What’s the most important thing for you to have in your life Somebody mentions hard-work, others suggest knowledge, love and luck.
If you arrange(排列)the 26 English letters in order and use numbers to represent each of them, for example,1 for a,2 for b,3 for c……26 for z, you can change an English word into a number. So hard-work becomes 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11=“98”, meaning 98 is its mark. Knowledge: 11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5=“96”, love: 12+15+22+5=“54”, and luck: 12+21+3+11=“47”, a small mark. None of these words can give one a full mark. What about money It can’t, either.
Then what else Don’t be worried. You can always find an answer to a problem in your life, when you change your way of looking at things or doing things, or your attitude. Yes, a full mark.
Different attitudes lead to different courses of life. Most time people hope for a better life. It is possible that they will have a better life if they change their attitudes. When you change your manner and became friendly towards others, you’ll meet more smiling faces towards you. In the same way, if you take a positive attitude towards failure(有益的)though it has caused you losses.

One night, during the first of my eldest son’s three basketball games, we happened to be sitting next to a lady with a young son. The little boy looked slightly younger than my youngest son. At one point in the game, the little guy looked over to my son, and said, “Wanna be my friend ” My husband leaned over to tell me what he heard. I spent the next 20 minutes taking pictures of my oldest son on the court, and my youngest son, with his new buddy, playing games two seats down from where I sat. It was a heartwarming scene and reminded me how easy it can be to make new friends.
A few hours earlier, we went to a downtown cafe for an afternoon treat. There were no free tables for four, so we took a table for two, and crowded into the small space, each taking a bite of everyone else’s order. We were loud.
We were very likely annoying the college students with open laptops, drinking coffee and working hard to finish midterm papers. One such young lady came over to our table and said, “I have more room at my table. I am happy to trade with you guys so you can spread out.” It was a simple act but it showed a selfless heart. We politely refused her offer, but her kindness stuck with me for hours after it happened.
These are just two of everyday kindnesses I often take for granted. Though often neglected by us, these small acts of service, friendliness and human care are what it takes to make the world go round.

Growing up, my favourite children’s book was Amelia Bedelia. Amelia’s silly behaviours that were a result of her literal interpretation of language often had me laughing. When she was told to dust the furniture, instead of grabbing a feather duster, she sprinkled (撒) dust all over the chairs and tables. A classic moment in Amelia’s life.
Recently, several of my friends have decided to limit their use of electronic devices for chatting to avoid potential misunderstandings. Yet, I enjoy using these tools to stay connected with my children and grandchildren. But I admit it does lead to more frequent Amelia Bedelia moments.
The other day I was providing childcare for my granddaughter Cora and her one-year-old brother, Zay. Zay was sleeping while Cora was in her bedroom colouring, with her tablet right next to her. Hoping to have a few minutes of peace, I told Cora I would be in the backyard and that she should call me if Zay woke up. Shortly after, the door opened. There was Cora, red-faced, struggling to carry Zay. I quickly took him from her, gently scolding (训斥), “Cora, I told you to call me.”
She simply replied, “Grandma, I did call you. You didn’t answer. Where’s your phone ” Her call had come via an app on her tablet to my phone which was on the kitchen table. Clearly, we had different ideas of what “call” meant.
As my grandchildren become more proficient (熟练) with technology and the language of a different generation, there is no doubt our Amelia Bedelia moments will only increase. I can resist the misunderstandings by putting my phone away, but to enjoy the smile of the loved ones, I’d rather keep it closer to me to experience the silly accidents that will occur.
21.What caused Amelia’s silly behaviours
22.Why didn’t the author’s granddaughter call her the way she had expected
23.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The author cherishes Amelia Bedelia moments because she wants to resist the misunderstandings.
24.If you experience an Amelia Bedelia moment, what would you do (In about 40 words)

When Tom transferred from his rural middle school to a bustling city high school, he faced a crushing academic gap. Raised in a village where math lessons focused on basic addition and subtraction, Tom felt utterly unprepared for the city school’s rigorous curriculum. Algebra equations and geometric theorems seemed like a foreign language. His first math test — a humiliating 42/100 — left him paralyzed with shame. “I’ll never catch up,” he thought, feeling overwhelmed and avoiding eye contact with classmates who scored effortlessly in the 90s.
Ms. Liu, a patient and observant math teacher, recognized Tom’s silent struggle. After class, she handed him a neatly printed practice sheet. “Let’s tackle this step by step,” she said. For the next three months, Ms. Liu dedicated two afternoons weekly to one-on-one tutoring. She broke complex problems into visual diagrams, comparing algebraic variables to “missing puzzle pieces” and geometric angles to “folded paper edges.” To help him memorize formulas, she created catchy mnemonics (助记符,顺口溜), like “All Students Take Coffee” for trigonometric (三角函数) ratios. Additionally, she invited Tom to join her after-school study group, where peers shared problem-solving shortcuts in a judgment-free zone.
Tom’s determination matched his teacher’s effort. He transformed every spare moment into a learning opportunity: reviewing flashcards during his hour-long bus commute, solving practice problems during lunch breaks, and rewriting notes until his hands cramped. Each evening, he emailed Ms. Liu his homework drafts, and she responded with detailed corrections by dawn. Progress was painfully slow—his next test climbed to 65, then 78 — but Tom clung to Ms. Liu’s mantra: “Small steps still move mountains.”
The turning point arrived when Ms. Liu surprised him with an application for the Regional Math Olympiad. “You’re ready,” she insisted, though Tom doubted himself. For weeks, he drilled past competition papers, often working past midnight. On the day of the event, his palms sweat as he faced the first algebra problem, but Ms. Liu’s voice echoed in his mind: “Focus on what you know.” When results were announced, Tom’s name appeared under “Honorable Mentions” — an achievement he’d never imagined possible.
At the award ceremony, Tom clutched (紧握,抱紧) his certificate, tears blurring the stage lights. “Ms. Liu didn’t just teach me math,” he told the crowd, his voice trembling. “She showed me that failure is just the first draft of success.” The applause from classmates and teachers cemented a truth Tom now embraced: perseverance could bridge even the widest gaps.

26.Explain the meaning of the word “overwhelmed” in Paragraph 1. (No more than 2 words)

It was a dark and stormy night. The ferocious wind shook the windows wildly, as though someone outside were beating on the glass. It was also New Year’s Eve. We were having our annual party and had a house full of people just starting to celebrate.
Suddenly, we heard loud explosions. Looking outside and up into the hills, we saw sparks(火花) flying from electrical transformers(变压器). One area after another went dark up in those hills. Then there was the loudest explosion of them all and our house went dark too. I tried to find every candle we had and lit them. The candles made everything look lovely. But we had problems. We had fifteen people standing around and we still had to cook dinner. How would we do that without electricity
The barbecue! Why not cook on the barbecue We men went outside, some holding flashlights and others cooking. We did a wonderful job. The women stayed inside and got the salads ready. Everything was delicious. There were still a few hours to go before the beginning of the new year, so we all sat around the dining room table and sang up until a few minutes before midnight. We couldn’t watch the ball drop in Times Square on television but that wouldn’t stop us from celebrating. I stood on a chair and, with the help of someone’s watch to tell us the time, we all counted down and I dropped a tennis ball! We all screamed Happy New Year. We didn’t need electricity for that!
Nowadays, we still get together with the same group to celebrate the New Year and we still talk about that special night. I don’t think we have ever laughed so much as we did on that New Year’s Eve.

I had been staring at the white walls of the video game store for about 2 hours since lunch. It was a very slow day. I glanced at the table in front of the store, and my heart ached. It was the donation table for the victims of Typhoon Meranti and even though I had donated what I could, I still felt sad whenever I saw the people on the TV suffering.
I was broken out of thoughts when the doors got open. Customers, finally.
She was a small girl about 10 or 11. her mother was accompanying her with a few plastic bags. I recognized her mom. When I was selling cigarettes on the street, I saw her selling clothes she made herself at the market.
The daughter just had a birthday and her mom finally had enough money to buy a PS3 and some games.
The girl half-jogged, half-skipped to my counter. She opened her backpack and pulled out a console (操纵板). Her mother handed me the bag full of games.
“Can I return this ”
“Sure sweetie, no problem.”
Since the console and the games weren’t opened, according to our regulation, I returned the money to the mom. She handed it to the girl. And the girl ran off as fast as her little feet could take her. I was about to ask when the mom, seeing my confusion, explained, “She wants to sell her birthday gifts, so she can donate to the victims.”
She was willing to give up what supposed to hers and gave to those in need. That’s real generosity out there. While I was watching her talking to the girl at the donation table, I was reminded that even though there are a lot of selfish people in the world, there are still those generous people just like little girl.

The Value of Failure in Success
In our pursuit of success, failure often seems like an unwelcome guest. We usually view failure as something negative, something to be avoided at all costs. However, failure is an inevitable (unavoidable) part of life, and it actually holds great value in our journey towards success.
Failure serves as a powerful teacher. When we fail at something, we are forced to reflect on our actions. For example, if we fail an exam, we analyze what went wrong. Maybe we didn’t study the right materials, or our time- management during the exam was poor. Through this self-reflection, we can identify our weaknesses and learn from our mistakes. This newly-found knowledge becomes a valuable asset (有利条件) (property), guiding us to make better decisions and take more effective actions in the future.
Failure also builds resilience (toughness). Each time we face failure and manage to get back up, we become stronger. Take Thomas Edison as an example. He failed thousands of times before inventing the light bulb. But instead of giving up, he used each failure as a stepping-stone. His perseverance in the face of repeated failures made him one of the most influential inventors in history. Similarly, when we encounter failure in our lives, whether it’s in sports, academics, or personal relationships, bouncing back from it gives us the mental toughness to handle future challenges.
Moreover, failure can change our perspective (观点). It makes us more humble and less overconfident. When we experience failure, we realize that we are not invincible and that there is always room for improvement. This new perspective allows us to approach tasks with a more open-minded and realistic attitude. It also helps us appreciate success more. After going through the hardships of failure, the taste of success becomes sweeter.
In conclusion, failure is not the end but a crucial part of the path to success. It teaches us, builds our resilience, and shapes our perspective. We should embrace failure, learn from it, and use it as a springboard to achieve greater things.
40.Why is self-reflection after failure important
41.How does failure contribute to building resilience
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Failure changes our perspective by making us more humble and more overconfident, helping us appreciate success more.
43.Though failure can be helpful, what can we do to avoid failure as much as possible (In about 40 words.)

Main character syndrome is a term that was born on social media to describe a mindset among people to view themselves as the lead character in their own life story.
People with main character syndrome often have some apparent symbols. They often prioritize their own needs and experiences, believe their feelings are the most important, create situations to draw attention to themselves and behavior overly dramatically to fish for praises.
They have a distorted view of reality, ignore or deny the consequences of their behavior. They clash with people with different perspectives or goals, as they view their storylines as the most important. They believe they deserve special attention or treatment and expect others to go out of their way to accommodate them. These have difficulty understanding or valuing the experiences and feelings of others, often showing little genuine concern for others’ problems. They often view everyone else as supporting actors.
Main character syndrome isn't inherently “bad” . On the positive side, seeing oneself as the protagonist in a life story can foster a sense of purpose and motivation. It can encourage people to pursue their goals with determination and confidence. However, the negative aspects often outweigh the positives. This mindset can lead to self-centered behavior, difficulty empathizing with others, and a lack of genuine connection in relationships.
Exposure to movies, TV shows, and books focusing on individualism can lead people to see their own lives in a similar light. Social media also facilitate sharing personal experiences, often placing individuals at the center of their content. This emphasis on self-presentation and pursuing likes, comments, and validation can reinforce behaviors associated with main character syndrome.
Certain personality traits, such as narcissistic tendencies, can contribute to main character syndrome. People who naturally seek higher levels of admiration or have an inflated sense of self-importance may be more prone to this mindset.
Low self-esteem or self-worth, potentially leads to an excessive desire for external validation. Social and environmental factors, such as family dynamics, upbringing, and social environment can also play a role. People who are constantly reinforced or encouraged to focus on themselves may develop main character syndrome.
44.What is main character syndrome
45.What are the obvious performances of people with main character syndrome
46.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
★People with main character syndrome often pursue their goals with determination and the negative effects are equal to the positives.
47.What way(s) do you have to overcome main character syndrome (In about 40 words)

Why does one plus one equal two One possible answer is “It just does!” Math can seem like a world of rules you just have to follow, which makes it seem rigid and boring. Whereas my love of math is somewhat driven by my love of breaking rules, or at least pushing against them. Both of those impulses play an important role in advancing human understanding, and in particular mathematical understanding.
So rather than think about why one plus one is two, let’s go a little further and question whether it’s even true all the time. Sometimes, one plus one can equal more than two. If you and a friend each have enough money for one cup of coffee, together you might afford three cups if you have slightly more than needed individually. Sometimes, one plus one is just one, like if you put a pile of sand on top of another pile of sand, then you just get one pile of sand. And in some situations, one plus one is actually zero. If I say “I’m not not hungry,” that means “I’m hungry.” The point here is that one “not” plus one “not” is the same as zero “nots”.
Now, you might think that these aren’t really situations where one plus one equals something else, because they aren’t really addition, or because those aren’t really numbers. You’re welcome to think that, but that’s not what math does. Math instead isn’t really about getting the right answer; it’s about building good justifications. The solidity of math comes from not wanting to trust things, but wanting to jump and swing and know that our framework will hold up. One of the reasons the framework is so strong is precisely because we question it so deeply.
I hope that we will start seeing mathematics as a place to pose questions and explore answers, rather than a place where the answers are fixed and we’re supposed to know them. And I hope we will value those who follow their curiosity on a journey that may be slow and without a clear destination, a quiet walk through the countryside rather than a race to the finish.
48.Why does the author love math
49.What’s the result when combining two “nots” in the language example
50.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The solidity of math comes from not wanting to trust things, and questioning the framework deeply weakens its foundation.
51.What do you think one plus one equals Use an example in your life to illustrate. (In about 40 words)

Just like everyone, I have experienced ups and downs in my life. I am an aerospace engineer from India. I was told by my relatives, close friends and others that it was hard for a non-IT student to pursue a master’s degree in IT and graduate from a US university.
I had never taken courses related to computers or programming. I was never interested in being a programmer, but things changed. I became so captivated by the convenience IT has brought to our life that I made up my mind to chase a master’s degree in IT.
At first, I came across too many difficulties and ing from a middle-class family, the huge cost per credit was a big issue. My English accent was terrible. Most importantly, the course seemed impossible at first. Although I felt so discouraged and frustrated, I never thought of giving up.
Then I decided to choose my university because it promised its students to help them learn practically. During my first month, it was difficult to understand the Americans’ accent and finish my assignments. But I never gave in. I walked two miles to the university every day so that I could use my travel money to buy a meal. I started looking for jobs and I got an offer to work as a student assistant, which meant lifting benches and chairs every day.
I took all these challenges as my chances, and I believed that hard work was my strength. Right now I am graduating with a GPA of 3.96/4 and a job offer from a multinational company that has asked me to start right after graduation.
When you have a dream to realize, there is nothing that can stop you. All you need is the diligence and persistence. Hard work always pays off. Having a determined will is also necessary.

From young adulthood, our belief of what makes a good friendship changes very little, but our ability to maintain one does. It’s a poignant(令人心酸的) reality. We know what it means to be and have friends. But after we graduate from college and go our separate ways, we’re often unable to find the time and energy to maintain valuable friendships. Like anything else in life, if we want to remain friends with someone, it requires a little work.
According to psychologists, there are four basic behaviors necessary to maintain the bond. And they hold true whether we’re 17 or 70.
Communication promotes the first two essential behaviors: openness and supportiveness, both necessary for a close relationship. We must be willing to open up and share our lives with our friends, letting them know how we are doing. Similarly, we need to listen to them and offer support.
Interaction is the third essential in tending to a friendship. The specific activity doesn’t matter. The important thing is to interact. My best friend, Jane, goes back to school to earn her master’s in social work. She now deals with a large number of patients which takes up a lot of her time. We email and talk on our cell phones at whatever hour we can fit it in. And we do, always, make time to fit it in, which is how we stay good friends.
The last and most difficult behaviour necessary for keeping friends is being positive. While it is important to be open with our friends, we should not over-share our negative feelings. At the end of the day, a successful friendship must be enjoyable. The more we feel good about it, the more we’re willing to put in the energy it takes to keep it alive.
57.What are the first two essential behaviors to maintain a good friendship
58.How do Jane and the author interact with each other
59.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
To keep a successful friendship, we should not express our negative feelings.

The famous marshmallow (棉花糖) test, where children were given the choice between eating one marshmallow immediately or waiting for two later, may have revealed more than just willpower — it might help explain why some people maintain sharper cognitive function as they age. A recent research suggests that the ability to delay satisfaction could help protect people from developing memory or thinking problems.
Think of your brain as a muscle that gets stronger with practice. Every time you choose a long-term benefit over immediate pleasure, you’re essentially doing a mental workout. This workout engages particularly the brain area that is responsible for planning, reasoning, and controlling urges. Regularly exercising self-control may help maintain cognitive function.
The science behind this connection is fascinating. When we resist immediate rewards, we stimulate “cool” regulation strategies in the rational (理性的) reasoning center of decision-making. In contrast, giving in to immediate satisfaction typically involves “hot” strategies in the brain areas associated with emotional decision-making. The more we practice using these “cool” strategies, the stronger our brain pathways become. This could help delay or prevent memory loss or thinking problems.
The good news is that these skills can be developed at any age. Simple strategies like setting specific goals, creating detailed action plans, and using monitoring techniques can help. Also, physical activity plays a particularly important role.
Remember, it’s never too late to start building these protective cognitive skills. The key is consistent practice and a conscious (有意识的) effort to make choices that prioritize long-term benefits over immediate rewards.
61.According to the recent research, what could the ability to delay satisfaction help
62.Which brain area does delayed satisfaction particularly work out
63.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
As we grow older, we can strengthen our brain pathways that could help delay or prevent memory loss or thinking problems.
64.Please share one of your experiences of delayed satisfaction. (In about 40words)

Grace Young grew up in San Francisco. When she was little, she used to watch her father shop daily in Chinatown for whatever he needed to make traditional Chinese meals at home. As an award-winning cookbook author, Ms. Young, now 66, has spent decades shopping the same way in New York’s Chinatown.
Ms. Young developed a passion for cooking at an early age. At 13, she started to sit in on cooking classes. After college, Ms. Young moved to New York and worked in a book-packaging company. In her 30s, she realized that while she had helped create more than 40 cookbooks, she didn’t know how to make the dishes that tasted of home. “I knew if I recorded all of my parents’ recipes, it would be a great gift that I could give my family and the next generation.” she says.
Yet what began as a recipe book became a kind of memoir (回忆录). Talking about food encouraged her parents to finally open up about their past, like the fact that her father had owned a Chinatown restaurant in the 1940s “It was really an amazing way to learn not only my family’s recipes, but also my family’s story.” she says. The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen (1999) launched (开始) Ms. Young’s work in preserving Chinese culinary (烹饪的) traditions.
Ms. Young has also devoted herself to supporting the restaurants in Chinatown. Since early 2020, Ms. Young has raised money to buy meals from Chinatown restaurants and deliver them to those in need. This year, instead of cooking at home for her husband and friends, she celebrated the Chinese New Year with various dishes from local restaurants in Chinatown. “If these restaurants don’t survive, Chinese culinary traditions in our city won’t survive.” she says.

Sudden changes and gradual changes affect students differently. Emotions run deep from sadness and hopelessness to hope and optimism. Whether the change is considered good or not-so-good, students are increasingly faced with the chaos, uncertainty and complexity of living in today’s world, which aren’t easy.
Helping students learn and apply evidence-based skills, which improve their resilience, is at the core of preparing students for an uncertain world and helping them transform challenges into something better.
Student resilience is the ability to recover from a challenge or great disaster. Being able to build this capability is complex and nuanced, but there are many science-backed ideas and strategies that help students increase their current level of resiliency.
Supportive relationships are considered the number one sign of childhood resilience. The key active core ingredient for resilience is the relationships the kids have to others who care about them.
Every student needs healthy and supportive relationships, especially in times of trouble or challenges, so they can feel supported and capable of beginning again, regardless of whether the problem is getting cut from their basketball team or having their school or family home burn down.
Researchers concluded that transforming challenges into something positive also helps people have better control of their emotions and more positive outcomes, which lead to more resilience. Subjects who didn’t transform challenges and perceived events as negative demonstrated less emotional control and resilience in the face of challenges.
Of course, there are tragedies, which are hard to transform, but most of the time, we can find something positive or constructive from a challenging situation. Say your daughter had her wisdom teeth out, and you asked her, “Is there anything good from this ” She may say, “Yes. I get two days off from school, and all the ice cream I can eat!” This is more resilient than her saying, “No. It’s terrible.” That’s not a wrong answer, but she can, little by little, learn how to transform her challenges and build that skill for her resiliency toolbox.
70.According to the passage, what’s student resilience
71.What’s the most important sign to develop the childhood resilience
72.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.

Four Colombian children survived a plane crash only to be lost deep in the Amazon rainforest for well over a month. This is how they survived this horrifying situation.
It’s most people’s nightmare: surviving a plane crash only to be trapped in a jungle with no way of contacting the outside world. But they survived. The children, aged 13, nine and four, as well as an 11-month-old baby, were flying with their mother from their village in the Amazon to visit their father in San Jose del Guaviare. The single-engine Cessna on which they were flying experienced engine problems and disappeared on May 1, 2023.
Bad weather prevented the army from finding the crash site for two weeks, where they then found the dead bodies of three adults, including the children’s mother. How did these children survive conditions that would be an unimaginable struggle for most adults They are members of the Huitoto Indigenous group and were raised in the jungle. As such, they have an intimate understanding of the rainforest. They know which fruits are safe to eat and which plants should be avoided.
Working with, rather than against, the Amazon, they survived on fruits and seeds, while feeding the baby water mixed with yucca flour that they found on the plane. While the children got on with the business of surviving, the Colombian army worked with Indigenous volunteers to find them. After 40 days of searching, the children were found and taken to recover at a military hospital in Bogota.
While many around the world have taken this survival story to be a miracle, others point out that it is the result of an ancient and intimate knowledge of the rainforest that has been passed down through Indigenous communities over the generations. Indigenous tribes have a close relationship to the Amazon, marked by a deep respect for the forest that provides them with shelter and nutritious ingredients. It is their close connection to and understanding of the rainforest that undoubtedly helped the children to survive.
74.What made the plane on which they were flying crash
75.Why did it take the army so long to find the children after the accident
76.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The children survived the horrifying situation by fighting against the Amazon rainforest.
77.What lesson can you learn from the story (In about 40 words)

You might not have heard of the "fresh start effect”, but if you've ever made a New Year's resolution, you're familiar with it. It refers to the human tendency to take action towards achieving a goal after a special occasion or key date has passed.
The fresh start effect is simple. Most people want to improve themselves in some way. When we hit important milestones, we're often likely to reflect: are we where we thought we'd be by a certain age Was this year a successful year, or did we waste it Annual landmarks like birthdays, or the start of a new year, signify a new time period and an opportunity to leave slip-ups behind and to set new goals for better behavior.
Research shows that anticipation of a new beginning is a key motivator for the fresh start effect. For example, people aged 29, 39, 49 etc. were 48% more likely to run a marathon for the first time. When they were approaching a new decade, they were more likely to search for meaning in their lives and try to improve themselves. The reason is simple. When we see our past self as separate from our current self, we feel it easier to introduce new goals and take action.
What's interesting about the fresh start effect is that we don't need to wait for big milestones to take advantage of this sudden dose of motivation. Studies show that the first day of each month and even each week can also inspire us. These days, known as temporal landmarks”, encourage us to step back and evaluate our current situation. And when we do this, we gain the motivation to be better: we become more driven and more productive. That is why people are more likely to stall diets or exercise plans on Monday, rather than the next day.
Fresh starts are exciting opportunities to learn from your mistakes and move forward. So if you're currently experiencing loss of motivation, questioning the meaning of your work, or just feel like you're stuck in a rut, why don't you use the fresh start effect in your own life
78.According to the passage, what is "fresh start effect"
79.Why is it that anticipation of a new beginning is a key motivator for the fresh start effect
80.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
> A fresh start like the first day of each week is a time when we forget about our mistakes and move forward.
81.Besides the fresh start effect, in what other ways do you motivate yourself in your life (In about 40 words)

Dumb phones are making a comeback
It is hard to imagine life without a smartphone these days. Leave yours at home and you may find yourself lost, moneyless and cut off from social contact. Yet a market is also emerging for phones that are deliberately pea-brained. These dumb phones — confusingly called “feature phones” — account for just 2% of phone sales in America. But demand is growing.
In 2016, a Finnish firm, bought the rights to relaunch the devices of Nokia, whose basic phones once dominated the market. It says it is now selling “tens of thousands” of flip-phones a month in America. In May it re-released the Nokia 3210, a mainstay of many millennials’ teenage years, in Europe. It even has Snake, a classic mobile game.
Dumb phones today do not merely copy those of the past, though. Startups offer minimalist devices of their own. One example is the Light Phone, which is shaped like an iPod and has an e-ink screen like a Kindle. It also allows users to add optional “tools” including a podcast-player and a directions app.
What explains the return of the dumb phone One factor is anxiety over the impact of smartphones — and social-media apps in particular — on young people’s mental health. That is why a first-class British school, announced in July that it would bar its students from bringing smartphones to school, and would provide them with Nokia phones instead.
But plenty of grownups are also choosing dumb phones out of their own will. Jose Briones, who moderates a forum dedicated to dumb phones on a social-media site, switched to the Light Phone after growing alarmed at his soaring screen-time record. Other smartphone addicts are instead cutting down the use of their devices either by deleting apps or downloading ones that control screen time.
Giving up the supercharged connectivity of a smartphone can lead to panic at first. Christina Dinur, another dumb-phone convert, remembers wondering what to do with herself when waiting in a queue without her smartphone. But, she says, she “settled into it really quickly”. For some, it seems, a dumb phone can be a smart choice.
82.How will people feel if they leave their smartphones at home
83.What contributes to the return of the dump phone
84.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Dump phones are making a comeback, yet startups are just reproducing the old phones.
85.Will you choose a dump phone Why or why not

Not long ago, my 12-year-old son, Lucian, and I were standing on the knife’s edge. I mean this quite literally. We had just completed a four-day hike in Maine that concluded by climbing Mount Katahdin. At its highest peak, Mount Katahdi has an extremely dramatic, mile-long ridge (山脊) known as the Knife Edge. It’s scary and quite dangerous: The mountain has claimed at least 17 lives. We knew we had to be careful, but surprisingly, the danger was part of the attraction. Lucian and I were both longing for a bit of risk.
We proceeded along the ridge and Lucian moved with such agility (灵敏) and balance. Then suddenly, right in the center of the Knife Edge, we encountered a group of bushes. And that’s when a killer bee stung (蜇伤) Lucian. Lucian was pale-faced, and he told me very calmly: “Dad, this is serious. I could die.” If this were a novel, the perfectly timed disaster, and my son’s calm yet serious remark would be cut by some clever editor. But this was not a novel. It was real life.
“What’s your favorite video game ” I asked my son. He shot me a confused look. I pressed him, asking him again. Unwillingly, he began answering my question-or more accurately, he began asking me why I talked about video games at a moment like this. By the time he finished, a minute had passed. He showed no signs of having an allergic reaction. I pointed this out to him. Another minute passed. And then, unexpectedly, we realized, he was totally fine.
When we returned home, Lucian and I both recounted our adventure—to my wife, his brother, and all the grandparents—until it quickly became a family tale. And it occurred to me that on some level, Lucian and I are both fond of exploring courageously. And this is how we found ourselves at the top of Mount Katahdin, crossing over the Knife Edge.

The way people hold to the belief that a fun-filled,pain-free life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness, then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.
As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment and self-improvement.
Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest,he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.
Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night's sleep or a three-day vacation. I don't know any parent who would choose the word "fun" to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.
91.According to the author, why does a bachelor resist marriage?(no more than 10 words)

During the years working in Peacekeeping Force(维和部队), I was sent abroad. As a senior analyst, my workdays were routinely twelve to sixteen hours long. Like all the old soldiers, we looked forward to receiving mails from home.
We soldiers received many “To any service member” mails from the States. Those mails were sent by the general public in our mother country to soldiers far away from home, as an expression of support. I never took any of those letters, since I wrote to my wife on a daily basis, as well as occasionally writing notes to my daughter Jenny’s classroom, and I didn’t feel I had time to write to anyone else.
After five or fix months of hearing from the mail—announcing the availability of “To any service member” mail, I decided to take a few of the letters. Because I planned, as time permitted, to drop them a line telling them “Thanks” for their support.
I picked up three letters, and placed them in my cargo pocket and went back to work. Over the next week or so, I started responding to the letters. When it came time to answer the third letter, I noticed it had no return address, but a California postmark, which made me think of home. I had missed spending Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s with my family. Homesickness seized me.
I opened the card and started to read the letter attached, which was a short one. About the third or fourth sentence down, it read, “My daddy is a soldier over there, if you see him tell him hi and I love and miss him.” This statement really touched me and made me miss my family even more. Looking down to the name of the sender, I sat in silence as tears filled my eyes.

Peking opera, known as China’s national opera, is a combination of music, dance and art and is widely regarded as a full expression of Chinese culture. Today, this art form is facing the danger of extinction as the younger generation is mostly interested in pop culture.
A Peking opera project for primary and secondary schools was launched by China’s Ministry of Education. But it has met with a cold reaction from the public. More than half of the 1, 000 respondents from ten big cities expressed doubts about the practical meaning of the project in the survey conducted by the Social Survey Institute of China.
The project plans to add 15 Peking opera pieces into music courses in 200 schools in ten provinces. The pilot programs will last from March to July next year. At present, teaching materials and video tapes are still in production, China News Service reported. The Ministry of Education hopes that the promotional course can help students better appreciate Chinese culture and cultivate a love for the mother country.
The surveyed people do recognize Peking opera as a comprehensive (综合性的) art form and a representative of the traditional culture. They also understand the purpose of the educational project. However, they wonder whether it is necessary for every student to learn to sing Peking opera, when they are already stressed from endless exams. In fact, most music teachers themselves know little about this ancient art form, and thus are not confident in arousing (激起) students’ Interest in its slow pace and abstruse (深奥的) lyrics.

When I was ten years old, on a family vacation to Las Vegas, I felt very uncomfortable. I was immediately taken to the hospital. It turned out that I had a big stroke(中风). It made me no longer able to talk, read, write and understand what anyone was saying to me. The entire right side of my body had no feeling.
I stayed in the hospital for months. There I met my favorite doctor. Her last visit was the most important visit of all. She sent me a box as a gift. Inside was a little toy figure of a soldier. She said, “He’s a fighter. You should be like him, David. As long as you try to be him, you can triumph over your illness at last.” She moved her arms as she was fighting to help me understand.
The next few years’ fighting was really hard. I went to lots of speech and physical treatments. I did learn to walk again, but my right arm remained unable to feel anything. Slowly, I learned to talk again. I started with one syllable(音节)-then more. It allowed me to go to a special school. But I couldn’t even spell my own name. Everything was about language and letters. Talking was hard. So was reading. I was sad. But I was still intelligent. Eventually, I decided to let life move on and do something for other stroke survivors.
To help them, I founded a nonprofit organization. I wrote a book on stroke recovery, which has become a guide for stroke survivors and their family members. To help people like me, I also keep speaking at national conferences and hospitals about how to better recover from the disease. Recently, I was invited to speak at a stroke conference to doctors and patients and tell my story.
Today, I can walk, run, and drive. But I still can’t use my right arm. However, there are so many things I can do. The fight to recover is hard. I’ll never, ever give up.

When I think of the hardest moments of my life, ironically many have turned out to be blessings. The most severe one was being pretty much kicked out of my. PhD program at the University of Georgia in 2016.
The program in Georgia turned out not to be the right fit for me despite my best efforts. The whole year was riddled with exhaustion, insecurity, fear, and exclusion. I was in therapy myself for most of the year to cope, and the only thing that made it tolerable was a lot of support from my family and friends.
I was utterly devastated when I went back home; it felt like my career was over. Fast forward to today, however, and I can see that getting driven out of the Georgia program was one of the best things that ever happened to me. In 2017, when I transferred to a doctoral program in San Diego, I began to thrive and now my business is doing exceptionally well. I am deeply grateful I studied in San Diego and happy that I didn’t stay in Georgia. It was great that I was driven out! As the saying goes, “What seems like good or bad news now can turn out to be the opposite in the future.”
Ironically, the research and writing training from the University of Georgia significantly helped me develop my academic, professional, and personal writing. I worked hard in Georgia and it paid off: The learning and growth I experienced were incomparable.
As my personal example demonstrates, life is a total rollercoaster. Every now and then you are able to discover a new high, a ceiling-breaking moment, whereas in other moments you may feel like you’re falling deeper and deeper into hell. While these experiences can be incredibly tough, they present us with valuable opportunities to trust life and cultivate personal growth and learning.

In the 1880s, long before she became her era’s greatest female explorer, eight-year-old Harriet Chalmers traveled through the Sierra Nevada on horseback with her father. When she was 24, Chalmers married Franklin Pierce Adams, and they set off for Latin America, where they covered 40,000 miles on a horse, by boat and on foot. When they returned nearly three years later, she gave a lecture at National Geographic and launched a 30-year career as a contributor.
Adams made it her mission to visit every country that was or had been a Spanish colony, and revisited the places where Christopher Columbus had stayed from Europe to the Americas. She traveled around Asia and attended Haile Selassie’s coronation (加冕礼)as the emperor of Ethiopia. During World War I, she was the first female journalist allowed to photograph the French trenches (战壕), where she stayed for months.
She wrote 21 articles detailing her experiences for National Geographic, more than any other woman published in the magazine’s first half-century. In those pieces, she criticized the injustices that she’d observed. “Where were the blessings the Europeans claimed they brought to millions of Latin Americans I could barely find them,” she wrote after a visit to Peru. “What have they not suffered under the control of the Europeans ”
Adams had no professional training as a geographer and had never been to college, but her color photo slides and adventurous travel style won her invitations to speak around the world, often from organizations that had never invited a woman in before. She was the third American woman asked to join the Royal Geographical Society in England. However, the New York-based Explorers Club gave her and other outstanding female adventurers the cold shoulder.
“Men have always been so afraid that some mere woman might get into their panels of discussion that they don’t even permit women in their clubhouses,” Adams once said, “much less allow them to attend any meetings for discussions that might be significantly helpful.”
Several female explorers decided to form their own club. In 1925 the Society of Woman Geographers launched with Adams as president. She served until moving to France in 1933, where she died four years later at 61.

Once upon a time, in a little village called Charmington, there lived a shy and unconfident girl named Lily. Lily was a kind-hearted soul. but her lack of self-assurance often led her to doubt her own beauty and worth.
One sunny day, as Lily wandered through the streets of Charmington, she came across a charming little shop filled with shining hair accessories (配饰). Among the treasures, her eyes were attracted by a lovely bow (蝴蝶结) that seemed to callout to her. When it comes to New York City, most people probably picture in their minds the attractive lifestyles of the rich and famous or think of Broadway, Times Square and other tourist attractions. However, there is another side of New York City that is far less known. The summer after tenth grade, I went with my group on a mission trip to New York City for a week.
I had always known the existence of poverty in major cities, but I had never seen it to a degree as high as we did there. We worked at several different locations with our small groups. One day, we served at a soup kitchen and what I saw astounded me. I couldn’t believe my eyes. We saw people from all walks of life. We met people who came there because they had no job, no home and no money. Another day, we volunteered at a homeless shelter. We helped people there do some cleaning and spent time talking to them and listening to their stories. It was incredible to see how thankful they were to us for just spending a couple of hours talking to them, or just be listening.
Every person we met on that trip had a unique story, and they were surprisingly willing to share. They were just in so much need to be listened to. Besides, whatever their stories were, there was a common thread we saw in them—hope. These were people who had nothing and yet they were so hopeful about their future.
My experience during that summer changed my life. I used to picture my future as containing a big house, fancy cars and a lot of money, but now I see my future differently. I hope it will be one where I can be helpful to others and give back to society. After college, I would really like to work for some sort of global aid organization that deals with the social issues, such as poverty and homelessness.

Growing up in San Francisco, Grace Young used to watch her father shop daily in Chinatown for whatever he needed to make traditional Chinese meals at home.
Yet what began as a recipe book became a kind of memoir. Talking about food encouraged her parents to finally open up about their past, like the fact that her father had owned a Chinatown restaurant in the 1940s. “It was really an amazing way to learn not only my family’s recipes, but also my family’s story. “she says. The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen (1999) launched Ms. Young’s work in preserving and sustaining Chinese culinary (烹饪的)traditions.

I started writing when I was around five years old. My father told me he would try and search for a good publisher to please my young mind. But of course, at that time, my writing was too immature and childish to be printed on paper and sold in bookstores!
It was when I was twelve years old and had almost given up the thought of people reading my stories that I received the best news of my life. My mother’s close friend noticed my change, so she did a bit of exploring along with my mother and found that there were some online sites where I could publish my stories!
I was extremely excited and immediately sat down with them and went through the list of websites. One of them beguiled me—— Yourstoryclub. I registered and became a member. Then I submitted a few old stories of mine and much to my delight, one of them got selected as Editor's Choice!
After I got the Editor’s Choice, I quickly signed up for a few more online spots where I could read and write stories. Unknowingly, I had completely abandoned Yourstoryclub.
But something was wrong. While sending my writings to the other sites, I didn’t really feel as good as before. The usual feeling of happiness I used to experience while getting a story published wasn't there anymore. I had lost that friendly feeling that always accompanied me whenever I logged into Yourstoryclub. This website had become a really good friend of mine. But the other ones were just too overwhelming and I felt like I wasn't ready for them.
I then realized the importance of taking one step at a time and not getting too ahead of myself. I needed to focus on one thing and should’t forget about it if I find another.

I used to be a selfish girl and I only thought of myself. I did not care about helping others, but only about my look, clothes, money and grades.
One day, I was suddenly influenced by my neighbor, who is now in college, and ended up wanting to volunteer for others. He had so much fun with volunteering and told me that he felt extremely good after helping others. I hoped to get the same results, for I felt worthless everywhere then. I viewed almost everything in a negative way, and I figured I had to experience something that would make me appreciate things that I had.
I volunteered at the nursing home for a year where my neighbor volunteered. I brought snacks, coffee and games for the elderly patients, talked to them while sharing snacks, and played games like chess and checkers with them. Because they were Koreans, they often had trouble communicating with the helpers who were hired to help them. I sometimes translated things for them and offered to be their translator whenever they needed help.
By volunteering at the nursing home,I changed a lot. I realized how lucky I am to speak both Korean and English and that I should help other people learn Korean as well. I had learned many life lessons through volunteering. By helping others, I felt needed in society. Not only did it boost my confidence, but it also allowed others to benefit from it.
Volunteering is a great opportunity to improve oneself, others, and the whole society. So if you ever have the chance, volunteer! It's something you won't regret

I am Linda from the USA.About six years ago, I decided that I needed to improve my fitness. After months of circuit training at the gym, I thought it might be fun to go to work by bicycle. I lived about 12 miles from work, so this was a reasonable and serious try.
After thinking it over, I finally reinforced my determination and rode to work. It was hard, but I enjoyed it. At lunchtime, I thought it might be cool to cycle into the city to eat. However, I discovered my bike had a puncture (轮胎穿孔). This upset me a bit as I was not fully prepared to be dealing with such problems on day one. Eventually, I got the puncture repaired and set off. But in a hurry, I ignored to tighten the front wheel nuts! About 2km down the road, the inevitable happened. While jumping a gutter (排水沟), the front wheel separated from the forks and I crashed hard onto the pavement.
I don’t really know how long I just stood there, bleeding and wondering what to do next. Suddenly, a white truck stopped and a one-armed man appeared. Without even asking, he placed my bike into the back and guided me to the passenger seat. He asked me where I wanted to be taken. Confused, I asked him to take me to my workplace, which he did. He unloaded my bike and locked it up for me in one of the bike lockers. Then he drove off without a word.
Soon Carrie, a co-worker who returned from lunch, discovered me and took me to the hospital. I turned out that I had broken a bone in my left hand. A few days later, I was able to thank Carri in person. However, I never saw that my mysterious one-armed man again.
Now I am always carrying a full repair kit and trying to go out of my way to assist other cyclists, and even motorists, who are in trouble. It’s my way to give a little back and show kindness that was shown to me.

Too Far Away from It All
A TV series in England, Away from It All, has surprised everyone by becoming a huge success with young people.
Its success is surprising because its main character is a shepherd (牧羊人), and the series is about the relaxing lifestyles of people who live in the country. There is none of the action that we usually see on TV. There are also no stressful moments, busy offices, or crowded cities. Away From It All is set in the peaceful English countryside and tells simple stories of people’s kindness
The director of the series says its success is a sign of teenagers suffering from stress. He says that watching Away from It All helps teenagers forget about the pressures of exams and homework, and the troubles that fill the world. He also claims that it’s a good sign that today’s youth are switching to happier TV series, as it shows they would like a happier and healthier life.
Although the series’ success might have a good side, many teachers and parents are worried. They say that some of their students and children are becoming couch potatoes (电视迷) and are using Away from It All as an excuse for not completing homework. Some students have even refused to study for exams because they say that they can only achieve happiness by avoiding stressful situations completely.
One mother, Lucy Linney, said of her son Patrick, “Before he started watching Away from it All, he loved challenges and volunteered every afternoon. But now he has become a couch potato. His grades have dropped and he no longer volunteers. He says it doesn’t matter as he just wants to ‘get away from it all’.”
And what do the experts say Paula Ray, a doctor, says that TV can influence young people’s lifestyles. But she says that if a young person reacts as strongly as Patrick, it’s likely that there are other reasons for his change in the behaviour.

Growing up in San Francisco, Grace Young used to watch her father shop daily in Chinatown for whatever he needed to make traditional Chinese meals at home.

In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N.Y. — Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood — traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff’s granddaughter.
Why did they go then Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken.
They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickenden’s book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls’ decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed (牵涉) drilling through the huge Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism (坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: “When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.”

Science has a lot of uses. It can uncover laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good’ at what it does that there’s always a temptation (诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.
Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature What are the sources of character And why are some people happy and successful while others aren’t
To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of disciplines (学科). Considering this, you might expect the book to be a dry recitation(背诵)of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unorthodox (非常规的), and perhaps unfortunate, way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader’s attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.
On the whole, Brooks’ story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks’ attempt to translate his tale into science.
39.What is the main idea of paragraph 2 (no more than 10 words)
40.Why does Brook use a story to introduce scientific theories ( no more than 15words)

When Simon Cane was in the second grade, he began learning about all the ways humans have an impact on the environment and really took those classroom lessons to heart in a way that set him apart from his schoolmates at his elementary school, P. S. 81, in the Bronx. “He told me we drove too much and made too much pollution,” his dad, Jonathan Cane, told Runner’s World. So Simon convinced his parents to start hanging their clothes to dry, taking the stairs instead of elevators, and other “green” measures.
“For much of kindergarten and the first grade I rode my bike to Simon’s school with him on the back,” Jonathan said. “We had a lot of fun being outdoors. We’d stop to give our dog treats and generally enjoyed it.” As Simon got bigger, though, it wasn’t practical for him to ride on his father’s back, but it also didn’t make sense to ride together — both because of safety concerns and because there was no place to put away Simon’s bike. So, most of the time they drove the 1.5 miles to school.
But in 2019, when Simon was going into the third grade, the 8-year-old came up with a new way to help the planet: running the 1.5 miles to P. S. 81. And Jonathan promised his son he’d join him for as long as he wanted.
“We did a test run one day in August, and decided to give it a go. To be honest, I thought he’d blink after it got really cold or rainy, but he never did,” Jonathan said. He recalled one day when the weather was particularly bad. “It’s really raining out there today,” he told Simon. “And Simon said, ‘Well then we’re going to get wet!’ He took pride in toughing it out, and it became a really fun family routine.”
Since the start, Simon has run with his dad and their black dog, Lola, and has even inspired his mom, Nicole Sin Quee, to join in. They soon became known as “the family that runs to school”.

Winning a significant science award is a big deal, especially if you are 12 years old. But Marine Gill, a girl from Fresno, California, won the top award in the Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (SJIC) for designing a fire detection system superior to existing ones.
Marine’s inspiration came from a fire that destroyed a restaurant in her neighbourhood during the spring of 2023. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detecting device(设备), and yet it still burned down.”
After she studied fire statistics, Marine spent over half a year developing a fire detection system that could have prevented the fire. Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air, Marine’s thermal(热的) imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
With a thermal camera and a tiny computer, the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning. The hardest part was the programming. “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed. It was a really big challenge I had to go through,” she said. The final device outperforms traditional smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Marine wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors.
“The top winners have , exhibited boundless possibility,” Maya Franklin, president of Society for Science, said in the press release. “Their remarkable research not only reflects their talent but also puts a stepping stone to an exciting new future.”

There’s a difference between being nice and being kind. Being nice involves being polite and pleasing to others. If you’re people pleasing, you’re placing an expectation on the person you’re being nice to that they respond to you in a certain way. Being kind is less self-serving. On the one hand, kindness involves being generous without expecting anything in return. The other half is the purpose behind the action. A kind person is acting out of sympathy and genuine concern for another.
The difference is intentionality, said Dr. Catherine Franssen, an associate professor of psychology at Longwood University in Virginia, noting that a kind person tries to really understand what someone else is going through.
Practicing kindness rather than niceness allows people to develop deeper genuine connections with others, said Franssen. The more you do it, the easier it will get to relate to others and build more meaningful relationships in all aspects of life.
The warm feeling you get from performing an act of kindness is your brain releasing a ton of feel-good chemicals. Franssen said being kind boosts production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter (神经传递素) involved in mood, including happiness. Kindness also releases dopamine, a brain chemical in charge of reward and pleasure. It’s the reason why doing one act of kindness feels so good that you want to do another.
Being kind gives the same health benefits, regardless of how big or small the gesture. Acts of kindness might feel strange and out-of-character at first. However, this feeling goes away the more you keep practicing. Soon enough, it becomes so familiar you’ll notice the benefits on yourself and others.
53.What does being kind involve
54.Why do you get warm feeling when showing kindness
55.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.

If you have a high school senior, right about now you’re probably experiencing two kinds of thoughts. The first is, “How did high school go by so fast ” And the second is, “Why did nobody tell me how expensive having a senior would be ”
Although we all know graduation day is unavoidable and - we may have been preparing emotionally for it all year long, it goes unspoken how much expense is involved in a high school senior’s graduation. Most of us are unprepared for it. In addition to all the college preparatory (预备的) costs like the SAT test or the ACT test, test preparatory services if needed, college tours, application fees, college housing, and admission deposits (订金) there are various “senior year” costs.
And then when the end of the school year eventually rolls around and you’re totally running out of money, you have to throw a graduation party.
I don’t know about you, but by the end of my son’s senior year, my entire family was exhausted mentally, financially, and even physically. It felt like we had just finished climbing up one of the highest mountains. And none of us had anything left especially in terms of the festive (喜庆的) mood and the financial ability to even think about throwing a graduation party.
Luckily, my son didn’t fly into a rage at the decision that I wasn’t holding a party for him. My husband didn’t mind it, either. My son understood me. He didn’t feel emotionally hurt or complain to me that he had missed out a graduation party.
Instead, right after his graduation ceremony, we all headed out to dinner together, just the immediate family. It was there that we laughed and enjoyed our dessert slowly, and talked of all the amazing adventures yet to come for our new college freshman.

Milan-based company Krill Design is changing the way we think about waste by creating furniture products from a plastic-like biomaterial named Rekrill. The special material is biodegradable, and can be used repeatedly.
Founded in 2018, Krill uses fruit skin, orange seeds and coffee grounds collected from businesses in Italy to create their unique designs, including bookends, clocks, bowls, and lamps. Each product is made through a four-step process. “There are a lot of companies that create designs, and we want to be different,” says MarcoDi Maio, director of operations at Krill.
Krill has worked together with some well-known brands and has also joined in a Co. ffee Era project with the government of Milan to reduce coffee waste produced in three of the city's neighborhoods. Krill has made products that match the color of food waste. For example, bright orange products are from orange skin and rich dark brown products are from coffee grounds.
Rekrill is as strong as wood and breaks down safely unless it's touched by water or acidity. It is also safe for fish to eat. But despite its eco-friendly benefits, Rekrill is more expensive than common plastic due to its complex production process. However, Krill hopes that as awareness of the environmental impact of plastics grows, Rekrill will be more widely used. Krill is exploring the use of other food waste, such as eggshells and leftover tomatoes and grapes, aiming to make its production process more efficient and cost-effective.
The company believes Rekrill is the material of the future. Every small step they take toward a sustainable world contributes to a more recyclable economy and inspires others to follow suit.

I am sitting in an empty football field after my last high school football game has finished a few hours ago. I’m the quarterback (前卫) on my team. But in fact that’s not true now. I was the quarterback, and that’s a good way to end a high school football career at a high point.
I’ve been sitting here by myself shivering in the cold and thinking back over the game and other games I’ve played in my life. I’m looking at the goal and thinking how it always seemed to reach out and pull me with a secret, magical force.
I was 8 when I first started playing football. My dad loved football and would practice with me at home- passing, catching, running. He tried to teach me everything he knew about the game. “Just remember: don’t ever give up.” “Stay in the game. Don’t lose your concentration.” “Go out there-and give 110 percent every time.” Well, that was a long time ago but I still hear his words ringing in my ears. I had a lot on my mind before the game today. I don’t like things to be an end, I guess, and this was the last game, and it was the league championship. I was talking to myself and reminding myself about what to do and not to do. I didn’t sleep at all last night. But when the game started my mind became empty. Everything dropped away from me. I just lived in this game, this moment. I didn’t hear the crowd; I didn’t feel the cold or the pain; I never felt tired. I just kept my eyes on the ball, and inside a soft white light showing me the way to the goal, which was a beautiful feeling.
It’s all over now and it’s really getting cold here. It’s starting to snow. The sun’s almost gone and I can hardly see the goal. Now it’s dark and I’m sitting here all alone. Well, I guess it’s time to say goodbye and move on.

The Power and Problems of Eco-Tourism
Eco-tourism gained its popularity over the past two decades. At its core, eco-tourism promotes sustainable travel practices that benefit local communities and protect the environment. However, like any significant trend, it is vital to analyze its impact and understand both its merits (好处) and potential shortcomings.
Eco-tourism emerged as a response to the damaging effects of mass tourism. Coastal towns were being transformed into commercial centers, but the luxury resorts rarely invested back into the community. Over time, ecosystems suffered, local cultures were overshadowed, and the very essence of these destinations was at risk. On the other hand, eco-tourism focuses on smaller groups, environmental education, and local engagement.
One of the primary merits of eco-tourism is its emphasis on environmental conservation. It helps protect endangered species and reforest areas affected by deforestation. Take the mountain gorillas of Rwanda for instance, tourism income has played a crucial role in their conservation efforts, bringing them back from the edge of extinction.
Furthermore, eco-tourism often ensures that local communities benefit economically. Instead of leaving profits to international corporations, the income often stays within the community. Local artisans, guides, and service providers receive a more significant piece of the pie, ensuring that tourism acts as a tool for socio-economic growth.
Yet, eco-tourism is not without its problems. The term “eco-tourism” is sometimes misused or overused. Some businesses might claim themselves as “eco-friendly” purely as a marketing strategy, without truly making sustainable practices.
In conclusion, eco-tourism represents a significant change towards more sustainable travel, placing emphasis on the environment and local communities. However, as with any major movement, it’s essential to approach it with a critical eye. By doing so, we can ensure that our passion for travelling doesn’t come at the cost of our planet or its inhabitants, but rather enriches both the traveler and the destination.
72.How has eco-tourism impacted the mountain gorillas of Rwanda
73.What are the merits of eco-tourism

Why companies are hiring "prompt engineers"
With the new generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, anyone can put in a prompt—type in a few words and get a result. But that doesn’t mean that the results will be relevant or accurate.
The key is putting in the right prompt. That’s why some businesses are now hiring prompt engineers-people with the skill, background and practice to talk to so-called large-language AI systems effectively and why many people expect prompt engineering to be a desirable skill for many kinds of workers to add to their resumes.
In general, the more detailed the request, the closer the response will come to what the user is looking for. But the most effective prompt engineering goes beyond adding detail.
For one thing, adding the right detail to get the best response is crucial. Also, there are many ways to guide how an AI system presents the information it finds, depending on the goal-tellinlg it to write in a certain style or for a certain audience, for instance. Each tool also has particular capabilities and limitations that users can learn to tackle. And the best results often come from an extended conversation with the AI, reacting to what it produces and asking for refinements.
Even for people applying to jobs that don’t clearly mention prompt engineering, having this skill could become essential for all sorts of roles. Art directors could use generative AI to outline ideas, and marketers could use it to develop new slogans. Software engineers could use it to find problems with their code. Lawyers could use it to research a piece of law. This is going to be a foundational skill that all of us need to know. The through line is when you learn a new skill, you can take it in any direction you like.

In October 2020, two friends and I started our gap year in Laos. We went across to Laos for cooking lessons, and it was there that I went into a middle school and helped with English lessons. Volunteering had always been put off by the idea of having to pay a company to work for nothing, but this one was free.
We moved onto Vietnam, and began to nonstop shopping, which usually we girls like. But I just wasn’t feeling it. I preferred doing something “better”, which I wanted to do. So. I left my friends and went ahead to Cambodia.
The day I arrived at an HIV orphanage (孤儿院) called House of Family, and I volunteered there before. I asked the doctor what happened to all the other orphans—there were only 30 kids at the orphanage but the popularity of HIV/ AIDS in Cambodia is among the highest in Asia. She explained that they were living at the rubbish dumps, so I went there.
I discovered children eating badly, sleeping on dirt and walking barefoot on burning poisonous waste. It was inhumane (不人道的) and unacceptable. So I came back to England, borrowed a video camera, raised 1,000 on Facebook and returned two weeks later to do the first Small Steps project. I gave boots, clothes aid, food and water to the children. Then I came home, edited the film, screened it and got an amazing reaction from the public.
I registered Small Steps as a charity and intended to repeat the project—called Around the World in 80 Dumps — on inhabited dumps around the world, to create awareness and help people. I am now the director of Small Steps, and the next project is in Nicaragua.
In the process of doing charity, I also realize that many of the people whom I have met as a volunteer are an unforgettable part of my life. Perhaps I received far more than I ever gave.

I was in a shopping mall recently, so I decided to go and get a cup of tea. As I was making my way to the coffee shop, I noticed an older gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby. I knew from first sight that he was in need of some kind of help. He had a little lunch stretched out in front of him and was wholeheartedly enjoying it. It was also rather evident that he had a problem with his right eye and probably couldn’t see out of it. I then joined the line and waited to be served.
Then it happened. One of the most beautiful gestures I have ever seen in my life.
There was a young man in front of me in the line who was also waiting to be served. Then the young man handed the server a twenty-dollar bill and requested an orange juice, as well as a favour. The server looked at the young man a little perplexed, not fully understanding the request. That was when the young man asked her to give the juice to the older gentleman eating his lunch outside on the bench, as well as the change from the girl except her tip. The young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she would be completely safe at all times. Subsequently, there was a wonderful exchange between the server and the older man in need of some attention. I only wish I had a photo of the smiles on both of their faces.
As I was pondering this event later on, I wondered to myself why the young man didn’t just perform this act of kindness himself. I suspect that deep down in his heart he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire others to do something for this older man as well. Absolutely beautiful!
There are many ways of thinking when we encounter someone like this older gentleman, in need of kindness and attention. Perhaps he’s just simply lazy and didn’t work hard enough in his life. Or he should have gone to school and made more of himself. But just maybe he needs a little helping hand. Thank God for this young man who inspired the others to goodness as well. Oh, by the way, the last words this young man told the server was, “There go I, but by the Grace of God.”
87.What was wrong with the old man (no more than 10 words)
88.What does the underlined word “perplexed” in Paragraph 3 probably mean (1 word)
89.What did the young man ask the girl to do (no more than 15 words)
90.Why didn’t the young man do the act of kindness himself in the author’s eyes (no more than 10 words)
91.Will you help others who are in need of help And why (no more than 20 words)

Growing up in San Francisco, Grace Young used to watch her father shop daily in Chinatown for whatever he needed to make traditional Chinese meals at home.

“Someone once asked me, ‘What’s the tool you would want to give any student’ And I said, ‘A mask and snorkel (潜水通气管) set,’’’ the ocean biologist Thys says in a video. And Thys explains, “Ninety-eight percent of the living space on this planet is the ocean. It’s worth a view.”
Thys has devoted her career to seeing the ocean, and to helping others watch the great diversity of the underwater world. A big part of what motivates her work is the chance to let people develop a sense of respect for the grandness of the ocean, and to get people to participate in efforts to protect endangered ocean ecosystems.
Since studying ocean biology, Thys has focused her research on how sea animals live. One animal she particularly studies is the ocean sunfish. “It’s so different from any other fish,” says Thys. “It looks like a mistake. Where does the tail go ” Thys adds. “The sunfish provides an entry point to understanding more about the behavior of creatures in the ocean, and about how environmental changes impact underwater ecosystems.”
Thys’s work also takes her above ground, where she’s looking at ways to create new connections between human populations and natural environments to help address social and environmental challenges. For instance, she’s working on nature’s effects on mental well-being.
Thys’s passion for her work is evident in every lecture, video, and public appearance she makes. Using the media, Thys encourages people to learn about the ocean and love it. Due to many ocean research projects and activities from the media, Thys is up to her neck in work every day. She could hardly spare plenty of time for a good rest. Thys’s devotion to her work as an ocean scientist and ecological warrior is infectious. She’s a role model and an inspiring guide to ocean life.

How do students spend their spare time after finishing their homework Watch TV, play computer games, or go outside to relax Here’s a good example.
Tim and Kerry Meek are both teachers. They live in the UK with their two daughters: eleven-year-old Amy and nine-year-old Ella. Recently, the Meek family has become the focus of the whole country after they completed 100 different outdoor activities in one year.
The Meek couple didn’t want their children to spend all their free time in front of the TV and become “couch potatoes”. So about one year ago, the Meeks decided that watching TV and playing computer games were not permitted. Instead, they set 100 tasks for the two girls to do outside. Although Mr. and Mrs. Meek are not outdoor activity fans, they took part in all the activities to encourage their daughters. It turns out that the two sisters really had a good time joining activities.
Every holiday and weekend, whether it’s sunny, rainy or snowy, the Meeks would set off to try the activities on their list, including hiking, sailing, climbing, skiing, and so on. The two little girls not only had a wonderful time, but also learned a lot of skills from the activities. They were even able to stand up in front of their school to give a talk for charity. “Our friends spend a lot of their free time doing things which are harmful to their health. Luckily, we’ve had the chance to experience something different.” Amy and Ella also helped their parents to draw up a new list of challenges for the next 12 months.

Why not take a more measured approach to a happier, healthier you From your office to your bedroom to your car, these small changes can have a big impact on your life.
Wake up ten minutes earlier. When you start your morning in a hurry, you set a stressful tone for the day. (I’m speaking from experience here.) Even ten extra minutes in the morning can help you feel more calm, collected, and ready to face the day.
Spend five minutes in silence or meditation (冥想). You’ll soon realize, whether it’s in the morning or evening, that five minutes of sitting quietly with your eyes closed feels a lot longer than five minutes. But just this short silence can foster a quietness that carries through the day. When things go off the rails, simply close your eyes and recall that earlier quietness.
Walk. Is there one trip you’d normally make in the car (to work, the gym, the store) that you can make on foot Walking saves money (good for you) and gas (good for the environment) and burns calories (around 2,000 steps equal one mile), which is good for your health.
Tell someone you love them. Life is never long enough to say this as many times as it should be said. Whether your mother, a friend, a significant other, or your dog, make it a habit to tell someone at least once a day that you love him or her. While it may feel strange at first, you will never regret it.
Stand (or sit) up straight. Good posture prevents back and neck pain and even build confidence. When driving, tilt (倾斜) your rearview mirror (后视镜) up a bit. You’ll have to sit up to see. At your desk, the top of your computer screen should be at eye level. Put a small cushion in the curve of your lower back, and your spine (脊柱) will become straight.

Wang Yi, who can’t walk or even communicate normally, has written eight books with one movable finger. Wang was born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫) in Jiangsu Province in 1989. Restricted to a wheelchair as she began to grow up, she even has difficulty eating and bathing.
However, Wang and her parents have stayed roseate throughout. Since childhood, Wang’s parents have been telling her to regard herself as a normal person even if she is physically disabled. She practiced performing daily activities repeatedly. With her parents’ help, she learned to live with her physical disability and aimed to be an out-standing writer. Before the age of 17, Wang completed nine years of compulsory education and acquired much literary knowledge. With the encouragement of her teacher, she became more determined to pursue her dream of writing.
Literature has become a medium for her to communicate with the world. Sitting in a wheelchair, Wang pursues her dream in her own way. Though she only has one movable finger on her right hand, she has managed to write eight books with a total of more than a million words. “For me, writing is not a tool to make a living, but my necessary life mode. Only when I am involved in writing can I feel complete.” she stressed.
Wang hopes that every disabled person can live without discrimination. “The sense of value and dignity comes from the efforts of the disabled themselves, as well as from social recognition, acceptance and equal treatment.” She also hopes that readers can experience the strength of life, the warmth of family and the beauty of the times when they are reading her works.

Sharing a room with a family member or a friend can be tough, but it becomes especially difficult when you're sharing it with someone you hardly know. Here are things you can do to help you deal with having a roommate, no matter who it may be.
First of all, you have to remember that you get what you give. If you are nice to others, then others will be nice to you as well. You also need to set boundaries for yourself and for the other person. So before your new roommate moves in, talk to him. Set the rules early on and discuss your expectations.
Remember that there are two things that make up any good relationship: trust and respect. The same thing applies to having a roommate. You have to respect each other. Suppose he has that new PS3 game that you've always wanted to try out, what should you do Ask permission first. If he says no, don’t take it against him. If he lets you borrow his stuff, take care of the item and treat it as if it were your own. Make sure that you return it in the same condition as when you borrowed it.
For chores that can be shared, you may want to divide it equally so that you don’t do all the housework. Take turns in washing the dishes. You may do it every other day or you may split the task so that you only have to do it in the morning and your roommate only has to do it at night.
When it comes to food and grocery items, determine what can be shared. Don't be too mean when it comes to sharing food. The advantage of sharing food is that both of you can save on time and food preparation.
117.Before your roommate moves in, what should you two do (no more than 10words)

Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart(购物手推车). They will, in a lifetime, push the chrome-plate contraptions many miles. But few will know—or even think to ask—who it was that invented them.
Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time he was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers lugging(吃力地携带) groceries around in baskets they had to carry.
One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business.
On June 4, 1937, Goldman’s first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn’t wait to see them using his invention.
But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try.
After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren’t using his carts. “Don’t you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket ” one shopper replied.
But Goldman wasn’t beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony(假冒的) customers.
As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come—those who came bought more. With larger, easier-to-handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.
Today’s shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman’s original model. Perhaps that’s one reason Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937—before the coming of the shopping cart.
122.The underlined words “chrome-plate contraptions” in Paragraph 1 refer to ______. (No more than 3 words)

When Brantley Harrison and her family rescued a tiny, injured squirrel back, then released her back into the wild, they didn’t expect to ever see her again. Nine years later, however, little Bella, they called the squirrel Bella, still comes to visit them almost every day — as long as snacks are provided, of course.
As a baby, the terrible attack made by an owl (猫头鹰) left Bella near death, she was carefully taken in by the Greenville County, South Carolina family, and raised by them alongside three other squirrels named Larry, Curly, and Moe. Bella stayed with the Harrisons until she had healed successfully thanks to a regular diet of fruit, nuts, and baby food, and was ready to jump on the trees in the forest. The sweet squirrel never goes too far from her adopted home, though, and stops by to say hello whenever she can, despite how much time has passed.
“Bella sits right at the front door waiting for someone to notice she has come by for a visit. If no one notices her, she will jump over to the dining room window to wait for someone to see her,” Brantley told The Dodo. The little lady just isn’t ready to part with the family that succored her life. Whenever she stops by, she asks for nothing more than a handful of nuts.
What is the most amazing part A few years after Bella’s original stay at the Harrison house, she found her way back to them with an injured foot — and a belly full of babies — spending another few months of recovering. “It was truly amazing to watch the baby I raised raise her own babies,” Brantley said. Are you aged between 14 and 19 years old Do you care about your local environment Would you like to help make the area you live in better, cleaner, safer and friendlier If your answers are ‘yes’, ‘yes’ and ‘yes’, then read on! A local organization is carrying out a project, giving money to groups of teenagers who want to become active citizens. Here are a few easy things you could do to get started.
Meeting the neighbors. Everybody needs good neighbors. Knock on people’s doors and find out what they would like to improve in your area. Set a date for a meeting and then make some plans together. If you don’t want to go round to their houses, then you could always put a note through their doors.
Neighborhood watch. It is very popular in the UK. If you go away on holiday and leave your house, it’s very nice to know that a neighbor is keeping an eye on it. It’s a good way to make the area you live in safer.
Lending a hand. There are often elderly people living in the neighborhood who may not be able to do the things that you can. Offer to do their shopping once a week, look after their gardens for them or maybe walk their dogs!
No littering. Nobody likes picking up other people’s rubbish, but a clean street can make all the difference. Go out once or twice a week and see what you can find. You never know, one day you might find something valuable!
Just tell us what you want to do. Then we’ll send you more information.

When I was 10, my friend Sydney suffered from a brain cancer. Sydney fought against it, but the cancer did not respond to the treatment, and could not be removed. Sydney died at the age of 11.
After her death, I felt sad and discouraged. I decided to turn these negative emotions into positive actions. When I was 15 years old, I founded the Pink Polka Dots Guild (PPD) with two friends. My goal is to raise enough money to find a cure for brain cancer, which is the second most common cancer in children.
Over the years, PPD had held fundraisers (募捐活动) across the city. The first Pink Polka Dots Guild event, a garage sale, just raised $900, but our latest fundraiser, the 2012 golf tournament, brought in over $73,000. In the past five years, we have raised almost a million dollars to help do a research on removing brain cancer.
I’ve been shocked by the public recognition that PPD has earned. It received an award from President. This great honour raised awareness and money for our cause.
The efforts that we have made has truly helped cancer research. PPD has provided start-up funding for scientific discoveries, such as “Tumor Paint”, which illuminates (照射) cancerous cells so that doctors can remove them with amazing accuracy. The discovery appeared in Time Magazine. I was very proud to have helped fund the research of this life-saving technology.
Pink Polka Dots has inspired me to be an activist. My experience has taught me that with devotion, it is possible to make a difference in the world. The determination that Pink Polka Dots set off in me has carried over to all aspects of my life, making me a competitive speaker and a devoted volunteer.

Experts agree that avoiding situations that make us anxious can actually make things worse in the long run. Getting out of something you don’t want to do might make you feel better in the moment, but you will still feel anxious the next time you’re asked to do it.
Push yourself
While leaving your comfort zone isn’t easy, it can be very good for you. That’s because anxiety tends to go away when you start doing the things that make you anxious. So try to face your anxiety and fear and see what happens. You might find you have the skills to deal with it. Next time you’re in that situation, you might feel less nervous.
10
As an experiment, try doing something that makes you nervous. Start with practising little things like answering questions in class. Whatever you do, you’ll find that it gets easier over time. That’s because by practicing the things that make you nervous you are actually improving your ability to easily handle them.
11
Don’t try to relax by watching television or visiting a website. Try a deep relaxation that has a physical effect on the mind. For example, doing things like yoga can also help you stay calm.
A.Practice a lot.
B.Relax yourself.
C. Don’t avoid something.
D.Being nervous is uncommon.

How to be a Responsible Person
Being responsible is an important quality that results in personal growth and harmonious relationships. Here are some practical ways to be a responsible person.
12
Doing just the things you are asked to do is responsible. But to show that you can care for yourself and others, you need to do things before you’re asked. For instance, maybe you notice that no one’s taken out the trash today. Don’t just leave it for someone else to do. Do it yourself. Alternatively, maybe no one has made plans for dinner. Get a plan together, and make dinner for everyone.
Show maturity in relationships
Don’t let your relationships fade away. Organize gatherings or host events to show your responsibility and to show you are actively trying to spend time with them. When problems come up in relationships, try to find a way to solve them instead of blaming the other person.
13
Start by doing what you need to get done first, and then you can relax and have fun afterward. For instance, if you need to do the dishes but you want to go outside, do the dishes first. Sometimes, you may think you don’t have enough time to get your chores done, but you likely do if you put down your phone, tablet, or computer, because social media can drain a lot of your time without you even realizing it.
14
Whether you’re still in high school or you’re an adult, you should have goals for your money. That way, you have something to work towards and a reason to put money away regularly. Besides, make a budget. Don’t spend more money than you have and avoid getting into debt.
A.Develop good hobbies
B.Manage your time well
C. Handle your money wisely
D.Take care of yourself and others
15.将下列语句(A、B、C、D和E)按题号排序,构成一个符合逻辑的完整语篇。
A.So, the phone box is becoming a thing of the past. Poor Clark Kent will have to find somewhere else to change!
B.Besides, anyone who happens to leave their mobile phone at home will still have no use for a phone box because they are unlikely to remember the number they want to call.
C. And even if we could remember a number and needed to call it urgently, it would still be more convenient to borrow a mobile from someone else than walk around looking for a phone box.
D.Where does Superman get changed these days In the comics and earlier films, Clark Kent would pop into a phone box to change into his Superman costume. But these days, phone boxes are hard to find.
E. The main reason for this is simply that we don’t need them anymore. Almost everyone these days carries a mobile phone with them. It is certainly more convenient to take out a mobile and make a call at the touch of a button than to press a series of long numbers on a telephone.

It is often said that you can not change the environment, but can change yourselves. As the saying goes, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Indeed, the key to success lies in one’s mind. The difference between winners and losers is simple. Winners attribute blows and difficulties to a lack of personal skills or experience, placing importance on internal factors and make continuous efforts to improve and move forward in the right direction. Losers, however, blame on the injustice of opportunity and environment, and focus on external (外部的) and uncontrollable factors. As a result, they often get stuck, complain, wait, and eventually give up.

Ask your special-needs students to draw a picture of the problem. For example, a problem might ask students to determine how many dogs there are if two were in the park first, then three more joined them. Your students can draw two dogs first, three dogs second and then count them to find the answer. Read the problem clearly to your students and give them time to draw.

Nowadays, buying books online has become more and more popular. And it does have many advantages.
One of the most significant advantages of buying books online is the convenience it offers shoppers. Unlike traditional stores with limited operating hours, online bookstores are open 24/7. This means you can shop for your favorite books at any time that suits your schedule. Whether it’s early morning or late at night, you can look through books on online bookstores without leaving home. Furthermore, buying books online avoids the need to travel to physical stores. You can save time by simply accessing an online bookstore from your computer or mobile device.
Another reason to buy books online is the vast selection available to customers. Unlike physical stores limited by shelf space, online bookstores can offer an almost limitless variety of books. With such a diverse selection available at your fingertips, you can find books that may not be available in local bookstores.
Also, one of the unique advantages of buying books online is the ability to access user reviews (用户评论) and recommendations. Online platforms often provide customer reviews for each book, allowing you to read others’ opinions before making a decision. These reviews can provide valuable insights into the quality of writing, plot development, or overall reading experience. By making use of these resources, you can make better choices when selecting your next book.
In addition, buying books online often provides opportunities to find great deals and discounts (折扣). Online bookstores frequently offer competitive pricing due to lower costs compared to physical stores. This enables them to pass on savings to customers, resulting in lower prices for books.
29.Why is self-reflection after failure important
30.How does failure contribute to building resilience
31.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.

Some of the most popular programmes on British television, all with their regular millions of loyal viewers, are ‘soaps’ such as Coronation Street, Eastenders and Emmerdale. (A ‘soap’ is an informal word for a ‘soap opera’, which is a television story, in daily or weekly episodes (连续剧集), about the daily lives of the characters in it.)
In every soap there is the inevitable gossip, and there is the essential character who brings misfortune on himself — or herself, the spiteful woman who hates the success of her sister in marrying a man with money and whose childish behavior splits the family.
To some degree, of course, the regular episodes provide many people with an adult kind of comic, rather like Dickens’ serialized novels did. At times, the actions and characters in them seem quite realistic; at other times, they go to the other extreme and show actions that look as if they are straight from the pen of the best fiction writers. But perhaps the fall into clearly fictional comedy or tragedy is necessary to remind regular viewers that their daily amount of ‘soap’ is no more and no less than a shot of fiction, and that the characters are not real.
Certainly life is never dull in a soap. If one of the adolescents buys a motorbike and a young child lives round the corner, you can bet the two will meet in an accident. If two people fall in love and get married, you can be sure that a friend will cast an insult on the character of one of them, enough to break up the marriage. After all, this is not life; this is a soap! Reality makes way for fiction. The viewers who think that they are watching even a reflection of reality only bring disappointment to themselves. But there are still viewers who follow the comings and goings of the characters on screen with unreasoning faith, believing that the events are real when characters are injured or ill, or even die, and send cards or flowers with best wishes, congratulations or sympathies.
What many of us find difficult to understand is just why soaps have become so popular

At 25, Emily Carson was living what many might call a successful life. She had a stable job at a marketing firm, a comfortable apartment in the city, and a network of supportive friends. But something always felt missing. Growing up, Emily had a deep love for music. She would spend hours at the piano as a child, but over time, life’s demands took priority, and her passion for music was slowly pushed aside.
One cold winter evening, as Emily walked past a music store, she felt an old familiar pull. She wandered in and found herself staring at a beautiful grand piano. The memories flooded back. That night, Emily made a decision that would change her life: she was going to learn music again. But this time, it wouldn’t just be a hobby—it would be a central part of her life.
Emily’s first piano lesson as an adult was both exciting and frustrating. Her fingers were stiff, and the notes on the sheet looked like a foreign language. But she had learned an important lesson from her career in marketing—success comes from perseverance, “I might not be good now,” she thought, “but with consistent effort, I will improve.”
Week after week, Emily practiced. Some days were tough, and she wanted to quit. But every time she sat at the piano, she reminded herself of why she started—her love for music. Slowly but surely, she improved. After a year of practice, Emily played her first full song without any mistakes. The sense of accomplishment was remarkable. Her hard work had paid off, and her heart felt full again.
Beyond the piano, this journey taught Emily something invaluable. It wasn’t just about mastering an instrument; it was about reigniting a part of herself she thought was lost. She realized that no matter how far off course life takes you, it’s never too late to return to the things you love.
Now at 30, Emily balances her career with her passion for music. She’s even started teaching piano to young children in her spare time, hoping to inspire in them the same joy she rediscovered.

Cori Laemmel is one of the paragon, thanks to her theater program in Nashville, Tennessee. When her students and their parents found out that the school was in danger of shutting down, they all came together to surprise her with support and love.
Cori is the artistic director at The Theater Bug where she’s written and produced 10 plays. Before her career at The Theater Bug, she has directed and produced numerous other productions at theater companies in Nashville as well as in California.
Cori’s achievements are certainly admirable, but it’s her spirit and love for her work, and her students, that makes her stand out. Her program at The Theater Bug sees around 350 kids every year who are able to learn singing, dancing, and acting at a young age. Traditionally, kids have to wait until middle or well into high school to take part in theater programs.
In 2020, The Theater Bug is, sadly, losing its physical space because of a shortage of money. Knowing this, the students and their parents (including country singer, Dierks Bentley) teamed up with “Good Morning America” (GMA) to surprise Cori with a $20, 000 check to put towards the program.
The surprise went off wonderfully, and Cori couldn’t help but thank her students and the people around them that made it all possible. She told GMA, “From raising the quality of the Bug to the art they’re making and the kindness they’re putting into the world, they’re simply the best. ”

It’s strange, but I don’t really remember much about the hurricane (飓风) itself. It all happened so quickly. I was sitting in my room with my cat, Smartie, on my lap, when the roof just flew off. All of a sudden, there was sky where the roof had been. I was so frightened that I just froze.
Mom cried to get out quickly, but it was already too late by then. The rain was coming down so hard and so fast. Our street turned into a river in seconds. We were going nowhere.
At first, I was pleased we could stay at home, but soon it got really tough. Without a roof, staying inside was too dangerous. There was water everywhere, but we couldn’t drink any of it or we’d get really sick. We just had drinking water that was sent to us by helicopter, but it was never enough. It was August, so it was really, really hot and it smelled so bad everywhere!
I just spent the days watching the boats going up and down the street and looking out for Smartie. He had disappeared the moment the storm hit.
Living in the open air, we became breakfast, lunch and dinner for the mosquitoes. But Mom said that whatever happens, we should always try to see the good side of things. It was difficult to stay positive, though. We had lost our home and everything in it, including Smartie. All we had left were the clothes on our backs. But as Mom kept on reminding us that we were all together and safe, Mom’s words made us feel better. I remember us all lying under the mid night sky and looking up at the stars. Because there were no lights, we could see the Big Dipper, the Little Dipper and the Milky Way. It was amazing! Even though we had lost a lot, moments like those gave us hope for the future.

To have a deeper understanding of the biodiversity (生物多样性) of southwest China’s Yunnan Province, Wild China Film, an organization, started a project to take pictures of giant trees in southwest China’s Yunnan. In fact, they started the project to photograph Chinese giant trees as early as February 2018.
Last September, the organization took a picture of a Taiwania flousiana (秃杉) in Baoshan City, Yunnan.
“It needs a large amount of water for giant trees to grow well”. According to a photographer, Southwest China is a place where some of the county’s tallest trees can be found.
The Wild China Film photographers saw the giant Taiwania flousiana after they arrived at the Gaoligong Mountain National Nature Reserve on September 14 last year.
At first, a professional climber climbed the tree and made sure that their activities followed the requirements for ensuring the protection of the trees.
After the climber found a proper climbing path leading to the top of the tree, a photographer slowly started to climb the tree by following the same path. 最终这个摄影师发现这棵树有72米高。This is the tallest giant tree on Eurasia (亚欧大陆) that has been exactly measured (测量) and photographer by artificial climbing. The professional climber discovered more than 10 kinds of plants living on the tree trunk during the climb.

66.What made the plane on which they were flying crash
67.Why did it take the army so long to find the children after the accident
68.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The children survived the horrifying situation by fighting against the Amazon rainforest.

Discovered by Amateurs
Some astronomers spend their entire careers looking for new discoveries in space, but a 10-year-old Canadian girl found one on her first try. In January, 2011, Kathryn Gray, who often studied stars, was looking at recent pictures of outer space and comparing them to pictures taken years earlier. The pictures were just thousands of tiny spots of light, but Gray spotted a star that looked different in the recent pictures. Could it possibly be a supernova (超新星) Usually a supernova is brighter, and it becomes visible through a telescope due to the brightness. Later Gray’s discovery was confirmed, and she became the youngest person to discover a supernova.
Throughout history, important discoveries in astronomy have been made by amateurs. An early example is William Herschel, who discovered Uranus in 1781. Uranus had been observed before, but expert astronomers thought it didn’t belong to our solar system. When Herschel saw it with a telescope he had designed and built himself, he realized that it was orbiting the sun. This meant that Uranus was a planet. And so, the map of our night sky was changed forever.
Then in 1930, a major discovery was made by a 24-year-old man, a farmer’s son, with no college education or formal training in astronomy. Clyde Tombaugh had built a homemade telescope using instructions from an article in a boy’s magazine. He used to draw detailed pictures of the surfaces of Mars and Jupiter. He sent the pictures to Dr. V. M. Slipher at the Lowell Observatory, who was so impressed and offered him a job on his team. Within a year, Tombaugh discovered a ninth planet, Pluto. It was regarded as a planet for 76 years, but scientists decided in2006 that Pluto didn’t meet all of the criteria for a true planet. It was then considered to be a dwarf planet.
John Dobson is another influential amateur astronomer because he enabled so many others to take up astronomy as a hobby. In 1956, after constant attempts, he built a powerful telescope out of low-cost materials, such as paper tubes used in construction. With affordable tools like Dobson’s telescope, more amateurs today have the technology that is needed to make discoveries of their own.

Studies show teaching children how to cook at an early age helps with reading comprehension and fine motor ability, in addition to learning about nutrition and food safety. In 2015 Stephanie Drewry was looking for a cooking summer camp for her three children. To her dismay, she quickly realized such a camp didn’t exist.
“I have my degree in education, but I had been staying home with my kids, ” Drewry says. “I love working with kids, so I just decided to take a spare bedroom and turn it into a one-room cooking school called Sprouts Cooking School. ”
The school grew in popularity so quickly that Drewry realized she would need more space outside her home for the classes. In 2017 she moved Sprouts into a 1,400-square-foot storefront (临街店面) in Carmel, Indiana. As demand grew, Drewry opened another Sprouts in the same area in 2022.
“Our classrooms are built with kids in mind. The worktops (操作台) in the classrooms are slightly lower than normal to fit in with their height,” Drewry says. “All of the cooking facilities are domestic ones. I wanted to have them feel like cooking in their own home.”
The school offers activities targeted at kids aged 3 to 13. Younger kids might make cookies while older ones are cooking soup and meatballs. There are birthday parties and summer camps as well. The fun part of the activities is that the kids can eat or take home whatever they make. They can also enjoy themselves in the themed classes like Harry Potter or Winter Wonder-land Baking. With all these activities, the school is extremely popular.
Teaching kids, especially those picky eaters, to cook helps a lot because they’re more willing to eat something made by themselves. More importantly, it is also about releasing children into the world with a life skill they’ll need as an adult when they’re no longer in their parents’ care.

Should AI replace real actors
When you watch a hit film, there’s always a great mix of everything you enjoy. Explosions! Special locations! Amazing performances! Famous actors! However, AI could soon change all that, with digital copies replacing human actors and CGI in place of real locations.
Hollywood was rocked recently by an AI program called Sora. Type in what you want to watch, and it creates a video in one minute. This is possible because the program has been fed thousands of hours of videos. It just searches through them for patterns, and then uses this learning to create new content.
As it develops, this technology could allow filmmakers to greatly promote their creativity. All they need is to write down their idea and AI will create it. This will make it much cheaper to make films. AI might even help to create films to meet your personal tastes, by taking your viewing history and making a movie specifically for you.
Actors in the US recently expressed their concerns that their jobs will be replaced by AI. But many scientists argue that AI can’t be truly creative, as humans are. Because AI programs create “new” content based on what they have been fed. As AI films copy from each other, this could lead films to be more similar and more boring over time.
“Human feelings must always come first,” says Avatar director James Cameron. AI actors can never recreate the feelings that humans can. We will get uncomfortable when we see something that’s almost — but not quite — human.
What do you think Should AI replace real actors Or do films need a human touch (人情味)

Doctors in Bristol can send patients on a free course from this month, which uses stand-up comedy to help patients who are fighting with trauma (创伤). The course was pioneered by a comedian, Angie Belcher.
It’s believed that comedy is in every one of us, and we are all born comedians. Every night we come home from work and tell our family what our days were like, but on the way home we’ll work on the details, and try to make our stories funnier to amuse our families. According to Angie Belcher, professional comedy education is to give people the tools to make the stories better. The course is a combination of psychology (心理学), comedy and storytelling and it will last six weeks.
In fact, past traumas are perfect for comedy. Comedy doesn’t come from the happy, perfect moments of our lives, but from our everyday life events. People who’ve been through big life experiences, such as the death of a close friend and poor health, often can’t wait to share their stories, mostly because there’s always something strangely funny about the situation. Experts say that we can accept and honor the comedy of a situation, as much as the sadness of it. It’s a short period of rest from something unpleasant.
Angie, who has a master’s degree in psychology, says the course is for anyone who is ready to explore their trauma through comedy. It can be taken by people in recovery from mental health problems and people who’ve had trauma. There’s lots of one-to-one help in the room too.The comedians give people a hand to write their comedy and explore some dark times from their history.
While the course can’t take the place of medical treatment, talking about our trauma in a funny way indeed edy can help to build community. When we bring our stories alive for others, it makes other people feel less alone. Having our experiences mirrored back to us is hugely comforting.
85.Who pioneered the free course
86.How long will the course last
87.Where does comedy come from according to the passage
88.Your friend Peter is now going through a trauma. Would you like to advise him to take the course mentioned in the passage Why or why not

阅读下面短文,按照要求完成阅读任务。

Pearl Moss looked out her front window in Bethel Park, Pennsyvania. She was instantly worried. A major snowstorm over the weekend had dropped nearby a foot of snow in her driveway, and there was more on the way. She was recovering from shoulder surgery and didn’t have family members nearby who could help to dig her out.
A few hours later, there was a knock on her door. Moss looked out and was surprised to see two teenage boys with shovels (铁铲). David Shelpman and Aidan Campbell live in the same neighborhood as Moss and are on the football team at Bethel Park High School. Head Coach Brian DeLallo had emailed his’ team members on Sunday to inform them that their Monday’s workout in the school gym wasn’t going to happen. DeLallo also posted a notice on Twitter with some instructions: “Due to expected severe weather, Monday’s weightlifting workout has been canceled.” he wrote. “Find an elderly or disabled neighbor and shovel their driveway. Don’t accept any money — that’s our Monday workout.” Shelpman and about 40 other team members took their assignment seriously.

People have long noted the importance of physical activity. It can not only improve your appearance but also help to reduce the risk of some diseases, including heart disease, diabetes and even some kinds of cancer. But many people don’t know how to do exercise.
Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control released its first ever Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. To get the most from your exercise plan, experts say adults should get at least two and a half hours of exercise each week. More intense (剧烈的) activities reduce the suggested amount of time to one hour and fifteen minutes. And it doesn’t matter whether you exercise for short periods in five days or longer time in two or three days.
Most importantly, experts say people should choose physical activity that they find fun. This helps to guarantee that they stay with the program. According to them, walking tops the list. More than 79 million Americans walk to stay physically fit. Another popular form of exercise is jogging (慢跑). Jogging provides great physical conditioning for the heart and lungs. And it increases the flow of blood and oxygen in the body. Swimming is a third most popular sports activity in the United States. Swimming also presents less risk of muscle and joint injury because of the body’s weightlessness in water. This makes it a great choice of exercise for people with special needs, like persons who are overweight. Dancing can also be a fun way to exercise. This is especially true for those who see exercise as a necessary evil (坏事).
Whatever kind of exercise you choose, experts agree that you should start small first. Start by exercising ten minutes a day two times a week. After a few weeks, work your way up. You’d better increase your time to fifteen or twenty minutes, and increase the number of days.

Chad Pregracke is a modern-day leader and proof that one person can make a difference. What started as one man’s effort at age 23 to clean up the Mississippi River, has evolved into a cultural movement that had resulted in over 8 million pounds of garbage being cleaned out of America’s rivers.
The enthusiasm and leadership skills that Chad possesses have inspired more than 70,000 people to volunteer their time and resources. Growing up in Hampton, Illinois with the Mississippi River in his backyard, Chad has always loved the water. His family spent the majority of their time on, in and around the river. Chad’s first jobs were on the river as a commercial div er and fisherman. Working on the river gave Chad a first-hand and close-up look at the shores where there was poisonous trash here and there.
At age 17, Chad began calling government agencies to tell them about the problem. None of his calls resulted in government action and the trash problem seemed to be escalating every year.
Chad decided that it was up to him to make a difference and clean the rivers. At age 23, Chad founded Living Lands & Waters, a not-for-profit organization aimed at preserving rivers in America. Chad worked tirelessly and called businesses to ask for an appointment just to tell the story of what he was seeing along the banks of rivers. Chad heard no during every phone call and was near the emotional bottom.
After begging a receptionist at Alcoa, Chad finally secured his first appointment. Alcoa took a chance on the young river kid and gave him his first check for $8,400, enough to cover expenses for his first clean-up project.
Since 1998, the organization has grown to include over 10 full-time employees, a fleet of 4 barges (大型平底船), 2 towboats(拖船), 1 crane, 6 workboats, 5 work trucks, and a large box truck to drag trash.

Earlier this year, I was looking for part-time work. Moonmilk, a cake and ice cream shop nearby, was hiring, so I went in for a trial shift. I practised scooping (舀) ice cream for 20 minutes and talked to the manager for 40 minutes about our favourite pizza spots. I immediately knew this place was special. While I originally just set out to earn some extra money during the summer, the bonds and memories I made there turned out to be more valuable than any paycheck.
Once, a man who works for the union of the local movie theatre came in to place an order. He wanted a cake to celebrate a victory he’ d had in stopping the theatre from being evicted (驱逐) by its landlord. Moonmilk’s owner was touched by the story and refused payment for the cake. Later, the union leader— so moved by the gesture— delivered free movie tickets to Moonmilk staff.
The older women customers are among my favourites. They have a way of making you feel at ease; they often wonder if I’m okay and tell me I look tired. One regular, always alone and smiling, is kind and generous, ordering methodically (有条不紊地) and always declaring we have the best ice cream in the city.
There’s also the guy who comes in frequently to ask if we have the chocolate orange flavour— that we only ever have at Christmas. I always have to say no, but his persistence brings me joy, especially on days when I’m tired.
As with any job, there are unpleasant moments. My wrist often hurts from repeatedly scooping out ice cream, and it’s always annoying when a group of people come in and take way too long to order, holding up all the others waiting.
In the fall, my full-time job’s schedule becomes more demanding and I know I’ll have to scale back my shifts. I’ll miss the busyness of the summer season and will run into my favourite customers less often. The winter months are long and the owner has spoken about days when only three people come in.
But my experience working at this popular spot has helped me feel more connected to my local community. The interactions and connections I’ve made will sustain me until at least next summer. Hopefully, the orange chocolate ice cream has returned by then.
