Silbo Gomero is an ancient language of whistle that enabled people to communicate across long distances before the invention of the telephone or the computer. It's now being revived on mountainous Canary Islands and the island of La Gomera, where the usual language is Spanish.
The Canary Islands government is providing funding to help school children on La Gomera to learn this ancient whistling language as part of their heritage. It sounds like birdsongs and was developed thousands of years ago by islanders to enable them to communicate up to two miles across La Gomera's valleys.
In the past, Silbo Gomero has been passed down from parent to child, but the islanders felt embarrassed at this form of communication when they came into contact with the outside world and modern technology. It started to die out when the telephone arrived and the island opened to tourism. However, the government realized what was happening and decided to make sure that it would not be lost. So, since 1999 Silbo Gomero has been part of the school curriculum and now about 3,000 Gomero children spend at least 25 minutes a week learning it. This is enough time for the basics to be learned.
Probably originating in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, the language was brought to the island by settlers 2,500 years ago. It was adapted to Spanish speech patterns, but uses tones rather than vowels and consonants (辅音). These are whistled at different frequencies (频率) to produce over 4,000 words, making proper conversations possible.
The importance of the language is growing. In 2003 the island held the first International Congress of Whistled Languages. Research is now being carried out in all places to which Gomerans have traditionally emigrated (移居国外) and where forms of the language survive. The Canary government's Historical Heritage Department hopes to attract outside support so that it will continue.

When traveling to foreign countries, mastering the art of body language is key for perfect travel experience. As a body language expert, it's easy for me to see how we communicate with those around us without even saying a word.
I especially believe the importance of the universal language of body talk. At most times when traveling abroad, it is the only way that connects every human being, no matter the geographic location. A simple custom or sign of respect is vital to understand before taking flight to your desired destination.
For example, it is customary to simply eat the food that you have before you when we are out at a business lunch. In Asian customs, business lunches are strict. Finishing your plate or eating most of the food you ordered is considered rude in Asian culture.
“Body language teaches us everything about a person,” says Benjamin Wey, a professor at two European universities. “My professional career would be entirely different if it were not for body language and my understanding of it.” Frequently visiting both Europe and the US, Wey has come to understand that internationally, our ability to actively respect cultural customs becomes the currency within business. One key element that Wey has taken away from his travels abroad is “that all people want to be treated with respect”.
So, show your respect and learn more about the local customs and traditions or the spots on your route. Gather an understanding of what gestures or expressions are considered useful, and avoid those that may be offensive to your new friends.
Though we started with one language in common—body language, the cultures of the world have evolved (演化). It is important to be able to identify and appreciate these differences; it will make our world smaller as a result.
5.Why does the author think body language is important
A.It makes different cultures getting more alike.
B.It can effectively show your respect to others.
C.It allows us to connect with people anywhere.
D.It replaces the need for verbal communication.
根据第二段中的“I especially believe ... no matter the geographic location.
6.What does the passage advise travelers to do to improve their travel experience
A.Avoid making any gestures at all.
B.Finish the food you order in the plate.
C.Learn to use the local language fluently.
D.Show respect by following local customs.
根据第二段中的“A simple custom ... your desired destination. 和第五段中的“So, show your respect ... on your route.
7.What does the underlined word “offensive” mean in Paragraph 5
A.Rude. B.Similar.
C.Awesome. D.Practical.
答案:A
根据第五段中的“Gather an understanding ... to your new friends. 故选A。
8.What is the best title of the text
A.Cross-cultural Body Language
B.The Traditional Cuisine Culture
C.A Perfect Travel Experience Abroad
D.A Good Way to Learn Foreign Cultures
答案:A
故选A。
Certainly, there are many non-verbal cues that have completely different meanings in different cultures. One of the most important means of non-verbal communication in any culture is eye contact.
Eye Contact in Western Europe
On the one hand, the European customs of eye contact—especially in such countries as Spain, France and Germany—are similar to those in the United States. It is considered proper and polite to keep almost continuous eye contact with another person. __1__
On the other hand, Europeans often avoid eye contact in crowded public situations—such as while walking through a busy downtown or riding public transportation. __2__ This may happen when he is interested in them and try to express his interest by making eye contact. Therefore, it is important for visitors to understand the full meanings of what they may be suggesting by returning the eye contact given by someone else.
Eye Contact in the Middle East
__3__ But they do have similarities in their rules for the proper eye culture. Eye contact is much less common and considered less proper in many of these cultures than it is considered in the United States. __4__ These rules are connected to religious laws. Only a short moment of eye contact would be permitted between a man and a woman, if at all.
As you can see, it is important to know what eye contact communicates before you visit a new culture. __5__ Learn how to use eye contact and other body language wisely so that you are regarded as polite, and so that you can better connect with people in a culture that is foreign to you!
A.Be careful not to make eye contact with women.
B.And this is especially true in business conversations.
C.Such a returning eye contact will be considered impolite.
D.All Middle Eastern cultures cannot be grouped into one class.
E.Before you travel, you'd better check out about the country you plan to visit.
F.Yet, in a country like France, a stranger may feel quite free to look at others.
G.What's more, Middle Eastern cultures have strict rules regarding eye contact between the sexes.

Dear Tom,
I'm glad to know that you will travel to China. First, I'd like to extend my warmest welcome to you. With regard to the problems you mentioned in the last e-mail, I'm writing to offer you some information.
Body language varies from culture to culture. For instance, when talking to the elderly in China, it is typical of us to look down to avoid eye contact as a sign of respect, while this may mean lacking self-confidence in Britain. On the other hand, some gestures have the same meaning. We favor shaking hands, smiling or nodding the head to greet others, just as you do in Britain.
Hopefully, my information can come in handy for you. Wish you a good journey.
Yours,
Li Hua

根据第五段中的“Gather an understanding ... to your new friends. 故选A。
8.What is the best title of the text
A.Cross-cultural Body Language
B.The Traditional Cuisine Culture
C.A Perfect Travel Experience Abroad
D.A Good Way to Learn Foreign Cultures

Yours,
Li Hua
