Would you exchange $10,000 for a jar of applesauce (苹果酱)? Unless the Golden Delicious apples it was made from actually contained chunks of real gold, probably not.
But that’s just the reward one Washington state man received for returning $10,000 he found in the road to its rightful owner.
Michael King had just taken out the money from the bank to cover a business debt he owed. For whatever reason, he was so distracted; he accidentally left his wallet on his vehicle before starting the engine and heading home.
“I just took the withdrawal that day, and I don’t know what drove me to leave it on the bumper (保险杠) of the truck,” King told The Seattle Times.“... I am just surprised that it didn’t get picked up by somebody else.It would have destroyed us to have that amount of money disappear.”
Meanwhile, Steve Harrison, who was heading in the opposite direction noticed something floating in the breeze.Quickly realising it was cash, he pulled over and snatched it up.He found King’s wallet as well.
Harrison counted the money — one hundred $100 bills. His next order of business: tracking down King and returning his bankroll and wallet.
“I never took seriously the thought of keeping it,” Harrison told The Seattle Times.“It’s just simpler to do the right thing.Once I realised that there was an ID involved, I knew I would return the money.”
When the two arranged to meet, King wasn’t able to give Harrison a financial reward.Instead, he swapped (交换) the found funds for a jar of home-made applesauce — which he told Harrison was made with love and care by his family.
While that might sound like a mighty price jar of applesauce to some, to us, it’s a form of currency that would leave a good taste in anyone’s mouth. And King isn’t stopping there with his gratitude.Harrison has been promised home-smoked salmon, home-made blackberry jam, and many more tasty treats in his future.
24.What do we learn about Michael King?
A.He was very careless. B.He was very wealthy.
C.He ran a successful business. D.He had met Harrison before.

For most people, getting to the stars is nothing more than a dream. On 28 April 2001, Dennis Tito achieved that lifelong goal — but he wasn’t a typical astronaut. Tito, a wealthy businessman, paid $20 million for a seat on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to be the first tourist to visit the International Space Station. Only seven people have followed suit in the 20 years since, but that number is about to double in the next 12 months alone.
NASA has long been hesitant to play host to space tourists, so Russia has been the only option available for those looking for this kind of extreme adventure. However, it seems the rise of private space companies is going to make it easier for regular people to experience space.
Personally, I see the beginning of an era in which more people can experience space. With companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin hoping to build a future for humanity in space, space tourism is a way to demonstrate both the safety and reliability of space travel to the general public.
Flights to space like Dennis Tito’s are expensive for a reason. A rocket must burn a lot of costly fuel to travel high and fast enough to enter Earth’s orbit.
Another cheaper possibility is a suborbital (亚轨道) launch, with the rocket going high enough to reach the edge of space and coming right back down. While passengers on a suborbital trip experience weightlessness and incredible views, these launches are more accessible.
To our joy, three companies led by billionaire CEOs have emerged as the major players: Virgin Galactic, Blue Origin, and SpaceX.
Now, SpaceX has two tourist launches planned. These trips will be costly, at $55 million for the flight. Blue Origin’s and Virgin Galactic’s suborbital trips are far more reasonable in cost, with both priced between $200,000 and $250,000. Though these prices are high, it is worth considering that Dennis Tito’s $20 million ticket in 2001 could pay for 100 flights on Blue Origin soon. The experience of viewing the Earth from space, though, may prove to be priceless for a whole new generation of space explorers.
28.What makes space travel easier for common people?
A.Russia’s exploration in space. B.NASA’s accepting space tourists.
C.The first space tour made by Dennis Tito. D.The appearance of private space companies.
29.What’s the author’s attitude to space tourism?
A.Positive. B.Curious.
C.Worried. D.Doubtful.
30.What do we learn about a suborbital launch?
A.It will increase the cost. B.It will lower the standards.
C.It will offer a better experience. D.It will make people travel farther.
31.What does the author think of Blue Origin’s and Virgin Galactic’s suborbital trips?
A.They are unreasonably expensive. B.They are relatively cheaper indeed.
C.They are not worth the money. D.They are affordable to the public.
D
As we approach the holiday season, the pressure of gift-buying is a source of stress for many people.
Taking a look at the psychology of financial choices can help successful gift-giving. In addition to the economic loss of money, any purchase of goods or services comes with costs other than coin. People experience emotional pain — often in the form of guilt — when spending money crazily. This is called the moral tax or pain of payment.
Moral tax serves an evolutionary purpose. It balances the joy we gain from newly purchased items to avoid overspending. We can think of it as an emotional tool for self-regulation that helps us stay within our budget. Brain scans using fMRI technology show activation (激活) of brain areas associated with physical pain, when people look at prices of items they intend to purchase.
The strength of pain experienced depends on the specific circumstances of a payment. Specifically, it matters how closely purchase and payment are linked or coupled. One factor that affects coupling is the payment method. Economic experiments have shown that people are much more willing to make a payment if using a credit card as opposed to cash. This is because the moral tax decreases during credit card payments as the link between payment and purchase is less salient (显著的). Paying with a credit card avoids an immediate financial loss at the time of payment, thereby reducing negative feelings of guilt.
Moral tax is the feeling of guilt we experience when spending money. We can reduce this guilt by de-coupling the enjoyment of a purchase from its payment. However, the best way to reduce moral tax is by receiving a gift — an item you didn’t have to pay for at all!
As a result, the best gifts are items that normally bring particularly high levels of moral tax. This may include luxury goods that appear overpriced and therefore cause particularly bad feelings of guilt upon purchase. You usually think it a real treat, an unnecessary purchase, or “too good” for buying the item yourself.
32.What does the author stress about the moral tax in Paragraph 3?
A.What it means. B.How it happens.
C.Its positive effect. D.Its potential harm.
33.What happens when we use a credit card?
A.We experience less bad feelings. B.We have more pain of payment.
C.We lose the pleasure of shopping. D.We get more enjoyment of a purchase.
34.What does the underlined word “de-coupling” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Managing. B.Removing.
C.Separating. D.Preventing.
35.What do we know about the best gifts according to the author?
A.They bring no feeling of guilt. B.They bring much pain of payment.
C.They are usually cheap but excellent. D.They make you feel good upon purchase.

There are three basic kinds for memory: short-term memory, working memory, and long-term memory.Short-term memory is the sort of memory you use when someone tells you their phone number and you remember it just long enough to write it down.Working memory is a more active version of short-term memory and the brain is able to retain it a little longer. 36 .
To get something into your short-term memory, you need both Input and Output. Here’s a formula: Input + Output = Short-term Memory.
37 .It is something outside of your head being put into your head.Output is even more exciting because you have so many creative choices and it’s up to you to decide how to apply what you’ve learned.
38 .By thinking about new information and then doing something active with it, you are essentially telling your brain that this new information is worth remembering. That “doing something” could be a lot of creative possibilities.
But how should you improve your long-term memory? 39 .Here’s the formula: Input + Output + Review = Long-term Memory.
Imagine a grassy lawn that is between someone’s driveway and front door.Rather than walk the long way down the path, most people just cut through the grass to get to their car, right? The more times someone cuts through the grass, the flatter the grass becomes on that new pathway until, eventually, there is a permanent dirt path. 40 .Every time you review something, neurons (神经元) form a “pathway” in your brain and make it more permanent.Maybe we should really be saying “practice makes memory”.
A.All you need to do is review
B.A good memory is very important
C.That is pretty much how the brain works
D.It’s quite different from long-term memory
E.We make a memory only when we use information
F.Input is quite simply putting something into your brain
G.However, long-term memory stores information for a few days up to decades

At the start of the school year, I had to tell everyone about my summer. My voice slid down my throat and wouldn’t come back up no matter how many times I coughed.
That speech only took 30 seconds. But this time, I had three weeks to research and write my speech. When I asked for advice at dinner on the last Friday, Dad said,“Well now, Kyna, a speech is like this table. The top is your topic.Your main points are the legs.If you don’t have enough, it’ll just fall over.”
He was no help to me.All I was doing to write this speech was staring at the computer screen. When Mom came to my bedroom that night, she asked, “When is this speech due?”
“Monday.I hate speaking in front of people,” I said.
“There’s nothing to fear here,” she said.“Know what I did when I had to give my first speech? I drew pictures.I showed them what I could do well and talked about it.I got a round of applause (掌声).”
Mom drew so well that you believed it could be real.I have a picture on my wall to prove it — a street leading out of my room up to a castle on a hill that has me traveling there in my dreams almost every night. That night when I went in through the keep of the castle and entered the kitchen, I was blinded by a flash of bright light — Penelope, the princess I imagined living there held up an old-fashioned camera.
When I woke up in the morning, I had a plan for how to prepare for my speech. That Sunday, I practiced the speech until my voice went hoarse (嘶哑的).
On Monday, Mom and Dad drove me to school, and I wore my favourite sunglasses, made out of the lenses (镜片) of two old cameras.
Behind a camera is where I felt the most comfortable, especially with Mom and Dad right there with me, sitting in the back of the classroom with a few grandparents who came to hear the speeches.
When I stood up in front, the whole class looked at me.

Dad clapped his hands together loud and clear.

(Text 10)
Most Americans treat their pets like family members. It means Americans love their pets. And they provide them with a proper home, food, exercise, and medical care.Americans love pets and it is not just puppy love. Sometimes, they add to their interest to their pets with entertaining videos and amusing toys.If they have an eye for fashion, pets’ owners can dress their pets in pretty clothes. For special occasions, they can use perfume to make their dogs smell nice or less beastly. You might see Americans treat their pets like they treat their children, sometimes even better. The most common pets in the US are dogs, cats, birds and fish. Pets, such as dogs and cats, make good companions. But in addition to providing good companionship, pets are useful too. For example, dogs guard property, herd cattle and sheep, and lead the blind.Monkeys, unusual pets in the US, will soon become useful pets for disabled persons.Scientists are now training monkeys to help disabled persons do some simple tasks, such as eating, cleaning the house and even changing the channel on the TV set.

How to get your New York Pass部分可知,游客有三种方式获得该通票:手机下载、全球快递或到纽约再领。
How to get fast track entry部分可知,该通票最大的好处是节约时间,因为游客不必去排队购票。
38.E 下文提到的thinking about new information和doing something active with it都是对信息的利用,故E项符合语境。
39.A 上句提出问题:how should you improve your long-term memory?,A项正是对这一问题的回答:获得长期记忆的关键是复习和回顾。
41.B 根据下文about our products when the power went out可知,作者正在做关于他们产品的演示。

第一节
Dear Chris,
I’m so glad to hear that you are coming to China. Please allow me to recommend a famous tourist attraction to you — Emei Mountain.
Located in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, Emei Mountain is one of the four holy mountains of Chinese Buddhism. The mountain is well known for its splendid cliffs and beautiful scenery. More importantly, it is also of great spiritual and cultural significance, in which there are many archaeological sites, important architecture, and cultural relics. It was added to the World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in 1996 and has been a favourite destination for tourists from all over the world.
I guarantee you will be satisfied with your trip in Emei Mountain and have a wonderful time there.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
When I stood up in front, the whole class looked at me.Everyone’s eyes were fixed upon me.They seemed to be expecting a different me.My voice was still shaky, but I managed to overcome my fear little by little.Inspired by my dad and mom, I knew what to say now.I told them one of my night dreams and how I learned taking pictures from Penelope, the goddess living in the castle drawn by my mom.Actually, Penelope had never told me how to, but it worked. When I stopped talking, the class was in total silence.
Dad clapped his hands together loud and clear. Then shouted my mom.And then followed claps and shouts from everyone else. Some kids even started to ask me questions! They were curious about the cool glasses made out of old cameras and they wondered what effect it would be if I took a picture of them. With a flash of bright light, the camera included them all, including my smiling mom and dad sitting in the back.I knew it was a good shot and of course a wonderful speech.

(Text 10)
Most Americans treat their pets like family members. It means
Americans love their pets. And they provide them with a proper home,
food, exercise, and medical care.Americans love pets and it is not just
puppy love. Sometimes, they add to their interest to their pets with
entertaining videos and amusing toys.If they have an eye for fashion,
pets’ owners can dress their pets in pretty clothes. For special
occasions, they can use perfume to make their dogs smell nice or less
beastly. You might see Americans treat their pets like they treat their
children, sometimes even better.
The most common pets in the US are dogs, cats, birds and fish. Pets,
such as dogs and cats, make good companions. But in addition to
providing good companionship, pets are useful too. For example, dogs
guard property, herd cattle and sheep, and lead the blind.Monkeys,
unusual pets in the US, will soon become useful pets for disabled
persons.Scientists are now training monkeys to help disabled persons do
some simple tasks, such as eating, cleaning the house and even
changing the channel on the TV set.

Would you exchange $10,000 for a jar of applesauce (苹果酱)?
Unless the Golden Delicious apples it was made from actually contained
chunks of real gold, probably not.
But that’s just the reward one Washington state man received for
returning $10,000 he found in the road to its rightful owner.
Michael King had just taken out the money from the bank to cover a
business debt he owed. For whatever reason, he was so distracted; he
accidentally left his wallet on his vehicle before starting the engine and
heading home.
“I just took the withdrawal that day, and I don’t know what drove
me to leave it on the bumper (保险杠) of the truck,” King told The
Seattle Times.“... I am just surprised that it didn’t get picked up by
somebody else.It would have destroyed us to have that amount of money
disappear.”
Meanwhile, Steve Harrison, who was heading in the opposite
direction noticed something floating in the breeze.Quickly realising it was
cash, he pulled over and snatched it up.He found King’s wallet as
well.
Harrison counted the money — one hundred $100 bills. His next order
of business: tracking down King and returning his bankroll and wallet.
“I never took seriously the thought of keeping it,” Harrison told
The Seattle Times.“It’s just simpler to do the right thing.Once I realised
that there was an ID involved, I knew I would return the money.”
When the two arranged to meet, King wasn’t able to give Harrison
a financial reward.Instead, he swapped (交换) the found funds for a
jar of home-made applesauce — which he told Harrison was made with
love and care by his family.
While that might sound like a mighty price jar of applesauce to
some, to us, it’s a form of currency that would leave a good taste in
anyone’s mouth. And King isn’t stopping there with his
gratitude.Harrison has been promised home-smoked salmon, home-made
blackberry jam, and many more tasty treats in his future.

For most people, getting to the stars is nothing more than a dream.
On 28 April 2001, Dennis Tito achieved that lifelong goal — but he
wasn’t a typical astronaut. Tito, a wealthy businessman, paid $20
million for a seat on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to be the first tourist to
visit the International Space Station. Only seven people have followed suit
in the 20 years since, but that number is about to double in the next 12
months alone.
NASA has long been hesitant to play host to space tourists, so
Russia has been the only option available for those looking for this kind of
extreme adventure. However, it seems the rise of private space
companies is going to make it easier for regular people to experience
space.
Personally, I see the beginning of an era in which more people can
experience space. With companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin hoping to
build a future for humanity in space, space tourism is a way to
demonstrate both the safety and reliability of space travel to the general
public.
Flights to space like Dennis Tito’s are expensive for a reason. A
rocket must burn a lot of costly fuel to travel high and fast enough to enter
Earth’s orbit.
Another cheaper possibility is a suborbital (亚轨道) launch, with
the rocket going high enough to reach the edge of space and coming right
back down. While passengers on a suborbital trip experience
weightlessness and incredible views, these launches are more accessible.
To our joy, three companies led by billionaire CEOs have emerged
as the major players: Virgin Galactic, Blue Origin, and SpaceX.
Now, SpaceX has two tourist launches planned. These trips will be
costly, at $55 million for the flight. Blue Origin’s and Virgin
Galactic’s suborbital trips are far more reasonable in cost, with both
priced between $200,000 and $250,000. Though these prices are
high, it is worth considering that Dennis Tito’s $20 million ticket in
2001 could pay for 100 flights on Blue Origin soon. The experience of
viewing the Earth from space, though, may prove to be priceless for a
whole new generation of space explorers.

As we approach the holiday season, the pressure of gift-buying is a
source of stress for many people.
Taking a look at the psychology of financial choices can help
successful gift-giving. In addition to the economic loss of money, any
purchase of goods or services comes with costs other than coin. People
experience emotional pain — often in the form of guilt — when spending
money crazily. This is called the moral tax or pain of payment.
Moral tax serves an evolutionary purpose. It balances the joy we gain
from newly purchased items to avoid overspending. We can think of it as
an emotional tool for self-regulation that helps us stay within our budget.
Brain scans using fMRI technology show activation (激活) of brain
areas associated with physical pain, when people look at prices of items
they intend to purchase.
The strength of pain experienced depends on the specific
circumstances of a payment. Specifically, it matters how closely
purchase and payment are linked or coupled. One factor that affects
coupling is the payment method. Economic experiments have shown that
people are much more willing to make a payment if using a credit card as
opposed to cash. This is because the moral tax decreases during credit card
payments as the link between payment and purchase is less salient (显著
的). Paying with a credit card avoids an immediate financial loss at the
time of payment, thereby reducing negative feelings of guilt.
Moral tax is the feeling of guilt we experience when spending money.
We can reduce this guilt by de-coupling the enjoyment of a purchase from
its payment. However, the best way to reduce moral tax is by receiving a
gift — an item you didn’t have to pay for at all!
As a result, the best gifts are items that normally bring particularly
high levels of moral tax. This may include luxury goods that appear
overpriced and therefore cause particularly bad feelings of guilt upon
purchase. You usually think it a real treat, an unnecessary purchase, or
“too good” for buying the item yourself.

32. What does the author stress about the moral tax in Paragraph 3?
A. What it means. B. How it happens.
C. Its positive effect. D. Its potential harm.
33. What happens when we use a credit card?
A. We experience less bad feelings.
B. We have more pain of payment.
C. We lose the pleasure of shopping.
D. We get more enjoyment of a purchase.
34. What does the underlined word “de-coupling” in Paragraph 5
mean?
A. Managing. B. Removing.
C. Separating. D. Preventing.
35. What do we know about the best gifts according to the author?
A. They bring no feeling of guilt.
B. They bring much pain of payment.
C. They are usually cheap but excellent.
D. They make you feel good upon purchase.
There are three basic kinds for memory: short-term memory,
working memory, and long-term memory.Short-term memory is the
sort of memory you use when someone tells you their phone number
and you remember it just long enough to write it down.Working
memory is a more active version of short-term memory and the brain is
able to retain it a little longer. 36 .
To get something into your short-term memory, you need both
Input and Output.Here’s a formula: Input + Output = Short-term
Memory.
37 .It is something outside of your head being put into your
head.Output is even more exciting because you have so many creative
choices and it’s up to you to decide how to apply what you’ve
learned.
38 .By thinking about new information and then doing
something active with it, you are essentially telling your brain that
this new information is worth remembering. That “doing
something” could be a lot of creative possibilities.
But how should you improve your long-term
memory? 39 .Here’s the formula: Input + Output + Review
= Long-term Memory.
Imagine a grassy lawn that is between someone’s driveway and
front door.Rather than walk the long way down the path, most
people just cut through the grass to get to their car, right? The more
times someone cuts through the grass, the flatter the grass becomes
on that new pathway until, eventually, there is a permanent dirt
path. 40 .Every time you review something, neurons (神经
元) form a “pathway” in your brain and make it more
permanent.Maybe we should really be saying “practice makes
memory”.
A. All you need to do is review
B. A good memory is very important
C. That is pretty much how the brain works
D. It’s quite different from long-term memory
E. We make a memory only when we use information
F. Input is quite simply putting something into your brain
G. However, long-term memory stores information for a few days
up to decades

At the start of the school year, I had to tell everyone about my
summer. My voice slid down my throat and wouldn’t come back up no
matter how many times I coughed.
That speech only took 30 seconds. But this time, I had three weeks
to research and write my speech. When I asked for advice at dinner on the
last Friday, Dad said,“Well now, Kyna, a speech is like this
table. The top is your topic.Your main points are the legs.If you don’t
have enough, it’ll just fall over.”
He was no help to me.All I was doing to write this speech was staring
at the computer screen. When Mom came to my bedroom that night, she
asked, “When is this speech due?”
“Monday.I hate speaking in front of people,” I said.
“There’s nothing to fear here,” she said.“Know what I did
when I had to give my first speech? I drew pictures.I showed them what I
could do well and talked about it.I got a round of applause (掌声).”
Mom drew so well that you believed it could be real.I have a picture
on my wall to prove it — a street leading out of my room up to a castle on a
hill that has me traveling there in my dreams almost every night. That night
when I went in through the keep of the castle and entered the kitchen, I
was blinded by a flash of bright light — Penelope, the princess I
imagined living there held up an old-fashioned camera.
When I woke up in the morning, I had a plan for how to prepare for
my speech. That Sunday, I practiced the speech until my voice went
hoarse (嘶哑的).
On Monday, Mom and Dad drove me to school, and I wore my
favourite sunglasses, made out of the lenses (镜片) of two old
cameras.
Behind a camera is where I felt the most comfortable, especially
with Mom and Dad right there with me, sitting in the back of the
classroom with a few grandparents who came to hear the speeches.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
When I stood up in front, the whole class looked at me.

Dad clapped his hands together loud and clear.

When I stood up in front, the whole class looked at me.Everyone’s
eyes were fixed upon me.They seemed to be expecting a different me.My
voice was still shaky, but I managed to overcome my fear little by
little.Inspired by my dad and mom, I knew what to say now.I told them
one of my night dreams and how I learned taking pictures from Penelope,
the goddess living in the castle drawn by my mom.Actually, Penelope
had never told me how to, but it worked. When I stopped talking, the
class was in total silence.
Dad clapped his hands together loud and clear. Then shouted my
mom.And then followed claps and shouts from everyone else. Some kids
even started to ask me questions! They were curious about the cool
glasses made out of old cameras and they wondered what effect it would be
if I took a picture of them. With a flash of bright light, the camera
included them all, including my smiling mom and dad sitting in the
back.I knew it was a good shot and of course a wonderful speech.
