Is it possible that there are basic myths and lies that are ruining your life, holding back your career or justifying an unhappy or unfulfilled life?
The little things we believe or tell ourselves can go a long way towards affecting our success. Here’s what Greg McKeown, author and Young Global Leader at World Economic Forum, had to say.
Why do capable people fail to break through to the next level? It’s a question McKeown began pursuing an answer to when he quit law school 15 years ago.“The answer to the question, to my great surprise, is success,” he wrote in his post 12 Myths That Lead to a Busy, Unfulfilling Life.
“I found that success can be a catalyst (催化剂) for failure,” McKeown wrote. What often happens, he said, is that successful people get disturbed by small things.
He pointed to 12 big myths that can lead to a stressful, unsatisfying career and life.Among them:
“If everyone is doing it, then I need to do it. Let the fear of missing out consume you.Buy into the cultural belief that glorifies being busy and checking social media and email constantly.Don’t pay attention to the quiet voice telling you a different life is possible.Just go with the crowd. The truth:There is a joy in missing out.Discover it.
“I’ll stay up late and get it done.If you ever mention sleep to someone remember to talk about how little you’ve had lately.Boast about getting five hours last night, or about how you pulled an all-nighter earlier this week. It’s okay to be tired and to admit it.But don’t show weakness — or worse, laziness — by suggesting you need a full eight hours. The truth: Sleep is for high performers.”
The lesson is simple.“When organising your life, there are only two choices: The disciplined pursuit of the essential or the undisciplined pursuit of the nonessential,” McKeown wrote.“And that matters because if you don’t control your life, someone else will.”
1.What was Greg McKeown focusing on when he quit law school?( )
A.Why many people give up their dreams.
B.Why capable people can’t achieve success.
C.What is the secret of many people’s success.
D.What keeps capable people from winning greater success.
2.Why can success be a catalyst for failure according to Greg McKeown?( )
A.Successful people will become proud.
B.Success may offer people more challenges.
C.Successful people won’t work hard any more.
D.Success can prevent people from concentrating.
3.What does Greg McKeown advise us to do?( )
A.Go with the crowd. B.Check email regularly.
C.Follow your own course. D.Check social media often.
4.In Paragraph 7, Greg McKeown stressed the importance of .( )

(2024·浙江四校高二下联考)“Think of mental work as doing push-ups,” says Josh Davis, author of Two Awesome Hours.Say you want to do 10,000.The most “efficient” way would be to do them all at once without a break. We know, though, that that is impossible.Instead, if we did just a few at a time, between other activities and stretched (延伸) out over weeks, hitting 10,000 would become far more feasible.
“The brain is very much like a muscle in this respect,” Davis writes.“Set up the wrong conditions through constant work and we can accomplish little.Set up the right conditions and there is probably little we can’t do.”
Many of us, though, tend to think of our brains not as muscles, but as a computer: a machine capable of constant work. Not only is that untrue, but pushing ourselves to work for hours without a break can be harmful, some experts say.
“The idea that you can unlimitedly stretch out your deep focus and productivity time is really wrong,” says research scientist Andrew Smart, author of Autopilot.“If you’re constantly doing this, where your physiology is saying ‘I need a break’ but you keep pushing yourself, you get this low-level stress response — and, over time, extraordinarily dangerous.”
One analysis found that long working hours increased the risk of heart disease by 40% — almost as much as smoking (50%).Another found that people who worked long hours had a much higher risk of stroke, while people who worked more than 11 hours a day were almost 2.5 times more likely to suffer from depression than those who worked seven to eight. In Japan, this has led to the disturbing trend of karoshi, or death by overwork.
If you’re wondering if this means that you might want to consider taking that long-delayed holiday, the answer may be yes.One study of businessmen in Helsinki found that over 26 years, executives and businessmen who took fewer holidays in midlife predicted both earlier deaths and worse health in old age.
5.What does the underlined word “feasible” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?( )
A.Being effective. B.Being impossible.
C.That can be done. D.That can be refused.
6.What do Josh Davis and Andrew Smart have in common?( )
A.They like doing push-ups. B.They support short breaks.
C.They advocate working hard. D.They compare our brains to computers.
7.What did the two analyses in Paragraph 5 indicate?( )
A.The risks of some diseases. B.The reasons for poor health.
C.The benefits of taking a holiday. D.The harm of working long hours.
8.What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?( )
A.To make a prediction. B.To offer a suggestion.
C.To present an analysis. D.To give an introduction.

(2024·石家庄高二下质检)Every minute, every single day, about a truckload of plastic enters our oceans.Since the 1950s, some 8.3 billion tons of plastic have been produced worldwide, and to date, only 9% of that has been recycled.
We buy a bottle of water, drink it for a few minutes, and toss its permanent packaging “away”.We eat potato chips, finish them, then throw their permanent packaging “away”.We buy produce, take it out of the unnecessary plastic wrap, then throw its permanent packaging “away”.
The cycle is endless, and it happens countless times every single day.But here’s the problem —there is no “away”.Chances are, it ends up polluting our communities, oceans or waterways in some form.
For years, we’ve been told the problem of plastic packaging can be solved through better individual action. But the truth is that we cannot recycle our way out of this mess.
Recycling alone will never stop the flow of plastics into our oceans; we have to slow down the production of all this plastic waste.Think about it: if your home was flooding because you had left the tap on, your first step wouldn’t be to start mopping. You’d first cut the flooding off at its source — the tap.In many ways, our plastics problem is no different.
We need corporations — those like Coca-Cola, Unilever, Starbucks and Nestlé that continue to produce throwaway plastic bottles, cups, and straws — to step up and take real responsibility for the mess they’ve created.Drink companies produce over 500 billion single-use plastic bottles annually; there is no way that we can recycle our way out of a problem of that scale.
This is their crisis to tackle. We will continue to do our part, but it’s time for the world’s largest corporations to do theirs. Some 322 million tons of plastic were produced in 2015, and that number is expected to double by 2025.Now, we must demand a new era that places people and planet over profit and convenience.
9.What does the underlined part “there is no ‘away’” in Paragraph 3 mean?( )
A.We can hardly deal with plastic pollution.
B.We can hardly stop using plastic products.
C.The plastic we throw away won’t disappear.
D.The plastic we throw away will do great harm.
10.Why does the author give the example of our home’s flooding?( )
A.To encourage us to save water. B.To teach us how to solve a problem.
C.To tell us how serious plastic pollution is. D.To advise us to find the source of a problem.
11.Who should take the biggest responsibility according to the author?( )
A.The government. B.The big companies.
C.All the individuals. D.The civil organizations.
12.What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?( )
A.To appeal to action. B.To draw a conclusion.
C.To give some suggestions. D.To offer some instructions.

Why are the letters on the keyboard not in alphabetical order? 13.( ) And so as a grown-up, I decided to research it and write a paper about it.
Let’s turn the clock back. About 150 years ago, all letters and business papers were written by hand. Most likely they were written using a pen that had to be dipped in ink every word or two. Writing was slow and messy.
Then some clever inventors built a machine for typing. 14.( ) The trouble was that if you hit two keys quickly the levers would jam. Jams were most likely when the two keys were close together on the keyboard. Rearranging the letters could reduce jams.
Christopher Sholes was an American inventor who was most successful in reducing jams. He tried various arrangements, always trying to reduce the need to type two keys that were close together. 15.( )
He sold his invention to the Remington Company in the United States. In the 1870s, that company built and sold the first commercially successful typewriters. 16.( )
For 100 years or so after the Remington typewriter arrived, vast numbers of people all over the world trained to become touch typists (meaning they could type even without looking much at the keyboard). 17.( ) Because so many people became so skilled at using QWERTY, it became very difficult to get everyone to change to any other key arrangement.
A.They had no other choices.
B.They used the QWERTY keyboard.
C.He was a very successful businessman.
D.That question really puzzled me when I was a kid.
E.The first typewriter had the letter keys in alphabetical order.
F.They were employed to type letters and all other kinds of things.
G.The best arrangement he could find was similar to the QWERTY keyboard we all use today.

It was my twelfth birthday, and what I really wanted most was a new bicycle. But I knew that my family couldn’t afford one, so I settled for a bedside table with lockable drawers, a safe place to keep my private stuff.
We went to the charity shop where we found an old dark one.It didn’t look too cool, but I thought that I would paint it to make it look better.
After we took it home, I was getting ready to paint it.When I pulled the drawers out, I felt something stuck to the back.I reached in all the way, and guess what? A sealed bag with some papers in it.
When I opened the bag, I realised that the papers were official documents. And, wrapped in them were a bunch of ten and twenty dollar bills! Talk about finding a treasure! And on my birthday!
“Is this some kind of joke?” I said aloud.I went ahead and read the papers, and it turned out to be a will. Some old lady was leaving her savings for her son and grandchildren.
My mind was going crazy. Was I the luckiest twelve-year-old ever? With this money I could buy the coolest bicycle.Who knows?
I began counting. When I reached a thousand dollars, my mother was knocking on my bedroom door.I quickly closed the drawer with the money in it.
“Do you want some help? Is everything all right?” she asked.
No, everything was not right.Actually, my stomach was growling (低吼).
“I’m okay,” I lied.
When my mother left my room, I lay on my bed, starting thinking. What a dilemma (窘境)! I wished there were some one I could talk with.Could I keep it and get all kinds of stuff for me and my family? It wouldn’t be too bad for me to keep it, if I shared it ...right? Thoughts ran through my mind. But I really didn’t need someone else to give me the answer.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
I finally made a decision and called my parents into my bedroom.
Though surprised, the shop owner helped find the family’s telephone number.

再结合该段中的we have to slow down the production of all this plastic waste可知,显然作者是在建议我们要发现问题的源头。

22.D 根据上文she was teased by some employees for being fat and可知,她因肥胖和工作做不好而被嘲笑。
So she worked with patience and可知,Sammy耐心工作,并决定调整自己以适应那些不公平的评价。
26.C 根据上文she did most of the work可知,她把大部分工作都做完了,这样其他员工就可以休息了。

Dear Jack,
It’s lovely to hear from you.How is everything going?
Speaking of future career choice, my favourite job is to be a writer.
For one thing, I have been fond of writing since a young age.By writing I can not only express myself but also communicate with others.I firmly believe that a life is worthwhile only when we do what we love. For another, with the rapid development of AI, many traditional jobs will be replaced by robots. And those creative jobs and personalized services can hardly be finished by machines.
What about your dream job? Looking forward to hearing from you.

I finally made a decision and called my parents into my bedroom. When my parents saw what I had found in the drawer, they were surprised and speechless! Then, they read the papers carefully and were moved to tears. When they asked,“What should we do?” I said,“Let’s take it back to the store and find her family.” My father nodded with a smile on his face and my mother hugged me warmly, saying, “You are my pride, dear.” I felt very happy because I already knew right from wrong. We collected all the money and papers at once, putting them in the drawer. We rushed to the charity shop with the drawer in the hope to find the owner as soon as possible.
Though surprised, the shop owner helped find the family’s telephone number.Within a few minutes, the family all came over. When I showed them what I had found in the drawer, they couldn’t believe their eyes. The parents had tears in their eyes, who were still sad about the lady’s death. It was easy to see that my act of honesty gave them hope. They showed me sincere gratitude from the bottom of their hearts. In fact, never had I felt better before. No new bicycle could have made me feel as good about myself as I felt that day because I passed a very important test — a lost and found test of my own character.

M:Do they say anything about needing to have experience of a journalist?
W:No, they want someone young and energetic.Oh, yes, they want a university graduate, so that’s OK.You’ve been to university. The only thing is that you have to travel, but then that’s what the company car is for.

(Text 1)
M:What did you do after graduation?
W:I’d planned to be a teacher, but then I was offered a good job
doing marketing, so I changed my mind.
M:Sounds like you’re happy with your decision.
W:I am.I enjoy my job very much.By the way, have you not had
any job offers yet?
M:I had one, but I didn’t like the job very much.I’d also really
wanted to attend graduate school, but I was afraid I couldn’t pay
that much money.
W:I think you need to make a decision, stick to it and don’t be
afraid of difficulties.
(Text 2)
W:Look, Jack! Here’s a job that might interest you.
M:Are you sure? The last job interview you sent me to was really a
disaster.
W:Well, look! It’s a big company. You might get to travel.
M:What kind of company is it, though?
W:Um, let’s see.It’s a newspaper office.They say the pay is
really good. And oh, look! They give you a car to travel
around.That’s not bad, is it?
M:Do they say anything about needing to have experience of a
journalist?
W:No, they want someone young and energetic.Oh, yes, they
want a university graduate, so that’s OK. You’ve been to
university. The only thing is that you have to travel, but then that’s
what the company car is for.
M:Perhaps I’ll have a closer look at it.
(Text 3)
W:John, when you were little, what did you dream you’d grow
up to be?
M:Oh, I dreamed that I’d be a pilot when I grew up.
W:So what happened? Did you just lose interest in being a pilot?
M:No.My parents said it was too dangerous, and they wanted me
to find a safer job.How about you? What did you dream of becoming
when you were a little girl?
W:When I was a little girl, I dreamed of being a great scientist,
but now, as you can see, I’m just a common office clerk.
M:So what are your dreams now?
W:Well, I really want to be a translator some day, so I’m
working hard to learn English.
M:You’re so good at language learning.Your French and Italian are
already fluent.Well, I hope you succeed in that dream some day!
W:Thanks.
(Text 4)
W:Hi, Bob! I am so glad that you came.
M:Of course I’d come.I couldn’t think of a better chance to see
all my old friends.
W:It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since graduation.
M:How time flies! How are things going with you?
W:It’s only recently that I’ve been able to start settling
down. How about you? Are you still with Jenny?
M:Yeah, Jenny and I got married right after graduation. It was hard
for the first three years — I was supporting us both while she
continued her studies — but now things are getting better.I work as a
manager in a trade company and she’s working at a law firm. It’s
all started to come together and we’re finally able to make a life for
ourselves.
W:Oh, that sounds wonderful.I have always known you two would
make it.I hope I can keep in better contact with you.
M:Definitely! Actually, we just moved into a new
place. There’s a house-warming party this Saturday, if you are
free. I know Jenny would love to see you again and it should be a
good party.
W:Sounds great! I am free this weekend and I’ll be there.

Step 2
“I would like to apply for ...” “Please find my CV attached.” “I
believe I would be a valuable addition ...” “I have done ...” “I
have experience in ...,and ...” “I am ...and I enjoy ...” “With
my proficiency in ..., I could also ...”
Cover Letter。
and address), 教育背景(education)、工作经验(work

Is it possible that there are basic myths
and lies that are ruining your life, holding back your career or justifying
an unhappy or unfulfilled life?
The little things we believe or tell ourselves can go a long way
towards affecting our success. Here’s what Greg McKeown, author and
Young Global Leader at World Economic Forum, had to say.
Why do capable people fail to break through to the next level? It’s
a question McKeown began pursuing an answer to when he quit law school
15 years ago.“The answer to the question, to my great surprise, is
success,” he wrote in his post 12 Myths That Lead to a Busy,
Unfulfilling Life.
“I found that success can be a catalyst (催化剂) for failure,”
McKeown wrote. What often happens, he said, is that successful people
get disturbed by small things.
He pointed to 12 big myths that can lead to a stressful, unsatisfying
career and life.Among them:
“If everyone is doing it, then I need to do it. Let the fear of
missing out consume you.Buy into the cultural belief that glorifies being
busy and checking social media and email constantly.Don’t pay attention
to the quiet voice telling you a different life is possible.Just go with the
crowd.The truth:There is a joy in missing out.Discover it.
“I’ll stay up late and get it done.If you ever mention sleep to
someone remember to talk about how little you’ve had lately.Boast
about getting five hours last night, or about how you pulled an all-nighter
earlier this week. It’s okay to be tired and to admit it.But don’t show
weakness — or worse, laziness — by suggesting you need a full eight
hours. The truth: Sleep is for high performers.”
The lesson is simple.“When organising your life, there are only
two choices: The disciplined pursuit of the essential or the undisciplined
pursuit of the nonessential,” McKeown wrote.“And that matters
because if you don’t control your life, someone else will.”

D. What keeps capable people from winning greater success.

2. Why can success be a catalyst for failure according to Greg
McKeown?( )
A. Successful people will become proud.
B. Success may offer people more challenges.
C. Successful people won’t work hard any more.
D. Success can prevent people from concentrating.
3. What does Greg McKeown advise us to do?( )
A. Go with the crowd.
B. Check email regularly.
C. Follow your own course.
D. Check social media often.

立异。
4. In Paragraph 7, Greg McKeown stressed the importance
of .( )
A. working hard

Think of mental work as doing
push-ups,” says Josh Davis, author of Two Awesome Hours.Say you
want to do 10,000.The most “efficient” way would be to do them all
at once without a break. We know, though, that that is
impossible.Instead, if we did just a few at a time, between other
activities and stretched (延伸) out over weeks, hitting 10,000 would
become far more feasible.
“The brain is very much like a muscle in this respect,” Davis
writes.“Set up the wrong conditions through constant work and we can
accomplish little.Set up the right conditions and there is probably little we
can’t do.”
Many of us, though, tend to think of our brains not as muscles,
but as a computer: a machine capable of constant work. Not only is that
untrue, but pushing ourselves to work for hours without a break can be
harmful, some experts say.
“The idea that you can unlimitedly stretch out your deep focus and
productivity time is really wrong,” says research scientist Andrew
Smart, author of Autopilot.“If you’re constantly doing this, where
your physiology is saying ‘I need a break’ but you keep pushing
yourself, you get this low-level stress response — and, over time,
extraordinarily dangerous.”
One analysis found that long working hours increased the risk of heart
disease by 40% — almost as much as smoking (50%).Another found
that people who worked long hours had a much higher risk of stroke,
while people who worked more than 11 hours a day were almost 2.5 times
more likely to suffer from depression than those who worked seven to
eight. In Japan, this has led to the disturbing trend of karoshi, or death
by overwork.
If you’re wondering if this means that you might want to consider
taking that long-delayed holiday, the answer may be yes.One study of
businessmen in Helsinki found that over 26 years, executives and
businessmen who took fewer holidays in midlife predicted both earlier
deaths and worse health in old age.

Every minute, every single day,
about a truckload of plastic enters our oceans.Since the 1950s, some 8.3
billion tons of plastic have been produced worldwide, and to date, only
9% of that has been recycled.
We buy a bottle of water, drink it for a few minutes, and toss its
permanent packaging “away”.We eat potato chips, finish them, then
throw their permanent packaging “away”.We buy produce, take it out
of the unnecessary plastic wrap, then throw its permanent packaging
“away”.
The cycle is endless, and it happens countless times every single
day.But here’s the problem —there is no “away”.Chances are, it
ends up polluting our communities, oceans or waterways in some form.
For years, we’ve been told the problem of plastic packaging can be
solved through better individual action. But the truth is that we cannot
recycle our way out of this mess.
Recycling alone will never stop the flow of plastics into our oceans;
we have to slow down the production of all this plastic waste.Think about
it: if your home was flooding because you had left the tap on, your first
step wouldn’t be to start mopping. You’d first cut the flooding off at its
source — the tap.In many ways, our plastics problem is no different.
We need corporations — those like Coca-Cola, Unilever,
Starbucks and Nestlé that continue to produce throwaway plastic bottles,
cups, and straws — to step up and take real responsibility for the mess
they’ve created.Drink companies produce over 500 billion single-use
plastic bottles annually; there is no way that we can recycle our way out
of a problem of that scale.
This is their crisis to tackle. We will continue to do our part, but
it’s time for the world’s largest corporations to do theirs. Some 322
million tons of plastic were produced in 2015, and that number is
expected to double by 2025.Now, we must demand a new era that places
people and planet over profit and convenience.

9. What does the underlined part “there is no ‘away’” in Paragraph 3
mean?( )
A. We can hardly deal with plastic pollution.
B. We can hardly stop using plastic products.
C. The plastic we throw away won’t disappear.
D. The plastic we throw away will do great harm.
10. Why does the author give the example of our home’s flooding?
( )
A. To encourage us to save water.
B. To teach us how to solve a problem.
C. To tell us how serious plastic pollution is.
D. To advise us to find the source of a problem.

再结合该段中的we have to slow down the production of all this
11. Who should take the biggest responsibility according to the author?
( )
A. The government.
B. The big companies.
C. All the individuals.
D. The civil organizations.
12. What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?( )
A. To appeal to action.
B. To draw a conclusion.
C. To give some suggestions.
D. To offer some instructions.

Why are the letters on the keyboard
not in alphabetical order? 13.( ) And so as a grown-up, I
decided to research it and write a paper about it.
Let’s turn the clock back. About 150 years ago, all letters and
business papers were written by hand. Most likely they were written using
a pen that had to be dipped in ink every word or two. Writing was slow
and messy.
Then some clever inventors built a machine for typing. 14.( )
The trouble was that if you hit two keys quickly the levers would jam.
Jams were most likely when the two keys were close together on the
keyboard. Rearranging the letters could reduce jams.
Christopher Sholes was an American inventor who was most
successful in reducing jams. He tried various arrangements, always
trying to reduce the need to type two keys that were close together. 15.
( )
He sold his invention to the Remington Company in the United
States. In the 1870s, that company built and sold the first commercially
successful typewriters. 16.( )
For 100 years or so after the Remington typewriter arrived, vast
numbers of people all over the world trained to become touch typists
(meaning they could type even without looking much at the keyboard).
17.( ) Because so many people became so skilled at using
QWERTY, it became very difficult to get everyone to change to any
other key arrangement.
A. They had no other choices.
B. They used the QWERTY keyboard.

It was my twelfth birthday, and what I really wanted most was a
new bicycle. But I knew that my family couldn’t afford one, so I settled
for a bedside table with lockable drawers, a safe place to keep my private
stuff.
We went to the charity shop where we found an old dark one.It
didn’t look too cool, but I thought that I would paint it to make it look
better.
After we took it home, I was getting ready to paint it.When I pulled
the drawers out, I felt something stuck to the back.I reached in all the
way, and guess what? A sealed bag with some papers in it.
When I opened the bag, I realised that the papers were official
documents. And, wrapped in them were a bunch of ten and twenty dollar
bills! Talk about finding a treasure! And on my birthday!
“Is this some kind of joke?” I said aloud.I went ahead and read
the papers, and it turned out to be a will. Some old lady was leaving her
savings for her son and grandchildren.
My mind was going crazy. Was I the luckiest twelve-year-old ever?
With this money I could buy the coolest bicycle.Who knows?
I began counting. When I reached a thousand dollars, my mother
was knocking on my bedroom door.I quickly closed the drawer with the
money in it.
“Do you want some help? Is everything all right?” she asked.
No, everything was not right.Actually, my stomach was growling
“I’m okay,” I lied.
When my mother left my room, I lay on my bed, starting
thinking. What a dilemma (窘境)! I wished there were some one I
could talk with.Could I keep it and get all kinds of stuff for me and my
family? It wouldn’t be too bad for me to keep it, if I shared
it ...right? Thoughts ran through my mind. But I really didn’t need
someone else to give me the answer.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

I finally made a decision and called my parents into my
bedroom. When my parents saw what I had found in the drawer, they
were surprised and speechless! Then, they read the papers carefully and
were moved to tears. When they asked,“What should we do?” I
said,“Let’s take it back to the store and find her family.” My father
nodded with a smile on his face and my mother hugged me warmly,
saying, “You are my pride, dear.” I felt very happy because I
already knew right from wrong. We collected all the money and papers at
once, putting them in the drawer. We rushed to the charity shop with the
drawer in the hope to find the owner as soon as possible.
Though surprised, the shop owner helped find the family’s
telephone number.Within a few minutes, the family all came over. When
I showed them what I had found in the drawer, they couldn’t believe
their eyes. The parents had tears in their eyes, who were still sad about
the lady’s death. It was easy to see that my act of honesty gave them
hope. They showed me sincere gratitude from the bottom of their hearts. In
fact, never had I felt better before. No new bicycle could have made me
feel as good about myself as I felt that day because I passed a very
important test — a lost and found test of my own character.
