A
(2024·南京高二下学期质检)A famous theory suggests that practising any skill for 10,000 hours is enough to make you an expert. No innate (天生的) talent? Not a problem. You just practice. But is it true?
One man who decided to test it is Dan McLaughlin, 34, a former commercial photographer from Portland, Oregon.
“The idea came in 2009. I was visiting my brother and we decided to play golf,” he says. “I had never really been on a golf course and went out and shot a 57, which is horrible.”
Far from being discouraged by his obvious lack of any natural talent for golf, Dan and his brother started talking about what it would take to become a professional golfer. Dan soon decided he wanted to try.
“When I announced I was going to quit my job, my co-workers started bringing books in and I read Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, Geoff Colvin’s Talent is Overrated and The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle,” he says. “These books all had this idea of 10,000 hours in them.”
The 10,000-hour concept can be traced back to a 1993 paper written by Anders Ericsson, a professor at the University of Colorado. It is Malcolm Gladwell’s hugely popular book, Outliers, that is largely responsible for introducing “the 10,000-hour rule” to a mass audience.
It highlighted the work of a group of psychologists in Berlin, who had studied the practice habits of violin students in childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
All had begun playing at about five years of age with similar practice times. However, at age eight, practice times began to diverge (不同). By age 20, the elite performers had averaged more than 10,000 hours of practice each, while the less able performers had only done 4,000 hours of practice.
The psychologists didn’t see any naturally gifted performers appear and this surprised them. If natural talent had played a role it wouldn’t have been unreasonable to expect gifted performers to appear after, say, 5,000 hours.
Anders Ericsson concluded that “many characteristics once believed to reflect innate talent are actually the result of intense practice extended for a minimum of 10 years”.

A.That the elite performers practiced so many hours.
B.That practice times vary greatly from person to person.
C.That the less able performers didn’t practice long enough.
D.That no gifted performers appeared within a shorter period.
4.By introducing the Berlin psychologists’ study, Anders Ericsson stressed .( )

David Brown is known as the world’s fastest completely blind runner. He was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease at 15 months old, which led him to completely lose his sight by age 13.
Brown says he was “living in fear for a number of years” — until he discovered his passion for running. After winning an essay contest, he attended the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008.It was at that time that he knew he wanted to compete himself.
Paralympic runners train and compete alongside sighted guides. At the Rio Games in 2016, Brown and his partner Jerome Avery ran 10.99 in the men’s 100-meter dash to take home the gold.
Brown made his way to running from another sport. He explains that he lost his left eye when he was 3, and lost vision in his right eye over time.He played basketball as a kid, but was increasingly getting injured because he couldn’t see the ball coming.“I took the opportunity to run on the playground, and realised I had some speed there,” he says.
He pursued his passion at the Missouri School for the Blind.Brown started at the school when he was 11, and it was there that he really started running track.
He got to his first Paralympic games by writing about running.Brown was one of the 25 winners of an essay contest that got to attend the event in Beijing. He says he wrote about how he used sports to overcome obstacles, noting that as he grew up he struggled with depression.
It’s crucial to be in sync with your running partner. His new partner Steward says he doesn’t have to slow down when running with Brown, because he’s fast.A 10-or 11-second race doesn’t require much speaking, Steward says, beyond the occasional cues.
It’s also an honour, Brown says.He notes that Paralympic runners can’t do what they do without guides like Steward, who could theoretically run solo but choose not to.He calls it “a great honour”.

(2024·泰安高二下学期期末)This past Christmas season began for me as usual on the day after Thanksgiving. My mom, sister, and I had gotten up early to go shopping. As we were driving out of a store parking lot, we caught sight of a dreadfully thin woman sitting on a walker. She was clearly homeless.
That homeless woman got us thinking about what Christmas would be like for someone who has no place to call home. With no family to turn to and certainly no presents to open on Christmas morning, these people have nothing to look forward to but the cold and lonely place where they choose to camp.Even though we live in sunny California, the temperature can still fall below freezing on winter nights.Where would this woman sleep when the sun went down?
Sadly, homeless people are a common sight in our town.On our way home, we passed countless people pushing shopping carts overflowing with their belongings and people standing by the road holding cardboard signs with “Just Hungry” written on them.
The next day, my mom had a great idea. While we were out Christmas shopping, we purchased some blue boxes of sugar cookies and a few boxes of candy canes. When we got home, I helped my mom carefully tie each box with a red ribbon and tape a candy cane on top.Next, we wrote “Call 211 for Help” on notes and taped them to the bottoms of the boxes.“Not only will we be spreading Christmas cheer, but now the homeless people will have a number to call that can get them the help they need,” my mom explained as we worked.
We put all the boxes in the car and, whenever we went for a drive, we searched the streets for individuals down on their luck.Usually, the streets are crowded with people carrying sleeping bags, but somehow when you are looking for something, it always seems to disappear.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Eventually, we found a young man sleeping in the Lowe’s parking lot.

The day before Christmas, we were driving around with our final box when we saw the same woman we met before.

How to Deal with Adversities
The course of life never runs smoothly and the road to success is paved with adversities. In my eyes, adversities are what make us grow up and become mature. As the saying goes,“What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.”
Then how should we deal with adversities? First of all, we must think positively. That is to say, we need to regard each problem as an opportunity to learn, and each setback as a stepping stone to success. In addition, we ought to keep trying and never give up.Success consists of going from failure to failure without losing our passion.
Ⅳ.
Eventually, we found a young man sleeping in the Lowe’s parking lot.He was lying on the ground with only a thin carpet. My mom quickly got out of the car and placed a box beside him.Hopefully, when he woke, he would find the box and used a phone to call the helpline. Then we continued to hand out the boxes to spread a bit of holiday spirit to those who clearly had none.
The day before Christmas, we were driving around with our final box when we saw the same woman we met before. She was still wearing the dirty yellow raincoat and the bird feathers still got stuck into her gray hair.My mom and I walked up to her with the last box.She gratefully took the box and whispered “Thank you, ma’am” as my mom handed her the cookies. My mom and I were glad that we were able to possibly send a ray of hope to those homeless people. After all, the joy of giving is what the spirit of Christmas is all about.

THE REWARD FOR PERSEVERANCE We watched as Shackleton and the boat sailed away from Elephant Island. It was easy to imagine the danger ahead of them.Would they ever return to find us? What might happen to them? What if they were delayed? We felt so alone and desperate. But it was not for long. There was nothing like a good dinner and some music to cheer us up. Life fell into a regular pattern.Staying alive took all our time and energy. For example, we needed water, and Elephant Island had none.We found that we could melt ice from the ocean and drink the water from it.But how could we make fire? There were no trees growing on Antarctica and no oil, so the only fuel we could use was animal fat.[1]This gave off oily, black smoke, but it stayed burning even in strong winds. Food was also a problem, as we did not find any vegetables or fruit on the island. One of our group members, Lionel Greenstreet, noted in his diary about how bored he was with the meals:“The food now is pretty well all meat of sea creatures.” If it weren’t for sea animals, we would all starve.[2]As a chef, it was my duty to cook, so I tried to vary the meals in whatever way I could. But it was difficult. 高级词组和短语: 第一至三段:sail away、 ahead of、 for long、 cheer up、 a regular pattern、 stay alive、 give off、 in strong winds、 on the island、 sea creatures、 vary the meals。 第四至六段:go outside、 become ill、 team spirit、 keep sb optimistic、 deal with、 in a positive and successful way、 hide our tears、 pay ...back、 a slow but painful death。 2. It was easy to ...;What if ...?There was nothing like ...; ...how bored he was with the meals ...(感叹句);If it weren’t for ...,we would ...(虚拟语气); ...the animal fat (which/that) we burnt for our fires (定语从句); ...even the times when we caught a sea animal (定语从句);When we were finally rescued, ...(状语从句)。

We had to be careful not to go outside too often, as the changing temperatures could make us ill.It was almost as dangerous to become too hot from wearing too many clothes as to become too cold from wearing too few.The sweat could freeze very quickly. Many of us also became ill from the black smoke of the animal fat we burnt for our fires. It damaged our eyes and burnt our lungs. The twenty-two of us lived like this in the cold for four months. Our discipline and team spirit kept us optimistic and helped us deal with our fears in a positive and successful way.We also celebrated our birthdays, festivals, and even the times when we caught a sea animal. This was an episode in my life that I would never forget. [3]When we were finally rescued, we felt such relief and joy that many of us could not hide our tears. We were at last free to go home to warm beds, good food, and the care of our family and friends. Our optimism and faith in Shackleton had helped us persevere in staying alive. And he paid us back by his commitment to save us from a slow but painful death. [3]When引导时间状语从句,such ...that ...

Step 1
THE REWARD FOR PERSEVERANCE
We watched as Shackleton and the boat sailed away from Elephant
Island. It was easy to imagine the danger ahead of them.Would they ever
return to find us? What might happen to them? What if they were
delayed? We felt so alone and desperate. But it was not for long. There
was nothing like a good dinner and some music to cheer us up.
Life fell into a regular pattern.Staying alive took all our time and
energy. For example, we needed water, and Elephant Island had
none.We found that we could melt ice from the ocean and drink the water
from it.But how could we make fire? There were no trees growing on
Antarctica and no oil, so the only fuel we could use was animal
fat.[1]This gave off oily, black smoke, but it stayed burning even in
strong winds.
Food was also a problem, as we did not find any vegetables or fruit
on the island. One of our group members, Lionel Greenstreet, noted in
his diary about how bored he was with the meals:“The food now is
pretty well all meat of sea creatures.” If it weren’t for sea animals, we
would all starve.[2]As a chef, it was my duty to cook, so I tried to
vary the meals in whatever way I could. But it was difficult.
We had to be careful not to go outside too often, as the changing
temperatures could make us ill.It was almost as dangerous to become too
hot from wearing too many clothes as to become too cold from wearing too
few.The sweat could freeze very quickly. Many of us also became ill from
the black smoke of the animal fat we burnt for our fires. It damaged our
eyes and burnt our lungs.
The twenty-two of us lived like this in the cold for four months. Our
discipline and team spirit kept us optimistic and helped us deal with our
fears in a positive and successful way.We also celebrated our birthdays,
festivals, and even the times when we caught a sea animal. This was an
episode in my life that I would never forget.
[3]When we were finally rescued, we felt such relief and joy that
many of us could not hide our tears. We were at last free to go home to
warm beds, good food, and the care of our family and friends. Our
optimism and faith in Shackleton had helped us persevere in staying
alive. And he paid us back by his commitment to save us from a slow but
painful death.
[3]When引导时间状语从句,such ...that ...

A
A famous theory suggests that
practising any skill for 10,000 hours is enough to make you an expert.
No innate (天生的) talent? Not a problem. You just practice. But is it
true?
One man who decided to test it is Dan McLaughlin, 34, a former
commercial photographer from Portland, Oregon.
“The idea came in 2009. I was visiting my brother and we decided
to play golf,” he says. “I had never really been on a golf course and
went out and shot a 57, which is horrible.”
Far from being discouraged by his obvious lack of any natural talent
for golf, Dan and his brother started talking about what it would take to
become a professional golfer. Dan soon decided he wanted to try.
“When I announced I was going to quit my job, my co-workers
started bringing books in and I read Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers,
Geoff Colvin’s Talent is Overrated and The Talent Code by Daniel
Coyle,” he says. “These books all had this idea of 10,000 hours in
them.”
The 10,000-hour concept can be traced back to a 1993 paper written
by Anders Ericsson, a professor at the University of Colorado. It is
Malcolm Gladwell’s hugely popular book, Outliers, that is largely
responsible for introducing “the 10,000-hour rule” to a mass audience.
It highlighted the work of a group of psychologists in Berlin, who
had studied the practice habits of violin students in childhood,
adolescence and adulthood.
All had begun playing at about five years of age with similar practice
times. However, at age eight, practice times began to diverge (不
同). By age 20, the elite performers had averaged more than 10,000
hours of practice each, while the less able performers had only done 4,
000 hours of practice.
The psychologists didn’t see any naturally gifted performers appear
and this surprised them. If natural talent had played a role it wouldn’t
have been unreasonable to expect gifted performers to appear after, say,
5,000 hours.
Anders Ericsson concluded that “many characteristics once believed
to reflect innate talent are actually the result of intense practice extended
for a minimum of 10 years”.

David Brown is known as the world’s fastest completely blind
runner. He was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease at 15 months old,
which led him to completely lose his sight by age 13.
Brown says he was “living in fear for a number of years” — until
he discovered his passion for running. After winning an essay contest, he
attended the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008.It was at that time that he
knew he wanted to compete himself.
Paralympic runners train and compete alongside sighted guides. At the
Rio Games in 2016, Brown and his partner Jerome Avery ran 10.99 in
the men’s 100-meter dash to take home the gold.
Brown made his way to running from another sport. He explains that
he lost his left eye when he was 3, and lost vision in his right eye over
time.He played basketball as a kid, but was increasingly getting injured
because he couldn’t see the ball coming.“I took the opportunity to run
on the playground, and realised I had some speed there,” he says.
He pursued his passion at the Missouri School for the Blind.Brown
started at the school when he was 11, and it was there that he really
started running track.
He got to his first Paralympic games by writing about running.Brown
was one of the 25 winners of an essay contest that got to attend the event in
Beijing. He says he wrote about how he used sports to overcome
obstacles, noting that as he grew up he struggled with depression.
It’s crucial to be in sync with your running partner. His new partner
Steward says he doesn’t have to slow down when running with Brown,
because he’s fast.A 10-or 11-second race doesn’t require much
speaking, Steward says, beyond the occasional cues.
It’s also an honour, Brown says.He notes that Paralympic runners
can’t do what they do without guides like Steward, who could
theoretically run solo but choose not to.He calls it “a great honour”.

How to Deal with Adversities
The course of life never runs smoothly and the road to success is
paved with adversities. In my eyes, adversities are what make us grow up
and become mature. As the saying goes,“What doesn’t kill us makes
us stronger.”
Then how should we deal with adversities? First of all, we must
think positively. That is to say, we need to regard each problem as an
opportunity to learn, and each setback as a stepping stone to success. In
addition, we ought to keep trying and never give up.Success consists of
going from failure to failure without losing our passion.
This past Christmas season began for
me as usual on the day after Thanksgiving. My mom, sister, and I had
gotten up early to go shopping. As we were driving out of a store parking
lot, we caught sight of a dreadfully thin woman sitting on a walker. She
was clearly homeless.
That homeless woman got us thinking about what Christmas would be
like for someone who has no place to call home. With no family to turn to
and certainly no presents to open on Christmas morning, these people
have nothing to look forward to but the cold and lonely place where they
choose to camp.Even though we live in sunny California, the
temperature can still fall below freezing on winter nights.Where would this
woman sleep when the sun went down?
Sadly, homeless people are a common sight in our town.On our way
home, we passed countless people pushing shopping carts overflowing
with their belongings and people standing by the road holding cardboard
signs with “Just Hungry” written on them.
The next day, my mom had a great idea. While we were out
Christmas shopping, we purchased some blue boxes of sugar cookies and
a few boxes of candy canes. When we got home, I helped my mom
carefully tie each box with a red ribbon and tape a candy cane on
top.Next, we wrote “Call 211 for Help” on notes and taped them to
the bottoms of the boxes.“Not only will we be spreading Christmas
cheer, but now the homeless people will have a number to call that can
get them the help they need,” my mom explained as we worked.
We put all the boxes in the car and, whenever we went for a drive,
we searched the streets for individuals down on their luck.Usually, the
streets are crowded with people carrying sleeping bags, but somehow
when you are looking for something, it always seems to disappear.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Eventually, we found a young man sleeping in the Lowe’s
parking lot.

The day before Christmas, we were driving around with our final
box when we saw the same woman we met before.

Eventually, we found a young man sleeping in the Lowe’s parking
lot.He was lying on the ground with only a thin carpet. My mom quickly
got out of the car and placed a box beside him.Hopefully, when he
woke, he would find the box and used a phone to call the helpline. Then
we continued to hand out the boxes to spread a bit of holiday spirit to those
who clearly had none.
The day before Christmas, we were driving around with our final
box when we saw the same woman we met before. She was still wearing
the dirty yellow raincoat and the bird feathers still got stuck into her gray
hair.My mom and I walked up to her with the last box.She gratefully took
the box and whispered “Thank you, ma’am” as my mom handed her
the cookies. My mom and I were glad that we were able to possibly send a
ray of hope to those homeless people. After all, the joy of giving is what
the spirit of Christmas is all about.
