I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn’t like attention drawn to myself. And 21 otherwise assigned(指定)a seat by the teacher, I always 22 to sit at the back of the classroom. 21·cn·jy·com
All this 23 after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the basketball team. At first I thought it was a crazy 24 because I didn’t have a good sense of balance, nor did I have the 25 to keep pace with the others on the team and they would tease me. Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts was only the 27 of it! When I first started 28 the practice sessions, I didn’t even know the rules of the game, much 29 what I was doing. “The first and best of victories for a man is to conquer himself; to be conquered by himself is, of all things, the most shameful, ”says Plato. Self-control is at the root of all the advantages. Let a man give in to his impulses(冲动)and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral freedom. 21cnjy.com
A single angry word has lost many friends. When Socrates found in himself any temper or anger, he would check it by speaking low in order to control himself. If you are conscious of being angry, keep your mouth shut so that you can hold back rising anger. Many a person has dropped dead in great anger. Fits of anger bring fits of disease. “Whoever the gods would destroy, they first make them mad. ”“Keep cool, ”says Webster, “anger is not argument. ”“Be calm in arguing, ”says George Herbert, “for fierceness makes error a fault. ”【版权所有:21教育】
To be angry with a weak man is to prove that you are not strong yourself. “Anger, ”says Pythagoras, “begins with foolishness and ends with regret. ”You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he conquers, not by the power of those which conquer him.
Self-control is man’s last and greatest victory.
If a man lacks self-control he seems to lack everything. Without it he will have no patience, no power to govern himself; he can have no self-confidence, for he will always be controlled by his strongest feeling. If he lacks self-control, the very backbone and nerve of character are lacking too.
41. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Self-control is important for a man.
B. We should learn to be strong.
C. A man who keeps cool won’t lose any game.
D. The great heroes in history knew how to control themselves.

B. If you lose your temper first, gods will fail you first.
C. If you can’t control yourself, you will be crazy.
D. If the gods want to fail you, they will make you mad first.
43. Which of the following is NOT true, according to the passage?
A. The first and best of victories for a man is to conquer himself.

Computers are very important to modern life. Many people think that in the future computers will be used in lots of everyday life. It is thought that we won’t have to go shopping because we will be able to get most things which are sold in shops on the Internet. There will be no more books because we will be able to get all texts from computers. The Internet will be used to play games, see films and buy food. Most telephone calls will be made by computers, too.
Some people are glad about these new ways of shopping and communicating(交际). Others do not think that computers will replace our old ways.
Let’s look at books, for example. Some people think that one day we will not read books made of paper. Instead, we will buy and read books using computers. We will read texts on small pocket computers. The computers will keep many different books in them at the same time. We won’t need to turn lots of pages and paper will be saved. Computerized(计算机化的)books will be used more and more.
Is Internet shopping such a pleasure as going to the shop? Many people say it is not. It is a pleasure to go into shops and look at things you want to buy. It is also unlikely that many people will want to read large texts on their computers, because paper books will perhaps be more friendly. Maybe computers won’t change these two habits. 21·世纪*教育网

A year after graduation, I was offered a position teaching a writing class. Teaching was a profession I had never seriously considered, though several of my stories had been published. I accepted the job without hesitation, as it would allow me to wear a tie and go by the name of Mr. Davis. My father went by the same name, and I liked to imagine people getting the two of us confused. “Wait a minute, ”someone might say, “are you talking about Mr. Davis the retired man, or Mr. Davis the respectable scholar? ”
The position was offered at the last minute, and I was given two weeks to prepare, a period I spent searching for a briefcase(公文包)and standing before my full-length mirror, repeating the words, “Hello, class. I’m Mr. Davis. ”Sometimes I would give myself an aggressive voice. Sometimes I would sound experienced. But when the day eventually came, my nerves kicked in and the true Mr. Davis was there. I sounded not like a thoughtful professor, but rather a 12-year-old boy.
I arrived in the classroom with paper cards designed in the shape of maple leaves. I had cut them myself out of orange construction paper. I saw nine students along a long table. I handed out the cards, and the students wrote down their names and fastened them to their breast pockets as I required.
“All right then, ”I said. “Okay, here we go. ”Then I opened my briefcase and realized that I had never thought beyond this moment. I had been thinking that the students would be the first to talk, offering their thoughts and opinions on the events of the day. I had imagined that I would sit at the edge of the desk, overlooking a forest of raised hands. Every student would shout to be heard, and I would knock on something in order to silence them. I would yell, “Calm down, you’ll all get your turn. One at a time, one at a time! ”
A terrible silence ruled the room, and seeing no other opinions, I instructed the students to pull out their notebooks and write a brief essay related to the theme of deep disappointment.

China’s new popular word, tuhao, may be in next year’s Oxford English Dictionary. The word caught the attention of the dictionary’s editing team after BBC’s recent program on influential Chinese words.
“If its influence continues, it is very likely to appear on our updated list of words, ”said Julie Kleeman, project manager of the editing team. Kleeman told the Beijing Youth Daily that tuhao has some similarities with the English word bling, which refers to expensive, ostentatious(阔绰的)clothing or jewelry. Both the words have existed for long but later on took a new meaning.
In Chinese, “tu” means rude and “hao” means rich. It has traditionally been referred to rich people who throw their weight around in China’s rural areas. In recent years, people in the ACG(Anime, Comic and Game)circle borrowed the term to describe those who spend money in an unreasonable manner.
The word gained acceptance in September with the launch of Apple’s new gold-colored iPhone, an item loved by China’s nouveau riche(暴发户). The color became known as “tuhao gold”. The word is now often used by the online community to refer to people who have the cash but lack the class to go with it.
Kleeman also mentioned another Chinese word—dama—which may also be taken in the dictionary.
Dama, meaning middle-aged women, was first used in the Western media by the Wall Street Journal in May when thousands of Chinese women were buying up record number of gold. They were the driving force in the global gold market between April and June when the gold prices dropped.
People can have an “intuitive”(直觉的)grasp of the meanings if they see pinyin, Kleeman said, adding that people avoided using an English word to keep the original meaning. The new words will be first uploaded on the official website before the dictionaries arrive. The online version is also renewed every three months.
56. Why is the word “tuhao” likely to be taken in Oxford English Dictionary?
A. Because it represents noble and rich.
B. Because it has the same meaning with an English word.
C. Because its influence becomes bigger and bigger.
D. Because it is popular in online game circle.
57. The word “tuhao” used to be used in .
A. ACG circle B. China’s rich circle
C. online community D. China’s countryside
58. What’s the similarity between “tuhao” and “dama”?
A. Both take new meanings.
B. Both were created in China.
C. Both will be uploaded in the next version.
D. They have the same meaning.
59. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. The popularity of the two words “tuhao” and “dama”.
B. The possibility to be taken in Oxford English Dictionary for “tuhao” and “dama”.
C. The new meanings of the two words “tuhao” and “dama”.
D. The influence of Chinese in modern world.
60. The passage most probably belongs to .
A. a social survey B. an advertisement
C. a news report D. a publishing notice

The USA is a land of immigrants. Between 1815 and 1914, the world witnessed the greatest peaceful migration in its history: 35 million people, mostly Europeans, left their homelands to start new lives in America. Why did these people risk everything by leaving their homes and families?
First, what forced emigrants to make the decision to leave? One major cause for European farmers to leave was the rise in population which in turn led to land hunger. Another was politics. There was an increased taxation(税收)and the growth of armies, and many young men fled eastern Europe to avoid being forced to join the army.
Physical hunger provided another pressing reason. Following the collapse(衰退)of the economy of southern Italy in the 1860s, hundreds of thousands decided to start a new life in America. Religion also encouraged millions to leave the Old World.
In short, people chose to leave their homes for social, economic and religious reasons. As a result, by 1890 among a total population of 63 million, there were more than nine million foreign-born Americans.
But what were the attractions? First of all, there was the promise of land which was so scarce in Europe. Next, factories were calling for workers, and pay conditions were much better than back home. Men were needed to open up the West and build the long railroads, and new towns needed settlers to live in and to develop business. There was the space for religious people to practice their faith in peace.
This immigration meant that by around the 1850s Americans of non-English had started to be more than those of English. As we know, there were losers. To start with, there were those unwilling immigrants, the slaves who had been used as a source of cheap labour. Nor should we forget the equally unlucky American Indians. By 1860 there were 27 million free whites, four million slaves and a mere 488, 000 free blacks.
Nowadays, the USA is still seen by millions as the Promised Land. As always, it remains an attractive place to those who think it will offer them a second chance.
61. What is not the cause for people to leave their homeland?
A. The search for religious freedom.
B. The search for adventure.
C. Unwillingness to join the army.
D. Economics.
62. Why was life of the 19th century European farmers difficult? 21世纪教育网版权所有

[1]One Friday night in May 2012, Oliver and Ione Kleven heard angry shouts coming from their front lawn(草坪). Ione, 65, stepped onto the porch(门廊)and saw two men in dark clothes struggling with something on the ground-right where she and her grandson had planted a flower bed the weekend before.
[2]“Go fight somewhere else! ”she shouted, worried her plants would get damaged. At the sound of her voice, the face of a boy appeared from beneath the two men. He looked 14. “They’re trying to kill me! ”the boy screamed. Ione ran towards them and, without hesitation, caught the boy’s arm, pulling him out.
[3]“Leave him alone! ”she shouted. When the men stood up, Ione saw what looked like a sharp object in one man’s hand. When she turned back towards the boy, he was moaning(呻吟)in pain and holding his stomach. The attackers began to move in on the boy again when Ione’s husband shouted, “Get lost! ”The two men walked quickly and quietly across the street and drove off in a dark car.
[4]“I have to get to the hospital! ”the boy cried. He lifted his shirt, and Ione could see a bloody wound on his stomach. Oliver hugged the trembling(发抖的)boy while Ione caught her cell phone and car keys inside the house. She handed the phone to Oliver. “Call 911, ”she told him. “I’m going after them. ”Ione took off but was unable to find the car.
[5]The Klevens then learned what had happened. Earlier that night, as the boy waited for his parents to pick him up from the high school across the street from the Klevens’ house, two men approached and demanded his wallet. When he refused, one of the men hit him in the face. The boy ran across the street. The men caught up with him, and one hurt him in the back and stomach with a sharp knife. “The first and best of victories for a man is to conquer himself; to be conquered by himself is, of all things, the most shameful, ”says Plato. Self-control is at the root of all the advantages. Let a man give in to his impulses(冲动)and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral freedom.
”www.21-cn-jy.com

” 21*cnjy*com

A debate heated up recently, thanks to Amy Chua’s book about a Chinese “tiger mother”. In her latest book entitled Battle Hymn of The Tiger Mother, Amy describes how she adopts traditional Chinese methods to educate her children, which is considered by many westerners to be too hard and inhuman.
One of the issues being discussed after the book was published is whether early education should focus on children’s happiness. Those supporting the idea argue that early education is intended to help children grow up in a cheerful atmosphere and inspire them to better themselves in an all-round way. On the contrary, people holding the opposite view insist that since reality life is full of happiness and pain, children should be well prepared for that even during childhood.
In my opinion, education methods should be adopted based on individual personalities. Moreover, educators should respect children as independent human beings.
