I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
describe qualities of a good friend in English;
know the features of a diary entry such as the text type, the format and the language;
master the skill of writing a diary entry about what makes a good friend;
polish up writing through cooperation in a group.

Step 1 Lead-in
Q1. Do you have a good friend in your class Who is he/she?
Q2. Why you two become good friends Does he/she have some good qualities that attract you
Can you use some adjectives to describe him/her

Step 2 Reading
Read Patrick’s diary entry about what makes a good friend and answer the following questions.
1. What's the topic of this diary entry
2. What qualities form the basis of a friendship
3. What is the format of a diary entry

Step 3 Speaking
Besides what Patrick mentioned, what other qualities should a good friend have
Brainstorm the adjectives or phrases for important qualities of a good friend as many as possible.

Step 4 Discussion
In pairs, describe qualities of a good friend.
Introduce the structure of each paragraph: topic sentence + supporting sentences
Examples
Example 1: In my opinion, a good friend should be forgiving. Take my experience as an example. I have a best friend called Jenny. Once I made a terrible mistake of losing Jenny's notebook, but she didn’t blame me, but forgave me.
Example 2: I think good friends should be honest. A good friend is like a mirror and lets you know what is happening. For instance, when I was upset that I got a low mark in Maths, my best friend reminded me that I had spent too much time playing games.

Friendship is very important to me. In my opinion, there are certain qualities that are very important in a friend.
