Holly Cooke wasn’t a fan of weekends.Whenever Friday rolled around, it was a reminder that she had no one to spend her spare time with.
“I was super isolated,” said Cooke, who relocated from Stoke-on-Trent — a city in central England — to London when she was 22.“I moved here knowing absolutely no one.” She had high hopes of going to restaurants, bars and the theater as she had done before, but she didn’t want to do those activities alone.“I was desiring community; people who wanted to hang out and have fun,” said Cooke, now 26.
She grew so desperate for company, she said, she eventually found herself Googling: “How to make friends in London.” The search proved mostly futile, though she found a few other women who were also lonely in London on some social media apps.
Cooke decided to create a Facebook group called “The London Lonely Girls Club”, and invited the people she connected with on the apps to join. She then asked everyone to meet for brunch (早午餐).“It was so difficult,” she said, adding that she asked a friend from out of town to come in for the brunch, in case no one else showed up.“Saying that you’re lonely and you don’t have people around, admitting to that was really scary.”
Cooke was pleasantly surprised when five women showed up and they all got along well. This proved to Cooke that she was not alone in her loneliness, and that she could help others in the same situation. She decided to start planning meetups every few weeks, and word slowly spread about the Facebook group. Now, five years later, the London Lonely Girls Club has more than 35,000 members.
The London Lonely Girls Club organizes various types of gatherings, including park picnics, art lessons, dinners and yoga. For some events, attendees are charged a small fee of about $3 to cover deposits and other charges associated with securing a venue.
Cooke said she lost count of how many women have made lasting friendships through her group.“It’s beautiful and it’s rewarding, and it’s the reason I’ve carried on,” she said.“As long as there is a need, we will be here.”
24.What can we learn about Holly Cooke?

A.She wanted to have an alternative plan in case the brunch didn’t go well.

C.She needed someone to help organize the meetup.
D.She was afraid that no one else would come.
27.What do we know about the London Lonely Girls Club?

When colds and flu hit, many people automatically turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to push through and treat their symptoms (症状).Although these medicines are easily accessible and widely used, it might come as a surprise to many people to learn that they are not risk-free.A study estimated that every year, 26,735 people went to the emergency room for adverse (有害的) events related to OTC cold and cough medicines.
When two or more drugs are used together, their interactions can sometimes produce unexpected harmful effects.Physicians are typically knowledgeable about potential drug interactions, so it is very important for patients to ask their health care providers which OTC medicines are safe for them to use.
It is important to read the package ingredients of OTC medicines closely to avoid duplication of doses (剂量重复).Cold medicines are typically made up of multiple ingredients, including pain relievers, nasal decongestants and cough suppressants or expectorants.A person who takes a single-ingredient medicine paired with one of these multi-ingredient medicines can receive an unsafe dose of that ingredient.
While everyone could potentially experience adverse effects from cold and flu medicines, some groups — including older adults, children and pregnant women — may be at greater risk.
Older people who are using prescribed (处方的) drugs to treat multiple health conditions may have a higher risk of drug interactions because of the higher number of medicines being used at the same time to treat different conditions. The aging body is not as expert at absorbing, distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are. This can put older adults at higher risk for an overdose and drug-to-drug interactions with some medicines.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not recommend giving cold medicines to children under age 4.Because of a variety of factors, young children have a higher risk of an accidental overdose and adverse events that could lead to death.
28.What does the author suggest patients do in Paragraph 2?
A.Ask for advice from doctors. B.Buy medicines from hospitals.
C.Take drugs as early as possible. D.Read the package ingredients of drugs.
29.Why does the author mention cold medicines in Paragraph 3?
A.To stress the importance of learning about medicines’ ingredients.
B.To explain OTC medicines often have more than one ingredient.
C.To show cold medicines are more likely to cause bad effects.
D.To provide a medical choice for people who catch a cold.
30.What can we learn about older people in Paragraph 5?
A.Their desire for health makes them take more medicines.
B.Their body cannot deal with medicines easily.
C.They are more easily affected by diseases.
D.They cannot face aging positively.
31.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Should Medicines Be Available “Over the Counter”?
B.How to Deal With an OTC Drug Overdose
C.Tips for Taking Over-the-Counter Drugs
D.OTC Medicines May Not Be Safe
D
Hearing loss may increase the risk of dementia (痴呆), but using hearing aids lowered the risk so it’s similar to those without hearing loss, according to a new study.Researchers followed more than 437,000 people from the UK Biobank, a large biomedical database and research resource that follows local residents in the long term. They looked at each person’s risk of dementia, self-reported use of hearing aids and medical records to see if the person developed dementia.
“Our study provides the best evidence to date to suggest that hearing aids could be a minimally invasive, cost-effective treatment to reduce the potential impact of hearing loss on dementia,” corresponding author Dongshan Zhu, professor at Shandong University in China, said in a statement.“Our findings also point out the urgent need for the early introduction of hearing aids when someone starts to experience hearing damage.” The research accounted for other factors, including loneliness, social isolation and depression, but found that untreated hearing loss still had a strong association with dementia.
Tom Dening, a professor of dementia research, who wasn’t involved in the research, recently began wearing hearing aids.He hopes that these findings will help him care for patients better.“We need to use studies like this to encourage the public not to be ashamed of hearing problems,” he said, “and to seek treatment sooner rather than later.”
Many adults need hearing aids, but not enough use them.Dr Karina De Sousa, the lead author of a new study looking at over-the-counter (无需医师处方即可出售的) hearing aids, said, “There are many potential reasons people opt not to get hearing aids, but one has been the accessibility of the devices.” And this is the issue her study wants to tackle.
This small, preliminary (初步的) study found that a self-fitting, over-the-counter hearing aid could be as good an option for some people as those fitted by a hearing specialist.“One thing to remember is that over-the-counter hearing aids are not a one-size-fits-all option,” De Sousa added.“If you don’t meet the specified criteria (标准) for wearing an over-the-counter hearing aid, I would recommend seeking the help of a hearing professional.”
32.What are the new research’s findings based on?
A.A survey conducted by the UK Biobank.
B.The data collected from a large UK-based population.
C.An observation of dementia patients living in the UK.
D.The similarities between people with and without hearing loss.
33.What did Dongshan Zhu suggest about hearing aids?
A.They should be used in a careful way.
B.They are the best treatment option for hearing damage.
C.Their early use is recommended for hard-of-hearing people.
D.Their effectiveness in reducing dementia risks remains unclear.
34.What is Tom Dening’s attitude towards this new study?
A.Doubtful. B.Uncaring.
C.Critical. D.Appreciative.
35.What is the purpose of Dr Karina De Sousa’s study?
A.To design a smarter hearing aid.
B.To help make hearing aids more accessible.
C.To find a one-size-fits-all solution for hearing loss.
D.To prove hearing loss may increase dementia risks.

Recently, a new girl, Rida, had joined her class. She was also interested in art but she was not as good at drawing as Anabia was.Miss Saima, the art teacher, helped Rida and taught her tips and tricks to improve her drawing skill. And now Rida was also considered among the best artists in grade six.

W:Oh, no, you know these things are bad for your health. How about ordering some vegetables and fruits instead?
(Text 2)
W:I hate to say it, but Jacky isn’t doing well in the new film.
M:Well, I think he’s only playing a different type of role. My sister thinks he is still the best.
(Text 3)
M:I met Sam on the street today.
W:Really? Did he say something about his sister?
M:Yes. Betty ought to be leaving New York very soon, because her husband, John, has taken a job in Los Angeles.
(Text 4)
M:A power cut. Oh, I have to hand in this report tomorrow.
W:Just take out your cell phone to get the candle in the drawer.
M:OK.
(Text 5)
W:Did you see what that young man did?
M:No. I was looking at the other way.
W:He made a U-turn in the middle of the block and almost hit a boy on a bicycle.
M:Drivers get crazier these days.
(Text 6)
W:What are you looking at, Jim?
M:I’m reading an article about the world’s homeless population.
W:Homeless population?
M:Yes, sociologists define homeless people as those who have no fixed shelter on any given night. These figures show five countries with large homeless population.
W:Wow, that’s amazing. I never realized that there were so many homeless people in Germany and France.
M:You know what? Our own country the USA ranks number one among these countries!
W:Surely not! India tops the list with three million homeless people.
M:Well, it depends on how you look at it. Although we have a million fewer homeless people than India, we have the highest percentage of homeless people.
(Text 7)
M:Hello, Madam. We’re doing a survey of our customers. How often do you come to the club?
W:Three times a week, usually.

W:Oh, no, I can’t. Maybe 8 kilometers.
M:Do you use the swimming pool? You know, the new swimming pool.
W:No, I don’t. I don’t know how to swim. And I’m scared of water.

W:People are not so honest as they once were.
M:Why do you say so?
W:Some people are tempted to steal in large shops.
M:Did you catch one of them?
W:Yes, on Monday morning. There were few people in the shop, so I could catch the thief easily.
M:Was it a man or a woman?
W:A middle-aged woman. She first bought some small articles. Then she chose one of the most expensive dresses in the shop.
M:Did she catch the dress away quickly regardless of the assistants?
W:Certainly not. An assistant wrapped it up for her and helped her walk out of the shop without paying.
M:An assistant? How could she do that?
W:She is the daughter of the woman. The girl “gave” her mother a free dress once a week!
(Text 9)
W:Good morning, sir. What can I do for you?
M:I would like to rent a car with a good air conditioner.
W:All our cars have air conditioners in them.

M:Yes, it looks fantastic.
W:So you will take the Porsche then, sir?
M:Yes, for three days. And I want to buy the insurance, too. I think it’s necessary.
W:You’re smart to buy it. At 45 dollars for three days, it is a good deal.
M:Can I return the car in San Francisco?
W:San Francisco? No, sir. We only have this office here. You will have to return it here in Los Angeles.
M:OK. It will be fun driving back down the coast. My girlfriend will like it.
W:It’s a beautiful drive.
M:Where are the keys?

(Text 10)
Malls are popular places for Americans to go. Some people spend so much time at malls that they are called “mall rats”. Mall rats shop until they drop in the hundreds of stores under one roof.
People like malls for many reasons. They feel safe because malls have police stations or private security guards. Parking is usually free, and the atmosphere inside is always fine. The newest malls have beautiful rest areas with waterfalls and large green trees.
The largest mall in the United States is the Mall of America in Minnesota. It has 350 stores, eight night clubs, and a seven-acre park! There are parking spaces for 12,750 cars. About 750,000 people shop every week.
The first indoor mall in the United States was built in 1965 in Edina, Minnesota. Now people shop in malls, of course. They also eat in food houses that have food from all over the world. They see movies here. Some people even get their daily exercise by doing the new sport of mall walking. Others go to malls to meet friends. In a word, now residents can actually live in their favourite shopping center.

Now, five years later, the London Lonely Girls Club has more than 35,000 members.
根据第二段中的it is very important for patients to ask their health care providers which OTC medicines are safe for them to use可知,本段中作者建议患者购买非处方药前向医生咨询。
The aging body is not as expert at absorbing, distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are.
Our findings also point out ...experience hearing damage.
后半部分中的early childhood和adult呼应D项中的over the life cycle。

I stuffed my homework in my backpack可知,“我”不情愿地拿出数学作业,逐个完成题目。

I worked on my assignments until the bell rang.
The more I did in class, the more time off I had at home for projects and hobbies.
I do now.Learning how to use your time wisely also means ...

设空处在句中作形式主语,真正的主语是to either miss the signs or just put it down to aging,故填It。
task是可数名词,意为“工作;任务”,此处表泛指,再根据后面的such as rising from a chair and walking可知,应用其复数形式,故填tasks。
设空处与that this style of balance is something to consider一起在句中作状语,且其逻辑主语与suggest之间是主谓关系,故填suggesting。
choose to do sth意为“选择做某事”,故填to do。

(Text 1)
M:I’ll have the steak, French fries and chocolate ice cream for dessert.
W:Oh, no, you know these things are bad for your health. How about
ordering some vegetables and fruits instead?
(Text 2)
W:I hate to say it, but Jacky isn’t doing well in the new film.
M:Well, I think he’s only playing a different type of role. My sister
thinks he is still the best.
(Text 3)
M:I met Sam on the street today.
W:Really? Did he say something about his sister?
M:Yes. Betty ought to be leaving New York very soon, because her
husband, John, has taken a job in Los Angeles.
(Text 4)
M:A power cut. Oh, I have to hand in this report tomorrow.
W:Just take out your cell phone to get the candle in the drawer.
M:OK.
(Text 5)
W:Did you see what that young man did?
M:No. I was looking at the other way.
W:He made a U-turn in the middle of the block and almost hit a boy on a
bicycle.
M:Drivers get crazier these days.
(Text 6)
W:What are you looking at, Jim?
M:I’m reading an article about the world’s homeless population.
W:Homeless population?
M:Yes, sociologists define homeless people as those who have no fixed
shelter on any given night. These figures show five countries with large
homeless population.
W:Wow, that’s amazing. I never realized that there were so many
homeless people in Germany and France.
M:You know what? Our own country the USA ranks number one among
these countries!
W:Surely not! India tops the list with three million homeless people.
M:Well, it depends on how you look at it. Although we have a million
fewer homeless people than India, we have the highest percentage of
homeless people.
(Text 7)
M:Hello, Madam. We’re doing a survey of our customers. How often
do you come to the club?
W:Three times a week, usually.
M:Can you run 10 kilometers in an hour on the running machine?
W:Oh, no, I can’t. Maybe 8 kilometers.
M:Do you use the swimming pool? You know, the new swimming
pool.
W:No, I don’t. I don’t know how to swim. And I’m scared of water.
M:OK. You know, we offer lessons here. I’m sure our trainer can help
you.
(Text 8)
W:People are not so honest as they once were.
M:Why do you say so?
W:Some people are tempted to steal in large shops.
M:Did you catch one of them?
W:Yes, on Monday morning. There were few people in the shop, so I
could catch the thief easily.
M:Was it a man or a woman?
W:A middle-aged woman. She first bought some small articles. Then she
chose one of the most expensive dresses in the shop.
M:Did she catch the dress away quickly regardless of the assistants?
W:Certainly not. An assistant wrapped it up for her and helped her walk
out of the shop without paying.
M:An assistant? How could she do that?
W:She is the daughter of the woman. The girl “gave” her mother a free
dress once a week!
(Text 9)
W:Good morning, sir. What can I do for you?
M:I would like to rent a car with a good air conditioner.
W:All our cars have air conditioners in them.
M:Good. I am here visiting my girlfriend. I want her to have a good time.
W:Oh, is that so? Well, then, let me show you something she
might like.
M:This is a Porsche!
W:Yes. Beautiful, isn’t it?
M:Yes, it looks fantastic.
W:So you will take the Porsche then, sir?
M:Yes, for three days. And I want to buy the insurance, too. I think
it’s necessary.
W:You’re smart to buy it. At 45 dollars for three days, it is a good deal.
M:Can I return the car in San Francisco?
W:San Francisco? No, sir. We only have this office here. You will
have to return it here in Los Angeles.
M:OK. It will be fun driving back down the coast. My girlfriend will like
it.
W:It’s a beautiful drive.
M:Where are the keys?
W:Just a moment, sir. We have to finish filling out the forms first.
(Text 10)
Malls are popular places for Americans to go. Some people spend so
much time at malls that they are called “mall rats”. Mall rats shop until
they drop in the hundreds of stores under one roof.
People like malls for many reasons. They feel safe because malls have
police stations or private security guards. Parking is usually free, and the
atmosphere inside is always fine. The newest malls have beautiful rest
areas with waterfalls and large green trees.
The largest mall in the United States is the Mall of America in
Minnesota. It has 350 stores, eight night clubs, and a seven-acre park!
There are parking spaces for 12,750 cars. About 750,000 people shop
every week.
The first indoor mall in the United States was built in 1965 in Edina,
Minnesota. Now people shop in malls, of course. They also eat in food
houses that have food from all over the world. They see movies here. Some
people even get their daily exercise by doing the new sport of mall
walking. Others go to malls to meet friends. In a word, now residents can
actually live in their favourite shopping center.

Holly Cooke wasn’t a fan of weekends.Whenever Friday rolled
around, it was a reminder that she had no one to spend her spare time
with.
“I was super isolated,” said Cooke, who relocated from Stoke-
on-Trent — a city in central England — to London when she was 22.“I
moved here knowing absolutely no one.” She had high hopes of going to
restaurants, bars and the theater as she had done before, but she didn’t
want to do those activities alone.“I was desiring community; people
who wanted to hang out and have fun,” said Cooke, now 26.
She grew so desperate for company, she said, she eventually found
herself Googling: “How to make friends in London.” The search
proved mostly futile, though she found a few other women who were also
lonely in London on some social media apps.
Cooke decided to create a Facebook group called “The London
Lonely Girls Club”, and invited the people she connected with on the
apps to join. She then asked everyone to meet for brunch (早午餐).“It
was so difficult,” she said, adding that she asked a friend from out of
town to come in for the brunch, in case no one else showed up.“Saying
that you’re lonely and you don’t have people around, admitting to that
was really scary.”
Cooke was pleasantly surprised when five women showed up and they
all got along well. This proved to Cooke that she was not alone in her
loneliness, and that she could help others in the same situation. She
decided to start planning meetups every few weeks, and word slowly
spread about the Facebook group. Now, five years later, the London
Lonely Girls Club has more than 35,000 members.
The London Lonely Girls Club organizes various types of
gatherings, including park picnics, art lessons, dinners and yoga. For
some events, attendees are charged a small fee of about $3 to cover
deposits and other charges associated with securing a venue.
Cooke said she lost count of how many women have made lasting
friendships through her group.“It’s beautiful and it’s rewarding, and it’s
the reason I’ve carried on,” she said.“As long as there is a need, we
will be here.”

When colds and flu hit, many people automatically turn to over-the-
counter (OTC) medicines to push through and treat their symptoms
Although these medicines are easily accessible and widely
used, it might come as a surprise to many people to learn that they are not
risk-free.A study estimated that every year, 26,735 people went to the
emergency room for adverse (有害的) events related to OTC cold and
cough medicines.
When two or more drugs are used together, their interactions can
sometimes produce unexpected harmful effects.Physicians are typically
knowledgeable about potential drug interactions, so it is very important
for patients to ask their health care providers which OTC medicines are
safe for them to use.
It is important to read the package ingredients of OTC medicines
closely to avoid duplication of doses (剂量重复).Cold medicines are
typically made up of multiple ingredients, including pain relievers,
nasal decongestants and cough suppressants or expectorants.A person who
takes a single-ingredient medicine paired with one of these multi-ingredient
medicines can receive an unsafe dose of that ingredient.
While everyone could potentially experience adverse effects from cold
and flu medicines, some groups — including older adults, children and
pregnant women — may be at greater risk.
Older people who are using prescribed (处方的) drugs to treat
multiple health conditions may have a higher risk of drug interactions
because of the higher number of medicines being used at the same time to
treat different conditions. The aging body is not as expert at absorbing,
distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are. This can put
older adults at higher risk for an overdose and drug-to-drug interactions
with some medicines.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention do not recommend giving cold medicines to
children under age 4.Because of a variety of factors, young children have
a higher risk of an accidental overdose and adverse events that could lead
to death.

Hearing loss may increase the risk of dementia (痴呆), but using
hearing aids lowered the risk so it’s similar to those without hearing loss,
according to a new study.Researchers followed more than 437,000 people
from the UK Biobank, a large biomedical database and research resource
that follows local residents in the long term. They looked at each person’s
risk of dementia, self-reported use of hearing aids and medical records to
see if the person developed dementia.
“Our study provides the best evidence to date to suggest that hearing
aids could be a minimally invasive, cost-effective treatment to reduce the
potential impact of hearing loss on dementia,” corresponding author
Dongshan Zhu, professor at Shandong University in China, said in a
statement.“Our findings also point out the urgent need for the early
introduction of hearing aids when someone starts to experience hearing
damage.” The research accounted for other factors, including
loneliness, social isolation and depression, but found that untreated
hearing loss still had a strong association with dementia.
Tom Dening, a professor of dementia research, who wasn’t
involved in the research, recently began wearing hearing aids.He hopes
that these findings will help him care for patients better.“We need to use
studies like this to encourage the public not to be ashamed of hearing
problems,” he said, “and to seek treatment sooner rather than later.”
Many adults need hearing aids, but not enough use them.Dr Karina
De Sousa, the lead author of a new study looking at over-the-counter
(无需医师处方即可出售的) hearing aids, said, “There are many
potential reasons people opt not to get hearing aids, but one has been the
accessibility of the devices.” And this is the issue her study wants to
tackle.
This small, preliminary (初步的) study found that a self-fitting,
over-the-counter hearing aid could be as good an option for some people as
those fitted by a hearing specialist.“One thing to remember is that over-
the-counter hearing aids are not a one-size-fits-all option,” De Sousa
added.“If you don’t meet the specified criteria (标准) for wearing an
over-the-counter hearing aid, I would recommend seeking the help of a
hearing professional.”

one leg to put a shoe on, and you’ve stopped doing that at some

It was a sunny day.Anabia, an 11-year-old girl, was excited
because today was the drawing contest at her school.Anabia was really
good at drawing and usually got the highest marks in art.Her teachers
would often ask her to make posters for school plays and call on her during
free periods to help with cuttings, drawing, shading, colouring and
much more. There was an art competition taking place in school and Anabia
had worked really hard and wanted to win it.But there was one thing that
was disturbing her today.
Recently, a new girl, Rida, had joined her class. She was also
interested in art but she was not as good at drawing as Anabia was.Miss
Saima, the art teacher, helped Rida and taught her tips and tricks to
improve her drawing skill. And now Rida was also considered among the
best artists in grade six.
Rida was quick, smart and intelligent.Anabia became jealous (嫉
妒的) of Rida’s intelligence and felt that the new girl would be tough to
beat.
So that day, for the art competition, Miss Saima took all the
students to the art room, told them their roll numbers and gave important
instructions.Anabia’s roll number was 16, while Rida was number 17.The
bell rang, indicating the beginning of the contest.Miss Saima wrote on the
board: make a scene of a sunset with a flowing river and a sailing boat.
Anabia knew that the best tools to make a sunset were oil pastels (油
Anabia started to look for her oil pastels in her art bag. Then, after
looking through the bag, she remembered that she had left them at
home.So she got up to tell Miss Saima.
Miss Saima was disappointed at Anabia’s carelessness and told her
that she could not help her, as it was her responsibility to come prepared
for the contest that had been announced a week in advance.Anabia’s best
friends were also there, but none of them offered to share anything,
much to Anabia’s surprise and disappointment.

Anabia’s eyes filled with tears.Rida, overhearing the conversation,
immediately offered help.Anabia felt very grateful. After completing her
work, Anabia felt guilty about how she had been feeling jealous of such a
kind-natured girl. When the contest ended, she went to Rida and said
hesitantly.“I never realised you were so caring. You always did things so
well, and that made me jealous and I said bad things about you.I’m
sorry.” “Look, I also used to judge people sometimes. But later I found
they were not as I had e on, it’s okay to feel this way
sometimes,” Rida said with a smile.
Then Rida held Anabia’s hand, and the two girls waited for the
winners to be announced. Finally, Rida got the second place and the first
prize went to Anabia.Anabia excitedly walked up to the stage and spoke,
“I’m really happy to win this prize, but happier that I found a new,
caring and trustworthy friend today. The story behind finding such a nice
friend is that I forgot my pastels and would not be standing here if Rida had
not shared her pastels with me.It is only because of you, Rida, that I
have this prize. Thanks, my dear friend!”
