Ask The Expert Dr.ALEJANDRO RIVAS Struggling to hear each day, even when using powerful hearing aids?
Dr.ALEJANDRO RIVAS, a cochlear (耳蜗) implant surgeon and medical advisor to Cochlear, answers questions about cochlear implants and how they are different from hearing aids.
Now more than ever, communication and connection are important for maintaining relationships with family, friends and community.Whether it happens suddenly or gradually over time, hearing loss can affect you physically and emotionally.Addressing your hearing loss has the potential to transform your life.Cochlear implants work differently than hearing aids.Rather than amplifying (放大) sound, they use state of the art electronic components and software to help provide access to the sounds you have been missing.
Q: How are cochlear implants different than hearing aids
Hearing aids help many people by making the sounds they hear louder.Unfortunately, as hearing loss progresses, sounds may not only need to be louder, they may need to be clearer.Cochlear implants can help give you that clarity, especially in noisy environments.
Q: Are cochlear implants a proven solution
Cochlear hearing implant technology is very reliable. In fact, it has been around for 40 years and Cochlear has provided more than 600,000 implantable hearing devices.
Q: Is it major surgery
No, not at all.The procedure is often done on an outpatient basis and typically takes just a couple of hours.
Q: Are cochlear implants covered by Medicare
Yes.Medicare and most private insurance plans routinely cover cochlear implants.
Call 800 610 4901 or visit www.Cochlear.us/Rdigest to find a Hearing Implant Specialist near you and get a free guide about cochlear implants.

The structure of DNA plays an important role in medicine and biology. But you may not know that its founder is a female scientist and goes through a lot on her way to make scientific research.Rosalind Franklin was born in London, England on July 25th, 1920.On April 16th, 1958, at age 38, she died from cancer.Franklin was responsible for much of the research and discovery work that led to the understanding of the structure of DNA.
Franklin was interested in science and attended one of the few girls' schools in London that taught physics and chemistry. When she was 15, she decided to become a scientist. Her father was decidedly against higher education for women and wanted her to be a social worker.Franklin's aunt decided to support her and she agreed to pay for her full schooling.Within weeks, Franklin's aunt got her mother to support her going to college, too.Months later, Franklin's aunt and mother got her father to agree with it.Franklin was very excited that she was going to college and did a good job in her study.
After her graduation from college, Franklin started her research on DNA.However, there were so many quarrels in her life because Franklin and her research partner did not get along.Franklin and her partner's arguments set them back on the study of DNA quite a bit.At the time they were working against another pair to find the story of DNA.Because of Franklin and her partner's fights, another pair found the structure of DNA first and won the Nobel Prize for it four years after Franklin died. Many scientists felt sorry for her early death and thought that the winners had stolen her research about DNA.

For the Greek philosopher Celsus, red wine could be used to treat endless diseases, from tiredness to fever and coughs. But despite its convenient healing powers, the grape, he told his faithful readers, could bring about headaches. Now, researchers believe they have found the reason why red wine causes such headaches.
“We think we are finally on the right track toward explaining this old mystery,” said Morris Levin, the director of the Headache Center at the University of California, San Francisco.“The next step is to test it scientifically on people who develop these headaches.” Red wine headaches are different from hangover (宿醉) the morning after the night before.Rather than coming on after a long session, they can strike 30 minutes after drinking only one small glass.
The researchers ran lab tests on more than a dozen chemicals in red wine. One stood out.Quercetin (槲皮素), found almost only in red wine, turned out to be particularly effective at blocking the enzyme (酶) that breaks down alcohol. This could be key to solving the mystery. With the important enzyme suppressed,_alcohol builds up in the bloodstream. At high levels, this causes headaches, red faces and sweating.
According to the researchers, when some people drink red wine with even small amounts of quercetin they can develop a headache. Why some are more affected than others is unclear. The team now hopes to find out the effects of red wines with different quercetin levels.
Grapes make quercetin in response to sunlight, so grapes grown in plenty of sunlight can have five times more quercetin than other reds.Processes like fining and ageing also affect quercetin levels.“It will be potentially very helpful for people who drink red wine to be able to choose wines less likely to cause headaches,” Levin said.“Also, winemakers may use our findings to reduce quercetin in their wines.”
8.In what way are red wine headaches different from those of hangover
A.They come on after a long time.
B.They affect wine drinkers equally.
C.They occur within a short time.
D.They produce different symptoms.

A.The cure for wine headaches.
B.The reduction of quercetin.
C.The effects of quercetin amount.
D.The way to solve hangover.
11.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.The background of the research.
B.The importance of processes.
C.The way to produce quercetin.
D.The applications of the findings.

Slobodchikoff, a biologist who has spent years working to better understand the calls of dogs, used that knowledge to help people who were having trouble with their pets.
A man reported his dog wanted to bite him.So Slobodchikoff went to the man's house. He watched as the owner walked over to the dog, towered over the pet and then said, “Good dog!” in a low pitched (音高) voice.“The dog ran into a corner,” Slobodchikoff recalled. The owner had scared the dog.Slobodchikoff recommended that the man should do the opposite. The owner took that advice — and ended up developing a great relationship with his pet.
Not everyone has the time to study dog communications or the money to bring in an expert.Slobodchikoff thinks tech could help.He thinks a cell phone app or device that you could point at a dog. This would record video and audio (音频) of a dog's behavior and then upload it.An artificial intelligence (AI) system would later analyze it.
The AI “would translate this for you into English or any other language,” says Slobodchikoff. The result, he explains, may be something like “‘I'm hungry’ or ‘I need to go outside to pee’ or ‘I want to go for a walk.’”
To train the AI system, Slobodchikoff planned to get data directly from pet dogs, but for some reason, he hasn't yet restarted the project to date, but hopes to soon.
Search an app store for a pet translator and you'll find plenty. Some are completely unscientific and silly.MeowTalk, however, is a cat translation app based on an AI model. In 2021, its creators reported that the AI model achieved 90 percent accuracy at identifying nine different emotional states in meows. These included angry, happy, hunting, pain and rest. The app picks conversational phrases based on these emotions, like “nice to see you,” or “let me rest.”
People who have tried the app say it doesn't always work well. But better translations of barks and meows may be just around the corner.
12.What might the man do to calm the dog
A.Tower over the pet dog.
B.Follow the dog to the corner.
C.Give the dog delicious food.
D.Speak in a high pitched voice.
13.What is the function of the AI system in Slobodchikoff's view
A.To analyze data.
B.To train a dog.
C.To record a dog's behavior.
D.To collect data from a dog.

Tom had a lot of difficulties in the new environment. He didn't like the food in England.Nobody could forecast the weather in Newcastle. He had to start learning the second foreign language in his new school.Pocket money was not enough as usual.Almost every subject was a challenge for him. Most importantly, he had no friends. It seemed nobody knew him and he knew nobody in the school.
On an early summer evening, when Tom was going home alone from school as usual, a man called him from behind.Tom turned around and saw Andy, his PE teacher, standing in front of him.
“You know, the school will have a swimming competition next month. There will be all kinds of races. Will you participate?” Andy asked.
Tom took a look at Andy with doubt and answered, “You sure Me No, I won't.I can swim, but I'm slower than a snail.”
Andy smiled and then said, “Yes.Indeed.You are, in breaststroke (蛙泳), in backstroke, and in butterfly, but not in freestyle. So join the freestyle race! 200 meter freestyle is the game suitable for you.”
Tom was speechless at that moment. He had never known someone in the school was observing him and caring for him.
“I don't think I can win anything,” Tom was still a little puzzled.
“But you may get more recognition and consequently you can make some friends. That is more important than prizes,” Andy responded immediately.

Dear Jenny,
How nice to hear from you! In your letter you asked me how to keep healthy.I would like to give you some advice.
As you know, we teenagers grow very fast, so we need to keep a balanced diet and have nutritious foods, such as fish, meat, and beans, especially fresh vegetables and fruits. You had better not eat too much sweet. Also, you should take physical exercise regularly instead of studying in the classroom all the time. For example, you can play basketball or swim after school. What's more, having enough sleep is very important. So I advise you to have at least eight hours of sleep every day and not to stay up too late.
Only in this way can you keep fit.

参考范文:
Every afternoon for the next month, Tom trained really hard.He darted to the school swimming pool immediately the school bell rang and kept practicing.Usually, it was not until the sun set that he stopped training, when he was worn out completely.Tough as it was, Tom never had the idea of giving up.Day by day, the swimming pool witnessed his endeavor, as well as his rapid progress. As the training went on, he gradually became skillful and confident.A few weeks later, the competition eventually arrived.Standing by the swimming pool, Tom was calmer than ever, for he firmly believed he was able to win the game.
Tom dived into the pool confidently like other competitors. He set off swiftly, weaving in the water like a flexible fish, and it was not long before other competitors were left far behind.Shortly afterwards, the audiences burst into applause when Tom first reached the edge of the swimming pool, which marked his winning the competition.Thrilled and delighted, Tom screamed out loudly, “I won the game! I made it!” It was the first time that he'd felt so excited since he arrived in England. From then on, his classmates began to make friends with him, and bright smile came back to his face. This lesson has taken root deeply in his heart: Dare to try, and you will make it eventually.
