以第二个语篇为例,标题 “Grandpa Arrested After One Shower Too Many”高度概括了事件的主要内容。第一段(导语)简洁概括了新闻内容,涵盖了4个“W”和1个“H”的问题,即“Who”(James McKay 及其妻子 Laurene, 邻居 Keith Smith),“When”(Saturday night), “Where”(on the balcony), “Why”(literally getting wet just once too often), “How” (after hitting Keith Smith over the head with his walking stick)。
1.He's bitter over the fact that people thought of his music as “noise”.
2.Instead, Smith emptied one of his larger tanks over his balcony and both the McKays and the cake were wet through.
①She emptied the water out of the vase.________________
②I've learnt a lesson from _______________________________________________.
③You should not ________________________.I am sure you will find a better one soon.
1.McKay's wife, Laurene said that, while McKay is usually a peaceful and pleasant person, he had been driven to this act of violence by literally getting wet just once too often.
2.She added that it wasn't only the water falling onto their balcony from Smith watering his plants that bothered them, but also the way he cleaned his fish tanks.
赏析:此句中that引导宾语从句,从句中使用了it was ... that ...强调句型;falling onto their balcony from Smith是现在分词短语作后置定语,修饰the water;he cleaned his fish tanks是省略了that/in which的定语从句,修饰先行词the way。
①________________________________________________________________________,
he didn't work hard.
②________________________ I firmly believe that I will adapt to the college life as soon as possible.
1.Ma Ming's neighbours said they were being driven mad being exposed to such noise.
2.We'd be sitting there happily reading our newspapers, when suddenly so much water would come from above that we'd be as wet as if we had showered with our clothes on!
赏析:作者使用了比喻的修辞手法,通过“as wet as if we had showered with our clothes on”形象地突出了被水浇湿的程度,让读者能深切感受到他们的遭遇和不满情绪。
①Sometimes it's enough to drive you mad if you are stuck in a traffic jam during the rush hour.
________________________________________________________________________
②He looked around the room as if he was going to impress everything in the room on his mind.
他环顾了一下房间,___________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________。
“Definitely the most exciting birthday ever!” said the cheerful old man.“The best since my youth, I'd say!”

Dear Agony Aunt,
I'm in a total mess here — hope you can help me out!
I'm 17, and a member of our school basketball team.I'm crazy about basketball, and pretty good at it too, which is probably why I was so mad when we lost our last match. We played well, but I felt the team were let down by one member, our point guard. The point guard is a key player, but it was like he wasn't even on the court! Disappointed by his behaviour, I said all this to my best friend.I was just letting off steam really, because I was so angry, but then my friend went and told everyone else what I'd said.
This is so totally awkward. I'm really angry with my friend — what should I say to him And should I say anything at all to my teammate
Embarrassed and ashamed, I can't concentrate on anything. Please help!
Ben
Dear Ben,
There is an old American saying,“Loose lips sink ships.” This means that if you speak too of trouble. The situation here is so much worse because the “loose lips” were your best friend's.Treated this way, you're sure to feel hurt — we should always be able to trust those closest to us, and it hurts even more when we find we can't.
But I have to say that it's partly your fault, isn't it You admit that you were “letting off steam”. It is understandable in that situation, but we should always think before we speak.
Here's what you need to do.First, apologise to your teammate. If you ever want to win any communicating with each other clearly and resolving conflicts. So have a chat with your teammate.Tell him directly and honestly that you were talking without thinking.
Then, talk to your friend. Friendship should be one of the greatest things in the world, but sometimes it can be difficult. Again, your strategy is clear communication. Tell your friend you're angry with him for repeating what you said and making the situation worse, but that you want to move on. Approached in this way, your friendship will soon be repaired.
Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, think about your own behaviour.Don't say too much when you're angry! Filled with anger, you tend to say whatever comes to your mind. This gives people the wrong signal. Take a deep breath, calm down, and always remember: think first, speak later. If you feel one of your teammates isn't pulling their weight, then raise your concerns in a professional way with your team coach.
If you think about other people's feelings as well as your own, you'll soon find everything works out.
Good luck!

A
Rolland and Adeline are proud parents to nine beautiful children. Their youngest two, daughter Lanto, and son, Rindra, were both born with cleft lip (唇裂) conditions. In Madagascar, many families have never seen a cleft lip before, so it's a condition often greeted with fear and misfortune in some rural communities.
However, the news of Lanto and Rindra's cleft lip wasn't much of a shock for Rolland and Adeline because Rolland's cousin — a man in his fifties — had lived his entire adult life with an untreated cleft lip. Although seeing a relative with a cleft lip meant the family weren't fearful of the condition, they knew the negative impact an untreated cleft lip can have on a person's health and life. As any loving parents would, Rolland and Adeline wanted a better future for their children.
Rolland heard an advertisement on the radio about an Operation Smile surgical programme in Antsirabe, Madagascar. Finding out that Rindra and Lanto could have the cleft lip surgery they needed, for free, was a dream for the family. Unlike here in the UK, health services aren't free in many parts of the world, and the costs of treatment — or even travelling to reach medical facilities — are out of reach for most families.
When Rolland and his children arrived at the patient village, they were surprised to see so many other families in the same position. After a thorough medical evaluation by medical volunteers, Lanto was found to be fit enough for surgery, and later got the new smile her parents had dreamed of for her. But, for younger brother Rindra, the journey to a new smile would take a little longer.
Operation Smile has provided hundreds of thousands of safe surgeries for children with cleft lip conditions worldwide. For more information about our work or to find out how you can help, visit the official website.

Which of your children is your favorite Your response is probably “none of them”. What kind of parent would choose one child as his or her favorite The truth might be surprising to you.
Years of research supports what many have suspected — most parents have a favorite child. Studies have explored reasons from birth order to gender (性别) and shared interests. Yet even with years of research that supports this idea, most parents tend to deny the fact that they have a favorite child.
Even if there is no obvious parental favorite among siblings (兄弟姐妹), studies have shown that children often feel preferential treatment of their sibling by their parents. Favoritism often results in family conflicts and feelings of sadness among family members whether parents' favoritism is real or only felt. Thus both the kids and their parents tend to be plagued by the favoritism.
The question isn't whether or not you have a favorite child, since it's pretty clear that many parents do. Typically, favoritism has little to do with loving one child more. It is more about how your personality resonates (产生共鸣) with one child's personality more than the others'. Essentially, it's a question of “like”.
Still, why is it so hard for us to admit that one of our children might be our favorite Some parents might worry about harming their children emotionally or psychologically. Some parents confuse liking one child's personality with the love they show to each child. However, when recognizing that you might hold preferential feelings towards one child you are taking an important step towards creating a better relationship with all of your children.
Instead of denying the fact, you can reflect on how you relate to each of your children. Examining your feelings towards each of your children can provide a greater insight into your own personality and how you function in relationships — and in fact, how you consider your children might reflect more about your thoughts and feelings of yourself than them. Increased awareness about your inner world can help you build and keep healthier relationships with your children.
5.How do most parents respond to the result of the research
A.They're quite concerned about it.
B.They're unwilling to admit it.
C.They're sensitive to it.
D.They're regretful about it.
√
根据第二段的“Yet even with years of research that supports this idea, most parents tend to deny the fact that they have a favorite child.”
6.What does the underlined word “plagued” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Encouraged. B.Troubled.
C.Separated. D.Confused.
√
根据第二段的“Favoritism often results in family conflicts ... both the kids and their parents tend to be plagued by the favoritism.”
7.According to the passage, why do parents have a favorite child
A.The child is worth more love.
B.The child has a good personality.
C.The child has more in common with them.
D.The child knows how to please them.
√
根据第三段的“Typically, favoritism has little to do with loving one child more. It is more about how your personality resonates with one child's personality more than the others'.”
8.What would be the best title for the passage
A.Is it OK to have a favorite child
B.What kind of kids do parents prefer
C.How can parents get along well with children
D.Why do parents treat their kids differently
√

When something goes wrong, do you tend to bounce back or fall apart When you have resilience (恢复力), you have the inner strength that helps you rebound from a setback or challenge. 9 Here are some skills to help you develop resilience.
Realize it's normal. Less than 20 percent of people successfully achieve their goal the first time around. It's normal and expected for setbacks to occur. 10 Knowing this, it's important to anticipate that the main task will be how to effectively manage the setback when it arises.
Learn from the past. 11 Think about what has helped you through tough times. You can even write about past events in a journal to help you see the patterns of how you behave and to help guide you in the future.
12 Tend to your own needs and feelings. Do activities and hobbies you enjoy. Include physical activity in your daily routine. Get plenty of sleep and make bedtime rituals. Eat a healthy diet. Practice how to manage stress. Try ways to relax, such as yoga, meditation, guided imagery, or deep breathing.
Take action. Don't ignore your problems. 13 It can take time to recover from a major setback, trauma or loss. But know that your life can improve if you work at it.

A
Rolland and Adeline are proud parents to nine beautiful children.

6.What does the underlined word “plagued” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Encouraged. B.Troubled.
C.Separated. D.Confused.
7.According to the passage, why do parents have a favorite child
A.The child is worth more love.
B.The child has a good personality.
C.The child has more in common with them.
D.The child knows how to please them.
8.What would be the best title for the passage
A.Is it OK to have a favorite child
B.What kind of kids do parents prefer
C.How can parents get along well with children
D.Why do parents treat their kids differently
