Lakshmi spends hours every day digging up large yams (ft药) that grow under the soil. Some yams weigh 5 kg and are almost as tall as she is. Lakshmi says this work is very hard.
Lakshmi lives in Kerala, a state in southern India. She is part of an all-women group called Noorang. The women in Noorang belong to one of Kerala’s oldest tribes (部落). They are trying to save yams. These yams have grown on their land for many years.
But yams are no longer a main diet among tribal communities in Kerala due to their rapidly changing lifestyle. Young people have many other foods to eat, like rice and wheat. They do not think yams are special anymore.
Bad weather also hurts yam harvests. In the past, floods and landslides caused many yams to die. Recently, there was a sharp decline in lands dedicated to yam production in Kerala, with many of these being changed to the more rubber cultivation instead.
“The women grow yams to feed their families and to keep these rare yams from disappearing,” says Lakshmi. “We believe yams can cure some illnesses,” says Shantha, another member of Noorang. “Many mothers here think yams are good for the stomach.”
Since 2022, the Noorang group has brought back 180 kinds of wild yams. They have fifteen kinds of wild yams, three kinds of elephant yams, eight kinds of Colocasias, seven kinds of sweet potatoes, and one kind of Chinese potato. “Our goal is to save rare yams and grow more,” says Sarasu, a member of Noorang.
What is the Noorang’s main task

In this age of rapid AI technological advancement, most people would know the name NVIDIA, a prominent (著名的) US technology company.
For a long time, NVIDIA has been dominating the graphics cards (显卡) industry with its
advanced computer chips. Earlier this year, it became the first chipmaker to have a market worth of 2 trillion dollars (about 14.5 trillion yuan), showing fast growth due to its focus on developing chips specifically designed for running AI models.
What is an AI chip
The uniqueness of AI chips comes from the GPU, or graphics processing unit, which is the core (核心的) component of a graphics card. It was developed by NVIDIA in the late 1990s.
Initially designed for video game development, it presents surprising computing power. Unlike a central processing unit (CPU), which can only process one piece of data at a time, a GPU can process many pieces of data at once, which is called “parallel processing (并行处理)”. This allows a GPU to handle complex tasks, such as rendering (渲染) high-resolution graphics and processing large amounts of data, much more efficiently than a CPU.
Therefore, gamers buy GPUs to get a better video game experience since GPUs can help create 3D characters and scenes that run smoothly and look realistic. People also saw the value of GPUs in solving complex calculations required for cryptocurrency (加密货币) mining. That’s why the price of GPUs doubled or even tripled between 2019 and 2021.
Nowadays, as GPUs prove to be key to AI model training, more advanced AI chips are being made for specialized AI panies such as OpenAI and Google use AI chips to speed up and enhance (增强) their AI, machine learning, and deep learning algorithms (算法). These chips are especially useful for improving the performance of large language models. With their excellent ability to handle numerous pieces of data at a time, the sky’s the limit for AI chips.
For everyday people, AI chips in our phones allow AI processing to happen on the device rather than in the cloud. This makes data processing faster, safer, and more energy-efficient.
What does the underlined word “dominating” in paragraph 2 most likely mean
Promoting. B.Controlling.
C.Learning about. D.Paying attention to.
What makes GPUs important for AI model training
Their availability at low prices.
Their capacity for storing large amounts of data.
Their ability to process multiple pieces of data at once.
Their performance in cryptocurrency mining.
What is the main focus of paragraph 5
The high demand for CPUs.
Possible applications of GPUs.
Why GPUs are popular.
How GPUs perform complex calculations.
How do AI chips contribute to the development of AI technologies
They boost CPU performance.
They improve the gaming experience.
They increase the value of cryptocurrencies.
They enhance deep learning algorithms.

Birdcages are the treasure of Kala village
Birds have been closely related to big harvests in the culture of the Miao ethnic group. The Miao people have loved birds for generations. That’s why people see delicate (精致的) birdcages hanging in front of many households in the Miao villages.

cage-weaving craft there. Wang Yuhe, her father-in-law and a Kala birdcage-making inheritor, taught her everything he knew about the craft. As a member of the younger generation, Wang Qiu injects vigor (活力) into the centuries-old craft.

raise birds has been decreasing, so has been the need for birdcages,” said Wang. “So, I decided to combine closely art with everyday life, meeting the needs of a broader range of consumers.” Wang designs and makes everyday items, from bookshelves and lampshades (灯罩) to graceful earrings in the shape of Kala birdcages.
In her efforts to show Kala birdcages to a wider audience, Wang has been sharing videos of her skills on social media. “I hope that my videos can attract more people and get them to learn about the fascinating skills of Kala village as well as the splendid culture of the Miao people.” 32.According to the article, why do Miao people hang birdcages in front of their households

As I stepped off the plane in Yunnan, I was about to begin an unforgettable experience: the Water-Splashing Festival.
On the morning of the festival, people were busy getting prepared. Their faces lit with expectation. I, a foreigner, really stood out in the street. A passing vendor (小贩) noticed my out-of-place expression and flashed me a wide smile. 36.
Walking through the lively streets of Xishuangbanna with excitement, I saw a group of local children approaching me, their eyes shining with kindness. They handed me a traditional Dai hat and in that simple gesture, I felt a connection to this land and its people. 37. Such a moment highlights how the Water-Splashing Festival is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of warmth and openness.
Soon, the min event, the water splashing, began. People of all ages, armed with water guns and buckets, filled the streets. 38. The thought of getting completely wet in front of so many strangers made me nervous. But then, a group of local boys targeted me with their water guns. Before I knew it, I got wet through, and a burst of laughter escaped my lips. In that moment, all my hesitations faded away. 39. But for me, it was also a way to wash away the distance between myself and the people around me. As the sun began to set, the festival finally ended. But the memories created, the friendship formed, the cultural understanding gained would last a lifetime.
40. It caught me that by being brave enough to explore new cultures, we open ourselves up to a world of possibilities. We enrich our lives in ways we could never have imagined, filling them laughter, warmth, and the magic of cultural connection.
At first, I was a bit hesitant.
That warmth and friendliness immediately put me at ease.

Tom and John were classmates and deskmates. Tom was a diligent student who always took his studies seriously, while John was the opposite. John rarely studied and often relied on others to help him out. He would constantly ask Tom for answers during exams or copy his homework, and Tom had always found excuses to avoid helping him cheat.
One day, as the final exam was approaching, John nervously turned to Tom and said, “Hey, Tom, you know I’m not good at studying. Could you help me cheat during the exam I promise I’ll make it up to you.”
Tom was taken aback. He had always believed in the importance of honesty and hard work. He knew that cheating was wrong, but he also didn’t want to hurt John’s feelings. After a moment of hesitation, Tom replied, “John, I understand that the final exam can be stressful, but cheating is not the right way to deal with it. We should be honest and work hard to earn our grades.”
John looked disappointed but didn’t say anything. The day of the exam arrived, and as expected, John struggled. Reading Time VS Screen Time Before Bed Good evening, honorable judges and fellow students!
Today, I want to discuss a crucial choice we face every night: reading books versus scrolling on phones before bed.Scientific studies prove that reading not only reduces stress significantly but also improves next-day concentration to a great extent, which helps us relax, enhances memory, and
prepares our minds for learning. In contrast, smartphones emit harmful blue light, delaying skip by an average of 40 minutes. Excessive screen time damages eyesight, weakens mental health, and even lowers cognitive abilities.
Let's make a wiser decision tonight: Replace 30 minutes of screen time with reading. Small changes bring great rewards-better sleep, sharper minds, and brighter futures!
Thank you!

He realized that he had put himself in this position by not studying, and he couldn' t blame anyone else for it. When the exam finally ended, John sighed heavily and sat in his chair. He knew he had failed, but he also knew that cheating wouldn' t make him any smarter.
From that day on, John began to take his studies more seriously. He approached Tom after school and asked for help, promising to put in the effort. Tom agreed, and they started studying together every evening. John slowly improved as he began to understand the material better. He even attended extra tutoring sessions and spent more time reviewing his notes. By the time the next exam came around, John was much more confident. He managed to pass with a good grade, and he felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. He realized that hard work and honesty were far more rewarding than cheating. Tom was proud of John' s progress, and their friendship grew stronger as they continued to support each other.
