First created in the Yuan Dynasty, the central axis of Beijing (北京中轴线) runs 7.8 km through the heart of Beijing. And in 2024, UNESCO added it to the world heritage (遗产) list.
On July 24, 2024, some international students went on a ride tour along the central axis of Beijing. They started at the Yongding Gate, the southern point of the central axis, and went north to the Drum Tower and the Bell Tower at the northern point. Although it was quite hot that day, the students could not hide (隐藏) their excitement after finishing the three-hour bike ride. They gave each other a high five.
“This journey is very good. It’s great to experience everything,” said Callum Deighton, a student from the University of York, Britain, adding that he was amazed by the historical buildings along the central axis.
Deighton attended a bike riding course (课程) started by the Peking University Summer School International 2024 with a group of students from different countries. During the one-month course in July, they had the chance to learn about bikes and the skills to help them ride better, while joining bike tours to explore the ancient beauty of Beijing.
Maria Lamb, also from the University of York, visited the Great Wall and the Forbidden City when she came to Beijing years ago, but she knew the city could offer (提供) more than she could ever think of. “The central axis of Beijing shows its culture. If you read between the lines of the buildings, you can recognize (辨别出) the history,” she said.
