A
When the first modern Olympics kicked off in Athens in 1896, it wasn’t clear whether they’d last. However, it continued in 1900 and 1904, but not as a main attraction. Some of the Olympic events might seem a bit unusual to today’s sports fans.
Chariot(战车) Racing
Starting around 684 BC, drivers raced each other in horse-drawn chariots at the Olympics, sometimes crashing into one another. Only men could join in Olympic events as athletes, but wealthy women could show their support for chariots as sponsors. Because it was a chariot’s funder who received the victory title, not the racer himself, this was the only way women could “win” at the Olympics.
Hot Air Balloon Racing
With the expanded time, the 1900 Olympics featured many more athletes and events than the 1896 Olympics, including various hot air balloon competitions. Hot air balloon drivers competed in terms of distance traveled, altitude reached and best photograph taken from a balloon. However, hot air balloon racing made its appearance for the first time and also the last time in 1900.
Live Pigeon(鸽子) Shooting
Another event that appeared first at the 1900 Olympics was live pigeon shooting. In this competition, organizers set free pigeons into the air in front of a competitor, who then shot as many as possible. The winner was a Belgian man named Lcon de Lun, who shot 21 pigeons. Altogether, the competitors killed around 300 pigeons. Luckily, live pigeon shooting only appeared at the Olympics once.
Painting
Starting with the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm and continuing until the 1948 games in London, the Olympics held art competitions in painting as well as sculpture, music, architecture and literature. The art competitions were called off because so many competitors were professional artists, and the Olympics were supposed to make the amateurs (people who didn’t get paid for their athletic or artistic talent) shine.
21.How could a woman be involved in Chariot Racing
A.By training a chariot driver. B.By funding a chariot.
C.By competing in the race. D.By signing up as a volunteer.
22.What do Hot Air Balloon Racing and Live Pigeon Shooting have in common
A.They involved the use of animals as a necessary part.
B.They were warmly welcomed by the audience.
C.They required excellent skills in photography.
D.They only existed once in history as Olympic events.
23.Why were the art competitions removed from the Olympic Games
A.The costs of organizing them were too high.
B.The quality of the artistic works was far from satisfactory.
C.The competitors were not what the organizers expected.
D.The organizers believed arts were not as important as sports.

Born in Iris Barrel in 1921, Apfel was brought up in Queens, New York. As a daughter of a successful small business owner, she studied art and art history before working as a copywriter for Women’s Wear Daily.
With her husband Carl, Apfel started a textile and fabric (纺织及织物) reproduction business in 1950. Her firm managed White House repair projects for nine presidents, ranging from Harry Truman to Bill Clinton.
Known for her attractive personality and deep devotion to work, Apfel became a late-in-life fashion influencer(影响者) through her unique style — featuring bushels of bracelets (手镯), piles of necklaces, and those unmistakably large, heavy-framed glasses.
Apfel’s star brightened as she aged. At 90, she was teaching at the University of Texas at Austin. At age 94, she was the main character of a well-reviewed documentary by Albert Maysles. At age 97, she became a professional fashion model, represented by a top agency, IMG. She modeled for Vogue Italia, Kate Spade and MAC, and at the time of her death, she held the record for being the oldest person to have a Barbie doll crafted in her likeness by Mattel. That year, her autobiography (自传), Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon, was published in 2018.
In a 2015 NPR story, Apfel told a reporter Ina Jaffe that she took pride in having inspired people over the years. She remembered meeting one woman who said that Apfel had changed her life.
“She said ‘I learned that if I don’t have to dress like everybody else, I do not have to think like everybody else’,” the designer recalled with joy. “And I thought, boy, if I could do that for a few people, I achieved something.”
“She became an inspiration for so many people,” jewelry designer Alexis Bittar said in a statement. “Through living her life on her own terms, it messaged to women that they don’t need to hide in the shadows as they age; they actually can continue to shine and get better at what they do and look like.”
24.What was once Iris Apfel’s job before becoming a fashion influencer
A.An actress. B.A White House worker.
C.A professional fashion model. D.A copywriter for Women’s Wear Daily.

This week, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an AI tool built to create music. The tool, called MusicLM, is not the first AI music tool to be launched. But the examples Google provided demonstrate musical creative ability based on a limited set of descriptive words.
Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were published online. Some of the created music came from just one- or two-word descriptions, such as “jazz”, “rock” or “techno (高科技舞曲)”. The tool also created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences.
In one example, Google researchers included these instructions to MusicLM, “It is a soundtrack of a game. It is fast-paced and upbeat, with a catchy electric guitar riff (反复乐节). The music is continuous and easy to remember, but with unexpected sounds ...” In the resulting recording, the music seemed to keep very close to the description. The team said the more detailed the description was, the better the system could try to produce it.
The MusicLM model operates similarly to the machine-learning systems used by ChatGPT. ChatGPT and MusicLM both require powerful computers to operate complex machine-learning models. A San Francisco-based
company OpenAI launched ChatGPT late last year. ChatGPT has recently received a lot of attention because of its ability to create complex writings and other content from just a simple description in natural languages. Such tools can produce human-like results because they are trained on huge amounts of data. Many different materials are fed into the systems to permit them to learn complex skills to create realistic works.
However, the MusicLM researchers said there were some risks linked to the new tool. One of the biggest issues the researchers identified was biases (偏好) present in the training data. A bias might include too much of one side and not enough of the other. The researchers said this raised a question about properness for music generation for cultures underrepresented in the training data.
28.What can we learn about MusicLM
A.It is the first AI music tool to be launched.
B.It requires detailed descriptions of full sentences.
C.It creates music based on simple descriptive words.
D.It generates complex writings from a simple description.
29.What is the similarity between ChatGPT and MusicLM
A.They can take the place of musicians. B.They have gained commercial success.
C.They don't have any practical use in life. D.They are based on huge amounts of data.
30.Which of the following is an issue of the MusicLM model
A.Creating music with strong biases. B.Requiring too much training data.
C.Being difficult for some people to use. D.Producing music works with no creativity.
31.What would be the best title for the text
A.The future of humans with AI B.A new AI tool to make music
C.Music created by some AI tools D.AI and its function in culture development

Vast plains of solar panels can help nature more than clean energy: As populations of important pollinators (虫媒) decline, developers have been seeding the grounds of their solar arrays (阵列) with native wildflowers. Now a five-year study published in Environmental Research Letters, confirms that this approach increases the pollinators’ abundance and variety —— with extra benefits for surrounding farms.
From 2018 through 2022, Argonne National Laboratory landscape ecologist Leroy J. Walston and his colleagues regularly visited two such arrays covering hectares (公顷) each in southern Minnesota. The scientists recorded the number and kinds of pollinators the wildflowers attracted and found populations of bees, beetles, butterflies, moths, and more had increased on-site —— even as they continued declining elsewhere in the U. S.
Humans’ pesticide use, greenhouse gas emissions and habitat destruction have caused mass pollinator die-offs. Monarch butterfly numbers, for example, have decreased by 80 percent nationwide in the past two decades, and according to the Center for Biological Diversity’s 2017 report, nearly one in four native bee species is endangered and at increasing risk of dying out. Further big losses would be serious for ecosystems and agriculture: 75 percent of North American plant species rely on pollinators.
The federal government’s energy goals require several million hectares for solar energy, with more than 80 percent of the projects planned for former agricultural land; seeding it this way could help save endangered pollinators.
During their study, Walston and his team watched goldenrod soldier beetles(金菊士兵甲虫) increase rapidly as their namesake flower, goldenrod bloomed around the arrays. As other flowers bloomed,a variety of insects appeared. Native bees saw the most amazing growth, with their population increasing 20 times by the study’s end. Monarch butterflies also increased in number and fluttered their dotted wings across the sites. Twice as many bees visited soybean fields close to the solar sites as fields farther away, making the nearby plots’ gains comparable to those of neighboring land belonging to conservation programs.
The approach’s efficacy in other parts of the country— such as the desert Southwest — remains to be seen. Nevertheless, as Walston says, at least in the Midwest, “if you plant it, yeah, they’ll come.”
32. What does the 5-year study focus on
A. The number of pollinators. B. The influence of solar panels on insects.
C. The effect of wildflower seeding project. D. The exploitation of alternative clean energy.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Native bee species are in danger of dying out.
B. Pollinator populations are decreasing at an alarming rate.
C. Northern American agriculture falls victim to solar panels.
D. The government is taking measures to meet the demands for solar energy.
34. Why does the author mention goldenrod soldier beetles in paragraph 5
A. To highlight the ecological crisis.
B. To illustrate a mutually beneficial relationship.
C. To prove the success of conservation programs.
D. To indicate the outcome the wildflower planting.
35. What does the underlined word “efficacy” in paragraph 6 most probably mean
A. effectiveness. B. limitation. C. response. D. risk.

Engaging with the past
Imagine you’re at home, you start a role-playing game where you can enjoy views of the Nanjing Qinhuai Lantern Festival, completing set tasks along the Qinhuai River. This is one way for video games to enjoy the traditional Chinese culture without having to travel there.
36 Perfect World Games, an online gaming company, recently invited a group of heritage experts including Chen Haitao, a designer from the Dunhuang Academy; and Zhou Xianguang, an inheritor of Longquan sword intangible (非物质的) cultural heritage — to Beijing to discuss new ways to promote traditional Chinese culture.
This year, Zhou was invited to submit designs for swords in its online mobile game Jade Dynasty. They kept the features of swords that were used during the Tang Dynasty but absorbed fairy and knight-themed elements from the game. 37 That enabled players to know another aspect of Chinese heritage. Zhou says, “Since games are welcomed by young people, we can make them familiar with traditional culture as they play. 38 ”
The trend toward combining games with cultural heritage started decades ago. 39 Traditional culture once served merely as a background to the gameplay, and failed to offer a detailed experience. Now the company digs out details and divides them into small sections, and focuses on their unique cultural points, so players can gain a deeper experience.
40 Some overseas players also have a strong interest in Chinese culture, but may find it too difficult to understand. So the company tries to convey the culture in ways they are familiar with to help them better understand.
A.And that’s not all.
B.These games are also available to players overseas.
C.However, these early attempts were described as “vague” (含糊的).
D.Games featuring traditional culture attract more young players.
E.Several decades ago, the practice of sword-making nearly died out.
F.Besides, some figures seen in Dunhuang’s wall paintings were also added to the mobile game.
G.It increases the number of channels available to spread knowledge about our cultural heritage.

As he was nearing his home, he saw a man begging for money. He took out some coins to give the man. “Hey, man. How are you today ” Tom asked.
“Hello, sir. I’m doing all right, I guess,” the man replied, smiling at Tom. “I need to feed my children. This is a huge help. Thank you.” Tom wished him good luck, and went on his way. He felt great about helping out. But he hoped there was more he could do to this poor man, although he himself wasn’t rich at all.
During the following days, Tom tried to give the man some money and bring him food when he passed by him.
Actually, the man, named Adam, begged for money to feed the many homeless dogs he had brought to his home. He had a job at night at a construction site. But the money made there wasn’t enough for him to care for the dogs which he considered as his kids, so he had to beg for money. However, Tom didn’t know about it.
One day, Tom stopped at the newsstand (报摊) on the street. And the owner asked him, “Why do you always give that man money ” Tom explained that man had to feed his family. “But that man doesn’t have a family or any kids,” the owner said, not knowing the truth.
Tom angrily walked away, thinking that man lied to him. He walked to where he knew the man was begging for money and met him. “I know you don’t have children. Stop lying to people. If you need a job, I can help you. This is just wrong,” Tom said angrily. The man stood up and explained, “Sir, I’m not lying at all.” Hearing Adam’s words, Tom said, “Prove it.”

Adam nodded, asking Tom to follow him to his house. Tom agreed. On the way, he was doubtful and still angry. “We’re e in,” Adam said, pointing towards a worn-out house on a empty lot. Getting inside, Tom was surprised to see many dogs. They all gathered around Adam, happily dancing and barking. “I adopted these poor, homeless dogs. I considered them my kids,” Adam said. Then he explained why he had to beg for money.
Feeling sorry, Tom decided to do something to help Adam care for his dogs. Tom said sorry to Adam and petted some dogs that approached him. He sat down with Adam and they talked further. Finally Tom decided to take one dog home so he could care for it. Tom also began encouraging animal shelters and other people to help Adam and his dogs. Many people came with dog food, medicine, etc. At last Adam had a better housing situation, and he continued helping dogs. Tom never judged another person without knowing the whole story ever again.

We will walk about 15 kilometers per day. It should take us about six to seven hours. Each day’s walking will start from one hotel and finish at the next hotel on the route. We’ll walk at a leisurely speed, so this challenge is no problem if you’re a fit and active person. Previous experience is useful, but it’s not absolutely necessary. We will have an experienced leader who’s fully trained and knows the route.
What will you need to take The most important item you’ll need is good walking boots. You should buy them well in advance to make sure they fit well. You’ll need a waterproof jacket to keep you dry and warm and walking shorts are a good idea. You will also need a small backpack to carry your lunch and a water bottle.
