Hit the beaches
Everyone knows about Bondi Beach and its Icebergs pool, restaurants and the crashing waves are the postcard image of Sydney. Bondi is a great place to start. The first time my parents watched me compete in a mountain bike race, they tried to get me to give up. While I was riding down a hill, I hit a huge rock, flew through the air and fell to the ground. However, this kind of thing happens all the time. I just got up as fast as I could, got back on my bike and kept going. And I won that race, despite taking quite a spill!
My earliest bike memories are of my father taking me out for rides in the child seat on the back of his ten speed. A couple years later, I got my first bike. But my parents wouldn't let me ride more than a few blocks from the house until I was ten. The morning of my tenth birthday, I got my older sister to take me on a long ride. We ended up at my aunt's house. I was totally exhausted and every muscle in my body ached. But I didn't care. I knew that this was only the beginning, and all I could think about was where my next trip would take me.
When I was in the eighth grade, our gym teacher, Mr Raines, sent out a flyer about starting a mountain bike club. I signed up. Over the next few months, the ten of us who joined the club worked on our biking skills. Besides taking us out riding, Mr Raines taught us about bike safety, and showed us how to properly maintain and repair our bikes. He also helped us form a mountain bike team. At first, we competed against each other. Later, we went up against other schools. We continued to train and compete all through high school.
Biking has been the major focus of my life. Those early trips on the back of my father's bike got me started. The long rides with my sister increased my enthusiasm. Then, the training and competitions in the bike club guaranteed that I would turn into a lifelong bike fan. I think everyone should have a hobby like this — something that is good for them and makes them happy.
4.What happened to the author during his mountain bike race

As a coder, Nand Vinchhi wanted to invent something that didn't require a device. He came up with the idea for a platform to translate sign language. “I've always been super interested in a better education system for everyone, especially in my country,” he says. “I wanted to do something through technology that would help.”
In just a few months, he developed the artificial intelligence technology needed to translate American Sign Language (ASL) in real time. It's basically a speech to text app for sign language. Here, hand movements are the speech.
The hardest part, Nand says, was figuring how to approach the problem. At times, he says, “I didn't know what to do.” When that happened, he would go to sleep. “In the morning, I tried again.”
Nand Vinchhi demonstrates (演示) how his translation tech works in his bedroom, where he spent long hours constructing the computer program. A camera identifies colorful, key points on arms and hands as they move. An algorithm matches these movements to words in American Sign Language, which are then spoken aloud.
For Nand, “sleeping on it” paid off. He decided to recognize body parts important in signing. This might be individual fingertips, for example. Using a machine learning program, he then taught a computer to identify those key points in videos he took. The computer would compile data from many frames of the video. This created a dataset. Nand gathered lots of these datasets and then used an algorithm to look for differences between them. That allowed him to compare a sign to any of some 100 ASL words in that dataset.
His system now translates signs with 90.4 percent accuracy (准确度), he reported at the competition. The delay from signing to translation is only about three tenths of a second. That's only a tenth of a second longer than the typical speech delay in video calls. The teen now plans to increase the accuracy and words available in the dataset.
8.Why did Nand develop the system
A.To show his talent.
B.To help others.
C.To win an award.
D.To develop his interest.
9.What's Nand Vinchhi's invention
A.A device. B.A language.
C.An app. D.An algorithm.
10.What can we learn about Nand's system
A.It is already widely used.
B.It is exactly in real time.
C.It is better than video calls.
D.It still needs some improvement.
11.What contributes to Nand Vinchhi's success
A.His perseverance. B.Help from family.
C.Enough money. D.Rich experience.

Flowing through winding streets of London were smells, so common during the Great Plague (瘟疫) of the 17th century that they almost meant the plague itself, historians said. For hundreds of years, people believed that disease was spread not through tiny drops or insect bites, but through taking in unpleasant smells. To purify the air around them, they would burn rosemary and hot tar.
Now, as the world faces another widespread outbreak, a team of historians and scientists from six European countries is seeking to identify and categorize the most common smells of daily life across Europe from the 16th century to the early 20th century and to study what changes in smells over time reveal about society.
The project will search through more than 250,000 images and thousands of texts, including medical textbooks, novels and magazines in seven languages. Researchers will use machine learning and AI to analyze references to smells. Once they are cataloged, researchers, working with chemists and perfumers, will re create roughly 120 smells with the hope that museums will incorporate some of them into exhibits to make visits more immersive (沉浸式的) or memorable to museum goers. The use of smells in exhibits could also make museums more accessible for blind people and those with limited sight, historians said.
“With smell, you can open up questions about national culture, global culture and differences between communities,” said Dr Inger Leemans, a professor of cultural history at Vrije University Amsterdam. He said that introducing smells into museums or classrooms leads people to open up in discussions in ways they do not always do when discussing other issues of national identity. “It is such an open topic and what we want to do is think about how we can bring history to the nose.”
12.What does the writer intend to do by Paragraph 1
A.Introduce the topic.
B.Put forward his argument.
C.Voice his opinion.
D.Offer detailed information.
13.Why does the team carry out the project
A.To study the effects of smells.
B.To develop a cure for plagues.
C.To find out the causes of the disease.
D.To help us learn about the past.
14.What does the underlined word “incorporate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Include. B.Break.
C.Change. D.Create.
15.What's Dr Inger Leemans' attitude towards the project
A.Sceptical. B.Ambiguous.
C.Supportive. D.Negative.
