Marvelous Scenic Walks Near London
There are plenty of walking routes in London. If you fancy something a bit more rural, then the green and pleasant land has plenty to offer.
Goring Gap and the Thames Path
If you're in the mood for a gentle rural walk, the Thames Path is far from boring. The 5 mile footpath follows the curve of the river, winding past wildflower meadows (草地).
Post walk pub: Pangbourne's seventeenth century pub The Swan serves high end dishes. Bag a table on the riverside or keep toasty by one of its open fires.
Box Hill
To admire this spot's rural views, first you've got to jump across 17 stepping stones and climb 272 steps to the top of Box Hill, where the path begins. The total distance is 6.8 miles.
Post walk pub: The cavernous Tree on Box Hill has an attractive menu and huge beer garden, or sample a glass of Juniper Hill at Denbies Winerie.
A South Downs Ridge (山脊)
If you've already done the classic Seven Sisters clifftop walk or can't face all those hills, this is a long but lovely alternative. The route covering 14.3 miles snakes along a ridge and a river valley.
Post walk pub: There are always 10 real beers at the old school pub The Wellington.
Chess Valley in the Chilterns
Chess Valley in the Chiltern Hills isn't home to any chess masters, but it used to produce a kind of water plant. This walk of 4.9 miles follows the river, winding through rolling meadows and woods.
Post walk pub: The George & Dragon is a simple old coaching pub on the High Street with a log fire, real beers and giant burgers.

When I was a teen of 16 years old, I used to make more friends because of my outgoing nature. But unfortunately, I also had the most misunderstandings with them. However, I have not lost any of my friends over these disagreements.
Once I bought a few books to read in my free time during the summer vacation at high school. One evening during the vacation, two of my friends visited my home. After having some small talk, one of them started looking at my library that I had built since my childhood. He picked up one of the books that I had just started reading in the morning. It was Thomas, one of my best friends in high school. I helped him a lot with his mathematics for the exam before the summer vacation.
The disagreement with him began when he wanted to take the book home. The book named An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser was his first choice. I tried to make him realize that I had just started reading it before they arrived at my home and had just finished one fourth of the book. But it seemed that he was also crazy about the book. He was determined to take it. Samuel, the other friend of mine sat quietly and saw us argue with each other.
The argument continued for about 15 minutes, and I tried to ask him to take some other books. He looked sad, saying that after he started reading the story, he really didn't want to miss the chance to complete the book. Finally, I gave up and let him take the book on one condition: he should return the book just after he finished reading it and also would not lend it to someone else (he had lost most of his books lending them to others) as he did earlier with my books.
4.What happened to Thomas soon after he arrived at the author's home
A.He thought of a children's book.
B.He argued with Samuel over a book.
C.He was attracted to one of the author's books.
D.He remembered leaving his book in the library.
5.Why did the author want to continue reading An American Tragedy
A.He enjoyed it very much.
B.He was a fan of the writer.
C.He read it for the final exam.
D.He planned to research into it.
6.How did the author solve the disagreement with Thomas
A.He told him the story of the book.
B.He decided to lend him the book.
C.He gave him another book by the same writer.
D.He let him look through the book before leaving.
7.What can we say about Thomas
A.He doesn't have any friends.
B.He is good at mathematics.
C.He always keeps his word.
D.He doesn't give up easily.
C
I've kept many of my childhood friendships so far. But as we grew up, some of them moved to other cities and those who remained in my city have jobs and families. Planning our schedules was challenging. I had to find a new way to make friends. So I asked relationship experts (专家) for their suggestions.
First, consider what's keeping you from expanding (拓展) your friendships. “We can give it different names, like the fear of not being liked, or the fear of doing it wrong, or the fear of being judged,” says Shasta Nelson, a friendship expert. “Underneath all of that is the fear of being rejected (拒绝).”
When you know what's holding you back, you can take steps to open yourself up to new friendships. If you're looking for someone online who shares your interest like hiking, the app Meetup may be a perfect choice for you.
After hanging out online for some time, you may want to get together in person. But there's always a risk of rejection. Still, someone needs to take the first step. Coffee or lunch is a good place to start. If you both own pets, meet at a dog park.
Make safety an important thing by meeting in a public space. Although you might think you know the person online, meeting face to face requires a different level of trust. Before you agree to meet someone in person, consider how much information they've shared with you. Do you know where they work and whether they have an online footprint If you don't think you know enough about them, keep your friendship online until you feel more comfortable getting together. Don't let the rush of making a new friend cloud your better judgment.
After you've made the move from online friends to friends in real life, there's no reason you can't toggle (切换) between online and in person friendships. Keep the momentum (势头) going and stay connected with your friends.
8.Why did the author need to change her way of making friends
A.She moved to a new city.
B.She has only a few friends in her city.
C.She wants to become a relationship expert.
D.She has difficulty staying connected with her old friends.
9.What is the author's purpose in mentioning Shasta Nelson's words in Paragraph 2
A.To discuss why people are often rejected.
B.To encourage people to be open to new friends.
C.To explain why people find it hard to make new friends.
D.To prove that friendships are important in people's lives.
10.What can people do with Meetup
A.Make online friends with similar interests.
B.Learn how to get along well with others.
C.Develop various new hobbies.
D.Catch up with old friends.
11.What does the underlined word “cloud” in Paragraph 5 mean
A.Form. B.Accept.
C.Test. D.Confuse.
D
Keeping a busy social life among lots of friends may keep people thinner than spending hours doing some exercises, according to scientists. They say that socialising and meeting with friends help increase levels of brown fat in the body which burns calories (卡路里) to produce heat.
Living in an exciting social environment was found to reduce fat in mice's belly by half over four weeks, even if they ate more. US researchers say that social excitement aids weight loss by turning white fat into brown. White fat stores calories and makes us fatter, while brown burns energy to produce heat. Turning white fat into brown is extremely difficult, normally requiring long term stay in cold conditions or exciting part of the body's nervous system.
However, scientists from Ohio State University now think that having a busy social life is an even more effective way of changing white fat into brown. The team came up with their theory by studying the effects of various living environments on mice. Those, who lived alongside a greater number of mice, had more space and toys to excite themselves and then lost far more weight over the course of the study than their “couch potato” fellows.
Study author, Dr Matthew During, whose team's findings appear in the journal Cell Metabolism, said, “I'm still amazed at the degree of fat loss that occurs.” Explaining how new technology had threatened face to face socialising, he added, “It's not just a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle and high calorie foods, but an increasing lack of social activities.” Co author Dr Lei Cao said, “Loneliness is a potential factor for cancer and death; it's equal to cigarette smoking to a certain extent. Social activities are very vital.”
12.What information can we get from the first two paragraphs
A.Brown fat stores calories and makes us fatter.
B.It doesn't take long to turn white fat into brown.
C.Social excitement helps gain more weight.
D.Brown fat can burn energy to produce heat.
13.Which of the following statement does the text support
A.Levels of brown fat can be increased by socialising.
B.The mice lacking social life lose more weight.
C.The research findings haven't been published so far.
D.Dr Matthew During wasn't convinced of the result.
14.What can we conclude from the text
A.The fat in mice's belly was reduced because of the relaxing environment.
B.A sedentary lifestyle and high calorie foods influence people's social life.
C.Surfing the Internet may influence people's face to face communication.
D.Cancer and death are mainly caused for lack of social life.
15.What's the main idea of the text
A.Brown fat is beneficial to people's health.
B.Socialising is unnecessarily important in people's daily life.
C.White fat can be changed into brown fat.
D.Socialising contributes to people's losing weight.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Agatha was in the library, reading the Girl Detective series, when she noticed something strange. Her best friends, Timmy and Florence, were talking to each other in whispers while keeping a good, safe distance from her! When she waved at them, they looked away.
Things only got stranger in art class. Timmy and Florence went to sit at a different table from Agatha busy painting and glanced at her when they thought she wasn't looking.
Now, Agatha considered herself to be something of a detective. After all, she had read many detective stories for children and even had an old broken magnifying glass (放大镜) abandoned by her father. When the rest of the class went out for lunch, she slipped to Timmy and Florence's table and examined it carefully with the magnifying glass.
There was paint, and red and pink construction paper. What could they be doing This was definitely a mystery that needed solving!
After lunch Timmy and Florence chatted to her as if nothing was going on, but they kept smiling at her in a slightly strange way. Of course, Agatha could have asked them what they were up to, and they might have told her — but she wouldn't have a chance to become a detective!
On the way home from school, Florence and her mum happened to walk ahead of Agatha and her mum. Agatha saw them go into the bookshop. Strange, again. Florence didn't read much — no matter how many detective stories Agatha recommended to her!
The next day at school, Agatha kept an eye on her friends and tried to work out their mystery, but they seemed determined to keep things secret. She asked them if they would like to play with her after school, but they said they couldn't because they were busy. Even more mysterious ...
When Agatha's mum came to pick her up after school, she was so lost in the unsolved mystery that she hardly noticed her busy father was coming along, which was unusual. When they arrived home, her father said she could go into the living room.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。
Opening the door of the living room, Agatha heard voices shout from darkness, “SURPRISE!”

After eating the cake, Agatha got down to the business of opening her birthday presents.

第二节
参考范文:
Opening the door of the living room, Agatha heard voices shout from darkness, “SURPRISE!” When she entered the darkened living room, the lights came on suddenly. Her best friends Timmy and Florence were there, grinning! On the table were a cake with candles and a pile of presents. Mum and Dad followed her into the living room and lit the candles, saying, “Happy Birthday, dear. You were so distracted by the mystery to be solved as to forget today is your birthday! Now, blow the candles, make a wish and enjoy the cake.”
After eating the cake, Agatha got down to the business of opening her birthday presents. The first gift was the big red and pink birthday card with “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” written on it in Timmy and Florence's childish handwriting. “We hope you like the card we made for you!” said Timmy, and Florence added, “We also bought the latest Sherlock Holmes Detective series for you!” Agatha hugged her friends in appreciation of their surprise gifts. Mum and Dad handed her a brand new magnifying glass in place of the old broken one. Agatha might not have solved the mystery, but it was still a wonderful birthday party!
