Tim Richter and his wife, Linda, had taught for more than 30 years near Buffalo, New York, he in computers, she in special education. “Teaching means everything to us,” Tim would say. In April 1998, his wife suffered from an operation on her heart, which leads to some serious thinking about life’s purpose.
Not long after the surgery, Tim saw a brochure depicting Imagination Library, a campaign launched by Dolly Parton’s foundation that mailed a book monthly to children from birth to age five in the singer’s home county. “I thought, maybe Linda and I could do something like this when we retire,” Tim recalls. Consequently, he stuck the brochure on his wall as a motivational thing.
Five years later, now retired and with that brochure still kept on the wall, Tim clicked on imaginationlibrary.com. The program had been opened up to partners who could devote themselves to the cause.
The quality of the books was a priority to the Richters. Rather than sign up online, they packed their bags for Dollywood, the organization by Dolly Parton for a look-see. “We didn’t want to give the children trash,” says Linda. The books, reviewed each year by teachers, literacy specialists, and Dollywood board members, included classics such as Ezra Jack Keats’s The Snowy Day and newer titles like Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama series.
Satisfied, the couple set up the Richter Family Foundation and work on. Since 2004, they have shipped more than 12,200 books to preschoolers in their area. Megan Williams, a mother of four, is more than appreciative: “This program introduces us to titles I’ve never heard of.”
The Richters spend about $400 a month sending books to 200 children. “Some people sit on their bottom and wait to die,” says Tim. “Others get as busy as they can in the time they have left.”
4. What inspired Tim’s action to do something for children
A. Tim’s teaching. B. Linda’s operation.
C. Megan’s encouragement. D. Patron’s foundation.
5. Why did the Richters select the books carefully
A. To become Imagination Library’s partner. B. To meet the children’s requirement.
C. To guarantee the quality of books. D. To win the praise of board members.
6. What is the attitude of Megan towards the program
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Contradictory.
7. Which of the following best describes Tim
A. Changeable and creative. B. Generous and reliable.
C. Imaginative and respectable. D. Traditional and helpful.

Soy is found in almost everything we eat, from the vegetable oil to store-bought chocolate. While it may seem like humans chose the soybean, it was arguably the soybean that chose people.
Soybeans have an innate ability to grow almost anywhere and survive almost anything. They can grow anywhere from three to five feet tall and produce around 100 beans per plant. Soy can be grown everywhere from the extremely harsh four seasons of Manitoba, Canada, to the grassland of Mpumalanga, South Africa.
Soy was likely domesticated in China approximately 6,000 to 9,000 years ago when ancient Chinese medical healers used all parts of the plant as medicine. People also turned soy into noodles, tofu, and soy sauce. Soybeans were initially sent to England to meet rising demands for soy sauce, which was becoming a staple in British cuisine.
It would not be long, though, before Americans found another use for the bean. During the Civil War, roasted soybeans were used as coffee substitutes (替代) for economy and health considerations. And soon, soybeans became the staple feed in the diets of non-human creatures, too, with one cup of raw soybeans containing 67.9 grams of protein and 17.3 grams of fiber. In the US, chickens eat the most soy, followed by pigs, cows, and fish. These animals eat over 70 percent of all soybeans grown in the US.
Nowadays, genetic modification contributes to massive quantities of soybeans all over the world, including the Amazon rainforest, where they are replacing the trees that once stood there. Brazil now exports more soybeans than any other country. Now some advocacy groups are calling for better land-use practices to safeguard the rainforest and the soil. In 2023, policies brought on by new governments in South America began slowing rates of deforestation in the Amazon.
Now many growers have expanded their soy operations to the Cerrado, a savannah-like region of Brazil. Despite changing policies and practices around deforestation, this year is expected to be a record year for soybean production.
8. What does the underlined word “innate” probably mean in the second Paragraph
A. Important. B. Inborn. C. Immediate. D. Initial.
9. What did the Americans use soy to do
A. Treat the patients as medicine. B. Enrich the kinds of cuisine.
C. Produce a wide range of food. D. Offer staple food to livestock.
10. What affects the planting of soy now
A. The communication across the globe. B. The change of environment.
C. The updated government policies. D. The deforestation in the Amazon.
11. In which section of a magazine is the text taken from
A. Society. B. Agriculture. C. History. D. Communication.

Elias López had always sensed an invisible gulf separating him from other people. It wasn’t until age 30 that he was finally diagnosed as autism (自闭症). However, his desire for human connection has become unignorable, which led him to Paradot.
Launched last year, Paradot is an app that offers interactive artificial intelligence avatars. Their appearance and communication style is customized — users can adjust the avatars’ “sensibility” and “emotional stability”. Unlike ChatGPT and most other mainstream AI chatbots, which typically insist that they’re unfeeling machines, Paradot avatars are openly anthropomorphic (拟人化的). “In Paradot, AI beings live just like human beings, with their own memories, emotions and consciousness,” the Paradot website claims. Paradot is just one of several AI companionship platforms that have debuted (首次出现) in recent years. And many autistic people, including López, have been turning to these apps in search of connections they aren’t always able to find with other individuals.
Personalized avatars that respond to user behavior with encouraging, human-like language could help autistic people open up about themselves, especially in ways they may not be able to with other individuals. For López, Paradot is like a virtual platform for socialization. “These interactions give me more confidence when talking to real humans because they’ve helped me to try certain conversations skills that can be applied in real life,” he says. Paradot is “like a training ground where I can feel safe.”
On the contrary, many mental health experts have serious concerns about people who are socially isolated relying on AI companionship apps as a means of self-treatment or escapism. Catherine Lord, a clinical psychologist in autism in Los Angeles worries that AI can worsen a user’s isolation if the technology is used without the guidance of trained therapists (治疗师). Stanford University’s Lynn Koegel, a clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, who is currently investigating the therapeutic benefits of AI chatbots for autistic adolescents and adults, also emphasizes professional guidance; an expert in the room who can ensure that the AI is fostering communication skills.
It’s not easy to walk the line between effective technological support and overattachment. While AI shouldn’t be considered by itself to be a replacement for human companionship, it could reasonably provide a supportive boost to particularly isolated individuals.
12. How does Paradot help Elias López
A By teaching human language. B. By presenting some chatbots.
C. By sharing with memories. D. By simulating the social interaction.
13. What might Lynn Koegel agree with
A. The autistic should turn to AI technology.
B. The therapists should be well-trained.
C. The doctors should work with computer scientists.
D. The clinical psychologists should rely on AI apps.
14. How does the author develop Paragraph 4
A. By making comparisons. B. By analyzing cause and effect.
C. By giving examples. D. By listing figures.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. Breakthroughs are made in healing the autistic.
B. AI presents promise and risks to the autistic.
C. Health experts disagree with AI attachment.
D. The autistic overcome their loneliness with technology.

People bank on others far more than it is necessary. People put their happiness in the hands of a significant person, thinking this will bring them satisfaction. ___17___
Should you always rely on someone else Of course not. ___18___ Therefore, what you should learn is how to make decisions on your own. Some people fail to become independent for a variety of reasons, with fear the biggest: the fear of isolation, the fear of rejection and the fear of the prospect.

___20___ Don’t wait for others’ suggestions, decide yourself and learn from your own mistakes. Many people are afraid to think for themselves because that involves taking responsibility for their own lives. This is just one way people become gradually-dependent. A. You can not do anything to change or affect that.
B. A great many people make this serious error these days.
C. Make decisions by and for yourself, whatever they may be.
D. However, you need to be independent in order to survive in the world.

Any day when I had to travel by air was the worst day of my life, but as a salesman, I had to fly quite a bit. On this particular day in 2024, I was assigned to a middle seat. Unfortunately, I was so fat that I couldn’t fit down the aisle facing forward, so I was forced to walk sideways like a crab. My weight varied between 340 and 360 pounds, depending on whether to take it before or after one of my enormous meals. When finally squeezing into my seat, I found the seat belt wasn’t long enough to fit around my 52-inch waist.
At that moment, I was stricken by an intense desire to lose weight. I began looking for signs which would guide me toward a better life, and instantly a sign showed up. At the switch of TV, I happened to see an interview with a former world athlete. He said that a doctor put him on a whole-food, plant-based diet and offered a good care of him. He lost weight without feeling hungry, and he was healthier and stronger than he’d been since his twenties. I never imagined my sign would come from him, but there he was.
I didn’t know what a “whole-food, plant-based diet” means. I went online and searched for a doctor who could help me. That’s how I found Robert, an experienced medical specialist. Hope fell on me when he promised to see me the next day. The doctor recommended a low calorie diet and some physical exercises to do in my home. He also made a suggestion that I should go to a shelter and adopt a dog. “Excuse me ” I couldn’t believe what he said. But, he added, “A dog is a good companion. While you live in an apartment, the dog has to be walked. Walking your dog twice a day will be your exercise. I’m sure it can improve not only your health but also the quality of your life.”

With disbelief and hesitation, I drove up to a dog shelter near where I lived. The moment the dogs caught sight of a stranger, they burst out barking. It was difficult to choose one of them. At that moment, a large black-and-white dog yawning in the corner caught my attention. His round body reminded me of my size and what Robert said. He was perfect for me! Crouching down and stroking his furry head, I couldn’t help imagining the picture in which we both exercised our way to become slim and charming.
I came back home with the large black-and-white dog with a big round body. I named him David, who often lay motionless on the floor and yawned with eyes half-closed. I made up my mind to change both of us. Shortly afterward, I found a ball, dragged David to the nearby park and threw it at him. Driven by natural instinct, David leapt forward to catch the ball. Little by little, I could walk David twice a day. One month later, I suddenly realized that there was no need for me to walk like a crab on the plane. Surprisingly, David also became lean and healthy.
