My husband and I have travelled to more than 40 countries, but we will never forget the first destination — Thailand.
Our trip to Bangkok from Europe was extremely long. It took us more than 30 hours to get there. We were very tired and all we were dreaming about was taking a shower and going to sleep.
When we finally picked up our luggage and went through the customs, we caught the taxi. As usual, we showed the hotel address to the driver, he nodded his head and started driving. When we got to the city center, he seemed lost. He didn’t say a word though. After half an hour, he finally told us that he had no idea where our hotel was. He asked us to leave the car and find our hotel by ourselves because it’s “somewhere close”. It was dark, late, and there was nobody on the street.
We were terrified. It was our first trip overseas ever. It was supposed to be great and it wasn’t really a good start. We were travelling back in 2014 when the Internet still wasn’t available everywhere. We didn’t have a Thai SIM card, so forget about Google Maps.
We’ve been all by ourselves. We had no idea what to do or where to go. Our backpacks were heavy and we were exhausted. And then ... we saw HIM. Our travel angel (天使).
He was a tall, strong, warm-hearted white guy, wearing a white T-shirt and pretty loose jeans. He asked us whether we needed help. Both of us screamed: “YES!” before he even finished his question. He took the address, called somewhere, and after 10 minutes, he walked us straight to our hotel. It turned out it was just around the corner.
We don’t even know this guy’s name but we will always be grateful for his help. It’s one of the Thailand stories that makes us keep coming back to this country and travel the world. We know we will meet helpful people everywhere and it’s safe to travel.

Middle school is a hard time for teenagers. They’re not little kids anymore, but they’re not fully-grown. The social environment for middle schoolers can be full of ever-changing friendships, confusing messages and making clear which friends are good friends.
Life skills every middle school student needs to learn include understanding, self-respect, time management, teamwork, creative thinking, problem solving, and communication skills. These skills lay the foundation (基础) for success in high school, college, and the working world.
Middle school students should learn that not only is it OK to ask questions in class, but it’s also expected. Middle school students should know how to learn through questioning and should know that it is OK to ask teachers to explain materials they don’t understand.
They should also understand that disagreement is part of life and should begin to understand that school isn’t for teaching you what to think, but rather how to think — how to analyze and solve problems, how to separate facts from opinions, and how to seek out different viewpoints. Middle schoolers who don’t know any way out of a disagreement other than a fight are going to have a hard time in life. Peaceful and respectful ways of solving problems are an essential life skill that should be learned in middle school. Whether it’s fighting over cutting in the lunch line, or what clothes who is wearing, middle schoolers must learn how to hear each other out and to make compromises (折中).
Middle schoolers can learn to discuss respectfully, avoid interruption, and listen patiently and actively to understand what another speaker has said. Good communication is clear, short, and to the point, but with guidance, they can learn how to organize their thoughts and present their ideas properly.
Middle school may be a student’ s first time to manage their own class schedule and homework. They need tools to help them stay organized and to manage their time effectively. Middle school requires a more structured way to balance schoolwork with after-class activities and still have time for hanging out with friends.

A.Replying too directly.
B.Communicating aimlessly.

A.Gains and Losses of Middle School
B.Life Skills for Middle School Students

A good many facts show that it is more difficult to learn a new language as an adult than as a child, which has led scientists to think that there is a “critical (关键的) period” for language learning. However, the length of this period and its underlying (根本的) causes remain unknown.
A new study performed at MIT suggests that children remain very skilled at learning the grammar of a new language much longer than expected — up to the age of 17 or 18. However, the study also found that it is nearly impossible for people to achieve fluency similar to that of a native speaker unless they start learning a language by the age of 10.
“If you want to have native-like knowledge of English grammar you should start by about 10 years old. We don’t see very much difference between people who start at birth and people who start at 10, but we start seeing a going down after that,” says Joshua Hartshorne, an assistant professor of psychology at Boston College, who conducted this study as a postdoc at MIT.
People who start learning a language between 10 and 18 will still learn quickly, but since they have a shorter window before their learning ability goes down, they do not achieve the fluency of native speakers, the researchers found. The findings are based on an analysis of a grammar quiz taken by nearly 670,000 people, which is by far the largest data set that anyone has collected for a study of language-learning ability.
“It’s been very difficult until now to get all the data you would need to answer this question of how long the critical period lasts,” says Josh Tenenbaum, an MIT professor of brain science and an author of the paper. “This is one of those rare opportunities in science where we could work on a question that is very old, that many smart people have thought about and written about, and take a new angle to see something that maybe other people haven’t.”

When my kids were young, finding ways to connect with them was easy. If you’re looking for easy and fun ways to connect with your teens, you have to be willing to step into their world.
Watch What They Watch on TV
The next time your teens are watching television, sit down and watch whatever they’re watching with them. 36 Watch the documentary (纪录片) that interests them. It’s a great way to spend time with your kids doing something they love.
Listen to the Music They Love
Not long ago, my son and I were on a flight, and my son offered to “share” one of his earbuds with me. It sounded like a really good idea at the time until I realized my son is into rap music. 37 I showed an interest in his interest and I made him feel special by proving to him that his mum cared about what he cared about.
Get to Know Their Friends
By the time our kids hit the teen years, so often, our kids’ friends become their world. To them, their friends aren’t simply friends… They’re family. Whether you love your teens’ friends or perhaps you’re not totally fond of your teens’ choice, get to know them. 38
Find Out What They Love and Love It, Too
If your son is crazy about a particular video game, find out what he loves about it and play it with him sometimes. If your daughter’s favourite pastime is drifting (漂流), go drifting with her. 39 It’s just that they want to spend time with us doing things that interest them. Bottom line, find out what your teens love and love it, too.
Connect on Social Media
40 Watch silly TikTok videos together, and send them funny quotes via text. Connect with your teens on their terms, in their world. And, since social media is a huge part of their world, it’s a great place to stay connected and close.

Stage fright is the nervousness one feels when speaking in front of many people. Mr. Todd tries to get rid of stage fright in his speech class. His speech class has three speeches in front of the class. The first speech is about the students themselves. Since it is the first speech, a lot of students are nervous. Mr. Todd told them to think of the listeners as their friends.
The second speech is to persuade the listeners to support a special cause. One student talked about smoking. Another student talked about the former president. For this speech, Mr. Todd advised them to make connections with the listeners. People are more likely to support your cause if you make it relatable to them.
For the third speech, the student is asked to try to talk the listeners into visiting a certain country. By the third speech, the students were much more confident. It was easier for them to talk in front of their classmates.
The students felt like they were all friends with each other. Even if they made mistakes, it was okay.

29.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“They should also understand that disagreement is part of life and should begin to understand that school isn’t for teaching you what to think, but rather how to think — how to analyze and solve problems, how to separate facts from opinions, and how to seek out different viewpoints. (他们还应该明白,分歧是生活的一部分,而且应该开始理解,学校并非是教你思考什么,而是教你如何思考 —— 如何分析和解决问题,如何区分事实与观点,以及如何探寻不同的视角。)”以及“Whether it’s fighting over cutting in the lunch line, or what clothes who is wearing, middle schoolers must learn how to hear each other out and to make compromises (折中).(无论是为午餐排队时插队的事情争吵,还是为某人穿了什么衣服而争执,中学生都必须学会倾听彼此的想法并做出折中。)”可知,第四段谈论的是处理分歧的技能。故选C项。

66.Dear John,
Knowing that you are at a loss because you have difficulty in learning maths recently, I will give you some suggestions concerning learning it, hoping they can be beneficial to you.
First and foremost, you are supposed to adapt to your maths teacher as soon as possible and listen to him or her attentively, which is the basic step of learning maths well. Second, as the saying goes, practice makes perfect, and learning maths is no exception. Therefore, you should make full use of every minute to do as many maths exercises as possible. Besides, you had better reflect on what you have practised regularly and make a summary every week. Last but not least, your state of mind matters most. As long as you can keep your feet on the ground and start from the basics, you will surely make great progress in learning math.
I hope you will find these suggestions helpful and that you will make rapid progress in your maths.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.One possible version:
My father didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.” At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth. She and my dad became friends, and with my dad’s encouragement, she began receiving rehabilitation training. Soon after, the little girl was sent to another hospital where she could get better treatment. My dad also left the children’s hospital because he became ill again. Some time later my father recovered and returned to work, and in came the little girl who had been paralyzed.
Only this time, the little girl was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read: “Thank you for helping me paint and encouraging me to walk.” My dad would cry every time he told us this story and so would we. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than the doctor, and my dad — who retired just a few months after the little girl gave the picture — continued to visit the children in that hospital.
