The Jones-Baldwin family wasn't always so big. When Keia Jones married her husband Richardo Baldwin in 2010,she had just one child: a 2-year-old daughter,Zariyah from a previous relationship.Little did they know, though, that their family would eventually add not one,not two,but three more children to the Jones-Baldwin family, thanks to the gift of adoption.
First came 11-year-old Karleigh,in 2014.She and Zariyah became close friends at school, but due to some financial difficulties,Keia says Karleigh's mother fell on hard times and was unable to properly care for her.In 2017,the couple adopted a lovely 3-year-old named Ayden. That same year, their fourth child came into their lives unexpectedly.
“Unlike our three other black kids, the baby, named Princeton,is white,” Keia recalls.Princeton was born seriously ill and stayed in hospital several weeks after his birth.“They needed someone to do skin-to-skin with him,” says Keia,“and chose me for the task, and I was more than willing to take on the job.”
The experience of being black parents raising a white son has certainly caused them some trouble. There are always lots of suspicious stares and unfavorable comments wherever they go.Someone even called the police and said the baby was stolen by the couple.Once the family were enjoying themselves on the beach in Florida when the police were called in.It was not until Keia showed the police their ID cards that they were convinced that the baby was indeed their adopted son.
When asked why they would make so much effort to adopt the kids,Keia smiled.“It's all love,” she said.“Both my husband and I love kids.We just can't stand seeing kids suffering.Thank goodness, the lovely kids, who are from different cultures and of different ages, are all growing up healthily and happily under the same roof.Over the years, they have brought us so much joy! The public nowadays has a misunderstanding of forest fires, believing that fires should be kept out of every type of forest. Many of us can recall Smoky the Bear's famous warning: “Remember, only YOU can prevent forest fires.”However, that's not always the case.Under the right conditions, and when conducted safely, fire can create many environmental benefits as well as help prevent larger, uncontrollable wildfires.
After a forest fire, many wildlife species will move into recently burned areas to feed on these newly available foods. Some reptiles and amphibians such as the pine snake prefer forests frequently burned by fire.As Herbert Stoddard put it,“One of the most harmful things modern man has done to birds has been his attempt to exclude fire from fire-type pine forests.Within a few years most forests choke up with bushes, lose their prairie-like vegetation (草原般植被) and can no longer support birds dependent on periodic burning for their food supply and proper cover.”
If you are asked to picture the forest floor, what do you see Pine needles, cones, leaves, branches might come to mind—all sources of fuel.If these fuel sources build up without any type of removal, the ‘fuel load’ can lead to fires catastrophic to forests and people alike. In contrast, prescribed fire can be used by forest professionals every couple of years to keep forest fuels at an appropriate and manageable level. They can also minimize the spread of pest insects and disease and remove unwanted tree and plant species.Plus, they can create and maintain important wildlife habitats rich in grasses and promote the growth of trees, wildflowers and other various plants.
Many organizations and agencies work to promote fire on the landscape when and where appropriate.Smoky Bear even has an updated warning: “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires,” as the Forest Service has over the last few decades developed policies and procedures to include prescribed fire as a management tool,as well as continuing their work to prevent and fight wildfires.
8.Why did the author mention Smoky the Bear's warning
A.To introduce the topic of the passage.
B.To clarify a misunderstood concept.
C.To show the significance of fire prevention.
D.To raise people's awareness of forest protection.

10.What is the purpose of prescribed fire
A.To put out wildfires.

C.To remove tree and plant species.
D.To keep the fuel rich in the forest.
11.What might be the best title for the passage

High school students perform better on tests if they are in a classroom with a view of a green space, instead of a windowless room or a room with a view of built-up space, according to a research from the University of Illinois Department of Landscape Architecture.
“It is the first to show a relationship between studying with a green view and students' performance,”said William Sullivan, the head of the research team. It's a significant finding that if you have a green view outside your window, you'll do better on tests. Sullivan hopes the results of their research will lead to policy changes.Changes in school design, for example, “it would be a much better thing than any of the things we spend money on in secondary education today,”Sullivan said.
The research included 94 students at five central Illinois high schools. Students were randomly assigned to one of three kinds of classrooms—windowless, with a window looking out onto built-up space,or with a window looking out onto green space. Each kind of classroom had a similar size and layout. The students took part in one-on-one experiments in which they did 30 minutes of activities that included a proofreading exercise,a speech and a math exercise.Following the activities, the students were given an attention test which asked them to repeat a series of numbers.
The findings: Students did better on both study activities and the attention test if they were in a classroom with a green view,Sullivan said.
The researchers suggest their findings can help planners and policymakers improve students' well-being and learning. For example, planners can choose sites for new schools that already have trees and other vegetation,or they can plant many trees on the site; architects can design classroom, dining room and hallway windows so they look onto green spaces.
12.What did the study find out about high school students
A.They like to have green plants in their classrooms.
B.They will get better grades when studying in different classrooms.
C.Changes in school design will influence their attitudes towards teachers.
D.A green view through a classroom window can improve their performance.
13.What does the underlined word“significant” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Traditional. B.Important.
C.Necessary. D.Early.
14.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.How the study was carried out.
B.Why the study was different.
C.The purpose of the study.
D.The result of the study.
15.What do the researchers think of the study
A.It has drawn public attention to education.
B.It can play a guiding role in school planning.
C.It has encouraged students to get close to nature.
D.It needs more support from high school teachers.

My name is Tom.Before I was born, the doctors examined my mom and found there was something wrong with my face, and actually it was worse. With my “weird” face,I struggled in school, realizing kids were scared to touch me,often avoiding me.Fortunately,I had my friend Jack and teacher Mr. Green supporting me always. However, one thing happened to me which almost destroyed me.
For me,Halloween was the best holiday in the world.I got to dress up in a costume.I got to wear a mask.I got to go around like every other kid with a mask and nobody thought I looked weird. On the morning of Halloween this year,I rushed to my room and started to put on the Spiderman costume I had mentioned to Jack, but all of a sudden,I didn't feel like wearing it.So,at the last minute,I changed into the Ironman costume from last year. Then,my dad sent me to school.
Walking through the halls that morning on my way to the lockers was,I have to say, absolutely awesome.Everything was different now.I was different.Where I usually walked with my head down, trying to avoid being seen, today I walked with my head up,looking around.I was starting to think this was going to go down as one of the most awesome days in the history of my life, but then I got to the classroom.Several classmates were talking and I knew who they were for their voices, even in costumes, those who were popular guys but mean to me at school. Then I noticed another voice,so familiar, from my best friend,Jack. He said,“I've thought about this a lot and I really think...if I looked like Tom,seriously,I think that I'd kill myself.”
After hearing his words,I walked out of the classroom without anyone knowing I had been there. My face felt like it was on fire while I walked down the stairs to a quiet place with no one there.I was sweating under my costume. And I started crying.

Just when I felt utterly defeated,I felt a gentle touch on my shoulder.I turned to see Mr. Green standing there.I took off my mask and just cried for I didn't know how long. All the pretense of toughness crumbled.Only after I stopped crying did Mr. Green, his voice filled with concern, ask,“What's going on,Tom?” I opened up to him about Jack's perception of me and the pain those words inflicted.Mr. Green responded with reassurance, speaking in a gentle tone,“Tom,sometimes people say hurtful things they don't really mean.I'll have a chat with Jack and sort things out.”
Shortly after Mr.Green talked to Jack,I noticed Jack rushing to me with guilt in his eyes.“Tom,I was mean and stupid.I should never have said that stuff in front of the Ironman.I didn't mean the stuff I said,”he admitted regretfully. He went on to explain that he had momentarily wanted to fit in with those popular kids, even though he hadn't truly meant to become like them.In that moment, the internal struggle Jack faced and reasons behind him uttering those hurtful words became clear to me.I accepted his sincere apologies and we hugged each other, with a warm current flowing between us.Halloween, the holiday I cherished so much, took on a new meaning for me that year, symbolizing the strength of friendship and the power of healing.
