If I Had a Time Machine
If I had a time machine, I would go back to the time when I was a
little child. Now I’m on my first trip to the past to meet my grandfather
who left me many years ago.
In an instant, I am standing in front of my grandparents’ house.
Taking a look at the yard, I see my 5-year-old self sitting on my
grandfather’s lap and my grandfather reading a story to me. I, with tears
rolling down my face, cannot help staring at them for a very long time.
Thanks to the time machine, I have a chance to relive the good old
days.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
In August, Jason M. Allen’s piece “Theatre D’opéra Spatial” —
which he created with AI image generator Midjourney — won first place in
the emerging artist division’s “digital arts photography” category at the
Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. The definition for the category
states that digital art refers to works that use “digital technology as part of
the creative process”.
Allen’s award-winning image has led to debates about what,
exactly, it means to be an artist and whether AI can truly make art.“It
felt bad for the exact same reason we don’t let robots participate in the
Olympics,” one Twitter user wrote.“Exciting times ahead for the world
of art and innovation!” another tweeted.
Yet while Allen didn’t use a paintbrush, there was plenty of work
involved, he said.First, he played around with phrasing that led
Midjourney to generate images of women in elegant dresses and space
helmets, in an attempt to mix Victorian-style costuming with space
themes.Over time, with many slight changes to his written instructions,
he created 900 different versions of what led to his final image. Then he
improved the picture’s quality through Gigapixel AI and finally had the
images printed.
Allen is glad the debate over whether AI can be used to make art is
attracting so much attention.“Rather than hating on the technology, we
need to recognize that it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all
move forward,” Allen said.
Cal Duran, one of the judges for the competition, said that while
Allen’s piece included a mention of AI, he didn’t realize that when
judging it.Still, he sticks by his decision to award it first place.“I think
the AI technology may give more opportunities to people who may not find
themselves artists in the conventional way,” he said.

As we live longer and technology continues its rapid development,
we can imagine a future where machines will enlarge our abilities and help
us make better life choices, from health to wealth. Through our dialogue
and digital pieces, artificial intelligence (AI) will understand our life
goals and wishes, our duties and limitations. It will help us plan different
life events, so we can spend more time enjoying life’s moments.
The ability for AI to understand the complexities of language and
slight differences in human conversation is, however, one hurdle (难
关).There are several thousand known living languages in the world
today. Adding to the difficulty are the varied ways words are shared and
used across different cultures, including grammar, levels of education
and styles of the speakers. Google Duplex, the technology supporting
Google Assistant, which places phone calls using a natural-sounding
human voice instead of a robotic one, is an early attempt to address such
challenges in human communication. But this is just the initial step in AI’s
long journey.
Beyond making reservations and conducting simple dialogues,
virtual assistants will need to become far more useful and further fit into
our everyday lives. Not only will they need to foresee what we need before
we ask, but they also need to understand the context of our conversations
and react accordingly. Imagine a snow day when the school is cancelled for
the kids. Knowing that you must now stay at home with your children,
your phone would remind you, asking if you’d like to have your meetings
moved to the following day.
Alternatively, imagine how much more pleasant your journey home from
a business trip would be if your phone could automatically arrange for a
ride waiting to pick you up at the airport, based on your travel plan,
location, and habits. The possibilities are endless.

It seems no one can really agree on the question of “What’s so
funny?”. So imagine trying to teach a robot how to laugh. But that’s
exactly what a team of researchers at Kyoto University in Japan are trying
to design an AI that takes its cues through a shared laughter system. The
scientists describe their innovative approach to building a funny bone for
the Japanese android “Erica” in the latest issue of the journal Frontiers
in Robotics and AI.
“We think that one of the important functions of conversational AI is
empathy,” explained lead author Dr Koji Inoue, an assistant professor
at Kyoto University in the Department of Intelligence Science and
Technology within the Graduate School of Informatics. “One way a robot
can empathize with users is to share their laughter.”
In the shared-laughter model,a human initially laughs and the AI
system responds with laughter as an empathetic response. This approach
required designing three subsystems — one to detect laughter, a second
to decide whether to laugh, and a third to choose the type of appropriate
laughter. The type of laughter is also important, because in some cases a
polite chuckle may be more appropriate than a loud snort of laughter.
The team tested Erica’s new sense of humor by creating four different
short dialogues between a person and Erica with her new shared-laughter
system. Then they asked more than 130 people in total to listen to each
dialogue within the three different conditions — shared-laughter system,
no laughter, all laughter — and evaluated the interactions based on
human-likeness, naturalness and understanding.The shared-laughter
system performed better than either baseline.
“Robots should actually have a distinct character, and we think that
they can show this through their conversational behaviors, such as
laughing, eye gaze, gestures and speaking style,”Inoue added.“We
do not think this is an easy problem at all, and it may well take more than
10 to 20 years before we can finally have a casual chat with a robot like we
would with a friend.”

opened the statement and noticed a charge for $1,175 incurred (引致)
by me in Moose Jaw for something like the Antler Motel. As I have never
had the pleasure of visiting Saskatchewan,Canada, I called the bank to
report it.
The recording from the fraud (欺诈) department told me, “We
are experiencing more calls than usual. Please stay on the line ...” What
then followed was about an hour of repetitive music.
I decided to call again from my mobile phone and chose the “lost or
stolen card” department, while keeping my place for the fraud
department open on my landline (座机).After half an hour, I got
through to a customer service clerk called Marlene. She told me she had to
ask me some verifying (验证性的) questions. My date of birth.I
passed.Next, she asked how many accounts I had in this bank.I guessed
one and passed. Then came the kicker,“When did you last use it?” I
said,“Ages ago.” She replied,“The system does not accept this
answer.You are locked out.”
I continued to wait on my other line for almost three hours until a
clerk called John came on.I told him about the charge, and he asked
whether anybody else had access to my credit card.I told him not to my
knowledge. In addition to never having set foot in Saskatchewan, I was
not even sure how to spell it.After a brief post-midnight chat, he noted
the charge would be removed.
Two days later,I received a survey asking me how I enjoyed this
telephone experience, whether I was okay with a bank clerk getting in
touch with me and whether I would recommend this bank to my friends. I
answered of course.I was just dying to say to them,“Your call is
important to me.Here’s some music you can listen to while I cycle around
my neighbourhood.”

4 Surprising Ways Algae (藻类) Are Driving Innovation
Algae can be a double-edged sword (双刃剑).Increased human
activity and climate change have caused explosions of algae populations in
water bodies around the world — sometimes choking entire ecosystems of
sunlight and oxygen.Even though they are so closely associated with
humanity’s negative impact on Earth, algae could also play key roles in
helping fight pollution, viruses, and more. 17
  Filtering water.
With microplastic pollution documented in almost all water bodies,a
recent study shows that through adsorption (吸附作用),algae can help
filter microplastics out of water. 18
  Fueling air travel.
19 Researchers at a German algae cultivation facility are already
using it to fuel drones. They believe this and other sustainable fuels could
reduce carbon emissions from airplanes by up to 80 per cent.
  Fighting viruses.
Red algae can prevent the replication (复制) of some viruses,
according to a 2020 study. 20 Thus, it could become a powerful
medication to treat HIV,the virus that causes Acquired Immune
Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
    21
In 2019, freshwater algae were launched into space to turn the
carbon dioxide exhaled (呼出) by astronauts on the International Space
Station into oxygen.Since algae are also high in protein, they could
replace up to 30 per cent of astronaut food in the future.
A. Making space food more nutritious.
B. Making long-term space travel possible.
C. These are several ways algae are solving modern problems.
D. Some algae can also filter chemicals that can be used in fertilizers.
E. Brown algae have been shown to stimulate the body’s immune system.
F. Algae can produce more effective biofuels than traditional sources like
soybeans.
G. It aims to harvest algae for energy while keeping the environment
pollution-free.

In August, Jason M.Allen’s piece “Theatre D’opéra Spatial” — which he created with AI image generator Midjourney — won first place in the emerging artist division’s “digital arts photography” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. The definition for the category states that digital art refers to works that use “digital technology as part of the creative process”.
Allen’s award-winning image has led to debates about what, exactly, it means to be an artist and whether AI can truly make art.“It felt bad for the exact same reason we don’t let robots participate in the Olympics,” one Twitter user wrote.“Exciting times ahead for the world of art and innovation!” another tweeted.
Yet while Allen didn’t use a paintbrush, there was plenty of work involved, he said.First, he played around with phrasing that led Midjourney to generate images of women in elegant dresses and space helmets, in an attempt to mix Victorian-style costuming with space themes.Over time, with many slight changes to his written instructions, he created 900 different versions of what led to his final image. Then he improved the picture’s quality through Gigapixel AI and finally had the images printed.
Allen is glad the debate over whether AI can be used to make art is attracting so much attention.“Rather than hating on the technology, we need to recognize that it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward,” Allen said.
Cal Duran, one of the judges for the competition, said that while Allen’s piece included a mention of AI, he didn’t realize that when judging it.Still, he sticks by his decision to award it first place.“I think the AI technology may give more opportunities to people who may not find themselves artists in the conventional way,” he said.

As we live longer and technology continues its rapid development, we can imagine a future where machines will enlarge our abilities and help us make better life choices, from health to wealth. Through our dialogue and digital pieces, artificial intelligence (AI) will understand our life goals and wishes, our duties and limitations. It will help us plan different life events, so we can spend more time enjoying life’s moments.
The ability for AI to understand the complexities of language and slight differences in human conversation is, however, one hurdle (难关).There are several thousand known living languages in the world today. Adding to the difficulty are the varied ways words are shared and used across different cultures, including grammar, levels of education and styles of the speakers. Google Duplex, the technology supporting Google Assistant, which places phone calls using a natural-sounding human voice instead of a robotic one, is an early attempt to address such challenges in human communication. But this is just the initial step in AI’s long journey.
Beyond making reservations and conducting simple dialogues, virtual assistants will need to become far more useful and further fit into our everyday lives. Not only will they need to foresee what we need before we ask, but they also need to understand the context of our conversations and react accordingly. Imagine a snow day when the school is cancelled for the kids. Knowing that you must now stay at home with your children, your phone would remind you, asking if you’d like to have your meetings moved to the following day. Alternatively, imagine how much more pleasant your journey home from a business trip would be if your phone could automatically arrange for a ride waiting to pick you up at the airport, based on your travel plan, location, and habits. The possibilities are endless.
5.What do we know about AI?
A.It stops us living longer.
B.It narrows our abilities.
C.It doesn’t know our limitations.
D.It helps us enjoy life better.
6.What make it hard for AI to understand what humans say?
A.Low levels of speakers.
B.Imperfections of AI.
C.Varieties of languages and cultures.
D.Similarities among languages.
7.Which word can best describe the author’s attitude towards AI?
A.Doubtful. B.Approving.
C.Negative. D.Critical.
8.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.AI Will Replace Humans
B.AI Will Set Goals for Us
C.AI Will Be Part of Our Daily Lives
D.AI Will Meet Challenges

It seems no one can really agree on the question of “What’s so funny?”. So imagine trying to teach a robot how to laugh. But that’s exactly what a team of researchers at Kyoto University in Japan are trying to design an AI that takes its cues through a shared laughter system. The scientists describe their innovative approach to building a funny bone for the Japanese android “Erica” in the latest issue of the journal Frontiers in Robotics and AI.
“We think that one of the important functions of conversational AI is empathy,” explained lead author Dr Koji Inoue, an assistant professor at Kyoto University in the Department of Intelligence Science and Technology within the Graduate School of Informatics. “One way a robot can empathize with users is to share their laughter.”
In the shared-laughter model,a human initially laughs and the AI system responds with laughter as an empathetic response. This approach required designing three subsystems — one to detect laughter, a second to decide whether to laugh, and a third to choose the type of appropriate laughter. The type of laughter is also important, because in some cases a polite chuckle may be more appropriate than a loud snort of laughter.
The team tested Erica’s new sense of humor by creating four different short dialogues between a person and Erica with her new shared-laughter system. Then they asked more than 130 people in total to listen to each dialogue within the three different conditions — shared-laughter system, no laughter, all laughter — and evaluated the interactions based on human-likeness, naturalness and understanding. The shared-laughter system performed better than either baseline.
“Robots should actually have a distinct character, and we think that they can show this through their conversational behaviors, such as laughing, eye gaze, gestures and speaking style,”Inoue added.“We do not think this is an easy problem at all, and it may well take more than 10 to 20 years before we can finally have a casual chat with a robot like we would with a friend.”
9.What’s the purpose of raising the question “What’s so funny?” at the beginning?
A.To show opinions on funny things.
B.To encourage readers to share their ideas.
C.To stress the difficulty of teaching a robot to laugh.
D.To emphasize the importance of being funny.
10.Which of the following explains the underlined phrase “the funny bone” in Paragraph 1?
A.The sense of humor.
B.The shared-laughter system.
C.The speaking style.
D.The distinct character.
11.What is NOT needed in the research of the shared-laughter system?
A.Designing the subsystem to decide whether to laugh.
B.Assessing the interactions based on emotions.
C.Creating brief conversations between a human and Erica.
D.Asking people to listen to the previously created dialogues.
12.What is Inoue’s attitude towards conversational AI?
A.Indifferent. B.Suspicious.
C.Optimistic. D.Objective.

I recently received a statement regarding a credit card I never use.I opened the statement and noticed a charge for $1,175 incurred (引致) by me in Moose Jaw for something like the Antler Motel. As I have never had the pleasure of visiting Saskatchewan,Canada, I called the bank to report it.
The recording from the fraud (欺诈) department told me, “We are experiencing more calls than usual. Please stay on the line ...” What then followed was about an hour of repetitive music.
I decided to call again from my mobile phone and chose the “lost or stolen card” department, while keeping my place for the fraud department open on my landline (座机).After half an hour, I got through to a customer service clerk called Marlene. She told me she had to ask me some verifying (验证性的) questions. My date of birth.I passed.Next, she asked how many accounts I had in this bank.I guessed one and passed. Then came the kicker,“When did you last use it?” I said,“Ages ago.” She replied,“The system does not accept this answer. You are locked out.”
I continued to wait on my other line for almost three hours until a clerk called John came on.I told him about the charge, and he asked whether anybody else had access to my credit card.I told him not to my knowledge. In addition to never having set foot in Saskatchewan, I was not even sure how to spell it.After a brief post-midnight chat, he noted the charge would be removed.
Two days later,I received a survey asking me how I enjoyed this telephone experience, whether I was okay with a bank clerk getting in touch with me and whether I would recommend this bank to my friends. I answered of course.I was just dying to say to them,“Your call is important to me.Here’s some music you can listen to while I cycle around my neighbourhood.”
13.What happened to the author recently?
A.He lost something on a flight to Moose Jaw.
B.He was informed of an unrecognized charge.

4 Surprising Ways Algae (藻类) Are Driving Innovation
Algae can be a double-edged sword (双刃剑).Increased human activity and climate change have caused explosions of algae populations in water bodies around the world — sometimes choking entire ecosystems of sunlight and oxygen.Even though they are so closely associated with humanity’s negative impact on Earth, algae could also play key roles in helping fight pollution, viruses, and more. 17
  Filtering water.
With microplastic pollution documented in almost all water bodies,a recent study shows that through adsorption (吸附作用),algae can help filter microplastics out of water. 18
  Fueling air travel.
19 Researchers at a German algae cultivation facility are already using it to fuel drones. They believe this and other sustainable fuels could reduce carbon emissions from airplanes by up to 80 per cent.
  Fighting viruses.
Red algae can prevent the replication (复制) of some viruses, according to a 2020 study. 20 Thus, it could become a powerful medication to treat HIV,the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
   21
In 2019, freshwater algae were launched into space to turn the carbon dioxide exhaled (呼出) by astronauts on the International Space Station into oxygen.Since algae are also high in protein, they could replace up to 30 per cent of astronaut food in the future.
A.Making space food more nutritious.
B.Making long-term space travel possible.
C.These are several ways algae are solving modern problems.
D.Some algae can also filter chemicals that can be used in fertilizers.
E.Brown algae have been shown to stimulate the body’s immune system.
F.Algae can produce more effective biofuels than traditional sources like soybeans.
G.It aims to harvest algae for energy while keeping the environment pollution-free.

If I Had a Time Machine
If I had a time machine, I would go back to the time when I was a little child. Now I’m on my first trip to the past to meet my grandfather who left me many years ago.
In an instant, I am standing in front of my grandparents’ house. Taking a look at the yard, I see my 5-year-old self sitting on my grandfather’s lap and my grandfather reading a story to me. I, with tears rolling down my face, cannot help staring at them for a very long time.
Thanks to the time machine, I have a chance to relive the good old days.
