I remember opening my iPad one day in fifth grade after a silly conversation with my cousin about scary story ideas. Hours later, I completed my first short story. Since then, I’ve written many stories, short and long. But also, since then, I’ve read more and noticed just how well people my age could write. Since then, I also felt less and less willing to share my work:what if my writing isn’t as good as everybody else's What started off as something creative that I could share with friends turned into competition changed by feelings of competence. Oftentimes, hobbies begin as something just for fun. But eventually, what was once fun now contributes to feelings of stress and inadequacy. I have plenty of memories of thinking I was going to pick up something new and stick with it, whether it be playing the piano, or drawing. But there is always a part of me that expects myself to just magically be good at all of those things. And when I’m not, the enjoyment tapers off as, slowly, I think mediocrity(平庸) isn’t acceptable anymore.
Writing is the only hobby that I have repeatedly come back to despite dropping it constantly. I can see the growth in my writing all these years, but the expectations to be better and better is never satisfied. This is why I drop writing for months at a time. This feeling of a hobby becoming, for a lack of better word, a chore, lowers the satisfaction of said hobby.
But hobbies are there to give you a breath of fresh air from having to excel at everything, from academics to your occupation. We must accept that it is okay to just suck at an activity but still doing it because it brings you joy. There is a balance between joy and expectations, either set by others or by ourselves.
24. What does the author do in the first paragraph
A. He challenges a tradition. B. He relates an experience.
C. He envisions a coming trend. D. He compares varied hobbies.
25. Which can best replace the underlined phrase “tapers off” in paragraph 1
A. Thins out. B. Tops out. C. builds up. D. Spreads around.
26. Why does the author drop writing constantly
A. He is inadequate for it. B. He prefers mediocrity.
C. He equates joy with achievement. D. He receives bitter comment.
27. What message does the passage convey
A. Mediocrity is the key to enjoyment.
B. A hobby shared is a hobby squared.
C. Excellence ensures academic success.
D. Enjoyment outweighs excellence in hobbies.

The Caspian Sea, the world’s largest inland water body, is declining, according to a new study published in Communications Earth & Environment. The study reports the water sources that typically feed the sea are contributing less and less water. So much so that these sources cannot keep up with evaporation (蒸发). If global temperatures rise by 2°C, the sea’s water levels could drop by 16-32 feet, which means 4 out of 10 ecosystem types unique to the Caspian Sea would disappear completely.
The Caspian Sea is home to a variety of life. Six sturgeon (鲟鱼) species live within the sea. In the Caspian Sea, sturgeon typically reside in shallower waters during the summer and fall and lay eggs in the rivers that flow into the sea. A drop in water levels would prevent them from accessing these grounds, which could lead to population decline. The sea is also a hot spot for some seabirds. They usually take shelter in the coastal wetlands, but it’s possible those could dry up as well.
The Caspian Sea touches five countries — Azerbaijan Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan — and a drop in water levels could seriously impact trade routes vital to the economies of these countries, as low water levels could prevent ships from docking (入港). Besides, the exposed dry seabed is likely to release dust containing industrial pollutants and salt, posing serious threats to human health. A dropping water level could also alter the climate of the region, thus impacting the area’s agriculture.
But all hope is not lost. “Some Caspian Sea level decline appears unavoidable,” Simon Goodman from the University of Leeds said in a press release. “However, with the anticipated effects unfolding over a few decades, it should be possible to find ways to protect biodiversity while safeguarding human interests and well being. That might sound like a long timescale, but, given the immense political, legal and practical challenges involved, it is advisable to start action as soon as possible to give the best chance of success.”
28. What is a fundamental driver for the Caspian Sea’s water crisis
A. Reduced inflow of feeder rivers. B. Industrial pollution of coastal plants.
C. Increased evaporation of the Caspian Sea. D. Sudden disappearance of the ecosystems.
29. Why are sturgeon populations threatened by the decline of water levels
A Seabirds compete for their food. B. They lose access to coastal wetlands.
C. They can’t reach rivers to reproduce. D. The shallower summer habitats dry up.
30. What could be a likely consequence of the drying process
A. Establishment of trade routes. B. Release of seabed pollutants.
C. Expansion of local agriculture. D. Alteration of regional integration.
31. What does Simon Goodman’s suggest to address the problem
A. Local community relocation. B. Resignation to biodiversity loss.
C. Emphasis on economic interests. D. Urgent cross-border cooperation.
D
It’s a problem that has annoyed many horror movie makeup artists: How do you give someone the appearance of having a second head Seemingly to fake out hunters, many butterflies have found their own solutions to this problem, with complicated patterns and structures on their wings that create what look like second heads on their backsides. Now, in a new study, researchers at the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) dive deeper into the origins of these “false heads”.
Previous studies have shown these false heads help confuse hunters: Damage to the back end of a butterfly’s wings near the false head has less impact on vital behaviors such as flying and mating than damage to the butterfly’s real head. Scientists had long theorized that butterflies’ false heads arose because five key traits (特征) — namely false feelers, noticeable coloration, wing patterns that contain special lines, large spots, and head like shapes — evolve (进化) together to redirect predator attention. But no one had traced the evolutionary history of these traits.
Evolutionary ecologists at IISER began by analyzing images of nearly 1,000 species of butterflies and marking how many of the false head traits each species exhibited. The researchers then constructed a phylogenetic tree (系统树), which allowed them to visualize how closely related false-headed species were to one another, as well as how each of the traits evolved over putational modeling of this tree revealed that four of the five false head traits all evolved in a correlated manner, while also showing the order in which the traits first appeared within butterflies.
The researchers propose that the separate traits integrated into a single, complex false head trait because of a common selective force: attacks from hunters. However, questions remain on the exact advantages that these distinctive defense mechanisms provide to the butterflies that use them.
32. Why is “makeup artist” mentioned in the first paragraph
A To support a scientific theory. B. To illustrate a filming technique.
C. To introduce an evolutionary trick. D. To justify a long-held assumption.
33. What might previous studies focus on
A. The development of the five traits. B. The special behaviors of butterflies.
C. The defensive function of false heads. D. The evolution theories of butterflies.
34. What did IISER scientists do in the new study
A. They classified wing patterns of butterflies.
B. They reconstructed history of trait evolution.
C. They innovated methods of studying butterflies.
D. They analyzed the survival benefits of false heads.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. To survive False a Second Head B. Confused Phylogenetic Tree Helps
C. Do Key traits Enhance Insects’ Survival D. Does Evolution Reshape Butterflies’ Bodies

The smell of roasted chicken filled the kitchen as we gathered for our usual Friday dinner. Having swallowed a big mouthful of chicken, I took a deep breath and began, “Could I invite some friends over tomorrow Just for the afternoon ”
My parents exchanged a glance, then nodded readily. But beside me, my younger sister, Lily, froze. Her wide eyes locked onto mine. “But... what about Miracle She’ll be terrified, Ethan.”
Miracle was a cat Lily rescued on a rainy day last winter. True to her name, the cat had survived. Yet, it remained a creature of profound shyness: Loud voices sent her trembling under beds; sudden movements made her jump. She wasn’t just a pet; she was a fragile soul Lily fiercely protected.
“I promise, Lily,” I insisted, leaning forward, meeting her worried gaze(凝视). “We’ll stay in the living room. No loud music, no shouting games. I’ll keep the back door shut tight, and I’ll warn everyone to be quiet. Miracle won’t even know they’re here.” I saw the conflict in her eyes — her desire to be supportive warring with her deep concern for the poor cat. After a tense silence, she finally gave a small, reluctant nod.
Saturday arrived with sunshine and laughter as my friends piled in. True to my word, I guided them straight to the living room, reminding them firmly about Miracle’s sensitivity.Initially, we chatted, played cards quietly. Glancing around, I spotted Miracle sliding silently down the hallway towards Lily’s room. Good, she’s keeping her distance, I thought, relieved.
As the afternoon wore on, however, the initial caution disappeared. A competitive board game led to enthusiastic cheers and laughter. Lost in the sheer fun of being with my friends, I forgot everything - he promise, the fragile creature.
After friends departed with cheerful goodbyes, I began tidying empty glasses, still lost in the happy scenes when Lily burst through the front door into her room. Then came her scream, “Ethan, Miracle is gone.”

66. Dear Kathy,
Thank you for creating a new elective. After careful thought, I pick “Travel Around Britain.” I’ve always wanted to practise real-life English while exploring both famous sights and hidden villages. The course could teach us how to plan routes, read British timetables and even order afternoon tea like locals. Short films from each region would make the lessons vivid, and group projects could design dream itineraries for classmates. I believe this blend of language and culture will be both fun and practical.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
67.
A cold wave of fear rushed through me. I remembered opening the backdoor for some air. Miracle must have got scared out of the house then. My sister looked at me in disbelief. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over. “You promised” The words weren’t shouted, but they cut deep. Shame burned my face. Without a word, I grabbed a flashlight and raced into the backyard, Lily closely behind, her calls for Miracle now desperate and choked with tears. We searched like crazy.
Luckily, we found Miracle in the backyard. There hidden under the thick bushes was Miracle. I dropped to my knees and scooped it up gently and placed it into Lily’s waiting hands. Once we went back home, I apologized sincerely, “I am so, so sorry.” I slowly reached out towards Lily, placing my hand gently over hers. “Can you forgive me ” Lily looked down at Miracle, then back at me, her eyes still wet but softening slightly. A fragile bridge of forgiveness began to form.
