After the summer break, Delhi's children returned to school this month and found a new class added to their schedules: happiness.
It wasn't a welcome back joke. In a country where top universities require average test scores above 98 percent and where cheating on final high school exams is organized by a “mafia” that includes teachers and school officials, the Delhi government's new scheme marks a change of emphasis (强调) from student performance to well being.
“We have given best of the best graduates of ability to industry,” said Manish Sisodia, Delhi's education minister.“But have we been able to supply best of the best human beings to society, to the nation?”
Sisodia's happiness classes represent a major experiment in a country known for its overstrict, bookish education system, which has helped cement (巩固) a new middle class over the past thirty years but is also poorly thought of for encouraging rote (死记硬背的) learning and causing high pressure levels. Under the program, 100,000 Delhi students spend the first half hour of each school day without opening a textbook, learning instead through inspirational stories and activities, as well as such thinking exercises as meditation.
Some teachers, though, remain uncertain. Some of them say, the public schools are too crowded for a course based so heavily on classroom interaction (互动). Others doubt that the happiness classes can change the culturally deep rooted emphasis on exams and memorization. Geeta Gandhi Kingdon, chair of education, economics and international development at University College London, said that there haven't been any studies to value their workability.“As far as I know, in some schools they are just another box ticking exercise,” she said.
8.What's the author's purpose of writing the first paragraph
A.To tell a welcome back joke.
B.To introduce a new program.
C.To argue against the testing system.
D.To emphasize studies mixed with happiness.
9.How is the fourth paragraph mainly developed
A.By giving examples. B.By making comparisons.
C.By following time order. D.By listing data.
10.What's Geeta Gandhi Kingdon's attitude towards the effect of happiness classes
A.Confident. B.Hopeless.
C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.
11.What is the best title for this passage
A.Delhi's children return to school
B.Delhi offers “happiness” classes
C.Happiness classes become welcome in Delhi
D.Happiness classes prove another box ticking exercise
D
For many years, school children in the US have been taken on “field trips” to cultural institutions such as museums of art.Educators arrange them in the belief that schools exist not only to teach economically useful skills, but also to produce civilized young people who appreciate art and culture. While there are parents who will take their children to cultural places in their free time, there are plenty of other children who will never have this kind of opportunity unless schools offer it.So you could say that taking school students on field trips is a means of giving everyone equal access to their cultural heritage.
However, the attitude towards field trips in recent years is changing, with the number of tours organized for school groups falling significantly in museums all around the country. The most obvious reason is the issue of finance.Because there are increasing demands on their funds, after all, computers and sports facilities aren't cheap, schools are forced to make a difficult choice about how to spend the limited money they have.Faced with this dilemma, field trips are an obvious thing to cut since they are seen by many as a luxury.
Additionally, the nature of these field days is also changing.Schools increasingly use trips to amusement parks or sporting events as a treat for students rather than an opportunity for cultural learning.This_shift could have a basis in generational differences between teachers' reasons for organizing days out of school.A recent survey conducted among 500 Arkansas teachers showed that older teachers were significantly more likely to take the primary purpose of a field trip as a learning experience than younger teachers, who view it as fun.
Some evidence shows the trend of fewer trips may have a negative effect on children's development.Research led by Jay Greene at University of Arkansas found that students who received a tour of an art museum greatly improved their knowledge of art and the ability to think critically about art. They also displayed stronger historical interest and were more likely to visit cultural places in the future. The researchers warn that if schools cut field trips or switch to less educational destinations, valuable opportunities to broaden and enrich children's learning experiences are lost.
12.What is the initial purpose of field trips to cultural institutions
A.To teach students useful skills in economics.
B.To make every student exposed to art and culture.
C.To educate students to preserve cultural heritage.
D.To encourage parents to take their children there.
13.Which factor most probably leads to the trend of fewer field trips
A.The drop in school funds.
B.Students' demand for fun.
C.The dilemma of school finance.
D.Teachers' generational differences.
14.What does the underlined part “This shift” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.The switch from old generations to young generations.
B.The switch from sporting events to cultural experiences.
C.The change from an opportunity to learn to a treat to entertain.
D.The change from educational destinations to luxurious attractions.
15.What can be inferred about field trips from the research by Jay Greene
A.Students are rewarded with more cultural awareness.
B.Amusement parks enrich children's learning experiences.
C.Cutting field trips is critical to the future of the museum.
D.Field trips guarantee better future academic performance.

Shoveling (铲) snow had always been the best part about winter. Not that I thought it was fun, but my dad's reaction to a clean driveway kept me going. He hated shoveling snow more than anything. So, I took it upon myself at eight years old to do it for him.Every time I saw snow fall from the sky, I knew the universe was ready to put me to work.
I would run and put on my jacket, snow boots to prepare myself for the work ahead. But every single time, before I went outside, I would stop by my older sister's room to see if she wanted to help me.I knew she would say no, but I always asked anyway.
One day there was a lot of snow, and there was no way I would be able to clean it all by myself. It was getting dark, and I hated the thought of my dad having to shovel the snow after a long day's work.So I did the routine and knocked on my sister's door.As I expected, she gave me the same old “no”.Annoyed, I asked again.Without saying anything further, she got up, pushed me out of the room and slammed (砰地关上) the door in my face.
I stood there silently for a second. Then, I turned around, went out of the house, and set out in the cold to tackle the enemy that lay in my driveway. But I couldn't calm down.I was really angry that she would leave me to battle this alone. All I wanted was some help. The more I remembered every “no” she had ever said to me, the angrier I became.
I fought tirelessly, my short arms swinging from side to side while the wind cut against my cheeks. After one long hour, I was not even halfway done.Looking at the victorious snow, I thought of Dad's disappointment.

根据第二段中的“He asked the boy the reason, and then shared the story on the Internet.”以及第三段中的“The mailman then asked his friends if they could give some books to the boy.”
由最后一段中的“As far as I know, in some schools they are just another boxticking exercise”可知,她对课程的效果表示怀疑。

根据第二段中的“The most obvious reason is the issue of finance ...Faced with this dilemma, field trips are an obvious thing to cut”可知,造成实地考察减少最明显的原因是学校的资金困境。
17.选A 根据上文“So, try joining a sports team, picking up a paintbrush, or taking part in a local charity event.”

20.选B 根据上文“Experiential appreciation transforms learning from a task to be completed into a journey to be treasured.”
21.选B 根据后文“I didn't expect it.”
22.选A 根据后文“Calling herself ‘Carthage's biggest fan’, Amy Malczewski has a deep________ to Carthage College.”

Feeling bitter and desperate, I couldn't stop my tears. My inner anger drove me to the edge of madness.I rushed to my sister's room, expressing my longburied dissatisfaction towards her absence from my snow shoveling experiences. Then,I stopped my accusation, still weeping.“Please don't cry.Every teardrop of yours is a reminder of how selfish I was.I'm sorry.Would you give me another chance to go shoveling with you?” said my sister in a soft voice.
My sister and I went outside.I wasn't alone in this battle any more.By the time we finished, my back was aching.I was so exhausted that I couldn't want to move any more. However, I was extremely happy. That was the beauty of companionship. And from the bright smile blooming on my sister's face, I could tell that she felt the same way.Arm in arm, we walked inside as darkness fell, waiting for our father to come home.
