A common claim states that a sheet of paper cannot be folded in half more than seven times. But is this true
In 2002, Britney Gallivan, then a junior in high school in Pomona, California, folded a single piece of paper in half 12 times. She currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most times to fold a sheet of paper in half.
The inspiration that led Gallivan to accomplish this was an extra-credit challenge in math class to fold anything in half 12 times. Her teacher asked the students to fold something thicker: a piece of paper.
Gallivan said “It was very frustrating, as I had many unsuccessful attempts at trying to fold different papers in half. I began to question if folding paper in half more than eight times could be impossible.” However, Gallivan recalled, “I knew I needed to understand what was limiting the folding progression.”
The equations (方程式) that Gallivan came up with calculated how many times a sheet of paper could be folded. She found that in order to fold many times, a long thin sheet is needed — the more a sheet is folded, the thicker the resulting stack becomes, and once the stack becomes thicker than it is long, there is nothing left to fold. She finally set her record with a sheet of tissue paper she found online that was 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) — more than three-quarters of a mile, or over a kilometer long, Guinness World Records noted.
“Working on the problem took a large amount of time and effort,” Gallivan said. “As frustrating as it was at times, I learned an immense amount from the experience, which has been valuable to me throughout my life in more capacities than one would expect.”
Since Gallivan set her record, others have made claims of folding a sheet of paper more than 12 times. “I anticipate that my current record will be broken,” Gallivan said.
24.What inspired Gallivan to accept the challenge
A.Peer pressure. B.Mathematics anxiety.
C.Academic requirement. D.Guinness World Records.
25.Under what circumstances is it impossible to fold a paper in half more times
A.The stack is as thick as it’s long. B.The paper is neither long nor thin.
C.The stack is thicker than it's long. D.The paper is longer than it's thick.
26.What can we learn about Gallivan’s efforts
A.It’s risky. B.It’s fruitless.
C.It’s meaningless. D.It’s energy-consuming.
27.What does the underlined word “anticipate” in the last paragraph mean
A.organize B.impress C.expect D.intend
English language learning and teaching are more than language rules and phonetics (语音学). Language learners who pay no attention to cultural backgrounds seem to meet many difficulties in understanding what native speakers mean. Cultural education makes the process easier.
It was during the 1960s when language experts began to place cultural education at the forefront of language learning. In 1974, teachers started to introduce it into the English language learning classroom. In the 1990s, Michael Byram and Carol Morgan published a report, which showed the importance of knowing the learners’ cultural backgrounds when teachers taught their students to study a foreign language.
If spoken story-telling is common in a student’s cultural tradition, reading a text may be a little bit difficult. So if the language teacher is familiar with the cultural tradition of this student, he or she may consider the student’s reading trouble as not a learning problem but a result of cultural differences.
There are many cultural differences affecting English language learning. The most obvious one is the native language itself. A student who follows basic language and grammar rules from his or her native language will have trouble learning English. Another cultural influence is learning or teaching style. All of these may cause different learning results.
Teachers should be educated in many kinds of instructions that could meet e very student’s needs. Classroom time should focus on understandable cultural education. Lessons about body language, eye contact and conversational language should also be the most important parts of the curriculum (课程).
28.What can we learn about cultural education in Paragraph 2
A.It has quite a long history. B.It faced a lack of teaching resources.
C.It worked better for English learners. D.It has developed in theory and practice.
29.The example in Paragraph 3 suggests that language teachers should_______.
A.encourage students with learning difficulties more
B.help students realize the importance of communication
C.learn about students’ cultural language backgrounds
D.set a good learning example for their students
30.What is suggested about cultural education in English teaching
A.Organize colorful after-school activities.
B.Introduce more ways of communication besides language
C.Teach grammar rules through more reading and writing.
D.Find the similarities between English and one’s native language.
31.What is the main idea of the text
A.Culture influences language learning.
B.Each culture has its features.
C.English teaching methods are changing.
D.People’s learning habits decide their learning abilities.
Singapore’s tradition of eating out in places called hawker centres is now recognized by the United Nations for its cultural importance.
A hawker is a person who sells food or goods and advertises by shouting to people walking by on the street. Hawkers are an important part of Singaporean culture. Open-air eating areas where hawkers sell their goods in low price are very popular. Famous chefs, such as Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay have praised them.
On Wednesday, a specialized agency of the United Nations, UNESCO, added the city’s “hawker culture” to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Singapore sought to have hawker culture added to the list about two years ago. Now that it has been recognized, Singapore must provide a report every six years for UNESCO. The report must show efforts the city-state has made to save and support its hawker culture. “These centres serve as ‘community dining rooms’, where people from various backgrounds gather and share the experience of dining over breakfast, lunch and dinner,” UNESCO said.
In the 1970s, Singapore cleaned up its streets so the city moved street hawkers to new eating centres. These areas were part of an effort to improve the island. Now, the centres offer many different low-cost meals to local people and provide a pleasing social setting. The 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians showed its stars enjoying meals at a famous night market. Some sellers even received Michelin stars from a famous restaurant rating system for their meals costing only a few dollars.
But, now the average age of the hawker in Singapore is 60 years old. Younger Singaporeans now want to work in offices. They are less interested in working in small restaurants. The COVID-19 pandemic (流行病) health crisis also hurt sales, preventing foreign visitors and locals from eating out.
32.What do we know about hawkers from paragraph 2
A.They are native Singaporeans.
B.They sell goods in the open air.
C.They like posting advertisements on the street.
D.They have good relationships with famous chefs.
33.Why is the film Crazy Rich Asians mentioned
A.To advertise the film.
B.To introduce the stars.
C.To show the popularity of hawker centres.
D.To explain a famous restaurant rating system.
34.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.The difficulties faced by hawker culture. B.The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.
C.The future of hawker culture. D.The average age of hawkers.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Hawkers support cultural diversity in Singapore.
B.Singapore makes efforts to promote its hawker culture.
C.UNESCO recognizes Singapore’s low-cost food culture.
D.Singapore is preparing for the protection of traditional culture.

You should focus more on personal interactions in real life. Can you hug your dad and feel his strength through the phone Can you kiss your mom goodnight over the phone 37 Cellphones just snatch these precious things away from you.
Your grades will go up. Leave your phone behind when going to school. Once you get home, don’t lie on the bed and text your friends. 38 Your grades will improve.
You need to give your mind a break. Constantly chatting on the phone puts too much pressure on your brain, which does great harm to both your physical and mental health. 39

I wasn’t someone who would shake at the thought of flying a plane. I was actually quite looking forward to it when my family bought me the “flying experience day”. I researched it online. Surprisingly, the little aircraft I was going to fly in could only go up to 3,000 meters, which is quite low considering that big jets fly closer to 10,000 meters. There was a short talk from the instructor about safety and the controls. My parents were amazed that something like that was available for teenagers like me, but I’m pleased it was. On the day, I was nervous, but my instructor was very calm and she took the controls as we took off. It only took two minutes for the aircraft to get high up. Even though we were flying at a high speed, I could hardly tell we were moving when I looked down. I’m now so into flying that I’m considering it as a career. I’ll need to become qualified, of course. The company that organizes experience days keeps sending me emails about train driving and other things, but I only want more of one kind of experience now!

67.I finally made a decision and called my parents into my bedroom. When my parents saw what I had found in the drawer they were wide-eyed and speechless! Then, they read the papers carefully and were moved to tears. When they asked, “What should we do ” I said, “Let’s take it back to the store and find her family.” My father nodded with a smile on his face and my mother hugged me warmly, saying “You are my pride, dear.” I felt very happy because I already knew right from wrong. We collected all the money and papers at once, putting them in the drawer. We rushed to the charity shop with the drawer in the hope to find the owner as soon as possible.
Though surprised, the shop owner helped find the family’s telephone number. Within a few minutes, the family all came over. When I showed them what I had found in the drawer, they couldn’t believe their eyes. The parents had tears in their eyes. They were still sad about the lady’s death and the father had just lost his job. It was easy to see that my act of honesty gave them hope. They showed me sincere gratitude from the bottom of their hearts. In fact, I had never felt better before. No new bicycle could have made me felt as good about myself as I felt that day because I passed a very important test—a lost and found test of my own character.
