A cancer survivor has become the first woman to complete an exhausting “Sea to Summit” triathlon (三项全能运动) which saw her swim, cycle, and run over 330 miles in just five days. Andrea Mason was overjoyed when she crossed the finish line early Wednesday morning.
The race was set in the French Alps. Setting off at 6:15 a.m. on Friday, 39 year old Mason battled through severe pain, and hallucinations (幻觉), but she pushed on — managing to complete the race in an impressive four days, 23 hours, and 41 minutes. Andrea had been diagnosed with cancer and needed life saving surgery. Following a successful operation, she is now hoping to raise awareness of women's health. In the past year, Andrea set up her own charity, Lady Talk Matters, in order to improve surrounding females' health.
Andrea, from Blackpool in Lancashire, England, said, “I am so happy all went according to plan as there were so many things that could have gone wrong. I wanted to do it in five days, and I did, but it was very tough. I had some low moments, particularly when I couldn't sleep in my limited rest periods, and when I couldn't keep any food down as I was running. For sure I had some doubts along the way as I was exploring the unknown with such a huge run, particularly as large parts of it were in the dark. It was bigger than I imagined; the impact on my body was huge. But every time I felt like giving up, I thought about all the women out there in pain or who still hadn't been diagnosed. That is why I put myself through this.”
Andrea had to swim 23 miles around Lake Annecy, cycle 205 miles with 30,000 feet of vertical climbing around Mont Blanc, and run 105 miles with 4,000 feet of vertical climbing around The Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc. You could say Andrea's actually spent a lifetime training for an event like this. She completed her first three mile race “powered by chocolate bars” when she was just four.
4.What brought Andrea Mason so much joy
A.She joined a race.
B.She defeated cancer.
C.She finished a marathon in five days.
D.She finished a triathlon lately.
5.What is the purpose of Andrea's creating her own charity
A.To help the poor women.
B.To promote women's health.
C.To focus on women's life.
D.To raise the status of women.
6.When did Andrea become doubtful during the running
A.When she couldn't eat.
B.When she couldn't sleep.
C.When she ran at night.
D.When she couldn't give up.
7.What made Andrea finish the race successfully
A.Her strong willpower.
B.Her family's support.
C.Thinking of other women who might be in pain or have cancer.
D.Thinking of other women who had more pain.

Andrew Grey doesn't fit most people's idea of an astronomer. He works in a car repair shop, not in a lab or university, yet the Australian repairman discovered a star system hiding in data from NASA's Kepler space telescope.
Mr Grey is one of millions of citizen scientists helping researchers to expand collective understanding. For centuries, only a few ordinary people had been contributing to science, but advances in technology have brought a higher level of democratization (民主化) to science.
“This is a collaborative (合作的) effort that anyone could get involved in,” says Chris Lintott, an Oxford University astrophysicist (天体物理学家) and co founder of Zooniverse, a platform that hosts dozens of citizen science projects.Citizen scientists can contribute to breakthroughs in almost any field, from ecology to astrophysics.
“As long as pattern recognition is involved, there are no limits to what can become a citizen science project,” Lintott says.“Anyone can identify patterns in images, graphs, or even seemingly boring data after a short tutorial.Machine learning allows computers to do some pattern recognition. But humans, particularly amateur scientists, don't stay focused on what they're supposed to.And that's good, because people who do that notice the unusual things in a data set.”
“And citizen science doesn't have to be directed by a scientist,” says Sheila Jasanoff, director of the Program on Science, Technology and Society at Harvard University.“Citizens producing knowledge in places where official organs have failed them can also be citizen scientists,” she says. That's what happened in Flint, Michigan, when a local mother started drinking water tests that caused a broader investigation of lead levels.
Citizen powered research is as old as scientific inquiry. For centuries before science became professionalized, regular people looked for patterns in the world around them.Despite a lot of advanced equipment and computer models, scientists still welcome help from everyday people.
As a professional scientist himself, Lintott says, “People think that we're intelligent, but science is easy and we need your help.”
8.What made citizen scientists appear
A.The high level of science projects.
B.The development of technology.
C.The support of the government.
D.The foundation of Zooniverse.
9.What is an advantage of humans in pattern recognition compared with machines
A.Humans can identify patterns more swiftly.
B.Humans focus their attention on data.
C.Humans can observe uncommon things.
D.Humans have stronger emotions.
10.What is Lintott's attitude towards citizen science
A.Favorable. B.Cautious.
C.Indifferent. D.Doubtful.
11.What would be the best title of the text
A.Citizen scientists can be intelligent
B.Science is important to everyone
C.Anyone can be a scientist
D.Science is everywhere

Valerie L. Thomas is an African American scientist and inventor best known for her patented (专利的) illusion transmitter (幻觉发射器) and contributions to NASA research.
Valerie was born in 1943 in Maryland. She was interested in science as a child. At the age of eight, her curiosity about how things worked inspired her to borrow a book called The Boy's First Book of Radio and Electronics, which she took home hoping her father would help her take on some projects in it. However, he didn't help her.
She attended an all girls high school that did not help her with hands on projects either. But this changed in college, when Valerie was admitted to Morgan State University as one of the only two women in her class to major in physics. Valerie excelled_in her studies. She graduated with excellent results and accepted a position as a data analyst at NASA.
In the 1970s, she managed the development of the image processing systems for Landsat, the first satellite (人造卫星) to send images to the Earth from space. In 1980, Valerie received a patent for an illusion transmitter. The device produces optical illusion images by means of two concave mirrors (凹面镜). Unlike flat mirrors, which produce images that appear to be inside, or behind the mirror, concave mirrors create images that appear to be real, or in front of the mirror itself. This technology was later used by NASA and has since been adapted for use in surgery (外科手术) as well as the production of television and video screens.
Valerie continued to work for NASA until her retirement in 1995. Over the course of her career, Valerie contributed widely to the study of space. She helped develop computer program designs that supported research on Halley's Comet, the ozone layer, and satellite technology. For her achievements, Valerie received a number of NASA awards including the Goddard Space Flight Center Award of Merit and the NASA Equal Opportunity Medal.
12.What do we know about Valerie's early life
A.She was talented in science.
B.She liked working with her father.
C.She lacked support for her interest.
D.She preferred to read boys' books.
13.What does the underlined phrase “excelled in” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Did well in. B.Had confidence in.
C.Was curious about. D.Was concerned with.
14.What is the advantage of Valerie's invention over flat mirrors
A.It takes pictures more clearly.
B.It transmits images more quickly.
C.It changes the position of the image.
D.It can send images to the Earth from space.
15.What does the last paragraph focus on
A.Valerie's future plans.
B.Valerie's retirement life.
C.Valerie's research theory.
D.Valerie's lifetime achievements.

Crying Mother
Coming home from school that dark winter day so long ago, I was filled with excitement of having the weekend off.But I was shocked into stillness by what I saw.Mother was seated at the far end of the sofa, crying with the second hand green typewriter on the table. She told me that she couldn't type fast and then she was out of work.
My shock and embarrassment at finding Mother in tears was a perfect proof of how little I understood the pressures on her.Sitting beside her on the sofa, I began very slowly to understand.“I guess we all have to fail sometimes.” Mother said quietly.I could sense her pain and the tension of holding back the strong feelings that were interrupted by my arrival.
Suddenly something inside me turned.I reached out and put my arms around her.She broke then. She put her face against my shoulder and sobbed (啜泣).I held her tightly and didn't try to talk.I knew I was doing what I should, what I could and that it was enough. At that moment, feeling Mother's back with feelings, I understood for the first time her being so easy to break. She was still my mother, yet she was something more: a person like me, capable of fear and hurt and failure.I could feel her pain as she must have felt mine on a thousand occasions when I sought comfort in her arms.
A week later Mother took a job selling dry goods at half the salary the radio station offered.“It's a job I can do, though,” she said simply. But the evening practice on the cold green typewriter continued.I had a very different feeling now when I passed her door at night and heard her tapping away across the paper.I knew there was something more going on in there than a woman learning to type.
