Huang Xuhua, the “father of China’s nuclear submarines (潜艇)”, passed away at the age of 99 due to illness.
Born in Guangdong Province in 1926, Huang’s life was like a submarine in the deep sea—silent, but with endless power. In 1958, due to his outstanding political qualities and excellent professional skills, he was secretly called to Beijing. From then, he worked in secrecy for 30years, devoting himself to China’s nuclear submarine program. Together with the first-generation nuclear submarine research team, he focused on research, overcoming difficulties, and pushing forward consistently.
Huang’s life was one of outstanding achievements and greatness. From 2017 to 2020, he was awarded national-level honors three times by President Xi Jinping. In 2019, he was awarded the Medal of the Republic and in 2020, he received the highest science and technology award of the nation for 2019. Huang also cared deeply about the long-term development of national science and technology, nuclear submarine work, and the healthy growth of future generations. He donated over 20 million yuan to this field.
The development of China’s nuclear submarine technology was a hard journey full of challenges. Huang and his colleagues, through strong determination and tireless efforts, succeeded in building the nation’s first nuclear submarine. Without the development of the submarines, China’s position as a major global power and a strong nation would not have been firmly built in the way it is today, Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert, told the Global Times.
What Huang and the pioneering generation of scientists have left to us is a determined spirit. It is this spirit that will drive us to achieve technological breakthroughs and overcome difficulties in the face of frightening challenges, said Song.
24. Why was Huang’s life like a submarine in the deep sea silently
A. Because his job required secrecy. B. Because submarines were silent.
C. Because he was a deaf man. D. Because no one knew his life.
25. According to paragraph 3, which of the following best describes Huang

D. Huang’s contributions to the development of China’s nuclear submarine.

In the past few years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a hot topic. It is changing the way we live and work. But what exactly is artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence is the ability of a computer or a robot programmed to do tasks that are usually done by humans. These tasks include problem-solving, language-understanding, decision-making, and so on. For example, AI can help computers understand human language. When you talk to a smart speaker, it can understand what you are saying and give you the information you need. AI can also help computers learn from experience. Just as humans learn from mistakes, AI can improve itself over time.
AI is used in many different areas. In the medical field, AI can help doctors diagnose diseases. It can analyze medical images and find problems that might be hard for humans to see. In education, AI can create personalized learning plans for students. It can understand what students have known and what they need to learn next. In the transportation industry, AI is used in self-driving cars. These cars can sense their surroundings and make decision s to drive safely.
However, there are also some concerns about AI. Some people worry that AI will take over too many jobs and leave people jobless. Others worry about the safety of AI. If an AI system makes a mistake, it can have serious consequences.
Despite these concerns, the benefits of AI outweigh the risks. AI, which can help us solve problems and make our life easier, will continue to play a big role in our future.
28. What is artificial intelligence according to the text
A. A kind of robot replacing all human jobs.
B. The ability of humans to learn from computers.
C. The ability of computers to do tasks like humans.
D. A type of computer game popular among teenagers.
29. Which application of AI is NOT mentioned in the text
A. Mental support.
B. Medical diagnosis.
C. Self-driving vehicles.
D. Personalized education.
30. What can we infer about AI in education from paragraph 3
A. It makes teachers unnecessary.
B. It controls students’ study schedules.
C. It plans learning based on students’ needs.
D. It only brings help to excellent students.
31. The author’s attitude towards the future of AI can be described as ______.
A. doubtful B. positive
C. indifferent D. worried
D
Every year, China produces 180 million tons of agricultural waste, such as corn husks and rice straw. For decades, farmers burned these leftovers, filling the air with harmful pollution. But what if nature already had a solution A team of scientists in Guizhou discovered an unexpected answer—oyster mushrooms (平菇).
While studying forest ecosystems, researchers noticed something amazing: oyster mushrooms could quickly break down wood chips. Dr. Liang Mei, the project leader, explained, “The secret lies in their root-like networks, called mycelium (菌丝), which naturally break down organic matter.” This observation inspired the researchers to wonder whether mushrooms could help manage agricultural waste.
To test their theory, the team began their research. First, Crop waste was combined with mushroom spores (孢子) in special containers. Then, the mixture was kept in dark, damp boxes for 9-12 days, allowing the mycelium to grow. Finally, the material was heated and pressed into firm shapes.
The results were impressive. The mycelium acted as “nature’s glue”, creating a lightweight yet strong material that could handle 15kg / cm2 of pressure—similar to some types of wood.
Working with packaging companies, the team designed eco-friendly packaging material for shipping goods. This new-type material has a great advantage: it takes just 30 days to break down. Of course, the technology still faces hurdles. It takes longer time than plastic to produce (12 days vs. 2 hours), and the material weakens in very damp conditions. However, recent improvements have sped up mushroom growth by 40%.
The project isn’t just helping the planet—it’s also benefiting farmers. Wang Dashan, a Guizhou farmer, now sells his crop waste instead of burning it. “Last year, I made an extra 3,000yuan from corn stalks,” he shared. Meanwhile, major delivery companies plan to turn to mushroom packaging by 2027, potentially cutting plastic waste by 120,000 tons per year.
32. What inspired the scientists to use oyster mushrooms for managing agricultural waste
A. Government policies limiting plastic production.
B. Farmers’ complaints about burning crop leftovers.
C. The high market demand for eco-friendly packaging.
D. The mushrooms’ ability to break down wood pieces quickly.
33. How is the mushroom-based material produced
A. By burning straw and husks.
B. By chemically turning mycelium into glue.
C. By exposing crop waste to sunlight for weeks.
D. By mixing and heating agricultural waste with spores.
34. What does the underlined word “hurdles” in paragraph 5 most probably mean
A. Functions. B. Benefits.
C. Challenges. D. Secrets.
35. What is the main problem discussed in the text
A. Reuse of crop waste. B. Pollution of plastics.
C. Income of farmers. D. Shortage of energy.

Jane started high school full of excitement. Eager to help her new class, teachers and classmates, she decided to run for (竞选) monitor. She was very happy when their head teacher, Mr. Johnson, announced she won. She dreamed of leading her class to be the best in the whole school.
However, problems came one by one. During self-study time, some classmates talked loudly; some even played music. Jane would stand up and tell everyone angrily, “Be quiet! It’s study time!” But her loud orders didn’t work. Tom, who was supposed to clean the blackboard, often “forgot”. Jane shouted to remind him of his duty, which only made Tom quite embarrassed and unhappy. Jane also announced her plans for group study after school, expecting everyone to join in it. But obviously most students weren’t interested and complained about the extra “work”.
Jane felt more and more disappointed and helpless. Her direct orders seemed to push people away instead of bringing them together. Her dream of a top united class seemed to be broken by the daily problems.
Standing alone after another rule failed, she felt deeply disappointed. Her methods weren’t working at all. Maybe she wasn’t suitable for being monitor. She couldn’t stand it like this anymore.
Mr. Johnson noticed Jane was in low spirits.

W: Hello, everyone. Today, I’ll talk about how to improve your pronunciation. Language researchers say pronunciation and fluency are the biggest barriers, followed by grammar in effective spoken English. However, most people don’t regard pronunciation as a very important part of communication skills. They’re more focused on vocabulary. One reason is that most people are not even aware of their mispronunciations. So, it’s important to first find out the words you mispronounce. You should listen to experts. By experts, I mean those who are less likely to make pronunciation mistakes. When listening to them, pay attention to words that sound strange. Strange because you pronounce the same words differently. When you come across such words, check a dictionary to confirm their exact pronunciations. You can also search for difficult-to-pronounce words and names and make a list of them. The last suggestion is to read aloud. Now you’ve got the correct pronunciations of the words. It’s time to practice reading them every day.

The mycelium acted as “nature’s glue”, creating a lightweight yet strong material that could handle 15kg/cm2 of pressure—similar to some types of wood.
Working with packaging companies, the team designed eco-friendly packaging material for shipping goods. This new-type material has a great advantage: it takes just 30 days to break down. Of course, the technology still faces hurdles. It takes longer time than plastic to produce(12 days vs.2 hours), and the material weakens in very damp conditions.
D 33. D 34. C 35. A
根据第三段“To test their theory, the team began their research. First, Crop waste was combined with mushroom spores (孢子)in special containers. Then, the mixture was kept in dark, damp boxes for 9 - 12 days, allowing the mycelium to grow. Finally, the material was heated and pressed into firm shapes.”
根据第五段中“Of course, the technology still faces hurdles. It takes longer time than plastic to produce (12 days vs.2 hours), and the material weakens in very damp conditions. However, recent improvements have sped up mushroom growth by 40%.”
第一段中“Every year, China produces 180 million tons of agricultural waste, such as corn husks and rice straw. For decades, farmers burned these leftovers, filling the air with harmful pollution. “Last year, I made an extra 3,000yuan from corn stalks,” he shared. Meanwhile, major delivery companies plan to turn to mushroom packaging by 2027, potentially cutting plastic waste by 120,000 tons per year. (贵州农民王大山现在出售作物废弃物而不是焚烧它们。“去年,我从玉米秸秆中额外赚了3000元,”他分享道。与此同时,主要快递公司计划到2027年改用蘑菇包装,每年可能减少12万吨塑料垃圾)”整体围绕农业废弃物的再利用展开,故核心问题是农业废弃物的重新利用。故选A。

She couldn’t stand it like this any more.
Mr. Johnson noticed Jane was in low spirits.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With a clear mind, Jane returned to her duties in a new way.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mr. Johnson noticed Jane was in low spirits. He gently asked her to stay after class. Sensing her disappointment, he shared his own early struggles as a teacher. “True leadership,” he said softly, “isn’t about shouting orders. It’s about respect and teamwork. Try listening more and talking with your classmates.” Jane felt a little hope as Mr. Johnson encouraged her to find wiser ways to win their trust. His words were like a ray of light, brightening her confusion. She realized she needed to change her methods to bring everyone together.
With a clear mind, Jane returned to her duties in a new way. Instead of shouting out commands, she arranged time to chat gently with her classmates and listen to their ideas and suggestions. She also grouped the whole class for cleaning duties to ensure fairness. To encourage a quiet environment for self-study, she herself kept learning quietly, setting a good example. Feeling their voices heard and understood, more students joined the study groups willingly. Gradually, the noisy classroom became quieter. Hopefully, Jane came to realize it was respect and cooperation that could build up the strong team in her dream.
