(2023泰州中学期中)We're always encouraging students to read fiction(小说).
We push them towards the library doors, wave the latest David Walliams best sellers in their faces and catch them in the passage suggesting they read the latest novels.
But do we ever point them in the direction of newspaper websites, travel guides or historical reports
The ability to read and write isn't just about how often students pick up books; it's also about the types of text they read. And that should mean as much non fiction as fiction.
This does present challenges, as Doug Lemov said in Reading Reconsidered, “Understanding non fiction needs a strong base of knowledge, but reading non fiction is also one of the primary ways that such a base of knowledge is built.”
This is why we must introduce non fiction to children from an early age. The more non fiction young people read in school, with the guidance of teachers, the more chances they will have to build up a large store of background knowledge to help them understand more difficult text later on. To do this, we must give more lesson time to non fiction.
Every teacher in every subject also needs to take responsibility for this. Reading has something to do with all subjects, all of which come with their own reading difficulties. Lemov suggests students should be given the chance to read more than one kind of text on any given topic. So, when learning about the Battle of Waterloo in history, why not read some articles about the event And when studying Dickens in English, why not read it alongside some parts chosen from his own Sketches by Boz
For non fiction to be most helpful for students, it should be as undiluted as possible. Text should keep its non fiction features(特点) and difficult words should not be taken away to make it simpler. In fact, non fiction is one of the best ways to make students learn difficult words.
It is also easy to find much non fiction text online. You can even share sources with students. This is especially important for those students going into higher education.
( ) 1. The author raises the question in Paragraph 3 to ________.
A. compare different ideas B. doubt a common practice
C. show the necessity of reading D. question why students read fiction
( ) 2. Why should teachers spend more lesson time on non fiction
A. To increase students' understanding.
B. To get students to study independently.
C. To find excellent students.
D. To make lessons changeable.
( ) 3. What does Lemov advise teachers in every subject to do to help students
A. Teach them to learn from history.
B. Help them with reading difficulties.
C. Encourage them to read related articles.
D. Share stories of famous people with them.
( ) 4. What does the underlined word “undiluted” in the last but one paragraph mean
A. Easy. B. Popular. C. Unexpected. D. Unchanged.

Talking about friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who have wings of their own and who will fly with me. I seek friends whose qualities illuminate(照亮) me and train me up for love. It is only for these people that I reserve(保留) the glowing hours.
When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and “too serious” about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behavior. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories on different topics(主题). Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changing into social creatures(生物) and the_stories_and_poems_stopped.
When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair(绝望) and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at that time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despair disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other.
For almost four years I have had a remarkable penfriend whose imagination illuminates mine. We write long letters where we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way, in the other's dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind. In my most interesting moments, I often think, “Yes, I must tell …”, though we have never met.
It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kindness is worth more to me than the lifetime services of many common people, who will only fill up those darkest moments when I would rather be my own best friend.

C. The author didn't want to write. D. The author left school.
( ) 6. The author would prefer to ________ in the darkest moments.
A. ask for professional help B. read a poem
C. stay alone D. visit tourist attractions
( ) 7. What can you learn from the passage
A. The quality of friends is more important than quantity(数量).

(2023连云港期中)Hangzhou, China—a grand opening ceremony full of Hangzhou characteristics amazed the world on September 23, 2023, as the supreme leader of the country announced the opening of the 19th Asian Games.
The opening show helped to express the host's warm hospitality and its wish to unite the world through sports. Following an opening performance about the autumn equinox(秋分), one of China's 24 solar terms that celebrates the harvest season, over 50,000 audiences burst into cheers as the Hangzhou Games were declared open, making the Zhejiang provincial capital the third Chinese city to host the continental sporting gala, following Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.

(2023徐州期中)Huawei Technologies is a front runner again in the smartphone market with a new phone powered by an advanced chip(芯片) though banned by the US, which may have a great influence on both Chinese and US semiconductor(半导体) industries, experts say. The new Mate 60 Pro uses a 5G application processor(处理器), showing “a made in China design and producing milestone”, according to analysts.
The team believes the 7 nanometer(纳米) processor was made by China's leading chip factory, SMIC. “It shows China's semiconductor industry has been able to make the advanced processor without EUV machines(极紫外线光刻机),” said Dan Hutcheson. “The difficulty of this achievement also shows the adaptability of the country's chip technological ability.”
The most up to date EUV machines are used to produce advanced chips. SMIC has no chance to use EUV machines because of US export controls. Industry experts said it could use some older equipment to produce advanced chips.
Huawei has been on the US Commerce Department's Entity List, which limits its chance to use US technologies. The new phone's 5G chipset, the operating system HarmonyOS(鸿蒙) and other technical differences from its competitors show that “Huawei is back after three years in the wilderness”, said George Koo. He believes the achievement would not be possible without partners in China and a domestic supply chain, from software design and semiconductor production to necessary chemicals and materials.
Huawei's technological advances have promoted some US lawmakers to ask for tougher restrictions, who suggested the US should end all its exports to both Huawei and SMIC. “America's shortsighted plan to separate from China will make the leading US providers of advanced chips lose the profits,” said Koo. “These providers will see their advantages disappear. In the short term, they are not allowed to sell to China. In the long term, China will not need to buy from them.”
The technological breakthrough was expected to help Huawei in China, especially in competition against Apple. “If Huawei can supply and increase the production of its own Kirin(麒麟) 9000S (chip), we see the Mate series phone as an opportunity for Huawei to increase its shipments and regain its market share, potentially causing risk to iPhone sales, especially in the Asia Pacific,” analysts at BofA Securities said.
( ) 1. What does the 5G application processor of the new Mate 60 Pro stand for
A. The advance of chip technological ability in China.
B. The most advanced processor at present in the world.
C. The technological breakthrough of Apple.
D. The technical development of US semiconductor industry.
( ) 2. What influences does the new Mate 60 Pro have on the US according to the fifth paragraph
① Asking for the stricter limits to Huawei.
② Leading to the increase in market share of iPhone.
③ Causing the profit loss of leading US providers.
④ Promoting the development of SMIC.
A. ①② B. ①③ C. ②④ D. ①④
( ) 3. Why can Huawei make the great achievement in producing advanced chips
A. Because Huawei has access to EUV machines.
B. Because Huawei depends on its efforts and some Chinese partners' support.
C. Because Huawei has the most advanced chip technology in the world.
D. Because Huawei has the operating system HarmonyOS, and other technical differences from its competitors.
( ) 4. What can we infer from the passage
A. Huawei can use the most up to date EUV machines.
B. Huawei will need to buy the most advanced chips from the US in the long term.
C. China's semiconductor industry has been able to make the 7 nanometer processor without EUV machines.
D. Huawei's technological advances will promote the development of the semiconductor industry in China.

(2023连云港期中)As a result of trade, travel and migration, different cuisines have spread across the world. Many recipes, chefs and restaurants try to announce that their food of a country or region is the most authentic(正宗的). But is this a good thing
People care about authenticity because food traditions are closely linked to identity(身份), particularly for migrant communities. Sociologist and professor of food studies, Krishnendu Ray, explains that home cooking is often the last way that communities can show their identity. British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver was accused of trying to take advantage of positive feelings about Jamaica. His ready meal product had a Jamaican name, but was unlike real Jamaican cooking.
However, food consultant Sara Kay asks whether there are problems with the idea of authenticity. She stresses that these ideas often come from the expectations that majority cultures have about minority cultures and their food. These can be restricting(限制的)—restaurateurs have complained that people expect Asian food to be cheaper than that from European cultures. Expectations can also give people a false idea of what is authentic. While large cities are full of eateries representing different countries—China, India, Italy, Mexico and more—these labels can oversimplify the reality of food from these countries. Stephanie Elizondo Greist is surprised by the recognition(认识) that foods in Mexico are more authentic than what she ate growing up as a Mexican American in Texas, because she feels that both are authentic examples of Mexican food.
A more controversial(有争议的) view of authenticity was stated by American chef Andrew Zimmern, who claimed that he could bring in Chinese dishes in a more authentic way than existing restaurants—many of which are owned by Chinese Americans. Writer and food podcaster Ruth Tam points out that while these restaurants altered their menus to suit local tastes, so does Zimmern. So, while food and identity are closely linked, and failure to respect authenticity can cause offence, could there be problems with the whole idea of authenticity

A mother of nine children who started medical school when her youngest child was 4 years old, graduated with her degree and plans to be a neurosurgeon(神经外科医生).
Sarah Merrill, now 42, said her journey to medical school began at age 17. She then met her husband and got married. Merrill first thought about going to school part time to get a degree, but later she decided to follow her dream of attending medical school. Certainly, it was a challenge. Speaking of her successfully returning to university, Merrill owed it to her family largely. “When I was accepted at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, we moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona,” said Merrill, who is moving to Indiana with her family to begin her residency(实习期) in neurosurgery. “In fact, they volunteered these movements. I know it was tough for all of us.”
Merrill and her children often have “homework parties” where they study for their own courses. Merrill's choice has given a kind of stimulus to her children. Merrill felt touched knowing her 11 year old daughter wants to become a surgeon and overhearing her son tell his friends his mom's going to be a cool brain surgeon, though he doesn't understand that really.
Merrill's next step into a neurosurgery residency will take her into a male dominated field where only 5% of board certified neurosurgeons are women. Dr Michele Halyard at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine said Merrill was known as a focused student. She added, “If you can deal with nine children patiently, the residency should be a piece of cake because no amount of stress will make you fail.”
Merrill had considered choosing a more family friendly career, but, again, she chose to follow her original dream. It's the same advice she would give to all: “Set the goal that is what you're really enthusiastic about, and it helps to think small. If you know what your interest is, focus on the next step. Then you'll get where you want to go.”
( ) 4. Why does Merrill mention their movements
A. To stress the support of her family.
B. To show her determination to be a doctor.
C. To reflect difficulties in attending college.
D. To describe the process of pursuing her dream.

A. Merrill will have more stress to handle.
B. Being mom ensures Merrill a better doctor.
C. Staying focused and sensible is key to success.

To solve a big environmental problem, chemists in the Czech Republic have been thinking small. Really small. Their new mini robot has one purpose: to help clean up tiny bits of plastic polluting waterways across the globe.
Each new robot is no bigger than the tip of a sharpened pencil. They are magnetic(有磁性的) and shaped like stars. When sunlight hits them, they produce chemical reactions that push them through water in a specific direction. When they find a piece of plastic, they stick to it and start to break it down. When the light goes out, they let go and are free to be used again.
“This work is great,” says Douglas Blackiston at Tufts University in Medford, Mass. He's a biologist who did not work on the project but knows about such devices. He's been designing robots out of living cells, including some that might help with pollution clean up. Speaking of the new one, he mentions that, “These robots can eat plastic. They chew it up. Or they can recover it and be collected with a magnet. Scientists love robots with all these capabilities.”
Chemist Martin Pumera at the Czech University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague led the project. He studies ways to build microrobots. About a decade ago, he says, scientists began developing tiny bots that could move themselves in water. Then, they had to find them a mission to make them do something useful. Since then, Pumera has focused on the problem posed by microplastics, which are everywhere—from the bottom of the ocean to air blowing onto ice atop mountains. They've turned up in drinking water, both bottled and tap water, and some studies estimate that trillions of pieces of plastic end up in the world's waters. The plastic has many sources, from drinking straws and shopping bags to laundry and cleaning wipes. Plastic doesn't easily degrade or fall apart, and that's always been one of its appeals.
Pumera says his final goal is to make cheap and environmentally friendly robots that can be used anywhere in the world.
( ) 4. What do the new robots mainly do
A. To collect tiny bits of plastic in the sea.
B. To push the pollution in water away.
C. To help do research into the plastic.
D. To deal with the plastic in water.
( ) 5. How do the new robots get powered
A. By stars. B. By plastic. C. By sunlight. D. By living cells.
( ) 6. Why did Pumera take part in the project
A. Because of public attention to the plastic.
B. Because of the challenges from the plastic.
C. Because he was asked to do so by other scientists.
D. Because he was inspired by the invention of microrobots.
( ) 7. What is the best title of the article
