When I was a little boy growing up, my mom, dad, brothers and I lived in my nana's old house. It was surrounded by four huge vegetable gardens. And around the house so many flowers were planted. It was so beautiful there in the spring and summer. That wasn't all, though. On the back porch Nana had dozens of potted plants hanging on hooks. She watered them, talked to them and nurtured them. And in the winter she would carry them all inside and set them on shelves near the windows of our enclosed front porch. There with a little water and a lot of love she kept them alive, green, and growing even during the coldest, darkest months.
As a boy I was puzzled by all the effort she put into them. I understood the vegetable gardens. They helped to feed the family all winter long. I even understood the flowers around the house. They were pretty and smelled so sweet in the summer months. The reason she put so much effort into caring for those potted plants, however, eluded me. They didn't give us any food and they rarely had any flowers on them. They remained a mystery to my child's mind.
Now as I've grown older I am beginning to understand why my nana had those potted plants. It is the same reason I have so many pictures of sunrises and forests hanging in my home. They remind me during the dark, cold, winter months full of bare trees and yellow grass that light, love, and growth still exist. They remind me that spring will come again.
Today I see Nana's potted plants in a new light. They are worth every bit of the love and care she put into them. But what tells me most about light and love is Nana herself. She is light to my soul even in my darkest times. And her love lives on in my heart even if she passed away. May we all learn to love as she loved, shine as she shined, and live as she lived.

A Chinese medical research team has developed a model using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to blood analysis, allowing labs to provide faster and more correct feedback to doctors.
Hospital labs generally test millions of blood cells for disease diagnosis every day, which is a repeated task usually performed by hand by trained physicians who check blood samples through microscopes, one after another.
The new AI model has been considered as a breakthrough development, as it has the potential to alter change how labs analyze blood samples, simplifying the evaluation process and finding potential abnormal conditions with great efficiency.
A blood smear is a traditional examination used to look for abnormalities in blood cells. It is an important way to discover blood system disorders. However, the current analysis of blood smear images under a microscope is time consuming and mainly relies on the skills and experience of physicians. Many clinics at the grassroots level are lacking well trained professionals, resulting in a low rate of diagnosis.
With 2,500 microscopic blood smear images of patients, researchers developed the AI assisted model. “The AI has learned to recognize which cells are normal or abnormal with an accuracy rate of over 90 percent in a shorter time than human eyes,” said Peng Xiangui, leader of the research team.
Peng went on to explain that to train and test the AI model, his team fed it with data involving 300,000 red blood cells collected over the past five years. The results showed that it can accurately identify 49 types of abnormal blood cells, covering most of the common diseases seen in the clinic.
In addition to reducing human labor, Peng believes that such a medical AI model will assist inexperienced physicians in reaching the level of an expert and increase their work efficiency. Besides, the AI database can store unlimited information, making diagnosis more scientific and accurate.
8.Which of the following is the advantage of the new AI model
A.Cheaper price. B.Higher efficiency.
C.Clearer images. D.Better handling.
9.Why does the blood smear lead to a low rate of diagnosis at the grassroots level
A.It's hard to find abnormal cells.
B.Many clinics don't have professional devices.
C.It's a traditional and backward method.
D.Many clinics lack skilled physicians.
10.What can we infer from Peng's words
A.He thinks highly of the new AI model.
B.The new AI model has been widely used.
C.Inexperienced physicians are no match for the AI model.
D.It's necessary to keep the AI database safe.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.AI helps improve accuracy in blood testing
B.New AI models can cure more diseases
C.Much progress has been made in medical treatment
D.Physicians will treat patients more quickly and better
D
Have you ever wondered why you might be a little taller than your friends or family Well, scientists believe the mystery of why humans are growing taller and reaching puberty (青春期) earlier is due to something in the brain.
We already know that better nutrition leads to greater height as humans have been growing taller on the whole in recent centuries. Better nutrition also causes people to reach maturity faster. Genes also play a role in how tall we become and we all grow and look according to the codes in our DNA. A lack of nutrition makes it harder for us to reach the full potential of our own genes.
According to the University of Maryland, our body requires a certain amount of energy to make us grow. But a new study suggests that a brain receptor (感受器) could be responsible for our growth. The study showed that the brain receptor MC3R is responsible for signals from food reaching a part of the brain called the hypothalamus (下丘脑). The hypothalamus is responsible for keeping things in check like body temperature and adjusting appetite and weight.
MC3R's not working properly tends to mean that people are shorter and start puberty much later. Professor Sir Stephen O'Rahilly, one of the authors of the study, said, “It tells the body we're great here and that we've got lots of food, so grow quickly and have puberty soon.”
There is a lot about the brain we still don't know. But this research could lead to further development of drugs for children with delayed growth and puberty starting much later. More understanding of the receptor won't mean that we can make ourselves taller. That all still depends on genes, but it could help people with long lasting illnesses, who need to build up muscle.
12.What can we learn from the second paragraph
A.Genes lead to faster maturity.
B.Nutrition determines a person's height.
C.Improper nutrition changes one's genes.
D.Better nutrition is important to growing taller.
13.How does MC3R work to get you taller according to the new study
A.By taking in a large amount of nutrition itself.
B.By having us check body temperatures regularly.
C.By helping us control our appetite to lose weight.
D.By sending signals to inspire us to have more nutrition.
14.What will the new finding most probably contribute to
A.Finding ways to put off kids' puberty.
B.Treating patients with long lasting illnesses.
C.Developing medicine for kids with delayed growth.
D.Finding scientific exercise to get our muscle stronger.
15.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Genes Are to Blame for Height
B.Nutrition Is to Blame for Height
C.The Key to Height Is in Our Brains
D.The Key to Height Is in Our Appetite

Emily is a sixth grade student in a small American town. She is a curious and adventurous girl who always dreams of exploring new places. Last summer, her dream came true when she got selected for a student exchange program to visit China.
Emily was super excited, but she knew that going to a different country with a brand new culture might not be easy. When she arrived in China, she had an open heart and lots of hope, but the cultural differences, the language barrier, and the unfamiliar surroundings made her feel a bit overwhelmed.
On her first day at a Chinese school, she felt like she was in a completely different world. The students spoke a language she couldn't understand, and the way things worked in the classroom was very different from back home. During lunchtime, poor Emily sat all by herself in a corner of the cafeteria, feeling lost and lonely. Just then, a friendly Chinese girl came up to her with a warm smile and said, “Hello, my name is Li Shanshan. I noticed you're new here. Would you like to be my friend?”
Emily was so relieved and thankful for the friendly offer. “Thank you,” she replied with a big smile. “I'm Emily, and I'm really happy to meet you.”
Shanshan introduced Emily to her group of friends, and they all welcomed her with open arms. They helped Emily with her Chinese language, taught her about Chinese customs, and shared their favorite Chinese foods. Slowly but surely, Emily started to feel more comfortable and understand the Chinese culture better.
One day, as the English teacher was planning her class schedule, she came up with an idea. She decided to assign each student in the class to do a presentation about their hometowns the next week.
