Life is full of ups and downs. However, it’s not what happens to us in life but how we respond to each situation that matters.
I remember a major setback of my own. Two years after I had become the starting quarterback (四分卫) in college, I seriously injured my knee, had an operation, fell behind, and then lost my position. Our coach called me into his office just before the season began and told me they were handing the starting job to someone else.
I felt sick. I’d worked my whole life to get to this position. It was my senior year. This wasn’t supposed to happen.
As a backup, I had a choice to make. I could complain bad-mouth the new guy, and feel sorry for myself.Or ...I could make the most of the situation.
Luckily, I decided to deal with it. I was no longer throwing touchdowns, but I could help in other ways. So I swallowed my pride and kept supporting the team, working hard and preparing for each game as if I were the starter. I chose to keep my chin up.
Was it easy? Not at all. I often felt like a failure. Sitting out every game after being the starter was a shame. Keeping a good attitude was a constant struggle.
Was it the right choice, though? Definitely. I wore out my bum (屁股) on the bench all year but I contributed to the team in other ways by supporting the new guy and helping to prepare our defense each week for the opposing team’s offense. Most importantly, I took responsibility for my attitude. I cannot begin to tell you what a positive difference this important decision made in my life.

Climbing Everest has been a dream for many people ever since Edmund Hillary and his guide, Tenzing Norgay, reached the top of the mountain in 1953.
At one time, only experienced mountaineers tried to climb Everest. But the cost of such an effort has decreased. This has led more and more inexperienced climbers to try to reach the top of Everest.Nepal only requires that climbers have a note from a medical doctor saying they are physically fit.Climbers do not have to prove they have the strength or ability to perform at extreme heights.
The climbing industry brings in $300 million each year for Nepal. This year, the government of Nepal issued Everest permits to 381 people, the highest number ever.Anyone can get a permit for an $11,000 fee.
The number of climbers who have died this season is the highest since 2015.Most of those who died are believed to have suffered from altitude sickness. The condition is caused by low amounts of oxygen in extremely high places. It can lead to severe headaches, stomach sickness, shortness of breath and mental confusion.Because of the altitude, climbers have just hours to reach the top before they are at risk of having their lungs fill with liquid.
Among those who have died at Everest this year is American Christopher Kulish. He was from the state of Colorado.Kulish died on his way down, shortly after reaching the top.Just before he died, Kulish made it into the so-called “Seven Summit Club” of mountaineers who have reached the highest peaks on every continent, his brother said.
Mirza Ali is a Pakistani mountaineer and tour operator who reached Everest’s peak for the first time this month. It was his fourth time trying. He said,“Everybody wants to stand on top of the world.” But he said visitors who are unprepared for the extremes of Everest harm the mountaineering industry.
Ali added,“The more people come, the more permits, more business. But on the other side of it is a lot of risk because it is costing lives.”
5.What made many people climb Everest according to the author?( )

(2024·昆明高二下学期质检)For nearly a decade, I’ve interviewed scores of high achievers, from astronauts to Olympic gold medalists to Nobel Prize winners. What was revealing is that all high achievers had four things in common.
Tap into your intrinsic (内在的) motivation.
9.( ) Getting to the “why” behind your career choice is critical, as it will help you get in touch with your deepest motivations, block out distractions, and potentially adjust with your current path. For the highest achievers, it’s not about the medals, rewards, or promotions. They all told me that they loved what they do, could not imagine another path, and would do it for free if they could.
Get comfortable with failure.
Some people fear failing, while others fear succeeding. 10.( ) For them, it’s not a question of if they can overcome a challenge; the focus is always on how they can. They consider alternative strategies and work fiercely to control what they can control, and ignore distractions.
Reinforce your foundation.
Despite all of their achievements, high achievers never rest on their honours. Even if they’ve done a task or routine countless times, they still work on the basic skills foundational to their current — and future — success. 11.( ) It’s also the strategy marathon runners use when they train in high altitudes so that running the race in normal conditions feels easier.
12.( )
The high achievers I spoke with are continuously open to learning, although it is rarely in the classroom. Many of the Nobel Prize winners I spoke to were also inspired as a result of their openness and curiosity. Several shared that their breakthrough ideas occurred through casual conversations with colleagues in cafeterias and laundry rooms. Conference lectures, coffee breaks and group meals are not just for building your network. 13.( )
A.Become a lifelong learner.
B.Be the best whatever you do.
C.It’s where new ideas take root and develop.
D.Why did you enter your chosen profession?
E.High achievers fear “not trying” more than they fear failing.
F.In the military, people are similarly told to “train hard, fight easy”.
G.What should we do to realise our dreams and live a life without regret?

A SUCCESSFUL FAILURE
Perce Blackborow joined an expedition① with Sir Ernest Shackleton to Antarctica on the ship Endurance② in 1914.Shackleton was one of the most famous explorers of his day③ and [1]it was considered a great honour to be part of his expeditions.Below are some of Blackborow’s diary entries④.
[1]to be part of his expeditions 是动词不定式短语作真正的主语,it 作形式主语。
31 Oct 1914
...Well, [2]it so happened that one morning I bought a newspaper and read the advertisement about the Antarctic expedition.
[2]it so happened that ...
An expedition to the South Pole with the great Sir Ernest Shackleton — this is the adventure [3]that I have been dreaming of.And I was ready for it.At the age of 19, I am fit and full of vigour⑤.However, when I applied to join⑥ the expedition, Shackleton turned me down⑦ [4]because he thought I was too young and wasn’t qualified⑧. But I was so enthusiastic⑨about the idea of going along with⑩ them [5]that I secretly went aboard his ship, the Endurance, and hid in a small cupboard . Unfortunately , three days after we set off I was discovered.Shackleton did not want to turn back so he offered me a job, but only after he promised me,“If anyone has to be eaten, then you will be the first!” He assigned me to be a steward , and I now serve meals for twenty-eight men, three times a day.
[6]How everyone will envy me when I come back and tell them about the amazing places I have been to!
[3]that 引导定语从句,修饰先行词adventure;从句中have been dreaming 是现在完成进行时。
I was too young and wasn’t qualified 是省略了引导词that 的宾语从句。
[6]该句是How引导的感叹句,其中when引导时间状语从句;I have been to是省略了关系代词that或which的定语从句,修饰先行词places。
21 Nov 1915
The journey has not been easy.Endurance became stuck in the ice [7]as we approached Antarctica. The ice froze around us and we were well and truly stuck! We saw the ship get crushed by the ice.And [8]when the ship sank , our hearts sank with it.
Before we abandoned the ship, Shackleton calmly called us together and told us to rescue our most essential supplies — the small boats, our food, the cook stove , candles, clothes, and blankets .This was no time to panic .We were not allowed to take most of our personal belongings , and Shackleton himself threw away all his gold. But to our surprise, he allowed Hussey to keep his banjo .Hussey often plays it to keep our spirits up .
We are now camped on the ice and we have been managing to survive, but [9]spring is coming, and the ice will soon begin to melt.
20 May 1916
We have been struggling for days, but things on Elephant Island are going from bad to worse .We are now crowded together under one of our boats on the rocky shore of this miserable place.Soon after we arrived, Shackleton left us to find help on South Georgia Island, 1,320 kilometres away —[10] the voyage was too dangerous and difficult for all of us to make it in our small boats.[11] If Shackleton fails, will we have any hope of rescue? No.No navy in the world ever stops at Elephant Island, and no one else knows [12]that we are here.
[10]句中含有too ... to ...
I feel low .It’s cold and windy. The island has no plants.Sometimes we are able to catch a seal or a penguin to eat.Otherwise, there is no food.I try to think of happier things: decent food, warm and dry clothes, a cosy bedroom, sunny days, and my mother’s face ...However, these happy memories are soon interrupted by a sudden cold rush of air.
I shouted,“Shut the door!”
“Hold on now, Perce.Don’t you go turning into another Tom,” came the reply.“We’ve caught another penguin, so it’s penguin soup tonight!”
Bless Frank Wild, the kindest man there is after our leader, Ernest Shackleton. How could I become as selfish and bad-tempered as Thomas Orde-Lees!
[13]Without Frank and Ernest, we’d all be dead by now. Their genuine concern for others, their perseverance , and their resolve fill me with hope.
Perhaps there is a chance we will return home, after all.

A
Life is full of ups and downs.
However, it’s not what happens to us in life but how we respond to each
situation that matters.
I remember a major setback of my own. Two years after I had become
the starting quarterback (四分卫) in college, I seriously injured my
knee, had an operation, fell behind, and then lost my position. Our
coach called me into his office just before the season began and told me
they were handing the starting job to someone else.
I felt sick. I’d worked my whole life to get to this position. It was
my senior year. This wasn’t supposed to happen.
As a backup, I had a choice to make. I could complain bad-mouth
the new guy, and feel sorry for myself. Or ...I could make the most of
the situation.
Luckily, I decided to deal with it. I was no longer throwing
touchdowns, but I could help in other ways. So I swallowed my pride
and kept supporting the team, working hard and preparing for each game
as if I were the starter. I chose to keep my chin up.
Was it easy? Not at all. I often felt like a failure. Sitting out every
game after being the starter was a shame. Keeping a good attitude was a
constant struggle.
Was it the right choice, though? Definitely. I wore out my bum
(屁股) on the bench all year but I contributed to the team in other ways
by supporting the new guy and helping to prepare our defense each week
for the opposing team’s offense. Most importantly, I took responsibility
for my attitude. I cannot begin to tell you what a positive difference this
important decision made in my life.

Climbing Everest has been a dream
for many people ever since Edmund Hillary and his guide, Tenzing
Norgay, reached the top of the mountain in 1953.
At one time, only experienced mountaineers tried to climb
Everest. But the cost of such an effort has decreased. This has led more and
more inexperienced climbers to try to reach the top of Everest.Nepal only
requires that climbers have a note from a medical doctor saying they are
physically fit.Climbers do not have to prove they have the strength or
ability to perform at extreme heights.
The climbing industry brings in $300 million each year for
Nepal. This year, the government of Nepal issued Everest permits to 381
people, the highest number ever.Anyone can get a permit for an $11,
000 fee.
The number of climbers who have died this season is the highest since
2015.Most of those who died are believed to have suffered from altitude
sickness. The condition is caused by low amounts of oxygen in extremely
high places. It can lead to severe headaches, stomach sickness,
shortness of breath and mental confusion.Because of the altitude,
climbers have just hours to reach the top before they are at risk of having
their lungs fill with liquid.
Among those who have died at Everest this year is American
Christopher Kulish. He was from the state of Colorado.Kulish died on his
way down, shortly after reaching the top.Just before he died, Kulish
made it into the so-called “Seven Summit Club” of mountaineers who
have reached the highest peaks on every continent, his brother said.
Mirza Ali is a Pakistani mountaineer and tour operator who reached
Everest’s peak for the first time this month. It was his fourth time
trying. He said,“Everybody wants to stand on top of the world.” But
he said visitors who are unprepared for the extremes of Everest harm the
mountaineering industry.
Ali added,“The more people come, the more permits, more
business. But on the other side of it is a lot of risk because it is costing
lives.”

For nearly a decade, I’ve
interviewed scores of high achievers, from astronauts to Olympic gold
medalists to Nobel Prize winners. What was revealing is that all high
achievers had four things in common.
Tap into your intrinsic (内在的) motivation.
9. ( ) Getting to the “why” behind your career choice is
critical, as it will help you get in touch with your deepest motivations,
block out distractions, and potentially adjust with your current path. For
the highest achievers, it’s not about the medals, rewards, or
promotions. They all told me that they loved what they do, could not
imagine another path, and would do it for free if they could.
Get comfortable with failure.
Some people fear failing, while others fear succeeding. 10.
( ) For them, it’s not a question of if they can overcome a
challenge; the focus is always on how they can. They consider
alternative strategies and work fiercely to control what they can control,
and ignore distractions.
Reinforce your foundation.
Despite all of their achievements, high achievers never rest on their
honours. Even if they’ve done a task or routine countless times, they
still work on the basic skills foundational to their current — and future —
success. 11.( ) It’s also the strategy marathon runners use when
they train in high altitudes so that running the race in normal conditions
feels easier.
12. ( )
The high achievers I spoke with are continuously open to learning,
although it is rarely in the classroom. Many of the Nobel Prize winners I
spoke to were also inspired as a result of their openness and curiosity.
Several shared that their breakthrough ideas occurred through casual
conversations with colleagues in cafeterias and laundry rooms. Conference
lectures, coffee breaks and group meals are not just for building your
network. 13.( )
A. Become a lifelong learner.
B. Be the best whatever you do.
C. It’s where new ideas take root and develop.
D. Why did you enter your chosen profession?
E. High achievers fear “not trying” more than they fear failing.
F. In the military, people are similarly told to “train hard, fight
easy”.
G. What should we do to realise our dreams and live a life without
regret?
