Bhutan is one of the world’s most mysterious countries.Visiting it can be challenging, but there’s a new drive to finally cross it off the bucket list in 2022, as its breathtaking Trans Bhutan Trail will be reopening to travelers for the first time in 60 years.
According to the Bhutan Canada Foundation — the main donor to the restoration project — the 250-mile route connects nine districts, 28 local governments, one national park and 400 historic and cultural sites.Travelers who follow the entire trail route will cross 18 major bridges and climb 10,000 stairs. It will be possible to walk or mountain bike there.
“This is a community-based project in both its building and operation which will restore an ancient cultural treasure and provide a sustainable, net zero carbon experience in the country for travelers,” says Sam Blyth, chair of the Bhutan Canada Foundation.“The Trans Bhutan Trail also reflects the country’s philosophy of Gross National Happiness and will allow the children of Bhutan to walk in the footsteps of their ancestors.”
The trail’s westernmost point is the town of Haa, which is near the border with Xizang, China. The easternmost point is Trashigang, near the border of India’s Arunachal Pradesh state.According to a representative for the Bhutan Canada Foundation, an ambitious walker could cover the whole trail in about a month, but most tourists will likely enjoy shorter parts of the trail on three-, four-, or seven-day trips.
Due to its “high value, low impact” tourism strategy, Bhutan averages just a few thousand visitors in a typical year.As part of its aim to avoid overtourism, the country charges a mandatory (强制的) $250 per day fee, which includes land transport, accommodations, food and guide service. The cost makes it somewhat prohibitive for many people to visit. And walkers to the Trans Bhutan Trail will have to apply for a permit. They can do this beginning in April.

The area of the Yellow River Wetland Park in Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, was once a place local people avoided:the waste water caused awful smells and almost no grass could grow on the land.
Now, the park has become not only a popular destination for locals to take a walk, but also a habitat frequented by migratory birds (候鸟).
As secretary general of Ningxia’s bird observation association, Li Zhijun witnessed the huge changes at the park.According to him, the Yinchuan wetland park, together with other wetland areas along the Yellow River in Ningxia, has become a famous spot for bird photographers.More habitats for migratory birds are appearing as the environment improves, added Li in an interview with China Daily.
The Yinchuan wetland park mirrors China’s achievements in wetland protection. On 10 November, seven Chinese cities were awarded “international wetland cities” at the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands(COP 14).So far, there are 13 wetland cities in China, showing a great variety of patterns and styles.
For example, Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province, is known as a “city of a hundred lakes”.The city has five large wetland reserves, where tens of thousands of birds come to stay in wintertime, noted the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.
Liangping district in Chongqing, however, is totally different from natural wetland. It is more closely tied to human activity.People built small wetlands in rural areas. What’s more, they have combined these wetlands with organic farms, homestays, and healthcare centers, which has resulted in an income increase of 52,000 yuan per household.
Panjin in Liaoning Province is another amazing wetland city.In the past, the city has long suffered from environmental problems caused by oil production. But now in the coastal wetlands, seagrass turns a breathtaking red every autumn, creating beautiful “red beaches”.
Chen Zhihai, a local fishery worker, said to Panjin Daily,“In the past, there were almost no wild fish and shrimp. Thanks to the efforts of ordinary Panjin people, now the wetland is back again!”
5.Why is the Yellow River Wetland Park mentioned at the beginning of the article?( )
A.To compare it with other famous wetlands.
B.To show China’s achievements in wetland protection.
C.To explain why it has become a popular destination.
D.To explain the importance of wetlands to migratory birds.
6.How do wetlands in Liangping differ from other wetlands with more natural scenery?( )
A.Thousands of birds stay there in winter.
B.Small wetlands were built near lakes.
C.They are more closely connected to human activity.
D.They are popular destinations for people to take a walk.
7.What is special about the coastal wetlands in Panjin?( )
A.The water there is purple.
B.They have beautiful “red beaches”.
C.They are home to different types of shrimps.
D.They are an ideal destination for fishing.
8.In which part of a newspaper will you probably find the article?( )
A.Lifestyle. B.Sports.
C.Business. D.Travel.

A recent study, led by Professor Andrew Barron, Dr HaDi MaBouDi, and Professor James Marshall, illustrates how evolution has fine-tuned honey bees to make quick judgments while minimizing danger.
“Animal lives are full of decisions,” says Professor Andrew Barron.“A honey bee has a brain smaller than a sesame (芝麻) seed. And yet it can make decisions faster and more accurately than we can.A robot programmed to do a bee’s job would need the backup of a supercomputer.”
Bees need to work quickly and efficiently. They need to make decisions.Which flower will have nectar (花蜜)? While they’re flying, they face threats from the air. While landing, they’re vulnerable to potential predators (捕食者), some of which use camouflage (伪装) to look like flowers.
Researchers trained 20 bees to associate each of the five different coloured “flower disks” with their visit history of reward and punishment.Blue flowers always had sugar juice.Green flowers always had a type of liquid with a bitter taste for bees.Other colours sometimes had glucose (葡萄糖).
“Then we introduced each bee to a ‘garden’ with artificial ‘flowers’.We filmed each bee and timed their decision-making process,” says Dr MaBouDi.“If the bees were confident that a flower would have food, they quickly decided to land on it, taking an average of 0.6 seconds. If they were confident that a flower wouldn’t have food, they made a decision just as quickly. If unsure, they took on average 1.4 seconds — and the time reflected the probability that a flower had food.”
The team then built a computer model mirroring the bees’ decision-making process. They found the structure of the model looked very similar to the physical layout of a bee brain.“AI researchers can learn much from bees and other ‘simple’ animals.Millions of years of evolution has led to incredibly efficient brains with very low power requirements,” says Professor James Marshall, who co-founded a company that uses insect brain patterns to enable machines to move autonomously, like nature.
9.Why does Professor Andrew Barron mention “a supercomputer”?( )
A.To illustrate its similarities to a honey bee’s brain.
B.To explain how animals arrive at informed decisions.
C.To demonstrate how a robot could finish a honey bee’s job.
D.To emphasize a honey bee’s remarkable decision-making abilities.
10.Which of the following can best replace “vulnerable to” underlined in Paragraph 3?( )
A.deeply critical to
B.easily harmed by
C.closely followed by
D.highly sensitive to
11.What influenced the trained bees’ speed in making decisions?( )
A.Their judgments about reward and punishment.
B.Their preference for the colours of flower disks.
C.Their confidence in the presence or absence of food.
D.Their ability to distinguish real flowers from artificial ones.
12.What message does Professor James Marshall want to give us?( )
A.Biology can inspire future AI.
B.AI should be more energy-efficient.
C.The power of bee brains is underestimated.
D.Autonomous machines are changing nature.

With gas prices rising and airport security lines snaking longer than ever, why not book your next domestic vacation on a train? Compared to other alternatives, it’s comfortable and relaxing. Here is some advice on how to make a trip by rail as pleasant as possible.
Plan ahead. Most long-distance trains, especially the sleeping car accommodations, sell out very quickly.13.( ) But no matter when you travel, it’s a good idea to make your reservations at least 90 days in advance.
Use a travel agent.Consider turning your travel plan over to a travel agent and letting him double-check all the details, make suggestions, and then handle the actual reservations.A good one can sometimes find you discounted tickets.14.( ) Then you won’t have to walk through several cars on a moving train three times a day for your meals.
Bring a blanket. When you’re riding on trains, you won’t be provided with a blanket for free, even if your trip is an overnight one.15.( ) In the summer in particular, the air conditioning can make them quite cold.
Arrive early. Most trains operate just once a day and some run only three times a week, so missing yours can be a disaster.16.( ) Note:The times listed on the schedules are departure times, not arrival times.
Have fun.17.( ) Read a book, knit, do a crossword puzzle, or simply watch the world unfold outside the window. To calculate your speed as you do, divide 3,600 (the number of seconds in an hour) by the number of seconds it takes you to travel one mile (the distance between two mile posts). If it takes the train 53 seconds to travel one mile, you’re going 67.92 mph.
A.Train trips aren’t for impatient types.
B.You’ll have views from both sides of the train.
C.The temperature on rail cars is often hard to control.
D.That’s particularly true during busy summer months.
E.You might have to wait longer than 24 hours to catch the next one.
F.Chances are the cost will be a lot less than the cost of one bedroom.
G.He may also book you in a sleeping car that’s right next to the diner.

Bhutan is one of the world’s most mysterious countries.Visiting it
can be challenging, but there’s a new drive to finally cross it off the
bucket list in 2022, as its breathtaking Trans Bhutan Trail will be
reopening to travelers for the first time in 60 years.
According to the Bhutan Canada Foundation — the main donor to the
restoration project — the 250-mile route connects nine districts, 28 local
governments, one national park and 400 historic and cultural
sites.Travelers who follow the entire trail route will cross 18 major bridges
and climb 10,000 stairs. It will be possible to walk or mountain bike
there.
“This is a community-based project in both its building and
operation which will restore an ancient cultural treasure and provide a
sustainable, net zero carbon experience in the country for travelers,”
says Sam Blyth, chair of the Bhutan Canada Foundation.“The Trans
Bhutan Trail also reflects the country’s philosophy of Gross National
Happiness and will allow the children of Bhutan to walk in the footsteps of
their ancestors.”
The trail’s westernmost point is the town of Haa, which is near the
border with Xizang, China. The easternmost point is Trashigang, near
the border of India’s Arunachal Pradesh state.According to a
representative for the Bhutan Canada Foundation, an ambitious walker
could cover the whole trail in about a month, but most tourists will likely
enjoy shorter parts of the trail on three-, four-, or seven-day trips.
Due to its “high value, low impact” tourism strategy, Bhutan
averages just a few thousand visitors in a typical year.As part of its aim to
avoid overtourism, the country charges a mandatory (强制的) $250
per day fee, which includes land transport, accommodations, food and
guide service. The cost makes it somewhat prohibitive for many people to
visit. And walkers to the Trans Bhutan Trail will have to apply for a
permit. They can do this beginning in April.

The area of the Yellow River Wetland Park in Yinchuan, capital of
Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, was once a place local people
avoided:the waste water caused awful smells and almost no grass could
grow on the land.
Now, the park has become not only a popular destination for locals
to take a walk, but also a habitat frequented by migratory birds (候
鸟).
As secretary general of Ningxia’s bird observation association, Li
Zhijun witnessed the huge changes at the park.According to him, the
Yinchuan wetland park, together with other wetland areas along the
Yellow River in Ningxia, has become a famous spot for bird
photographers.More habitats for migratory birds are appearing as the
environment improves, added Li in an interview with China Daily.
The Yinchuan wetland park mirrors China’s achievements in
wetland protection. On 10 November, seven Chinese cities were awarded
“international wetland cities” at the 14th Meeting of the Conference of
the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands(COP
14).So far, there are 13 wetland cities in China, showing a great
variety of patterns and styles.
For example, Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province, is
known as a “city of a hundred lakes”.The city has five large wetland
reserves, where tens of thousands of birds come to stay in wintertime,
noted the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.
Liangping district in Chongqing, however, is totally different from
natural wetland. It is more closely tied to human activity.People built small
wetlands in rural areas. What’s more, they have combined these
wetlands with organic farms, homestays, and healthcare centers,
which has resulted in an income increase of 52,000 yuan per household.
Panjin in Liaoning Province is another amazing wetland city.In the
past, the city has long suffered from environmental problems caused by
oil production. But now in the coastal wetlands, seagrass turns a
breathtaking red every autumn, creating beautiful “red beaches”.
Chen Zhihai, a local fishery worker, said to Panjin Daily,“In
the past, there were almost no wild fish and shrimp. Thanks to the efforts
of ordinary Panjin people, now the wetland is back again!”

A recent study, led by Professor Andrew Barron, Dr HaDi
MaBouDi, and Professor James Marshall, illustrates how evolution has
fine-tuned honey bees to make quick judgments while minimizing danger.
“Animal lives are full of decisions,” says Professor Andrew
Barron.“A honey bee has a brain smaller than a sesame (芝麻)
seed. And yet it can make decisions faster and more accurately than we
can.A robot programmed to do a bee’s job would need the backup of a
supercomputer.”
Bees need to work quickly and efficiently. They need to make
decisions.Which flower will have nectar (花蜜)? While they’re
flying, they face threats from the air. While landing, they’re
vulnerable to potential predators (捕食者), some of which use
camouflage (伪装) to look like flowers.
Researchers trained 20 bees to associate each of the five different
coloured “flower disks” with their visit history of reward and
punishment.Blue flowers always had sugar juice.Green flowers always
had a type of liquid with a bitter taste for bees.Other colours sometimes
had glucose (葡萄糖).
“Then we introduced each bee to a ‘garden’ with artificial
‘flowers’.We filmed each bee and timed their decision-making
process,” says Dr MaBouDi.“If the bees were confident that a flower
would have food, they quickly decided to land on it, taking an average
of 0.6 seconds. If they were confident that a flower wouldn’t have
food, they made a decision just as quickly. If unsure, they took on
average 1.4 seconds — and the time reflected the probability that a flower
had food.”
The team then built a computer model mirroring the bees’ decision-
making process. They found the structure of the model looked very similar
to the physical layout of a bee brain.“AI researchers can learn much from
bees and other ‘simple’ animals.Millions of years of evolution has led
to incredibly efficient brains with very low power requirements,” says
Professor James Marshall, who co-founded a company that uses insect
brain patterns to enable machines to move autonomously, like nature.

9. Why does Professor Andrew Barron mention “a supercomputer”?
( )
A. To illustrate its similarities to a honey bee’s brain.
B. To explain how animals arrive at informed decisions.
C. To demonstrate how a robot could finish a honey bee’s job.
D. To emphasize a honey bee’s remarkable decision-making abilities.

in Paragraph 3?( )
A. deeply critical to B. easily harmed by
C. closely followed by D. highly sensitive to
解析: 词义猜测题。根据第三段中的They need to make

成花朵。
11. What influenced the trained bees’ speed in making decisions?
( )
A. Their judgments about reward and punishment.
B. Their preference for the colours of flower disks.
C. Their confidence in the presence or absence of food.
D. Their ability to distinguish real flowers from artificial ones.

confident ...a flower had food.
12. What message does Professor James Marshall want to give us?
( )
A. Biology can inspire future AI.
B. AI should be more energy-efficient.
C. The power of bee brains is underestimated.
D. Autonomous machines are changing nature.

With gas prices rising and airport security lines snaking longer than
ever, why not book your next domestic vacation on a train? Compared
to other alternatives, it’s comfortable and relaxing. Here is some advice
on how to make a trip by rail as pleasant as possible.
Plan ahead. Most long-distance trains, especially the sleeping car
accommodations, sell out very quickly.13.( ) But no matter
when you travel, it’s a good idea to make your reservations at least 90
days in advance.
Use a travel agent.Consider turning your travel plan over to a travel
agent and letting him double-check all the details, make suggestions,
and then handle the actual reservations.A good one can sometimes find
you discounted tickets.14.( ) Then you won’t have to walk
through several cars on a moving train three times a day for your meals.
Bring a blanket. When you’re riding on trains, you won’t be
provided with a blanket for free, even if your trip is an overnight one.15.
( ) In the summer in particular, the air conditioning can make
them quite cold.
Arrive early. Most trains operate just once a day and some run only
three times a week, so missing yours can be a disaster.16.( )
Note:The times listed on the schedules are departure times, not arrival
times.
Have fun.17.( ) Read a book, knit, do a crossword
puzzle, or simply watch the world unfold outside the window. To
calculate your speed as you do, divide 3,600 (the number of seconds
in an hour) by the number of seconds it takes you to travel one mile (the
distance between two mile posts). If it takes the train 53 seconds to travel
one mile, you’re going 67.92 mph.
A. Train trips aren’t for impatient types.
B. You’ll have views from both sides of the train.
C. The temperature on rail cars is often hard to control.
D. That’s particularly true during busy summer months.
E. You might have to wait longer than 24 hours to catch the next one.
F. Chances are the cost will be a lot less than the cost of one bedroom.
G. He may also book you in a sleeping car that’s right next to the diner.

Being a responsible traveler starts with learning about local
customs and traditions of the places we visit and showing respect for
them.Dress appropriately, behave responsibly, and be mindful of
local sensitivities.More importantly, as responsible travelers, we
