Here are the introductions and achievements of four scientists.
J ns Jacob Berzelius
J ns Jacob Berzelius was a Swedish chemist, often referred to as one of the founders of modern chemistry. He developed a system of chemical symbols, which laid the foundation for the establishment of the modern periodic table. Berzelius also made important discoveries in the field of electrochemistry.
Niels Henrik David Bohr
Niels Henrik David Bohr was a Danish physicist. He proposed the atomic (原子的) model known as the Bohr model, which explained the behavior of electrons moving in fixed energy levels or orbits around the atomic nucleus. His model helped explain the spectra of elements and laid the groundwork for further developments in atomic physics.
Robert Boyle
Robert Boyle, born in Ireland, was regarded as one of the founders of modern chemistry, known for Boyle's law. Boyle's law describes the relationship between the pressure and volume (体积) of a gas at constant temperature. Boyle's work laid the foundation for the modern understanding of gas behavior and promoted the development of scientific experimental methods.
William Lawrence Bragg
William Lawrence Bragg was a British physicist born in Australia who made significant contributions to X ray crystallography (晶体学). Together with his father William Henry Bragg, he developed the famous Bragg's law. This discovery revolutionized the field of crystallography and paved the way for determining the atomic and molecular structures of various substances, including DNA and proteins.

Wanda Smith always wanted to be a school teacher but sometimes meeting life's demanding realities could mean a dream delayed. A mother of three, Smith also cared for her mom. While squarely shouldering her family responsibilities, she took jobs as bus monitor and custodian for Brenham Independent School District in Texas. The hours were tiring, but rather than let her dream die, at age 37, with the support and encouragement of her husband, she added night classes to her schedule. Nine years on, she finally graduated with a bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State University. She was a certified teacher at last.
Smith's story came full circle when she was hired as a first grade teacher back at Brenham Elementary School. “When I stand in front of my classroom, I am living my dream.” Smith said during a TODAY show. In 2021, as some of her students struggled to meet the demands of distance learning, Smith stepped up to the challenge. Noting that many of the kids she teaches came from single parent families, she began delivering packets of schoolwork to them at home. It's no wonder Smith's kids adored her. In a special surprise ceremony, they shouted their praise and held up big colorful signs declaring their devotion.
The feeling was repeated by Brenham's mayor, Milton Tate Jr., who officially declared May 4, 2021 as “Be the Best You Can Be” Wanda Smith Day. The phrase was also carved on a schoolyard bench, and in addition, a scholarship for up and coming teachers at Sam Houston State has been established in her name.
Smith's life is an example as well as an inspiration. By always trying to be the best she could be, with hard work and the strong will, she graduated from cleaning classrooms to leading classrooms.

A.Her heavy family burden.
B.Her strong love for her mother.
C.The lack of family support.
D.The demanding academic requirements.

6.Which of the following facts shows Smith's influence beyond her school
A.A day was celebrated nationwide in her name.
B.Her name was carved on a schoolyard bench.
C.Colorful signs were held by her students.
D.A scholarship was created in her honor.
7.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To stress the importance of setting up a dream.
B.To advocate lifelong learning by introducing Smith's story.
C.To show how Smith achieved her best with heart and devotion.
D.To illustrate how Smith's experience inspired the people around.

The reason why dominant (占支配地位的) men always seem to rise to the top has been uncovered. Researchers say they are able to make decisions far faster than those with nondominant personalities. It could explain why so many top CEOs and politicians are known for their dominant personalities.
The study found high dominance men respond faster in situations where a choice is needed, regardless of social context. Promptness (敏捷) to respond in high dominance men was accompanied by a noticeably amplified brain signal. In addition, when the researchers analyzed the EEG (脑电图) images of the high dominance participants, they identified a higher activity in areas of the brain associated with emotion and behavior, compared to low dominance participants.
This promptness in decision making can act as a biomarker for social personalities. “Dominance itself depends partly on the ability to make decisions faster than others. This allows the individual to act first in social situations, which might result in an evolutionary advantage,” the team wrote.
They now hope to link these reading to roles such as CEOs, and to find out if the same differences happen in female and children. “In the future, it will be important to find out whether even stronger brain signals are observed in particularly dominant individuals, such as CEOs,” said Carmen Sandi of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne.
She added, “It will also be relevant to understand whether these differences in promptness to respond and brain signals are also observed in women that differ in dominance and whether they are already present in children. Our findings may open a new research approach using EEG signatures as a measure for social dominance.”
The study involved 240 male students at the University of Lausanne who were sorted into high or low dominance groups by a standard “dominance scoring” questionnaire proved in many former studies.
8.What makes dominant people stand out
A.Their wiser decisions.
B.Their kind personalities.
C.Their high social status.
D.Their rapidity of responding.
9.Which word can replace the underlined word “amplified” in Paragraph 2
A.Affected. B.Adjusted.
C.Enhanced. D.Controlled.
10.What will the researchers use the findings to do
A.Save people's life.
B.Check on more people.
C.Test the participants' brain.
D.Show the effect of dominance.
11.What can be inferred about the study from the text
A.It used previous research findings.
B.It involved some women and children.
C.It showed how people became CEOs.
D.It corrected people's ideas of dominance.

Failure is an unavoidable part of life. Though science has named some life skills that promise success, we're told over and over again that no great success was ever achieved without failure — or many failed attempts. One of life's most important lessons, therefore, has to be how to handle failure best. But what is the message
For starters, ignore advice from anyone that tells you, “Don't beat yourself up about it,” no matter how well meaning they are. According to the new research from the University of Kansas, we absolutely should be beating ourselves up when we fail. Marketing professor Noelle Nelson and her team found that the more emotional a person's response is to failure, the more likely they are to achieve better results the next time they deal with a related task.
The researchers carried out two experiments in which undergraduate students were required to perform specific tasks. In one experiment, they were asked to search online for a squeezer and report the lowest price they could find with the possibility of winning a $50 cash prize. However, the task was controlled, and all participants were told (by a computer) that the lowest price was $3.27 less than their reported price. Consequently, no participant won the cash prize. When the results were announced, some participants were asked to focus on their emotional response, and others on their cognitive (认知的) response. During the next similar task, participants who focused on their emotional response to failure made more effort than those who focused on a cognitive response.
Everybody has their own unique challenges, responsibilities, duties, and projects, but these findings are related to all of us. Your personal failure may be a cake that fails to rise, a presentation that goes wrong, or a deadline that gets missed — it doesn't matter. What matters is how you react to it. Instead of thinking about the failure, let yourself feel bad about it. Then follow this advice on how to bounce back after your failure.
12.What's the relationship between failure and success
A.Failure promises success.
B.Failure is the key to success.
C.Failure does damage to success.
D.Well handled failure is good for success.
13.Why does the writer support beating oneself up when failing
A.It's a well meaning suggestion for failure.
B.It's been proved by the study of a university.
C.Being emotional is good for one's future success.
D.It can make people less emotional about failure.
14.What is the purpose of the two experiments
A.To test the participants' abilities to search online.
B.To improve the participants' cognitive response.
C.To teach the participants to avoid failures.
D.To test the benefit of emotional response to failure.
15.Which can be the best title for the passage
A.Personal Failure Is a Cake That Fails to Appear
B.The Most Productive Way to Handle Any Failure
C.Different Methods to Change Failure into Success
D.The Reason Why Failure Is the Mother of Success

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I always prided myself on my sharp tongue and witty (妙趣横生的) retorts (反驳), whether in class debates or casual arguments. So when it came time to represent my school in the national debate series, I was naturally very confident. But this challenge would turn out to be one of my life's most important lessons.
The run up to the finals was a breeze for my team. We were all good speakers who had the benefit of an experienced teacher who trained us well. But in the team, I was undoubtedly the most outstanding speaker. In each of the rounds that I debated in, I had always been selected as the best speaker. This meant that my confidence was at an all time high by the time we found ourselves with one week left to train before the finals. I had no reason to even think that I would not be voted the overall best speaker for the debate series.
But then I began to grow arrogant. I looked down on my teammates' pathetic retorts and poor debating style. I thought myself a natural debater being pulled down by their bad performance. In response, I became sloppy (不认真的). I even began missing practices, much to the panic of my teammates and the frustration (沮丧) of my teacher. They could only hope I'd pull through in the end as I proved irreplaceable.
The day of the finals came. I was nearly skipping to the venue, ready to finally show off my debating prowess (杰出的技能). But the reality was not something I could have ever imagined. Due to my repeated absences, our teamwork was so bad that even our school supporters were shamed into silence. There was a rift (分歧) in the team. When it was my turn to conclude as speaker, an expectant hush (寂静) fell over the hall. I was the one meant to win the prized title of Overall Best Speaker.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。
As I launched into my speech, everything suddenly went very wrong.

Suddenly, a teammate grabbed my hand.

第一节
参考范文:
My points of view on success
What is success I think success is to achieve the goal you want to achieve. As we all know, we have no choice but to work hard.
As a student, only by discovering what we do best can we hope to reach our goals and truly make a difference. Don't be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success, but repetition is the father of success. Do keep on beginning.
My goal is to enter the ideal university. I believe that if I try, I will succeed in the future.
第二节
参考范文:
As I launched into my speech, everything suddenly went very wrong. I was hesitant in my explanations, realizing too late that I sounded incoherent; my speech did not follow logically from my team's other points. The puzzled looks on the judges' faces almost drove me to tears. I realized my overconfidence only too late. After I spoke my piece, the tears finally broke their banks and burned on my cheeks. I knew that we had lost the title.
Suddenly, a teammate grabbed my hand. She comforted me, saying that it was alright. Two other teammates came over to hug me. I continued sobbing the word “sorry” to them, feeling even worse now as they repaid my irresponsibility with kindness. When we were called to receive the prize for first runner up, we went up together as a team and bravely lifted the award. I finally realized what it was like to be part of a team. On that day, I learned that no man is an island.
