Be a critical① news reader!
Firefighters put out tower block② fire
Firefighters quickly put out the Henderson Tower fire last
night.[1]The fire, which is thought to have started from the 8th floor,
spread quickly through the tower block on Sunday night, leaving people
on the upper floors trapped③.[2]Fears grew that the number of deaths
could reach 5, according to figures released④ by emergency services
⑤.[3]Fire engines⑥ and ambulances⑦, called at 9:30 p.m., reached
the scene within 15 minutes.By this time, the fire had extended⑧ to the
15th floor.Firefighters got the situation under control⑨ around 11
p.m.[4]There is concern that the construction⑩ company that built the
tower block had not followed fire safety rules.

[3]动词-ed短语called at 9:30 p.m. Fire engines

only suffered minor injuries.[6]She recalled, “I was about to have a
bath when I heard people screaming and dogs barking . I looked
outside and the smoke was choking me.It was like an awful dream.”
[7]Mr Peterson, head of the fire service, confirms that a dropped

[8]We rely on news to learn about what is happening in the world
around us.However, we usually find that reports on the same events
contain different or even contradictory information .How do these
differences come about ?
Reading news reports critically
[9]It is advisable to remember that journalists may have different
priorities , which would influence how they report an event. Let’s take
the two news reports on the Henderson Tower fire as an example .We can
see that the first news report pays more attention to the rescue efforts,
while the second talks more about deaths and injuries. When we read more
than one report, we come to understand an event in a more
comprehensive way.

[10]Even if news reports are written from basically the same
perspective, they may contradict each other in terms of factual
details, as events in the real world are usually complicated and constantly
changing. For instance , the numbers of deaths differ in the two news
reports on the Henderson Tower fire.[11]When we come across such
factual differences, we should not rush to the conclusion that one of the
news reports gives false information.
Instead, check when the reports were written.News reports written at
different stages of an event could contain different information as new facts
are brought to light .Another aspect worthy of mention is that journalists
may approach information they get from research or interviews
differently.Suppose emergency services’ estimates of the number of deaths
vary between 5 and 9.Journalists may choose to present the minimum ,
the maximum or something in between in their news
reports.[12]Therefore, checking different sources enables us to draw a
more informed conclusion.

maximum n.

[13]To sum up, it is wise to read news reports written from
various perspectives and at different stages, which brings us a more
accurate understanding of a situation. We also need to be critical about the
information we receive and remember not to blindly trust what we have
read.[14]Though journalists are committed to presenting the truth, it is
better to use our own judgement than rely entirely on news reports. With
great discrimination , every one of us has the potential to be a critical
news reader.
语;动词-ed短语written from various perspectives and at different stages

Launched last April and supported by the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP), Bilan Media, Somalia’s first all-
women news outlet, has brought together six highly qualified female
Somali journalists, each with years of experience writing news or
broadcasting on radio stations or local TV. Jocelyn Mason from the UNDP
described the aims of Bilan at its creation:“We hope it will be a game
changer for the Somali media scene, opening up new opportunities for
women journalists and shining light on new subjects that have been
ignored, particularly those that are important for women.”
“Somali female journalists are often refused training opportunities
and promotions, and when a woman does reach a position of authority,
she is often ignored while more junior male figures get to call the
shots,” the UNDP said in a statement.“News coverage reflects this,
with a lack of programming on issues that are seen as primarily affecting
women, including childcare and equal political representation.”
Bilan reporting has already had an impact. An article last year about
the lack of medical facilities for displaced (流离失所的) Somalis living
in make-do camps in an outlying district of Mogadishu led to the creation
of a small hospital at the site. One in-depth article last October helped raise
a pressing alarm about Somalia’s approaching humanitarian crisis and
famine (饥荒).Bilan journalists visiting three different regions of the
country warned against repeating the mistakes of 2011 when some 100,
000 Somalis died of hunger before there was an official declaration of
famine, which finally left nearly 260,000 dead.
But the female journalists of Bilan are not just challenging local
newsroom culture. They sometimes have to persuade their own families that
they should chase their dreams to be professional journalists.Fathi
Mohamed Ahmed, the chief editor of Bilan, recalls,“My
grandmother always said, ‘It’s not good for you.Stop, stop, stop!
Please don’t do this job!’ So I hid my work when I started out, for
eight months.” But after the success of Bilan and Ms Ahmed’s career,
things changed.“Now she is OK. She is happy!”Ms Ahmed says,
smiling.“She is proud of me.”

4. Which best describes Bilan’s aims?
A. Reader-focused. B. Global-minded.
C. Persuasive. D. Ambitious.
5. What does the UNDP statement tell us about Somali female journalists?
A. They are at a disadvantage in the workplace.
B. They often perform better than male journalists.
C. They have no chance of becoming senior managers.
D. They prefer covering news about issues affecting women.
Somali female
journalists ... to call the shots可知,索马里女性新闻工作者往往
6. What can be inferred about Bilan’s journalism according to
Paragraph 3?
A. It lacks up-to-date facilities.
B. It focuses on often-hidden voices.
C. It has brought about positive results.
D. It has helped people suffering from famine.
7. What is the attitude of Fathi’s grandmother toward her career now?
A. Favorable. B. Worried.
C. Tolerant. D. Uncaring.

Why should I stay off Facebook and other social media when I am
involved in a lawsuit or personal injury case? Social media has become an
important part of our everyday lives. Facebook, Instagram, and other
social media have changed the way we communicate with friends,
family, and colleagues. Many of us use these platforms to post
opinions, show off our achievements or show our opinions on public
affairs.
This means that social media is public information and can be used
against you. Lawyers can use social media as evidence. They often look for
pictures and posts that could potentially disprove your injury claim. Your
posts can still be found even if your information is private when the posts
potentially are related to your case. The court may determine that your
public posts may lead to admissible evidence. They will not make you offer
entire information, but only what they think is related. Defence lawyers
wish to prove that the injured party, physically, emotionally, or
financially, is lying about their injuries.
Even posting about your emotions can discount your claim greatly.
Say, you are suing (起诉) someone for your pain and suffering
because you are depressed, yet you post pictures of yourself smiling and
you have quoted “Life is good” attached to the photos. If and when the
defence lawyers get a hold of the posts, your pain and suffering claim
may not hold up in court.
Most people only post about the good times on social media, rarely
about the hardships and misfortunes.Insurance companies are allowed to
follow you and gather information as evidence. Social media makes it
easier. Before social media, insurance companies and lawyers had to hire
investigators to follow people around to spy on them. Social media makes
this entirely a lot easier.
If you have posted content related to your claim, you must not
change evidence. Deleting your account would be considered you’re
destroying evidence and that will affect your case. The best practice would
be to stay off social media until your case has come to a close.

A. Supportive. B. Cautious.
C. Disapproval. D. Indifferent.

11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Keep away from social media.
B. Post good and bad things on social media.
C. Communicate with your friends face to face.
D. Stay off social media for a personal injury claim.

Launched last April and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Bilan Media, Somalia’s first all-women news outlet, has brought together six highly qualified female Somali journalists, each with years of experience writing news or broadcasting on radio stations or local TV.Jocelyn Mason from the UNDP described the aims of Bilan at its creation:“We hope it will be a game changer for the Somali media scene, opening up new opportunities for women journalists and shining light on new subjects that have been ignored, particularly those that are important for women.”

Why should I stay off Facebook and other social media when I am involved in a lawsuit or personal injury case? Social media has become an important part of our everyday lives. Facebook, Instagram, and other social media have changed the way we communicate with friends, family, and colleagues. Many of us use these platforms to post opinions, show off our achievements or show our opinions on public affairs.
This means that social media is public information and can be used against you. Lawyers can use social media as evidence. They often look for pictures and posts that could potentially disprove your injury claim. Your posts can still be found even if your information is private when the posts potentially are related to your case. The court may determine that your public posts may lead to admissible evidence. They will not make you offer entire information, but only what they think is related. Defence lawyers wish to prove that the injured party, physically, emotionally, or financially, is lying about their injuries.
Even posting about your emotions can discount your claim greatly. Say, you are suing (起诉) someone for your pain and suffering because you are depressed, yet you post pictures of yourself smiling and you have quoted “Life is good” attached to the photos. If and when the defence lawyers get a hold of the posts, your pain and suffering claim may not hold up in court.
Most people only post about the good times on social media, rarely about the hardships and misfortunes.Insurance companies are allowed to follow you and gather information as evidence. Social media makes it easier. Before social media, insurance companies and lawyers had to hire investigators to follow people around to spy on them. Social media makes this entirely a lot easier.
If you have posted content related to your claim, you must not change evidence. Deleting your account would be considered you’re destroying evidence and that will affect your case. The best practice would be to stay off social media until your case has come to a close.
8.Why does the writer begin the passage with a question?
A.To describe the drawback of Facebook.
B.To provide the background information.
C.To give his argument and attract readers.
D.To stress the function of the social media.
9.What does the underlined word “admissible” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Powerful. B.Final.
C.Acceptable. D.Equal.
10.What’s the writer’s attitude towards social media?
A.Supportive. B.Cautious.
C.Disapproval. D.Indifferent.
11.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Keep away from social media.
B.Post good and bad things on social media.
C.Communicate with your friends face to face.
D.Stay off social media for a personal injury claim.

Firefighters put out tower block② fire
Firefighters quickly put out the Henderson Tower fire last night.[1]The fire, which is thought to have started from the 8th floor, spread quickly through the tower block on Sunday night, leaving people on the upper floors trapped③.[2]Fears grew that the number of deaths could reach 5, according to figures released④ by emergency services⑤.[3]Fire engines⑥ and ambulances⑦, called at 9:30 p.m., reached the scene within 15 minutes.By this time, the fire had extended⑧ to the 15th floor.Firefighters got the situation under control⑨ around 11 p.m.[4]There is concern that the construction⑩ company that built the tower block had not followed fire safety rules.
The fire; be thought to have done ...

[3]动词-ed短语called at 9:30 p.m.作后置定语,修饰Fire engines and ambulances,其相当于一个非限制性定语从句 which were called at 9:30 p.m.。

Deadly fire in tower block causes serious damage

I looked outside and the smoke was choking me.It was like an awful dream.”
[7]Mr Peterson, head of the fire service, confirms that a dropped cigarette end on a carpet of the 8th floor started the fire and that the automatic fire alarms did not go off quickly enough to prevent the disaster.A team is currently investigating the accident further.

Reading news reports critically
[8]We rely on news to learn about what is happening in the world around us.However, we usually find that reports on the same events contain different or even contradictory information .How do these differences come about ?
[9]It is advisable to remember that journalists may have different priorities , which would influence how they report an event. Let’s take the two news reports on the Henderson Tower fire as an example .We can see that the first news report pays more attention to the rescue efforts, while the second talks more about deaths and injuries. When we read more than one report, we come to understand an event in a more comprehensive way.
作真正的主语;that引导宾语从句;which引导非限制性定语从句,指代journalists may have different priorities。
[10]Even if news reports are written from basically the same perspective, they may contradict each other in terms of factual details, as events in the real world are usually complicated and constantly changing. For instance , the numbers of deaths differ in the two news reports on the Henderson Tower fire.[11]When we come across such factual differences, we should not rush to the conclusion that one of the news reports gives false information. Instead, check when the reports were written.News reports written at different stages of an event could contain different information as new facts are brought to light .Another aspect worthy of mention is that journalists may approach information they get from research or interviews differently.Suppose emergency services’ estimates of the number of deaths vary between 5 and 9.Journalists may choose to present the minimum , the maximum or something in between in their news reports.[12]Therefore, checking different sources enables us to draw a more informed conclusion.

[13]To sum up, it is wise to read news reports written from various perspectives and at different stages, which brings us a more accurate understanding of a situation. We also need to be critical about the information we receive and remember not to blindly trust what we have read.[14]Though journalists are committed to presenting the truth, it is better to use our own judgement than rely entirely on news reports. With great discrimination , every one of us has the potential to be a critical news reader.
