Tom is an expert from a robotics company who can communicate smoothly with people through computers, phones, and other means. However, when facing the crowd on site, he will feel uneasy. His boss arranged for Tom to showcase to the audience the innovative work their company is doing. In response to the boss's trust in him, Tom bravely began preparing for this matter.
One day, while watching TV, he happened to see a program where the ventriloquist (腹语术者) Arthur interacted with the audience through a dummy (假人) to convey information. This gave him inspiration. The next day, he discussed his idea with his colleagues in the company and everyone supported his plan. On the day of the exhibition, they arrived at the scene early and prepared everything, although Tom was still a bit nervous.
The much anticipated presentation started. The presenter began with a light hearted joke and then proceeded to share some interesting facts about Reality Robotics Company before revealing the innovative work the company was undertaking. Throughout the presentation, there were no pauses or instances of Tom's dreaded phrase: “but what I really meant to say was.” The audience was impressed by the innovative product the presenter described and hoped for a demonstration to see how effective the new invention was. As the presentation drew to a close, the presenter said calmly and confidently, “And now I would like to share this stage with the man who invented me.”
Tom walked onto the stage, looking exactly like the presenter. The “identical twins” took the audience by surprise. Tom then spoke slowly, “What you have just witnessed is a demonstration of the latest invention from the company — a presentation robot.” Suddenly it all clicked and the audience erupted in cheers. Tom then explained how the company created such a robot and programmed it to speak. “As you could see and hear, it had the confidence I could never exhibit in such a presentation. We can model it into an exact copy of you.” The audience got excited at the prospect. The boss smiled approvingly. Maybe Tom deserved a promotion, he thought.

The British may be made fun of for their weather related small talk, but a recent study suggests that just four minutes of chatting can reveal aspects of our personality and influence subsequent social interactions.
Researchers divided 338 participants into two groups before meeting in person and asked each participant to complete a personality and IQ test. Within each group, participants were paired and either conversed by text for 4 minutes or had no contact with their partner. Participants were then required to infer aspects of their partner's personality and predict whether they would act cooperatively or selfishly in two money based strategy games.
The results showed that those who chatted scored higher in predicting their partners' IQ and personality test responses, but were also more likely to project their own personality characteristics onto their partners. “Our research suggests that in just a few minutes of small talk, we begin to form a mental model of the person we're talking to,” says Professor Sgroi.
Participants then met and played with their conversation partner or, in the case of the no contact group, met and played with strangers.
The researchers then gave each participant £20 and asked them to contribute to a joint pot (罐) shared with their partners, an experiment called the Public Goods Game.
The team says people who have chatted with their partners are more likely to correctly predict their contributions to the pot. In addition, those who chatted beforehand (事先) contributed 30% more than those who did not. The results also depended on the relationships they established through small talk.
Georgie Nightingall, founder of Trigger Conversations, says that small talk is a great way to encourage cooperation in the workplace. “People are bad at small talk because it feels like there is no end to it. It can feel awkward and pointless once you have all the information you need. While asking questions helps build relationships with people, people will be happy to have a chat if you show that you care about others. My advice is to be sincere and considerate.”
8.What does the underlined word “reveal” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Contribute to. B.Give away.
C.Limit. D.Change.
9.What helps conversation partners predict their contributions correctly
A.Their common interests and hobbies.
B.The differences of their personalities.
C.The accurate judgments of each other's IQ.
D.Their previous impressions and connections.
10.What does Nightingall suggest we do to inspire others to communicate with us
A.Avoid asking them questions.
B.Share our personal privacy.
C.Show genuine concern for them.
D.Start with our strengths and virtues.
11.What's the purpose of this text
A.To present a research outcome.
B.To describe a cultural phenomenon.
C.To assess British people's social skills.
D.To motivate people to interact by texting.

A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps; for there is a companionship of books as well as of men; and one should always live in the best company, whether it is of books or of men.
A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the most patient and cheerful companion. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness, amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting and consoling us in age.
There is an old proverb, “Love me, love my dog.” But there is more wisdom in this: “Love me, love my book.” The book is a truer and higher bond of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them. The best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comforters.
Books possess an essence of immortality. They are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author's minds, ages ago. What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page. The only effect of time has been to sift (筛选) out the bad products, for nothing in literature can long survive but what is really good.
Books introduce us into the best society; they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; we see them as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them and grieve with them. The great and good do not die, even in this world. Recorded in books, people's spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect to which one still listens.
12.According to the author, what is the difference between our books and our friends
A.Books remain patient and cheerful for a longer time.
B.Books provide comfort in old age, unlike our friends.
C.Friends can sometimes disappoint us, similar to our books.
D.Books reflect a person's character more than their friends do.
13.Why are temples and statues mentioned in paragraph 4
A.To prove the value of time.
B.To highlight the longevity of books.
C.To show people's preference for literature.
D.To emphasize the importance of ancient architecture.
14.What does the author advise readers to do
A.Become a wise man by reading.
B.Read as many classic books as we can.
C.Cherish the company of our books just like our friends.
D.Sympathize with your friends through your favorite author.
15.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A.Companionship of Books
B.Long Live Books
C.Our Best Friends
D.Love Me, Love My Book

My great grandmother Eileen is fierce, loyal and strong and a bit of a legend in her own lifetime, which now stretches to 92 years.I should add that we're not allowed to call her Gran, because she says it makes her feel old.
That summer, I lost my job and felt hopeless. One day, I paid a visit to her.She picked up a box which she placed on the coffee table.“There you go,” she said.“You do know what you're doing with these things, don't you?”
It was a new phone. Her current mobile was pretty ancient.I was amazed it was still going.
“Yes,” I said.
“Good. That's why I ask you.You young people know more about such things than us oldies. You can take it home with you and get it all set up,” she went on.“Then, when you bring it back, you can show me how to use my new phone, such as getting on the Internet, sending e mails and so on.” She smiled so sweetly that I felt a surge of love for her.
I grabbed the box and stood up.Setting up the phone would be easy.It was teaching her how to use it that may prove challenging.
The following day I headed back to my great grandmother's with the phone.“Here's your phone. It's all ready to use.”
For the next hour, I was busy setting up her passcode and fingerprint recognition, which she said was like something out of James Bond.
She chose a picture for her screen and it was all going so well until I tried to show her how to swipe (滑动屏幕).“What do you mean, swipe?” she asked. She was 92, I reminded myself. This had been tiring for her.
She pressed at the up arrow and got angry when nothing happened. When I finally got her to swipe, she didn't put the right amount of pressure on and the menu slipped away. After what seemed like hours, she threw the phone across the room and it landed on the sofa.“Take it away!” she howled.“I want my old phone back!”
I picked up the phone and was about to leave to give her time to cool down when I realized I didn't want to go home when she was angry and upset.

A Friendly Football Match Between Sister Schools
Last Friday, a friendly football match was held between our school and the British sister school. The stands around the football field were packed to full by a large group of fans!
At the beginning, the captain of our school team kicked off the match and he soon inspired his players greatly with an early goal. The British team then followed, giving a shot about twenty minutes later. The audience kept cheering for both sides, especially when two of our players stopped to tend a British player who fell suddenly. It was a very close match, and our school narrowly won by 3-2.
This activity serves as a window for us to have a glimpse of each other's extra curricular life. Both sides hope that more exchange activities like this will be held in the future to promote cultural communication.

“Come on, Eileen. One more try.” I said.“This time I'll hold your finger and show you how much pressure to use.Guess what, it took me a while to get the hang of swiping,” added I.I held her finger gently and her face lit up when the menu appeared.“I want a selfie with you.Show me how to use the camera!” My heart sank a bit, but she didn't need a lot of help and we sent her friend Emily a photo of us both laughing.“I can't wait to show everyone my new phone,” she said happily.“Thank you for your patience, Tom.”
I was not feeling so hopeless any more now.Great grandma's spirit inspired me greatly. It occurred to me that if a 92 year old lady could learn new skills, then so could I.I had no doubt that I would find something I liked even more. There must be a job out there for me somewhere and I was sure to find it.I headed for home with a smile on my face and a whole lot of love for my amazing great grandmother. My great grandmother would always be a role model for me to learn from.
