第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)

A
“When studying foreign languages, don't forget about body language,” Anne Merritt said.
Something as simple as a gesture can show friendliness in one culture, embarrassment in another, impatience in a third. Even silence means different things in different places. If you want to avoid making some mistakes when traveling abroad, you should pay attention to the following.
Touch
Britain, along with many countries in northern Europe and the Far East, has a “non contact” culture. In those countries, there is very little physical contact in people's daily talks. Even touching someone's arm by accident is the reason for an apology. However, in the high contact cultures of the Middle East, Latin America, and southern Europe, physical touch is a big part of daily life.
What's more, there are different standards for the touch. In much of the Arab world, men hold hands and kiss each other in greeting, but would never do the same with a woman. In Thailand and Laos, it is a taboo (禁忌) to touch anyone's head, even children's. In South Korea, elders can touch younger people with force when trying to get through a crowd, but younger people can't do the same.
Eye contact
In most Western countries, frequent eye contact is a sign of confidence and attentiveness (专注). We may think that a conversation partner who looks away is either not listening to us or lying. Of course, this is not the standard around the world.
In many Asian, African, and Latin American countries, the unbroken (不间断的) eye contact would be considered impolite and rude. These cultures consider avoiding eye contact a sign of respect for bosses and elders. In these parts of the world, children won't look at an adult who is speaking to them, and nor will employees look at their bosses.
21.In Britain, when people are talking, they usually ________.
A.avoid eye contact
B.touch the others' arms
C.avoid physical contact
D.apologize for their mistakes
22.In southern Europe, physical touch is ________.
A.unnecessary B.impolite
C.dangerous D.common
23.What does this passage mainly tell us
A.How to have a good time abroad.
B.The importance of body language.
C.How to communicate with foreigners.
D.An introduction to some body languages.
B
As a young boy, I knew what people said was not always what they meant or were feeling. And I knew it was possible to get others to do what I wanted if I read their real feelings and responded suitably to their needs. At the age of eleven, I sold sponge rubber (海绵橡胶) door to door after school and quickly worked out how to tell if someone was likely to buy from me. When I knocked on a door, if someone told me to go away but their hands were open and they showed their palms, I knew it was safe to continue with my show because they weren't angry or threatening although they may have a cold attitude. If someone told me to go away in a soft voice but used a pointed finger or closed hand, I knew it was time to leave.
As a teenager, I became a pots and pans (锅碗瓢盆) salesperson, and my ability to read people earned me enough money to buy my first house. Selling gave me the chance to meet people and study them close and to know whether they would buy or not, simply by watching their body language.
I joined the life insurance (保险) business at the age of twenty. And I went on to break several sales records for my company, becoming the youngest person to sell over a million dollars' worth of business in my first year. I was lucky that the skills I'd learned as a boy in watching body language while selling pots and pans could be used in this__new__area,__and were directly related to the success I could have in any business closely connected with people.
24.What does the author seem to share in Paragraph 1
A.His present feelings.
B.His positive life attitude.
C.His language ability.
D.His earlier experience.
25.What does the underlined part “this new area” in the last paragraph refer to
A.The life insurance business.
B.The pots and pans industry.
C.The study of body language.
D.The selling of sponge rubber.
26.What was the key to the author's success
A.Listening to customers.
B.Arguing with customers.
C.Studying customers' words.
D.Reading customers' body language.
27.How does the text mainly develop
A.By following the order of space.
B.By following the order of time.
C.By giving examples.
D.By giving reasons.

Researchers say that they have understood the meaning of gestures that wild monkeys use to communicate. They say that wild monkeys can communicate 19 specific messages to one another with a “vocabulary” of 66 gestures. The scientists discovered this by following and filming groups of monkeys in Uganda, and examining more than 5,000 hours of recordings of these meaningful exchanges.
Dr Catherine Hobaiter, who led the research, said that this was the only form of intentional (有意识的) communication to have been recorded in the animal kingdom. Only humans and monkeys, she said, have a system of communication with which they sent a message to another group member on purpose.
Although previous research has shown that other animals can understand complex (复杂的) information from their partners' call, they do not appear to use their voices intentionally to communicate messages. This was a significant difference between calls and gestures, Dr Hobaiter said. “They are the only thing that looks like human language in that respect,” she added.
In one case, a mother presents her foot to her crying baby, meaning “Climb on me.” The little monkey immediately jumps on to its mother's back and they travel off together. “The important message from this study is that there is another species out there that can communicate in a meaningful way, so that's not unique to humans.” said Dr Hobaiter.
Dr Susanne Shultz, a biologist from the University of Manchester, said the study was praiseworthy in seeking to enrich our knowledge of the evolution of human language. But, she added, the results were “a little disappointing”.
“The limited ‘vocabulary’ of the gestures suggests either that the monkeys have little to communicate, or we are still missing a lot of the information hidden in their gestures and responses.” she said. “In addition, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animals communicate with their non verbal languages. So, it seems that difference still remains between human language and monkeys' non verbal communication.”
28.According to Dr Hobaiter, only monkeys and humans can ________.
A.memorize specific words
B.understand complex information
C.use voices to communicate
D.communicate messages on purpose
29.What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.Calls. B.Gestures.
C.Messages. D.Voices.
30.What did Dr Shultz think of the study
A.It was well designed but poorly carried out.
B.It was a good try but the findings were limited.
C.The evidence was reliable but the conclusion isn't new.
D.The result was disappointing and the methods were wrong.
31.What is the main idea of the text
A.The communication skills used by animals.
B.The smartest species in the animal kingdom.
C.A study on monkeys' communication gestures.
D.A breakthrough in studying monkeys' behaviors.
D
For the majority of people, watching movies is their favorite pastime. Even for the deaf, captions (字幕) make it possible for them to enjoy movies. But what about deaf children who can't read yet, or whose reading isn't fast enough to keep up with captions
Mariella Satow, 17, a senior student of Rugby School in the UK, ran into these questions and spent over a year developing SignUp to solve them. SignUp, launched in August, is a free-of-charge Google Chrome Extension that provides American Sign Language (ASL) captioning over videos on Disney+. It puts a small box with a sign language interpreter (口译者) in the corner of the screen while the movie plays.
In 2020, Satow decided to learn a new language, specifically ASL. “Normally, I learn languages by watching television shows with captions, but I found nothing similar for ASL.”
Realizing that some deaf children would come across the problem, Satow took action. Using her $3,000 she made from part-time job dog-walking, Satow employed an India-based company to help her design a coding system that could overlay ASL interpretation on streaming platforms. As of Nov.12, the extension has provided on-screen ASL interpretation for nine movies such as Moana.
“We watched Moana ... My 6-year-old daughter's face was priceless. She loved it ... It was the first time she had had full access to a movie. Thank you!” a user commented below on SignUp's Twitter account. Satow said that some teachers would use the extension in their classrooms and arrange movie nights for their students.
“My hope is we'll have a lot more movies interpreted,” she told the website Sag Harbor Express. “I'm hoping to expand to a more adult audience and to other countries—to make it as big as possible.”
32.What does SignUp do
A.Reduce the speed of captions.
B.Teach deaf children a sign language.
C.Offer on-screen ASL interpretation.
D.Provide captions in different languages.
33.Why did Satow develop SignUp
A.To earn money for her education.
B.To make ASL popular among the deaf.
C.To become a sign language interpreter.
D.To help deaf children enjoy movies better.
34.What's the attitude of parents and teachers to SignUp
A.Favorable. B.Negative.
C.Uncaring. D.Doubtful.
35.Which of the following best describes Satow
A.Brave and independent.
B.Kind-hearted and creative.
C.Friendly and honest.
D.Smart and humorous.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Daniel was the new boy in our school. The teacher assigned (安排) me to him. He couldn't hear or talk. So he had an adult with him. She explained what professors were teaching in sign language. Sometimes I got caught staring at him and my friends teased (嘲笑) me all day. I noticed him going everywhere all alone with no friends at all. Sometimes I felt worried, maybe even concerned.
We were assigned as lab partners and surprisingly he wasn't as bad as I thought. We would both sit quietly and do our work. But when it came to communication and his translator wasn't there, it was a mess. At first, I could barely understand what he was doing with his hands. I could see in his eyes that he was getting annoyed at me. From trying to communicate with sign language he moved to pictures and words. That worked well for both of us, but my drawing skills were not as good as his, so I stuck to words and gestures.
The second semester went by well and quickly. Daniel and I understood each other pretty well. I could understand some of his hand movements. I realized that Daniel was different from anyone I'd ever met, me included. When he saw that people couldn't understand him, he came up with another way of communicating. His artistic ability was matchless (无敌的). Then he became my best friend and we both understood each other pretty well despite our differences. During the winter break, I tried to get Daniel to play some games with me and to my surprise he was better than I expected. I also learned a lot from him.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
I decided to learn sign language secretly and planned to give Daniel a surprise. Daniel was not close with me.

Text 10
Americans are careful about how and when they meet one another's eyes. In conversation, eye contact lasts only about a second before one or both persons look away. When two Americans look searchingly into each other's eyes, emotions are heightened and the relationship becomes more intimate. Therefore, they carefully avoid this, except in proper situations. Proper street behaviorin the United States requires a nice balance of attention and inattention. You are supposed to look at a passer-by just enough to show that you're aware of his presence. If you look too little, you appear too proud, and if you look too much, you are too curious. Usually what happens is that people watch each other until they are about eight feet apart, at which point both cast down their eyes. In England the polite listener stares at the speaker attentively and blinks his eyes occasionally as a sign of interest. That eye-blink says nothing to Americans, who expect the listener to nod or to murmur something—such as “mm-hum”.

Body language is used by people in their interactions with others. It is very useful because it can help you make yourself easily understood. Some gestures are widely accepted as they have the same meanings.
Body language also varies from culture to culture. For example, when talking, some people like standing close to each other, but English people must keep a distance away. In most countries, it is considered impolite to sit with your feet pointing at another person.
So when you are in a foreign country, knowing the meanings of gestures will make your stay there much more pleasant and comfortable.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
I decided to learn sign language secretly and planned to give Daniel a surprise. Daniel was not close with me.

I decided to learn sign language secretly and planned to give Daniel a surprise. From then on, I committed myself to learning sign language in secret. I practiced diligently every night, determined to surprise Daniel with my newfound ability. I dedicated so much effort to learning sign language that there were moments when Daniel mistook my focus on the subject for a wandering mind in class. But I had to avoid his questioning eyes in the fear of spoiling my long-brewed surprise. Just when I was happy about the progress I made, I came to spot something unusual.
Daniel was not close with me. He intentionally avoided me. He refused to “talk” to me at school and he hung up on me after class. One day, I approached the quiet boy and gestured “I'm sorry” in sign language. Seeing that, his eyes lit up with unexpected joy. “You are my best friend forever.” I continued to sign. He was stunned. I explained to him my learning plans. His eyes overflowed with tears and he gestured, “The fact that we are friends will never change!”

18.What does it mean when you look at a passer-by too little in the street
A.You are too curious. B.You appear too proud.
C.You are not attentive.
19.Why does a person in England blink his eyes while listening to others
A.To show he is bored.
B.To show he is interested.
C.To show he is tired.
20.What does an American expect the listener to do
A.Blink the eyes silently. B.Nod and keep silent.
C.Nod or murmur something.

第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分 50 分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
“When studying foreign languages, don't forget about body language,” Anne Merritt said.

A.Listening to customers.
B.Arguing with customers.
C.Studying customers' words.
D.Reading customers' body language.

篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。作者主要介绍了对猴子肢体语言的一项研究和结果,以及专家对这项研究的态度。
28.According to Dr Hobaiter, only monkeys and humans can ________.
A.memorize specific words
B.understand complex information
C.use voices to communicate
D.communicate messages on purpose
解析:细节理解题。根据第二段最后一句“Only humans and monkeys ... to another group member on purpose.”可知,Hobaiter博士认为只有猴子和人能有目的地交流信息。故选D。
29.What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.Calls. B.Gestures.
C.Messages. D.Voices.
解析:指代判断题。根据第三段第一句 “Although previous research has shown ... their voices intentionally to communicate messages.”
30.What did Dr Shultz think of the study
A.It was well designed but poorly carried out.
B.It was a good try but the findings were limited.
C.The evidence was reliable but the conclusion isn't new.
D.The result was disappointing and the methods were wrong.
解析:细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Dr Susanne Shultz, a biologist ... the results were ‘a little disappointing’.”可知,Dr Shultz认为该研究是一次好的尝试,但是研究的发现不尽如人意。故选B。
31.What is the main idea of the text

Put away the distractions
__37__ while someone's talking to you or you're supposed to be hanging out with them. Maybe we can't get rid of all our distractions or put away technology completely, but just taking the time to look up could vastly improve our communication with each other.
Have practice conversations
If you don't think you're great at communicating with co workers or people you don't know well, try practicing on friends and family that you're very comfortable with. __38__ and let you know if you're getting too quiet, personal or might make someone else feel uncomfortable.
__39__
Stories are powerful. They activate our brains, make presentations better, and make us more persuasive. Learn the secrets of becoming a great storyteller with these rules to structure your description. Everyone's got at least one great story in them.
Listen, really listen
__40__. It's hard work, we know, but an extremely good conversation is a bunch of words elegantly connected with listening. Then, even if your communication styles don't match, at least you're both working off the same page. And hopefully the other person will be attentively listening to you too.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
I decided to learn sign language secretly and planned to give Daniel a surprise. ﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍
