Three people were sitting around a table in a restaurant in Brazil. How much do you think each of them tipped (给小费)
The Briton asked, “It’s common to tip 10 percent, right ”
The American woman cried, “Oh, I was planning to leave 20 percent!”
The Chinese woman asked, “What’s a tip ”
Although it is not a tradition to tip in China, tipping is a big deal in the United States. There, it is common to tip about 15 to 20 percent of the bill.
Usually, people give tips to a waiter or waitress when they eat in a restaurant. The US tops the list of tipping—waiters and waitresses are expecting to get 15—25 percent of the bill. So if you order $100 in food, you are expected to pay your waiter at least $15, making your payment $115 in all.
Why is this Many waiters and waitresses get paid below the US minimum wage (最低工资), and tips make up for that. Some states pay their servers only $2.13 per hour.
It is not just for waiters, either. Hotel workers, hairdressers and taxi drivers also expect tips.
Tipping is also popular in some Southeast Asian countries, like Indonesia and Thailand. However, in Japan there is a no-tipping culture. If you try to give a waiter or waitress money, you may actually upset him or her.
39. What did the Chinese woman mean
A. She didn’t want to give any tip.
B. She thought 20 percent was not enough.
C. She didn’t know anything about tipping.

D. Because the US sets a minimum wage for every person.
41. Which country does not have a culture of tipping
A. Japan. B. Britain. C. Indonesia. D. Thailand.
42. What is the text mainly about

Drew and his parents were on an amazing driving trip. On the road they saw mountains, forests, oceans, and much more. Now, they were in the desert.
Out of the car window were only desert and cacti (仙人掌). Suddenly, Drew found something strange—some water a few hundred meters further down the road. But when he reached there, he found the road was dry. After seeing this several times, Drew asked his parents about it. His dad told him it was a mirage (幻景). “What’s a mirage ” asked Drew. “It’s a natural phenomenon (现象). What you see looks real but it isn’t really there.” his dad explained.
After some hours, they arrived at the Desert Museum. Most of the museum was outside. There was a big place for keeping hummingbirds (蜂鸟). Drew’s mom told him that the hummingbird is the world’s smallest bird, but it has a big brain (大脑) and a strong heart. There were also many different kinds of cacti. Artificial intelligence (AI) can now do amazing things. ChatGPT is an AI that can answer questions, tell stories, and do much more. But it’s very “thirsty”, said a new study.
When ChatGPT works, its “home”—data (数据) centers around the world—gets very hot. Workers then have to use water to cool them down. Cold water goes into pipes (管道) near the computers at these centers. Because the computers are very hot, the water turns into vapor (水蒸气) and goes into the air. The water needs to be super (超级的) clean. If they use seawater, it can eat away the pipes.
If you ask ChatGPT 20 to 50 questions, it needs to “drink” a 500-milliliter bottle of water. When people trained ChatGPT, it used 700,000 liters of water, said the study. This is the amount that is needed to make about 370 cars.
ChatGPT is not the only one that needs data centers. Everything you do on the internet needs data centers to work. There are more than 8,000 data centers in the world, said a report in 2021. The number is still growing. If AI keeps using a lot of water, we may have to “fight” with Al for water.
46. What does the writer mean by using “thirsty”
A. ChatGPT works just like people’s mouths.
B. ChatGPT needs water while working.
C. ChatGPT keeps learning to answer questions.
D. ChatGPT can do many things at the same time.
47. Why can’t people use seawater to cool down data centers
A. Because seawater is bad for the pipes.
B. Because it is hard for seawater to become vapor.
C. Because living things in seawater may eat the pipes.
D. Because seawater is too hot to cool down the centers.
48. How does the writer set out her idea in Paragraph 3
①By comparing one thing with another.
②By thinking of a thing as a person.
③By guessing an idea from certain information.
④By giving examples to make the point clear.
A. ②③④ B. ①②③ C. ①②④ D. ①③④
49. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. AI will stop using water someday to let people have enough.
B. AI may start a war against humans to get more water in the future.
C. People should control the number of data centers to save water.
D. There may be a competition for water use between Al and humans.

You may know about “junk food” like French fries. But do you know about “junk sleep”
A British survey shows that there are many electronic products in teenagers’ bedrooms. They are influencing teenagers’ sleep badly.
The survey was done among 1, 000 British kids from 12 to 16. It is found that 50% of them got just 4 to 7 hours’ sleep every day. But doctors say they need 8 to 9 hours.
Almost 25% of the kids said they often fell asleep while they were watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products.
“This is very worrying,” said Dr. Chris, a British professor, “We call it ‘junk sleep’. It means you don’t get enough sleep and the quality of the sleep is low, too.” The survey found that quite a few of the kids felt tired each day because of the junk sleep, especially girls between 13 and 16. Nearly all the teenagers have a phone, music player or TV in their bedrooms. And lots of them even have all the three.
Dr. Chris suggested that parents should help their children keep away from electronic products, and that teenagers should spend less time on the electronic products.
