However, I didn’t want to give up, so I stepped on the hard journey of practice. I started to tell stories every day, sometimes in front of my classmates and sometimes in front of the mirror in my living room. Within a few months of intense practice, I spoke more naturally and fluently. More importantly, my self-confidence began to rise bit by bit. I became more comfortable talking with new people. I was a different girl from the shy one who was afraid of strangers and public speaking. I changed dramatically, which was really amazing!
Then, another chance came and I found myself on stage again. Unlike the first time, I went on stage with ease and relaxation. I told a well-prepared and brilliant story in a vivid way. A big round of applause proved that I had done a great job. A thrill of excitement and relief went through me. Never before had I experienced such a feeling of achievement. All these wonderful changes in my life came about when I listened to my heart and conquered my fears. “Where there is a will, there is a way” has once again witnessed its success.包头市第八十一中学 2024-2025学年度(上)高二期中考试

In 1998, Boulanger traveled to China for the first time. He says he never forgets the vast lands and
beautiful scenery. Ten years later, he traveled to Huangshan Mountain, a place that changed his life. He
lived in Tunxi District at the foot of the mountain for three months. Surrounded by mountains and

rivers, the district is famous for its Huizhou culture, which is a unique regional culture. “I didn't want to
leave here anymore. I love the culture too much,” Boulanger said. His trip to China thus turned into a
long-term stay.
In 2011, Boulanger became a tour guide. Unlike other guides, he rarely takes his guests—mostly
foreigners—to the most popular attractions. Instead, he searches for unknown scenery in the surrounding
area that he believes shows more real local culture. “I just open the map app and see if there are any
villages around. If there are, I will go there and see if it's worth traveling to.” Boulanger often hikes or
rides a motorcycle with his friends to find hidden scenery scattered around Huangshan Mountain. They
are surprised from time to time by streams, ancient villages, and inaccessible forests.
Boulanger enjoys time spent camping and hiking with his friends. They chat with locals and fall
asleep to the sounds of frogs and cicadas (蝉). Sometimes, he also travels with his Chinese tour guide
friends. "It's very interesting that even at the scenic spots that they have visited countless times, they
have never been to the places I take them to," Boulanger said proudly.
Boulanger often shares the beautiful moments on social media. He has since taken about 120,000
photos in China and especially likes one photo: a little girl holding a cartoon umbrella, squatting (蹲) in
the middle of an ancient street and building a snowman with a small shovel (铲) in the heavy snow.
"Wow! The girl was me when I was little!” a young Chinese netizen commented shortly after the photo
was posted. The magical connection between past and present, and between reality and the Internet,
amazed him.
24. When did Boulanger decide to stay in China
A. In 1998. B. In 1999. C. In 2000. D. In 2008.
25. Why does Boulanger seldom take his guests to the most popular attractions
A. They are too crowded.
B. They are too expensive.
C. It is too challenging to climb the mountain.
D. The unknown scenery reflects more local culture.
26. What is Boulanger very proud of
A. He has been a guide since 1998.
B.He has lived in the district for 30 years.
C. He has found places his tour guide friends haven't been to.
D. He can sleep to the sounds of frogs and cicadas.
27. Why was the Chinese girl so excited
A. Boulanger is her professor in college. B. Boulanger's photo shows her hometown.
C. She found herself in Boulanger's photo. D. She got a foreign gift from Boulanger.

On August 20th, 2024, the Chinese gaming industry reached a milestone with the global release of
Black Myth: Wukong, a new AAA action role-playing game developed by Game Science. Within hours
of launch, it topped Steam’s most-played single-player list, gaining significant attention on social media.
Black Myth: Wukong draws on Chinese mythologies(神话) and the classic novel Journey to the
West. It allows players to assume the role of Sun Wukong and start grand adventures. Inspired by
Stephen Chow’s A Chinese Odyssey, the game creates a vivid dreamscape with Chinese scenery, like
remote mountains, wild roads and ancient temples. The various demons, gods, and other figures with
Chinese-style designs in the game are based on The Classic of Mountains and Seas, breathing new life
into the ancient tales of Chinese mythology.
Feng Ji, Game Science founder and CEO, emphasized that the game was created entirely by a
Chinese team to bring Chinese stories to the global gaming stage. He said, “The script and artistic
concepts always take the lead, harmoniously integrating (把……融入) Chinese stories and classical
cultural elements into the game.” He believed that a game’s true value is not determined by its budget or
visuals, but by the genuine enjoyment it offers players.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, to create a truly immersive (沉浸式的), world-class game,
the game’s production team spent years traveling across China, scanning historical and cultural sites, and
integrating them into every game scene. The game features 36 locations thoroughly modeled after
real-world sites, with 27 of them located in Shanxi Province, China, offering players a unique and
immersive visual experience.
The game has increased interest in Shanxi’s cultural heritage. Bookings for trips to Shanxi have
doubled since July, and the number of tourists to Shanxi has grown by 50%. Shanxi has rich tourism
resources but lacks recognition both at home and abroad. The game has presented Shanxi’s cultural relics
in a pleasing and effective way, arousing people’s interest in the province’s culture and travel.
28. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the game
A. Its design inspiration. B. Its wide popularity.
C. Its target players. D. Its cultural significance.
29. What is the key to making a truly valuable game according to Feng Ji
A. Creating high profits for the game company.
B. Integrating Chinese stories into artistic concepts.
C. Designing impressive characters and visual effects.
D. Providing a satisfying experience for players.
30. Which of the following words can best describe the game’s production team
A. Ambitious but critical. B. Confident and productive.
C. Devoted and high-standard. D. Experienced but stubborn.
31. How does the game benefit Shanxi Province

Scientists say the drying Great Salt Lake in Utah is now becoming a significant contributor to
global greenhouse gas emissions (排放) that are causing the climate lo warm, according to a new
study.
The Great Salt Lake has reduced in area by almost half in recent years. “Human-caused desiccation
(干涸) of the Great Salt Lake is making huge areas of the lake bed come into sight and giving off
large quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere,” said Soren Brothers, the museum’s climate
change curator.
The researchers found that the drying lake bed gave off 4.1 million tons of CO2 and other
greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which would translate to a 7% increase in Utah’s human-caused
emissions. According to scientists, 4 million tons of CO2 is equal to the total annual emissions of 140
passenger planes.
Scientists say the state is as dry as it’s been in 1,200 years. The drought has been made worse by
climate change. Agriculture has also played a huge role in the lake’s present situation. Upstream water
diversions(改道)for farms and dairies have resulted in less lows into the lake. Utah’s rapid population
growth is also a reason.
The loss of water has serious impacts on the lives of animals and people. Researchers in Utah have
begun to discover sharp reductions in shorebird populations as a result of brine shrimp dying out. Dust
storms and air pollution, born out of a dried-up lake bed, are also a major concern for Utah residents.
That’s worrisome for the majority of Utah’s 3.3 million population who live near the lake.
The Great Salt Lake’s levels have rebounded (回升) slightly in recent years due to the last two
snowy winters. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox promised to prevent the lake from drying up on his watch. “For
generations, the lake was seen as kind of this dead thing that just happens to be there and will always be
there,” Cox told NPR in April. “And now that people are realizing there’s a possibility that it might not
always be here, that has reminded people and attracted their attention in a positive way.”
32. Why does the author mention passenger planes
A. To present the promising future of travelling by plane
B. To stress much CO2 has been given off by the drying lake.
C. To show they are a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions
D. To compare the amounts of CO2 given off by different human activities.
33. What’s the function of the fourth paragraph
A. To explain reasons. B. To provide evidence.
C. To appeal for immediate action. D. To list possible results.

A. The belief that the lake will always be there.
B. The promise that the lake will be under protection.
C. The fact that the lake has stopped reducing in area.
D. The realization that the lake is likely to disappear.
35. What would be the most suitable title for the text
A. What Makes the Great Salt Lake Dry Up
B. How Does the Great Salt Lake Recover Its Water

What is self-discipline (自律) It’s what keeps you from eating too many chips when you’re on a
diet or from buying things you don’t need. 36 , but it will take practice and will require you to be
patient and kind to yourself. Here are some ways you could start developing self-discipline:
Figure out your “why”
Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor and psychiatrist, once said, “Those who have a ‘why’ to live
can bear with almost any ‘how’.” When you find your “why”, or the reason why you want to do
something, you can remind yourself of these reasons when things get difficult. 37 .
Be aware
38 : what to eat, when to go to bed, or whether you should send that seemingly improper text.
We can avoid temptations(诱惑)or give in to them. For example, people often say that you should not
go grocery shopping on an empty stomach. Why Because you are more likely to buy junk foods, snacks
or other high-calorie foods.
39
If you don’t know where you’re going, it might be easier to get distracted (分心). If this sounds
like you, you can create a list of clear action steps that you intend to take on a daily or weekly basis until
you reach your goal. Whether you want to develop good habits or remove bad habits, creating a clear
road map will help you achieve success.
Start small
As an old saying goes: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one single step.” Now that
you have a plan, take a step. Remember it’s unrealistic to expect results overnight. 40 , as this can
lead you to feel extremely stressed and might even cause you to quit your plan.

It was ten years ago. I was a shy girl with few words. In every social situation, I avoid having
conversations with strangers.
However, I was fond of listening to and telling stories. As the storytellers on stage told interesting
stories, the audience laughed, wept and sang. Like everyone else, I was attracted by them and admired
them. I kept telling myself in my heart: “I love stories! These are my kind of people! I want to be a
storyteller!”
Storytelling means getting up on a stage under bright lights and addressing strangers. Storytelling
also requires using a microphone and tons of memorization. Let’s not forget self-confidence and the
ability to act! Where was I going to get the talent, memory, and courage needed to become a storyteller
Second only to death, public speaking was my greatest fear. “I must be crazy!” I thought to myself.
“My memory isn’t that great. What if I get up there and forget my story ”
However, I didn’t want to fail, and the opportunity to give the gift of laughter or touch people’s
hearts with heartwarming stories meant more to me than the pain of self-discipline it would require to
become a storyteller. All I had to do was gather all my courage and march forward through my wall of
fears.
So, one day when I heard about an upcoming storytelling event in my town, I decided to take part in
it. It was the first time for me to stand on stage. It felt as if I were being led to the guillotine (断头台).
One hundred pairs of eyes were fixed on me as I stood on stage, performing a humorous story. My hands
were icy cold, and my mind went completely empty. It didn’t turn out well, and I tasted the bitter (苦涩
的) feeling of failure.
