica has seemed to be almost unaffected by the changing weather conditions experienced in other parts of the globe. In fact, until recent years, Antarctica’s sea ice area mainly set records for growing.
That began to change around 2016.Now, for several years, the area of Antarctica’s sea ice has been shrinking (减少).Antarctic sea ice has been in sharp decline in recent years and its winter maximum reached a record low this year.
Scientists are still trying to understand what is driving the change in Antarctica. One likely cause for the change is the rising temperatures of the world’s oceans.Ted Scambos, a research scientist at the University of Colorado, says Antarctica’s ice levels have always changed some, but the sharp loss this year is “pointing towards warmer ocean conditions around the continent”.
The new low record has scientists worried. The sea ice is important, because it helps cool the planet. When it’s frozen, sea ice reflects sunlight back out into space. But when the sea ice melts, the water left behind is darker, and absorbs more heat. The concern is that the melting sea ice could start a cycle that might cause even more ice to melt.
5.When does the sea ice in Antarctica reach the largest point?
A.In July. B.In August.
C.In September. D.In October.
6.What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Antarctica’s sea ice area’s growing.
B.Antarctica’s sea ice area’s shrinking.
C.Antarctica’s being affected by the weather.
D.Antarctica’s being unaffected by the weather.
7.What does Ted Scambos stress in Paragraph 5?
A.The harm of rising temperatures.
B.The necessity to protect Antarctica.
C.The change of Antarctica’s sea levels.
D.The reason for the change in Antarctica.
8.What will happen when the sea ice melts?
A.Less heat will be absorbed.
B.More sunlight will be reflected.
C.Oceans will see lower temperatures.
D.Oceans will see higher temperatures.

“Is this all I got?” asked my daughter, Allison. “I asked for a new cell phone and a laptop!”
“Where are the rest of the presents?” asked my son, Blake. “ I wanted a set of golf clubs and a skateboard!”
Money had been tight, and as a single parent, I was doing the best I could. My children received almost everything on their wish lists when their father was alive, but things were different now. Blake was now thirteen years old and Allison twelve. I knew we had somewhat spoiled (宠坏) them. My feelings were hurt, but I didn’t want to show it. I was also very disappointed in their reactions to their presents.
The months went by quickly. I was planning our next Christmas celebration in my head a little every day, for I was determined to teach them a lesson.
I contacted agencies to find a family that desperately needed help. They were a low-income family, and my children needed to know they existed and what they had to go through.
That Christmas we did all the usual traditions, such as putting up a tree. But as Christmas Eve drew closer, there were still no presents under the tree.
I said that we would be giving gifts to a family that truly needed them. They needed to see what it was like to need essentials such as clothing and food. I went on to explain my disappointment in their previous actions and words.
We went shopping that weekend and bought gifts for all the children. We purchased gloves, hats, socks, shoes and coats for them. Then, we picked out age appropriate toys. We bought three toys for each child. Next, we needed coats, hats, gloves, socks and shoes for the adults. We purchased everything they would need for a nice Christmas dinner and then picked out some things to help them get through the winter.
It was the day before Christmas Eve, and the day we would deliver the food and gifts. After having breakfast, we set off.

There are many parks in my city, of which Hongbo Park is my favourite.
Speaking of Hongbo Park, what attracts me are not only its green trees, fresh air and clean water but also a quiet environment.I have formed a habit of going there every weekend.Whenever I go there, I will forget about all my worries and troubles. While walking along the road, I can watch beautiful scenery, smell the fragrance of flowers and listen to birds singing.More importantly, I usually sit by the lake quietly, either reading a book or letting my mind wander.
I like Hongbo Park, which is a perfect place for me to relax myself and enjoy myself.

We arrived at the small home of this family in need, and we were welcomed inside with smiles and appreciation. They offered drinks and bread they had just baked. We accepted the treat and took out the things we brought for them. The parents let the children put the packages under their small Christmas tree. They were picking them up, shaking them, and guessing what was inside. Allison and Blake joined the children. Before long, they were laughing and playing together. I think their hearts were full of joy to be able to give happiness to this family.
It was time to go home, and we said our goodbyes. The children gave hugs and kisses, and I could tell our visit had touched Blake and Allison. The drive home was quiet. When we arrived home and went inside, Allison looked at me and said, “Thanks, Mom” and gave me a big hug. Then, Blake said,“Thanks, Mom, Lesson learned.” “What a meaningful Christmas!” I thought to myself. I knew my children had learned a lesson that would stay with them for a long time.

比如听到“menu” “food”和“order”等词就可判断出对话发生在餐馆;听到“size” “wear”和“colour”等词就可大致判断在服装店;听到“stamp” “post”和“mail”等词就可判断在邮局;听到“film” “movie”和“cinema”等词就可判断在电影院;听到“What’s wrong with you?” “Nothing serious.”和“Take one pill each time.”
Where does the conversation probably happen?
A.At home. B.In a hotel. C.In a library.
W:Excuse me, sir.One of my light bulbs is burnt out. It’s the one over the mirror in the bathroom.
M:OK, we’ll get it repaired soon. Can I have your room number?
根据“Excuse me” “sir” “light bulbs” “bathroom” “get it repaired” “Can I have your room number?”
Where did Michael go last year?
A.Russia. B.Norway. C.India.
W:Hi, Michael! I heard you just came back from a holiday?
M:Yes.I stayed for a week in China and 5 days in India.
W:You do travel a lot, don’t you? Last year, you went to Norway, right?
M:Well, I’ve been to quite some countries, but not yet to Norway.Last summer, I toured Russia for two weeks.
Last summer, I toured Russia for two weeks. Last year, you went to Norway, right?后面的回答中:but not yet to Norway将此答案否定。

THEME PARKS FUN AND MORE THAN FUN Which theme park would you like to visit? There are various kinds of theme parks, with different parks for almost everything: food, culture, science, cartoons, movies, history, and so on.Some parks are famous for having the biggest or longest roller coasters, [1]others for showing famous sights and sounds.[2]Whichever and whatever you like, there is an incredible theme park that will appeal to you! [1]本句是一个省略句,补充完整为others are famous for showing famous sights and sounds。 [3]The theme park you are probably most familiar with is Disneyland, which can be found in several parts of the world.Disneyland will bring you into a magical world and make your childhood dreams come true.Travelling through space, visiting a pirate ship, or meeting an adorable fairytale or cartoon character are all possible at Disneyland. As you wander around the fantasy amusement park, you may see Snow White or Mickey Mouse in a parade or even on the street.Of course, Disneyland also has many exciting rides to amuse you, from enormous swinging ships to scary free-fall drops. If you want to have fun and more than fun, come to Disneyland! you are probably most familiar with是省略了关系代词that或which的定语从句,修饰先行词The theme park;which引导非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词Disneyland。 THEME PARKS — FUN AND MORE THAN FUN为题,采取了“总——分”的叙述结构,先从概要介绍入手,再分段叙述三个有代表性的主题公园,即迪士尼乐园、多莉山公园和长隆海洋王国。

院;听到“What’s wrong with you?” “Nothing serious.”和“Take
one pill each time.”
A. At home. B. In a hotel. C. In a library.
W:Excuse me, sir.One of my light bulbs is burnt out. It’s the one over
the mirror in the bathroom.
M:OK, we’ll get it repaired soon. Can I have your room number?
“Excuse me” “sir” “light bulbs” “bathroom” “get it
repaired” “Can I have your room number?”
Where does the conversation probably happen?
A. Russia. B. Norway. C. India.
W:Hi, Michael! I heard you just came back from a holiday?
M:Yes.I stayed for a week in China and 5 days in India.
W:You do travel a lot, don’t you? Last year, you went to
Norway, right?
M:Well, I’ve been to quite some countries, but not yet to
Norway.Last summer, I toured Russia for two weeks.
Where did Michael go last year?
China, India, Russia
Last summer, I toured Russia for two weeks.所以
答案为A。 Last year, you went to
Norway, right?后面的回答中:but not yet to Norway将此答

Step 1
THEME PARKS
FUN AND MORE THAN FUN
Which theme park would you like to visit? There are various kinds of
theme parks, with different parks for almost everything: food,
culture, science, cartoons, movies, history, and so on.Some parks
are famous for having the biggest or longest roller coasters, [1]others for
showing famous sights and sounds.[2]Whichever and whatever you like,
there is an incredible theme park that will appeal to you!
[1]本句是一个省略句,补充完整为others are famous for showing
famous sights and sounds。
[2]本句是一个复合句。whichever and whatever引导让步状语从句;
[3]The theme park you are probably most familiar with is
Disneyland, which can be found in several parts of the world.Disneyland
will bring you into a magical world and make your childhood dreams come
true.Travelling through space, visiting a pirate ship, or meeting an
adorable fairytale or cartoon character are all possible at Disneyland. As
you wander around the fantasy amusement park, you may see Snow
White or Mickey Mouse in a parade or even on the street.Of course,
Disneyland also has many exciting rides to amuse you, from enormous
swinging ships to scary free-fall drops. If you want to have fun and more
than fun, come to Disneyland!
you are probably most familiar with是省略
了关系代词that或which的定语从句,修饰先行词The theme park;
Dollywood, in the beautiful Smoky Mountains in the southeastern
USA, is unique because it shows and celebrates America’s traditional
southeastern culture.Famous country music groups put on performances
there all year round, indoors and outdoors.People come from all over
America to see skilled workers make wood, glass,
and iron objects in the old-fashioned way.Visiting the candy shop and
trying some of the same kind of candy that American southerners made 150
years ago is a rare experience.Riding on the only steam engine still
working in the southeastern United States is a special treat. And for those
who like rides, Dollywood has a superb old wooden roller coaster,
Thunderhead. It is world-famous for having the longest track in the smallest
e to Dollywood to have fun learning all about America’s
historical southeastern culture!
Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Zhuhai, China, is one of the leading
ocean-themed parks in the world. Here you can walk under the Whale
Shark Aquarium — the world’s largest — and see up to 20,000 fish, in
addition to whale sharks.Watching the dolphin and sea lion shows is both
educational and fun.Of course, you can also see all kinds of interesting
animals, including polar bears. The park has more rides than you can
imagine:join a water fight against pirates, get turned upside down by an
exciting roller coaster, or get wet in one of the water rides!
Then at night, see the splendid Journey of Lights Parade and fireworks
display.Hungry? The park has plenty of restaurants with tasty food for
every appetite — you can even eat while watching the fish swim by.[4]If it
is ocean entertainment that you are looking for, come to Chimelong
Ocean Kingdom!
If引导条件状语从句,it is ocean
entertainment that you are looking for 为强调句,强调宾语ocean
entertainment; come to ...Kingdom为祈使句。
Step 2
THEME PARKS — FUN AND MORE THAN FUN为题,采取了
“总——分”的叙述结构,先从概要介绍入手,再分段叙述三个有代
表性的主题公园,即迪士尼乐园、多莉山公园和长隆海洋王国。
第一段首句使用了特殊疑问句,引起读者兴趣;中间部分使用了
some ..., others ...
使用了old-fashioned、 rare、 superb old

A 5-year-old child from Seattle
is showing that there isn’t an age requirement for helping others.
Edison Juel was on a family trip on Hawaii’s Big Island when the
devastating wildfires occurred in the island of Maui, which have killed
115 people and nearly destroyed the town of Lahaina.Edison, whose
nickname is Eddie, overheard his parents watching news reports of the
tragedy.
“It was Wednesday afternoon, we had the news on, and he asked
me to turn the TV off because he said that made him too sad,” Eddie’s
mother, Ami Juel told USA TODAY. “At that point, I realised he was
really paying attention and listening, that we needed to actually address
it.I hadn’t really intended to tell him about it necessarily.”
Ami explained to Eddie where the fires were and that he was safe but
that many people were hurt. While it was difficult for Eddie to comprehend
the devastation at a young age, it was easy for him to want to help people
in any way he could.
Eddie shared the idea of starting a stand, similar to one he had seen
on a previous trip to Colorado, and donating all the money to support
victims of the wildfires.Ami said she and her husband immediately
supported the idea and set up a lemonade stand on Saturday on their busy
Seattle street.
The stand ran from 10 a.m.to 6 p.m.It sold pink and yellow
lemonade, sparkling water, popsicles, ice cream sandwiches, candy
and even some of Eddie’s toys. The family posted videos on social media
and told their friends and family.Lemonade sold for a dollar each, but
most people gave $5, $10 and $20 bills as part of their donation.
To Ami and her husband’s surprise, their one-day business found
success quickly. The lemonade stand made over $17,000 as of Friday.Ami
and her husband are proud of Eddie’s creativity and generosity and happy
to support his positive ideas.

Scientists have reported that
Antarctica’s sea ice is at a record low level. That’s worrying because the sea
ice is an important part of the Earth’s cooling system. It’s not yet clear if the
low sea ice level is temporary, or part of a changing climate pattern.
Every year, the sea ice at the South Pole goes through a cycle of
melting and freezing. In the summer, the huge masses of sea ice melt to
their smallest point.Over the colder winter months, the sea ice grows and
grows until it covers an incredibly wide area.Usually, the sea ice covers
the greatest area (its “maximum extent”) around 23 September, as
winter ends at the South Pole.
Scientists have been measuring the area of the sea ice in Antarctica
since 1979.For most of this time, Antarctica has seemed to be almost
unaffected by the changing weather conditions experienced in other parts
of the globe. In fact, until recent years, Antarctica’s sea ice area mainly
set records for growing.
That began to change around 2016.Now, for several years, the
area of Antarctica’s sea ice has been shrinking (减少).Antarctic sea ice
has been in sharp decline in recent years and its winter maximum reached a
record low this year.
Scientists are still trying to understand what is driving the change in
Antarctica. One likely cause for the change is the rising temperatures of the
world’s oceans.Ted Scambos, a research scientist at the University of
Colorado, says Antarctica’s ice levels have always changed some, but
the sharp loss this year is “pointing towards warmer ocean conditions
around the continent”.
The new low record has scientists worried. The sea ice is important,
because it helps cool the planet. When it’s frozen, sea ice reflects sunlight
back out into space. But when the sea ice melts, the water left behind is
darker, and absorbs more heat. The concern is that the melting sea ice
could start a cycle that might cause even more ice to melt.

“Is this all I got?” asked my daughter, Allison. “I asked for a
new cell phone and a laptop!”
“Where are the rest of the presents?” asked my son, Blake. “ I
wanted a set of golf clubs and a skateboard!”
Money had been tight, and as a single parent, I was doing the best
I could. My children received almost everything on their wish lists when
their father was alive, but things were different now. Blake was now
thirteen years old and Allison twelve. I knew we had somewhat spoiled
(宠坏) them. My feelings were hurt, but I didn’t want to show it. I
was also very disappointed in their reactions to their presents.
The months went by quickly. I was planning our next Christmas
celebration in my head a little every day, for I was determined to teach
them a lesson.
I contacted agencies to find a family that desperately needed help.
They were a low-income family, and my children needed to know they
existed and what they had to go through.
That Christmas we did all the usual traditions, such as putting up a
tree. But as Christmas Eve drew closer, there were still no presents under
the tree.
I said that we would be giving gifts to a family that truly needed them.
They needed to see what it was like to need essentials such as clothing and
food. I went on to explain my disappointment in their previous actions and
words.
We went shopping that weekend and bought gifts for all the children.
We purchased gloves, hats, socks, shoes and coats for them. Then,
we picked out age appropriate toys. We bought three toys for each child.
Next, we needed coats, hats, gloves, socks and shoes for the adults.
We purchased everything they would need for a nice Christmas dinner and
then picked out some things to help them get through the winter.
It was the day before Christmas Eve, and the day we would deliver
the food and gifts. After having breakfast, we set off.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
We arrived at the small home of this family in need, and we were

We arrived at the small home of this family in need, and we were
welcomed inside with smiles and appreciation. They offered drinks and
bread they had just baked. We accepted the treat and took out the things we
brought for them. The parents let the children put the packages under their
small Christmas tree. They were picking them up, shaking them, and
guessing what was inside. Allison and Blake joined the children. Before
long, they were laughing and playing together. I think their hearts were
full of joy to be able to give happiness to this family.
It was time to go home, and we said our goodbyes. The children
gave hugs and kisses, and I could tell our visit had touched Blake and
Allison. The drive home was quiet. When we arrived home and went
inside, Allison looked at me and said, “Thanks, Mom” and gave
me a big hug. Then, Blake said,“Thanks, Mom, Lesson learned.”
“What a meaningful Christmas!” I thought to myself. I knew my
children had learned a lesson that would stay with them for a long time.
