It’s October of 2019, and I’m determined to write a short story for submission to a writing contest. I haven’t given myself much time to meet the deadline. My intention is to write about a mother and daughter living in Chicago in the 1960s. The mother in my story is wildly engaging, exciting — her imagination transforms the most ordinary hike into an adventure. My desire is to honor my own mother who always has the ability to see life everywhere. In my mother’s world, everything has spirit and everything is potentially alive.
I hope to write a sweet story despite the ways unpleasant events in her childhood always disturb her. But I’m an intuitive (凭直觉的) writer, someone willing to bow to the artistic impulse (冲动) and vision that can push us beyond our plans and intentions. When the scene that forms in my head is instead a dark memory from 1966, I allow the pen to write what I remember.
Ultimately, I allow the short story to deepen. I’m being pushed to write what I desperately need to explore, need to explore, now that I’m removed from the painful experiences my parents and I had that shaped my life for so many decades. It’s time to find my deepest truth through the wonder of fiction. The story, “Naming Ceremony”, is later published in the Missouri Review.
My mother gave me many gifts. The one I prize above all others is trust in the imagination, in a vision that sees beyond the surface the world initially presents. Creativity is my teacher, friend, and most effective survival strategy. I bow to its impulses and enter each blank page at full trust in the process will bring me closer to the heart of everything I seek to understand.

D. By centring on pleasant events.
26. What does the author explore in “Naming Ceremony”
A. Difficult experiences of her family’s past.
B. The impulse to find the deepest truth.
C. Challenges of living in Chicago in the 1960s.

27. What does the author think of creativity
A. It helps broaden her field of vision.
B. It is a must for successful storytelling.
C. It works in harmony with imagination.
D. It is a pathway to deeper understanding.

Humans have a long history of inventing names for elephants. There is Disney’s Dumbo, of course, and the famed elephant Ruby from the Phoenix Zoo, who is able to create paintings. But new research suggests wild African elephants may invent names, too — and use them to call and greet one another.
Most animals are born with a fixed set of sounds for communication. A few, such as songbirds, can imitate (模仿) other sounds they hear around them. Certain species of dolphins and parrots may learn to copy human words for objects in their environment. Now a study in Nature Ecology & Evolution reveals that African elephants engage in a type of communication previously unknown in nonhuman animals.
Researchers used machine learning to analyze 469 contact, greeting and caregiving sounds made by wild female elephants in Kenya and discovered that the animals used specific vocal (声音的) labels to identify one another. Instead of merely imitating an individual’s call to signal a particular elephant’s identity, they came up with an original sound.
Although humans still just have a basic familiarity with elephant communication, the researchers suggest the existence of individual vocal labels in these calls indicates a capability of abstract thinking. What’s more, studying such labels could add to our understanding of how human language might have developed. In complex societies where members often lose sight of one another — such as those of elephants or our ancestors — the need to identify others and attract their attention might have driven cognitive (认知的) abilities and language development.
“If you can name things without relying on imitation, then, at least in theory, it is possible for you to talk about a wider range of subjects because you could potentially come up with names for objects and ideas that don’t make any imitable sound,” lead author Pardo says.
28. Why does the author mention Dumbo and Ruby in paragraph 1
A. To introduce a study.
B. To generate a debate.
C. To draw a comparison.
D. To explain a phenomenon.
29. How do African elephants differ from most animals
A. They stick to a fixed way of communicating.
B. They are born with a human-like ability to learn.
C. They are more comfortable with social interaction.
D. They address one another with individualized sounds.
30. What can be inferred about vocal labels
A. They are unique to humans and elephants.
B. They may be crucial in early social interaction.
C. They lay the foundation for abstract thinking.
D. They lead to deep and new insights into ancestors.
31. What does Pardo say about the ability to name things without imitation
A. It is evidence of social complexity.
B. It signals high-level cognitive abilities.
C. It is the key to language development.
D. It allows for discussion on broader topics.

The term “work/life balance” is commonly used to describe how people manage both their professional duties and personal responsibilities. We have been taught to deal with these two aspects as if they’re in constant competition with each other. But what if we reverse the order What if we focus on life first, emphasizing health, personal development, and well-being before diving into work
This shift in language — moving from “work/life balance” to “life/work balance” — reflects a transformative shift in the mindset. It places the emphasis where it belongs: on life, with work integrated in a way that serves, rather than dominates, our broader sense of purpose and health.
When we discuss work/life balance, there’s always a hidden message. The structure of the phrase mirrors the structure of our lives — work often determines when and if we can enjoy personal time. Even the concept of “balance” suggests these two domains are equal in importance. However, when balancing a demanding job with a personal life, most of us have probably noticed work tends to overshadow everything else.
Therefore, introducing the concept of “life/work balance” is clearly in order. It invites us to rethink and rearrange our priorities. In this framework (框架), life contains mental and physical well-being, personal growth and relationships, and work becomes a component of it — not the other way around. Also, shifting the focus helps us recognize personal health and development are the foundation on which professional and sustainable success can be built.
After all, how can we truly thrive (茁壮成长) at work if our personal lives are neglected or destroyed We can then begin to measure success by how much life we are able to experience and enjoy while still contributing meaningfully through our work and finding fulfillment (成就感) in our careers. Consider this: Work can be a satisfying part of life contributing to the life we want to live but should not consume or become our identity. When our personal growth, relationships, and health are thriving, we are more creative, productive, and able to deal with challenges.
32. Which word can replace “reverse” underlined in the first paragraph
A. Maintain. B. Change. C. Ignore. D. Specify.
33. What is the implied message of work/life balance
A. Work equals life. B. Work interacts with life.
C. Work comes first. D. Work sets living standards.
34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The significance of life/work balance.
B. The rearrangement of life and work.
C. The science behind life/work balance.
D. The comparison between life and work.
35. What should people regard work as according to the author
A. A bridge to career success.
B. A mirror of our identity.
C. A support factor in the ideal life.
D. A motivator for self-growth.

In recent years, short-form video platforms have attracted a large and wide variety of users with the help of advanced recommendation algorithms (算法), which means information platforms are becoming more and more tailored to users. 36 _______
The most obvious is the phenomenon of “information cocoons (信息茧房)”, where users are kept away from diverse information and eventually become trapped in a single topic. 37 _______ Even worse, most online users have no idea when they get stuck in them.
Helping people to realize they are stuck in information cocoons and offering ways to help them escape requires a deeper understanding of how these states form. One mechanism that drives the system away from diversification and towards an information cocoon is similarity-based matching, which is the way that an algorithm tracks what people see and offers them more of the same. 38 _______ And that then strengthens the cocoons that restrict information diversity.
So, how can someone tell if they have become trapped in an information cocoon 39 _______ For example, initially, users have access to a diverse range of topics such as celebrities, sports, and more. However, as the interactions between users and the recommendation algorithm increase, their access is gradually limited to only a few of these topics.
40 _______ They can give the algorithm negative feedback on its choices — such as the thumbs down (拇指向下) on content that a user would typically give the thumbs up — and randomly explore other options. Even then, individuals can struggle to break out on their own. Government-level regulations are urgently required.
A. That relies on some insights into human-AI interactions.
B. Algorithms that use positive feedback increase this effect.
C. Despite the great success, they have caused some problems.
D. To escape from a cocoon, online users must change their habits.
E. It refers to a situation where like-minded people gather on social media.
F. The growing uniformity of the information accessible to them is an observable clue.
G. Information cocoons not only limit information diversity but decrease social possibilities.

I was always a quiet and ordinary student in school. During class, I often found myself in a really tough situation. Whenever the teachers started teaching, my mind just wandered off. I couldn’t listen carefully to what the teachers explained, so I couldn’t know what they said, not to mention doing homework. Without doubt, I was falling further and further behind, which made me really worried and depressed.
My parents were out of work these days. I had to take care of my younger brothers after school when my parents occasionally did odd jobs. The combination of academic difficulties and the heavy family burden(负担) created a huge amount of stress, which could have affected my mental health and motivation to learn. I still tried hard and never gave up despite all these difficulties.
However, the last straw(稻草) came when I got the mark in a test one day. It was disastrous. The score was far lower than I had ever expected. I felt like all my efforts were in vain(徒劳). This failure completely ruined my confidence in continuing my education. Therefore, I decided to drop out of school. I told Megan Hall, my headteacher, about this decision with tears in my eyes. Then, with a heavy heart, I left the school before she said something to me, not knowing what the future held for me.
It was early in the spring. There had been a little frost in the night, and a light mist still hung over the woods. When I got home, my younger brothers were sitting beside the table, waiting for something to eat. They stared at the kitchen doorway, hoping for a delicious meal. But as the minutes passed by, suspicion began to emerge. Maybe nothing could come to satisfy their hunger. Now my parents were not at home and what was worse, I couldn’t cook a meal for them because there was no food left.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
Suddenly I heard someone knocking on the door.
With the encouragement from Megan Hall, I agreed to return to school.

第四部分 作文
(一)应用文写作
When it comes to the book that shapes my growth, The Little Prince never fails to rank first. First published in 1943, this timeless classic is not only a children's book, but a profound exploration of love, friendship and even human nature.
Conveying deep philosophical ideas in plain language, it's taught me to value intangible qualities like empathy and understanding over material possessions. Moreover, it has inspired me to view the world with wonder and curiosity, and to bravely face whatever I encounter in my life.
In conclusion, it serves as a guiding light in my growth journey, leading me to a better future.
(二)短文续写
Suddenly I heard someone knocking on the door. I opened it only to find Megan Hall. She held a bag of groceries, smiling, "I thought you might need a little help." After I invited her in, she helped me prepare a meal, and talked to me about my decision to leave school. Megan's voice was gentle but firm as she spoke about the importance of education. She assured me that challenges are a part of life everyone must face and that I would definitely overcome them with perseverance and support.
With the encouragement from Megan Hall, I agreed to return to school. Back at school, I began to focus on my studies with renewed determination. Gradually, I caught up with my classmates. And my hard work paid off when I received my first improved test score, which boosted my confidence significantly.
