1. go from bad to worse 日益恶化
2. more outdoor activities 更多户外活动
3. turn on the lights 开灯
4. have an impact on 对……有影响

二、写作常用句式(注意加蓝部分的表达)
1. As we all know, the eyes are of great importance/significance to us.
众所周知,眼睛对我们来说非常重要。
2. According to a recent survey, more and more school students have
become short-sighted.
根据最近的一项调查,越来越多的学生变得近视了。
3. However, various bad habits contribute to poor vision.
然而,各种不良习惯会导致视力下降。
4. Some students read books or do homework for too long without breaks.
有些学生看书或做作业的时间太长,没有休息时间。
5. Some students are exposed to the screens of electronic devices for long
hours.
一些学生长时间暴露在电子设备的屏幕前。
6. From my perspective, people’s bad reading behaviour makes their
eyesight weaker.
依我看,人们看书时的不良行为使得他们视力变弱。

There really are apps for everything, and some could end up saving
your life.
What3words
This free download is one of a growing number of smartphone apps
that could mean the difference between life and death. What3words divides
the world into 3×3 metre squares, giving each one a unique combination
of three words. This allows emergency services — or anyone else you give
the location to — to reach you if you have an Internet connection. It is used
by emergency services in the UK and other countries and has saved
thousands of lives.
WhatsApp
Lots of us use WhatsApp for messaging and calling, but do you
know it also has a Live Location feature that can let a loved one know your
whereabouts in case you’re in danger?
You can simply press the “+” key in a chat, select
“Location”, and then press “Share Live Location”, which enables
any participant in the chat to see your location in real time for the period
you choose.
Stay Alive
With mental health problems on the increase, this suicide prevention
app could be extremely helpful. Developed by Grassroots Suicide
Prevention, it offers a wealth of resources, ranging from ways of
staying calm when you feel upset or have other bad moods, to breathing
exercises and direct links to national and local crisis resources. And this
app doesn’t ask for an Internet connection to get the information.
St John Ambulance First Aid
An app like this is more useful for saving someone else’s life than
your own, but it’s a must-have on your smartphone. It gives advice on
dealing with emergencies, including choking, allergic reactions and
performing CPR. You don’t have to have an Internet connection in order to
use it.

We’ve had weather forecasts for years. Forecasting our near-term
health is far harder.Yet knowing early that we may be coming down with
the flu could be greatly helpful. Wearable technology, such as smart
watches, is beginning to provide just such early warnings.
A research team asked 49 volunteers to wear wristbands with sensors
before and after they received a cold or flu virus. At least once per
second, their wristbands recorded heart rates, body movements, skin
temperatures and more. In nine out of every ten participants, these data
showed signs of developing illness at least a day before symptoms (症
状) appeared.
This early warning can help stop infections in the beginning. It may
head off serious symptoms that otherwise would send weak people into
hospital, allowing them to get some rest, reduce their stress and perhaps
take drugs. And knowing you’re sick before you have symptoms can warn
you to lay low so you can reduce the chance of spreading your disease.
However, these systems aren’t yet ready for the real world. One
challenge is that many viral infections have similar symptoms. In fact,
many things other than viruses cause the same symptoms. Examples
include food poisoning, asthma or seasonal allergies. Similarly, heart
rates respond to things that have nothing to do with infections, such as
exercise and scary movies. What’s more, in real life, we don’t know
who was exposed to some virus and when, so that post-exposure time
window won’t be known. Potentially infected people might be those whose
data go beyond a certain value in any two-hour window. But the team has
not yet tested how well the prediction model would work in this setting.
The study sounds exciting, but much work is left to do. Future
systems will likely include other types of bodily changes that pinpoint
developing illness. And researchers will be fine-tuning (微调) those
systems by analyzing how well they predict effects in thousands of people.

EAST ORANGE, N. J. (CBS New York) — A third grader who
knew what to do in an emergency and took action is being credited with
saving a life at school.
Kori Scott, 9, was honored Thursday by the mayor of East
Orange, New Jersey for her quick-thinking and bravery when a friend
began choking in the lunchroom about two weeks ago.
“I could just tell, because when I saw her starting to swallow, she
stopped and started pounding on the table,” she told CBS2’s Clark
Fouraker.Scott said her friend was eating a burrito and left the cafeteria at
Bowser Elementary looking for water. “I started following her and when I
came out, she was holding onto a rail,” she said.
It would be an urgent situation for anyone, but Scott remembered
something important as she left the lunchroom — her friend would not be
able to take a drink of water, because she was choking. “I knew if she
was holding onto the railing and she went to lean her head over, she
would have hit her head and she would have passed out,” she said. “So
I pulled her over, did the Heimlich manoeuvre — one, two, three. But
I did it one more time to make sure that she wasn’t choking.”
“I picked her up from school. The teacher came out near to tears and
she was like ‘Kori did an exceptional job, an amazing job today.’And
I was like, ‘What?’ She said, ‘She saved a life.’” Scott’s
mother, Kiana, said.Scott learned to do the Heimlich after her father
performed it on her when she was three.
“Kori’s smart instincts (直觉) and quick action are the
characteristics of a true hero,” said Mayor Ted Green. For her bravery,
the mayor is making Scott “Mayor-For-The-Day” on Friday.
Her friend may not be alive today if the girl hadn’t known exactly
what to do and sprung into action. In addition to learning the Heimlich
manoeuvre from her father, Kori has been training classes with her
mother,a security guard with the school district.

Heat can kill. It lowers a worker’s ability to concentrate and leads to
notable increases in workplace injuries, research suggests.
Yet, for reasons including financial need, workplace pressure and a
lack of awareness of the health impacts of high temperatures, many
people continue to work past their heat tolerance.Outdoor workers,
notably those within the construction and agricultural industry, are the
most affected by rising heat. Even the fittest people in the world are
impressionable like the Olympic athletes collapsing in the baking heat of
Tokyo.
There are some easy ways to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion (热
衰竭). Making full use of work hours to avoid workers being out when
the sun is at its hottest may have the greatest effect on employee health.
Individualized, wearable sensors could be a useful tool for
determining likely heat exhaustion. Early adoption of these devices would
be a win-win, according to Dr Jennifer Runkle, an environmental
epidemiologist: boosting productivity and reducing injury “while
ensuring the health and safety of an ageing workforce and reducing the risk
of heat exhaustion”.
Wider take-up of wearable heat sensors by employees, employers
and health care providers would also help overcome gaps in heat
awareness.
“One important finding we discovered in our research with outdoor
workers is that there was a mismatch between workers’ ability to sense heat
risk and their actual exposure to extreme heat gained by wearables,”
said Dr Runkle.
Another aid could be wearable cooling technology, but such devices
are limited in availability. One such device is Sony’s Reon Pocket 2,
which was launched in April. A wearable cooling or warming device worn
inside clothing, it uses electrical conductors that transfer heat when
electricity is run through them.
There are promising examples of companies taking more
responsibility for protecting workers from extreme heat, such as
managers of bus drivers in Jinan, China. Responsible employers should
be providing drinks and shaded rest areas to outdoor workers.

13. What did Dr Runkle find out?
A. The workforce was ageing rapidly.
B. Wearable heat sensors lacked great accuracy.
C. Employers attached little importance to heat exhaustion.
D. Workers’ heat awareness and actual heat were different.

First aid is an important tool in quickly responding to accidents to
ensure that injuries can be efficiently and immediately handled before a
trained medical professional arrives. First aid in schools is especially
helpful as children often get into accidents that need quick care. 16
Here are some of the benefits coming from having a first aider on site.
A quick response is guaranteed.
First aid is the initial treatment given to a victim. Some injuries do not
require professional assistance. 17 First aiders can help the affected
person feel better and ease pain by performing simple procedures on the
spot.
First aid can save lives.
People equipped with first aid skills can handle emergencies in an
efficient manner. Their professional knowledge and right methods of
treatment can help preserve lives. A trained person is more composed (镇
定的) and confident in critical situations. 18
A greater sense of safety is promoted.
19 They are aware of the fact that they can treat themselves
easily in case an accident occurs. Moreover, they are also trusted by their
friends or loved ones. Having a well-trained first aider around helps them
relax and stay calm in the event of an emergency.
20 Therefore,it is a must for the teachers and students to get a
proper first aid training so that they can contribute to a safe campus. To
ensure the safety of all the staff members and students, it is important to
have first aid in the schools. It is vital to make everyone aware of the
basic methods they should apply after an accident occurs.
A. To sum up, first aid offers a wide range of benefits.
B. Overall, a quick response can make a big difference.
C. People who get first aid training are likely to feel secure.
D. He/She knows the best possible ways to help the victims make it.
E. First aid training gives an individual enough knowledge to last a
lifetime.
F. They can be treated with simple methods such as applying an ice pack,
etc.
G. Whether they are minor or more serious, preventing them worsening is
important.

person与D项中的He/She对应,表示经过训练的急救者能拯救生命,他
/她知道帮助受害者成功(渡过难关)的最佳方法,与本段主旨相符。
19. C 本段小标题说明受过急救培训的人会带来安全感;空后一句也

A research team asked 49 volunteers to wear wristbands with sensors before and after they received a cold or flu virus. At least once per second, their wristbands recorded heart rates, body movements, skin temperatures and more. In nine out of every ten participants, these data showed signs of developing illness at least a day before symptoms (症状) appeared.
This early warning can help stop infections in the beginning. It may head off serious symptoms that otherwise would send weak people into hospital, allowing them to get some rest, reduce their stress and perhaps take drugs. And knowing you’re sick before you have symptoms can warn you to lay low so you can reduce the chance of spreading your disease.
However, these systems aren’t yet ready for the real world. One challenge is that many viral infections have similar symptoms. In fact, many things other than viruses cause the same symptoms. Examples include food poisoning, asthma or seasonal allergies. Similarly, heart rates respond to things that have nothing to do with infections, such as exercise and scary movies. What’s more, in real life, we don’t know who was exposed to some virus and when, so that post-exposure time window won’t be known. Potentially infected people might be those whose data go beyond a certain value in any two-hour window. But the team has not yet tested how well the prediction model would work in this setting.
The study sounds exciting, but much work is left to do. Future systems will likely include other types of bodily changes that pinpoint developing illness. And researchers will be fine-tuning (微调) those systems by analyzing how well they predict effects in thousands of people.

EAST ORANGE, N.J. (CBS New York) — A third grader who knew what to do in an emergency and took action is being credited with saving a life at school.
Kori Scott, 9, was honored Thursday by the mayor of East Orange, New Jersey for her quick-thinking and bravery when a friend began choking in the lunchroom about two weeks ago.
“I could just tell, because when I saw her starting to swallow, she stopped and started pounding on the table,” she told CBS2’s Clark Fouraker.Scott said her friend was eating a burrito and left the cafeteria at Bowser Elementary looking for water. “I started following her and when I came out, she was holding onto a rail,” she said.
It would be an urgent situation for anyone, but Scott remembered something important as she left the lunchroom — her friend would not be able to take a drink of water, because she was choking. “I knew if she was holding onto the railing and she went to lean her head over, she would have hit her head and she would have passed out,” she said. “So I pulled her over, did the Heimlich manoeuvre — one, two, three. But I did it one more time to make sure that she wasn’t choking.”
“I picked her up from school. The teacher came out near to tears and she was like ‘Kori did an exceptional job, an amazing job today.’And I was like, ‘What?’ She said, ‘She saved a life.’” Scott’s mother, Kiana, said.Scott learned to do the Heimlich after her father performed it on her when she was three.
“Kori’s smart instincts (直觉) and quick action are the characteristics of a true hero,” said Mayor Ted Green. For her bravery, the mayor is making Scott “Mayor-For-The-Day” on Friday.
Her friend may not be alive today if the girl hadn’t known exactly what to do and sprung into action. In addition to learning the Heimlich manoeuvre from her father, Kori has been training classes with her mother,a security guard with the school district.
8.What do we know about Kori Scott?
A.She is careful and quick-minded.
B.She performed Heimlich manoeuvre before.
C.She received first aid training from her mother.

A.She took a drink of water to calm down.
B.She pulled her friend over to avoid injuries.
C.She hit her friend’s head to make her pass out.
D.She followed her friend and turned to the adult for help.
10.What is the text mainly about?
A.Scott was honored for saving her choking friend.
B.The teacher was satisfied with Scott’s heroic deeds.
C.First-aid techniques enabled Scott to escape from danger.
D.Father’s previous performance guaranteed Scott’s success.
11.What is the text?
A.A short story.
B.A research paper.
C.A news report.
D.A course advertisement.

Heat can kill. It lowers a worker’s ability to concentrate and leads to notable increases in workplace injuries, research suggests.
Yet, for reasons including financial need, workplace pressure and a lack of awareness of the health impacts of high temperatures, many people continue to work past their heat tolerance.Outdoor workers, notably those within the construction and agricultural industry, are the most affected by rising heat. Even the fittest people in the world are impressionable like the Olympic athletes collapsing in the baking heat of Tokyo.
There are some easy ways to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion (热衰竭). Making full use of work hours to avoid workers being out when the sun is at its hottest may have the greatest effect on employee health.
Individualized, wearable sensors could be a useful tool for determining likely heat exhaustion. Early adoption of these devices would be a win-win, according to Dr Jennifer Runkle, an environmental epidemiologist: boosting productivity and reducing injury “while ensuring the health and safety of an ageing workforce and reducing the risk of heat exhaustion”.
Wider take-up of wearable heat sensors by employees, employers and health care providers would also help overcome gaps in heat awareness.
“One important finding we discovered in our research with outdoor workers is that there was a mismatch between workers’ ability to sense heat risk and their actual exposure to extreme heat gained by wearables,” said Dr Runkle.
Another aid could be wearable cooling technology, but such devices are limited in availability. One such device is Sony’s Reon Pocket 2, which was launched in April. A wearable cooling or warming device worn inside clothing, it uses electrical conductors that transfer heat when electricity is run through them.
There are promising examples of companies taking more responsibility for protecting workers from extreme heat, such as managers of bus drivers in Jinan, China. Responsible employers should be providing drinks and shaded rest areas to outdoor workers.
12.What does the underlined word “impressionable” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Highly impressive. B.Slightly sensible.
C.Easily affected. D.Hardly evaluated.
13.What did Dr Runkle find out?
A.The workforce was ageing rapidly.
B.Wearable heat sensors lacked great accuracy.
C.Employers attached little importance to heat exhaustion.
D.Workers’ heat awareness and actual heat were different.
14.Why are bus drivers in Jinan mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To stress the popularity of Reon Pocket 2.
B.To show their employers are responsible.
C.To reveal they are very tolerant of extreme heat.
D.To describe their unbearable pressure of work.
15.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Adjustments to Work Hours Can Be Life-saving
B.Campaigners Are Calling for Workplace Protection
C.How Can New Technology Protect Outdoor Workers?
D.How Were Body Temperature Monitors Invented?
