Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania say that for the first
time they have linked social media use to increases in depression and
loneliness. The idea that social media are anything but social when it comes
to mental health has been talked about for years, but not many studies
have managed to actually find links between the two. To do that, Penn
researchers, led by psychologist Melissa Hunt, designed a study that
focused on WeChat, Snapchat and Instagram.
The study was conducted with 143 participants, who before they
began, had completed a mood survey and sent along photos of their
battery screens, showing how often they were using their phones to
access social media.“We set out to do a much more complete study which
attempts to imitate real life,”Hunt said.
The study divided the participants into two groups: The first group
was allowed to maintain their normal social media using habits. The
other, the control group, was restricted to 10 minutes per day on social
media. The restrictions were put in place for three weeks and then the
participants returned and were tested for outcomes such as fear of missing
out, anxiety, depression and loneliness.
The results showed a very clear link between social media use and
increased levels of depression and loneliness.“Using less social media
than you normally do would lead to significant decreases in both
depression and loneliness,” Hunt said.
Social media invites what Hunt calls “increased social
comparison”.“When you’re online, it can sometimes seem that
everyone else is cooler and having more fun and involved in more things
and you’re left out,” Hunt said. And that’s just generally
discouraging.“Every minute you spend online is a minute when you are
not doing your work or not meeting a friend for dinner or having a deep
conversation with your roommate. And these real-life activities are the ones
that can encourage self-esteem and self-worth,” Hunt added.
“People are on their devices, and that’s not going to change,”
she said. But as in life, a bit of control goes a long way.

“Residents of the tiny Thai island, which jumped into the global
spotlight last week after being ranked No.1 on World Beach Guide’s ‘Top
100 beaches on Earth 2024’, are redoubling efforts to preserve its
ecosystem,” Hat Chao Mai National Park chief Prit Narasrit said.
“Koh Kradan will remain closed to tourists four months a year —
from 1 June to 30 September — to ensure the beach does not experience
the same outcome as the Phi Phi Islands,” Mr Prit said.
Phi Phi was damaged after the movie The Beach was released in 2000.
The movie caused a rise in tourism to the area, which was not prepared
for the flow of visitors. This led to overcrowding and environmental
damage, and many of the beaches were destroyed.
“Residents, business owners and park officials will continue to
make preserving the island’s ecosystem, including its coral reefs and
marine life, their top priority,” Mr Prit added.
The 2.5-square-kilometre island is famous for its white-sand
beaches, while its shallow, glassy waters invite easy trips into coral
reefs full of marine life. One side of the island is well-known for its
breathtaking sunrises, while the other is even more famous for its
contemplative sunsets.
“Tourists are welcome,” Mr Prit said, “but they should take
care not to litter or harm the marine life, and do their part to protect Koh
Kradan’s beauty as well as its ecosystem.”
“Regardless of the awards given, everyone is doing his best to
protect the island. Hat Chao Mai National Park will now focus more on
regulations to maintain the beauty of our environment,” Mr Prit said.
Mr Prit said, “More tourist arrivals are unavoidable now that the
island’s beaches have gained global popularity. The marine park will invest
more in the island’s infrastructure, including water and electricity, so
visitors can have a good experience.” “Visitors are also required to
strictly observe our regulations,” he added.

If you’re an admirer of 17th-century European decorative arts,
you’re likely a fan of chinoiserie. Broadly defined as the West’s
interpretation of Asian culture, chinoiserie — its name taken from the
French term for “in the Chinese style” — can be seen in everything
from textiles (纺织品) to wallcoverings and furniture.
Chinoiserie began to take hold in the West after the Dutch East India
Company established a trade route to China in 1602. This new route,
taken from the Portuguese, enabled the import of Chinese tea, silk,
spices, and porcelain (瓷器) to Europe, which excited interest in
faraway lands. “Europeans, enamored of the Asian aesthetic (审
美), began copying the imagery found on the goods brought back from
the Far East. Eventually, they started making it their own,” says David
Conradsen, who works at the Saint Louis Art Museum.
The first expression of this aesthetic was Delftware, famed for its
blue-and-white designs similar to those first seen in China and, later, in
high demand by Europeans who appreciated the craftsmanship and
attention to detail found in the original wares (器物). “Chinoiserie first
started as porcelain in the Netherlands,” says Conradsen.“The Dutch
made cheaper European copies; then it spread. The imagery gets applied
to the decorative arts, cloth, furniture, and even architectural
elements.”Today, people use chinoiserie in more of a modern sense.
Karla Schuster, business development coordinator at the Refind
Room, in Brentwood, has seen an uptick in the popularity of Asian-
inspired looks. At press time, the shop was selling a striking black-and-
gold chinoiserie secretary. Schuster doesn’t expect the piece to last long
there. “Chinoiserie pieces are really hot,”she says.“The blue-and-
white porcelain jar trend brought back an interest in the style, and the
Grandmillennial style that’s so in right now is contributing to its popularity
among young people.”
Robert Fletcher, the owner of St. Louis-based online antique shop
Fletcher-Green, describes chinoiserie as timeless, not trendy.
“Millennials,” Fletcher says, “have gravitated to the style because
of their commitment to the environment. They are green and interested in
preservation. There is nothing greener than antiques, chinoiserie
included.”

Setting a goal — anything from getting a degree or landing a new job
to achieving a new level of physical fitness — is a big step toward
improving your life. 16 So how do you follow through on your
commitments when you just don’t feel like putting in the work?
Put your goal on the calendar
One way to give a boost to your internal motivation is to create some
external motivation:a target date. Whatever it is you’re aiming to
accomplish, put it on the calendar. 17 Examples include preparing for
a test or taking a course with a fixed end date.
Plan for imperfection
As you think about your goal, write down a list of the things that
could get in your way. 18 How can you plan ahead for when your
Internet goes out?Maybe you could keep a few lecture videos downloaded
to your phone or computer for offline access, or you could identify a
nearby coffee shop that offers free Wi-Fi.
 19
Choose something that you already do every day as a trigger (诱
因) for the action you want to turn into a habit. Write out an “if-then”
plan. For example, if I get up and brush my teeth, then I will
immediately put on my workout clothes. Making this plan and committing
it to writing could increase the likelihood of following through.
Track your progress
Seeing progress can be highly motivating. You’ll find many tools out
there to help you track your goals. 20 Or you might opt for a free tool
like Trello, which allows you to create a personalized digital task board to
divide your big goal into daily, weekly, monthly, or even yearly sub-
goals.
A. Make working toward your goal a habit.
B. Reward yourself for the little wins as well as the big ones.
C. You may be working toward a goal with a finish date built in.
D. Once you have your list, make a plan on how to handle the barriers.
E. Depending on your goal, this might mean joining a study group or
running team.
F. But following through to achieve what you’ve set out to accomplish can
be challenging.
G. This could be as simple as a to-do list where you can cross off tasks as
you complete them.

It’s no secret that minors are constantly exposed to advertisements that
encourage them to make purchases. From my perspective, such
advertising should be banned mainly due to moral concerns associated with
advertisers taking advantage of the inexperience of minors.Minors may be
easily persuaded into making irresponsible buying decisions, possibly
leading to unhealthy eating habits or behavioral problems.
However, it’s important to recognize some advertisements do
promote healthy lifestyles or have educational value. Therefore, we
should carefully weigh the pros and cons of advertisements targeted at
minors, and explore regulation and parental involvement as potential
solutions to these concerns.

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania say that for the first time they have linked social media use to increases in depression and loneliness. The idea that social media are anything but social when it comes to mental health has been talked about for years, but not many studies have managed to actually find links between the two. To do that, Penn researchers, led by psychologist Melissa Hunt, designed a study that focused on WeChat, Snapchat and Instagram.
The study was conducted with 143 participants, who before they began, had completed a mood survey and sent along photos of their battery screens, showing how often they were using their phones to access social media.“We set out to do a much more complete study which attempts to imitate real life,”Hunt said.
The study divided the participants into two groups: The first group was allowed to maintain their normal social media using habits. The other, the control group, was restricted to 10 minutes per day on social media. The restrictions were put in place for three weeks and then the participants returned and were tested for outcomes such as fear of missing out, anxiety, depression and loneliness.
The results showed a very clear link between social media use and increased levels of depression and loneliness.“Using less social media than you normally do would lead to significant decreases in both depression and loneliness,” Hunt said.
Social media invites what Hunt calls “increased social comparison”.“When you’re online, it can sometimes seem that everyone else is cooler and having more fun and involved in more things and you’re left out,” Hunt said. And that’s just generally discouraging.“Every minute you spend online is a minute when you are not doing your work or not meeting a friend for dinner or having a deep conversation with your roommate. And these real-life activities are the ones that can encourage self-esteem and self-worth,” Hunt added.
“People are on their devices, and that’s not going to change,” she said. But as in life, a bit of control goes a long way.

“Residents of the tiny Thai island, which jumped into the global spotlight last week after being ranked No.1 on World Beach Guide’s ‘Top 100 beaches on Earth 2024’, are redoubling efforts to preserve its ecosystem,” Hat Chao Mai National Park chief Prit Narasrit said.
“Koh Kradan will remain closed to tourists four months a year — from 1 June to 30 September — to ensure the beach does not experience the same outcome as the Phi Phi Islands,” Mr Prit said.
Phi Phi was damaged after the movie The Beach was released in 2000. The movie caused a rise in tourism to the area, which was not prepared for the flow of visitors. This led to overcrowding and environmental damage, and many of the beaches were destroyed.
“Residents, business owners and park officials will continue to make preserving the island’s ecosystem, including its coral reefs and marine life, their top priority,” Mr Prit added.
The 2.5-square-kilometre island is famous for its white-sand beaches, while its shallow, glassy waters invite easy trips into coral reefs full of marine life. One side of the island is well-known for its breathtaking sunrises, while the other is even more famous for its contemplative sunsets.
“Tourists are welcome,” Mr Prit said, “but they should take care not to litter or harm the marine life, and do their part to protect Koh Kradan’s beauty as well as its ecosystem.”
“Regardless of the awards given, everyone is doing his best to protect the island. Hat Chao Mai National Park will now focus more on regulations to maintain the beauty of our environment,” Mr Prit said.
Mr Prit said, “More tourist arrivals are unavoidable now that the island’s beaches have gained global popularity. The marine park will invest more in the island’s infrastructure, including water and electricity, so visitors can have a good experience.” “Visitors are also required to strictly observe our regulations,” he added.
8.Why did Mr Prit mention Phi Phi?

If you’re an admirer of 17th-century European decorative arts, you’re likely a fan of chinoiserie. Broadly defined as the West’s interpretation of Asian culture, chinoiserie — its name taken from the French term for “in the Chinese style” — can be seen in everything from textiles (纺织品) to wallcoverings and furniture.
Chinoiserie began to take hold in the West after the Dutch East India Company established a trade route to China in 1602. This new route, taken from the Portuguese, enabled the import of Chinese tea, silk, spices, and porcelain (瓷器) to Europe, which excited interest in faraway lands. “Europeans, enamored of the Asian aesthetic (审美), began copying the imagery found on the goods brought back from the Far East. Eventually, they started making it their own,” says David Conradsen, who works at the Saint Louis Art Museum.
The first expression of this aesthetic was Delftware, famed for its blue-and-white designs similar to those first seen in China and, later, in high demand by Europeans who appreciated the craftsmanship and attention to detail found in the original wares (器物). “Chinoiserie first started as porcelain in the Netherlands,” says Conradsen.“The Dutch made cheaper European copies; then it spread. The imagery gets applied to the decorative arts, cloth, furniture, and even architectural elements.”Today, people use chinoiserie in more of a modern sense.
Karla Schuster, business development coordinator at the Refind Room, in Brentwood, has seen an uptick in the popularity of Asian-inspired looks. At press time, the shop was selling a striking black-and-gold chinoiserie secretary. Schuster doesn’t expect the piece to last long there. “Chinoiserie pieces are really hot,”she says.“The blue-and-white porcelain jar trend brought back an interest in the style, and the Grandmillennial style that’s so in right now is contributing to its popularity among young people.”
Robert Fletcher, the owner of St. Louis-based online antique shop Fletcher-Green, describes chinoiserie as timeless, not trendy. “Millennials,” Fletcher says, “have gravitated to the style because of their commitment to the environment. They are green and interested in preservation. There is nothing greener than antiques, chinoiserie included.”
12.What does the underlined word “enamored” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Ashamed. B.Careful.
C.Fond. D.Ignorant.
13.How did the Dutch make chinoiserie popular?
A.By teaching people about aesthetics.
B.By encouraging people to travel to China.
C.By making porcelain copies at a reduced cost.
D.By introducing more original chinoiserie wares.
14.What does Schuster say about the black-and-gold chinoiserie secretary?
A.It’ll be sold in no time.
B.It’ll be remade with stronger material.
C.It needs a constant indoor temperature.
D.It inspires the Grandmillennial style.
15.Why do millennials show a preference for chinoiserie according to Fletcher?
A.They have high artistic tastes.
B.They advocate multiculturalism.

Setting a goal — anything from getting a degree or landing a new job to achieving a new level of physical fitness — is a big step toward improving your life. 16 So how do you follow through on your commitments when you just don’t feel like putting in the work?
Put your goal on the calendar
One way to give a boost to your internal motivation is to create some external motivation:a target date. Whatever it is you’re aiming to accomplish, put it on the calendar. 17 Examples include preparing for a test or taking a course with a fixed end date.
Plan for imperfection
As you think about your goal, write down a list of the things that could get in your way. 18 How can you plan ahead for when your Internet goes out?Maybe you could keep a few lecture videos downloaded to your phone or computer for offline access, or you could identify a nearby coffee shop that offers free Wi-Fi.
 19
Choose something that you already do every day as a trigger (诱因) for the action you want to turn into a habit. Write out an “if-then” plan. For example, if I get up and brush my teeth, then I will immediately put on my workout clothes. Making this plan and committing it to writing could increase the likelihood of following through.
Track your progress
Seeing progress can be highly motivating. You’ll find many tools out there to help you track your goals. 20 Or you might opt for a free tool like Trello, which allows you to create a personalized digital task board to divide your big goal into daily, weekly, monthly, or even yearly sub-goals.
A.Make working toward your goal a habit.
B.Reward yourself for the little wins as well as the big ones.
C.You may be working toward a goal with a finish date built in.
D.Once you have your list, make a plan on how to handle the barriers.
E.Depending on your goal, this might mean joining a study group or running team.
F.But following through to achieve what you’ve set out to accomplish can be challenging.
G.This could be as simple as a to-do list where you can cross off tasks as you complete them.
