Ways to Improve Vocabulary
in Just One Day
The average American has a vocabulary in the thousands. Try these tricks to make sure yours builds up.
Watch movies
“If you see the movie version of your favourite book you're likely to have a deeper understanding and knowledge of the words in it,” says Neuman, professor of Childhood and Literacy Education at New York University. “Seeing and reading something on the same topic is really important.”
Read magazines
If you want to improve vocabulary, don't just flip through your favourite magazine, really read it.
Listen to how words sound
Many people won't remember tricky words unless they come across them frequently. But if you hear a word that you think sounds interesting, you become word conscious (有意识的) and start using it yourself, says Neuman.
Join a book club
“Book clubs are a wonderful strategy to learn new words,” says Neuman. Not only will it force you to set aside time in your day to read, but it's also a good way to discover books you might not normally be drawn to.
Listen to the radio
Those types of programs can expose you to topics you may not be familiar with. Don't miss these middle school vocabulary words adults still don't know.
Pay attention to your surroundings
Next time walk down a busy street or take a walk in the park, try to describe what you're seeing as much as possible inside your head.
Read, read, read
Even if you don't stop to look up every single foreign word, chances are you can improve vocabulary simply by figuring out (想出) their meaning based on the context.

With a thirst for a new challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn't start earlier. Since starting to learn, I have made good progress. The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is a test of Chinese language for non-native speakers. In July 2020, I passed my HSK3 exam with a score of 100 percent. I am now almost ready to start HSK5.
Learning to speak Chinese isn't as insurmountable as I once thought. When I speak to native speakers in Chinese, they almost always understand me. I also find it not too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters. I find studying the language relaxing and worthwhile, particularly writing the characters. The thing I find most challenging is listening since native speakers talk at such a speed. I can't always understand what's been said, but my weekly online language exchanges help with this greatly.
Despite my progress, it has still been the challenge I desire and has taken a lot of hard work. Furthermore, there is a long way to go before I reach my goal of fluency. The key to progress is to be patient and persistent (坚持不懈的). The satisfaction that comes from simple things like ordering food in Chinese, buying things on the Internet or communicating with a taxi driver makes all the hard work worth it.
My biggest takeaway from learning Chinese is that it's not only doable but can also be enjoyable. Learning Chinese not only helped me in day-to-day life, but deepened my cultural understanding of such a colorful and beautiful country. Considering where I am now, compared to two years ago, as long as I keep studying hard, I can image a time when I'll be able to read famous Chinese novels not in English but in the original text. So, to all my non-Chinese friends, I always say “Don't give up. Embrace (拥抱) the challenge.”
24.What is the author's regret?( )
A.He had a new challenge.
B.He decided to begin his language journey.
C.He didn't start learning Chinese earlier.
D.He passed his HSK3 exam.
25.What does the underlined word “insurmountable” mean in Paragraph 2?( )
A.Easy to upset.
B.Possible to change.
C.Comfortable to study.
D.Hard to overcome.
26.Why does the author think learning Chinese is satisfying?( )
A.It can make the author proud.
B.It makes the author know more Chinese.
C.It can be useful in daily life.
D.It makes the author more competitive.
27.Which can be a suitable title for the text?( )
A.Passing exams isn't a piece of cake
B.Learning Chinese isn't unbeatable
C.Explore the historical and cultural country
D.Deepen understanding of Chinese culture

There are thousands of languages in the world. But which language is the oldest Experts use different methods to find out the age of a language.
Finding the oldest language is a challenging task, according to Danny Hieber, an expert in the study of endangered languages. “If we think that most languages can date back to an original human language, all languages are equally old,” Hieber said. However, it's impossible to find out such language—the direct ancestor of every language in the world. Accordingly, some experts believe that the “oldest language” should belong to one with a well-established written record.
Many of the earliest recorded examples of writing come from languages that used cuneiform script (楔形文字). Among these languages are Sumerian and Akkadian, both dating back at least 4,600 years. Experts have also found Egyptian hieroglyphs that date to around the same historical period. These hieroglyphs, which can be translated into “He has united the Two Lands for his son, Dual King Peribsen,” are considered the earliest complete sentence ever discovered.
Experts generally agree that Sumerian, Akkadian and Egyptian are the oldest languages with a clear written record. All three are extinct,__meaning that they are no longer used and don't have any living followers which can carry the language to the next generation.
As for the oldest language that is still spoken, several competitors appear. Hebrew and Arabic stand out among such languages for having timelines that experts can reasonably find, according to Hieber. Although these earliest written languages only date back around 3,000 years, Hieber said, “both of them belong to the Afroasiatic language family, whose roots date back to 18,000 to 8,000 B.C.E., or about 20,000 to 10,000 years ago.” Even with this wide period of time, it is widely accepted that Afroasiatic is the oldest language family. But the exact point in time when Hebrew and Arabic separated from other Afroasiatic languages is heavily debated among experts.
28.How do experts determine the age of a language?( )
A.By studying its spoken dialects.
B.By analyzing its basic grammar.
C.By examining its written records.
D.By comparing it to other languages.
29.What is the value of the Egyptian hieroglyphs?( )
A.They're an example of cuneiform script.
B.They belong to the Afroasiatic language.
C.They provide evidence of the oldest language.
D.They're the earliest-known complete sentences.
30.What does the underlined word “extinct” in Paragraph 4 mean?( )
A.Gone. B.Ancient.
C.Outdated. D.Active.
31.What is the main disagreement among experts regarding Hebrew and Arabic?( )
A.The reason for their standing out.
B.The exact time of their separation.
C.The appearance of their competitors.
D.The roots of earliest written languages.
D
Language learning apps are very popular now and offer opportunities to learn vocabulary and practice grammar. But there has been a discussion about just how effective such apps can be.
Among the most popular apps are Duolingo and Busuu. A former research found positive results on the use of them. But it mainly concentrated on studies with learners who had signed up for language courses and these apps worked as an after class support, so the results were not always reliable. A recent study of 4,095 Busuu users has been carried out to find out if users can actually learn a language with an app.
Busuu provides learning materials for 12 different languages. It offers special models where some contents are ready for use for free while some contents are not. We find that its users are an even mix of men and women. More than half consider themselves to be at the beginner level because there is a reduction in users as their language levels go up. Most people use the app because of personal interest, or because they want to study or live abroad. Female users are likely to use it less often but for longer periods of time than male users.
Feedback in the app is highly thought of. More than 92% of the users say that the app has met their expectations and 86%consider the app as very good or good. In fact, more than 80% of the users surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language they are learning.
Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users, and this can address the performance nervousness that many learners suffer from when asked to speak a foreign language. So language teachers should encourage their students to use them to do the grammar work, leaving precious class time for more language communication.
32.What's the reason why the results of the former research weren't always reliable?( )
A.It only considered users of a limited kind.
B.It just focused on positive results.
C.It was only carried out before class.
D.It used out of date methods.
33.What can we learn about the app Busuu from the text?( )
A.It's used by more advanced learners.
B.All the contents are free to use.
C.Most users consider it satisfying.
D.It's more popular with female learners.
34.The underlined word “address” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “________”.( )
A.organise B.solve
C.increase D.practice
35.What is the main idea of the text?( )
A.Language learning apps are very popular with most language teachers.
B.Students won't suffer nervousness in learning languages by using Busuu.
C.Language learning apps are effective and satisfactory to language learners.
D.Students should be required to use apps for homework after class.

When she was 22 years old, Pat Jones decided to travel around the world and see as many foreign places as she could while she was young. She finished college at home in Britain, Pat chose to visit Latin America first, so she managed to get a job as an English teacher in a secondary school in Bolivia. Pat spoke a little Spanish, so she was able to communicate with her students even though they did not know much English.
A sentence she had once read somewhere stuck in her mind: if you dream in a foreign language, it means that you have really mastered it. Pat repeated this sentence to her students and she hoped that someday she would dream in Spanish and they would dream in English.
One day, Tim, one of the worst students in her class, came up to her and explained in Spanish that he had not done his homework. He said that he had gone to bed early and had slept badly. Pat was quite angry with him, for she did not think that his explanation had anything to do with his homework. But Tim told her that he dreamed all night and his dream was in English.
“In English!” Pat thought. She was greatly surprised, since Tim was such a bad student. She was also secretly jealous. Her dreams were still not in Spanish, but she decided to encourage her student and asked him to tell her about his dream.
“All the people in my dream spoke English,” Tim said. “And all the signs were in English. All the newspapers and magazines and all the TV programs were in English.”
“But that's wonderful,” said Pat. “What did all the people say to you?” she asked.
“I'm sorry, Miss Jones. That's why I slept so badly all through the night. I didn't understand a word they said. It was a nightmare!” Tim answered.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

Text 10
Hello, everyone. I'm glad to be here to share my opinion about English studying. I'm in my first year in university. Many of you said that listening in English is difficult. Well, it is true for me as well. I remember when I was learning English, I could understand when my teacher was talking to me, but actually I couldn't understand some of the news reporters when I listened to the news. But now my listening has improved a lot. Here are some ideas that may help you improve your listening in English. First of all, don't worry if you don't understand every word you hear. That's impossible! You should concentrate only on the most important words. Secondly, try to get extra listening practice outside the classroom. For example, you can go to the student center and practice listening with their CDs. You should also listen to the radio in English and watch English movies. Next, it's a good idea to listen to presentations from the Internet. And it's easy to download presentations onto your computer. Finally, it's a good idea to listen to pop songs while you read the words at the same time. There are lots of Internet sites that give you the words of the most popular songs. That's all from me, and I hope this will help.
18.Who is the speaker?( )
A.An English teacher.
B.A university student.
C.A news reporter.
答案:B
19.What does the speaker suggest?( )
A.Practicing listening more after class.
B.Trying to understand every word when listening.
C.Listening to pop songs without reading the words.
答案:A
20.What is the speaker mainly talking about?( )
A.How to understand teachers better.
B.How to find interesting materials.
C.How to improve English listening.
答案:C

篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了语言学习应用程序被证明在学习过程中对学习者有帮助。
32.What's the reason why the results of the former research weren't always reliable?( )
A.It only considered users of a limited kind.
B.It just focused on positive results.
C.It was only carried out before class.
D.It used out of date methods.
答案:A
解析:细节理解题。根据第二段中的“But it mainly concentrated on ... not always reliable.(但它主要集中在那些上过语言课程的学习者身上,并且这些应用程序只是作为课后支持,所以结果并不总是可靠。)”可知,以前的研究结果并不总是可靠是因为它只考虑上过语言课程的用户,即它只考虑有限类别的用户。故选A。
33.What can we learn about the app Busuu from the text?( )
A.It's used by more advanced learners.
B.All the contents are free to use.
C.Most users consider it satisfying.
D.It's more popular with female learners.
答案:C
解析:推理判断题。根据第四段中的“More than 92% of the users ... or good.(超过92%的用户表示这款应用满足了他们的期望,86%的用户认为这款应用非常好或不错。)”可推知,大多数用户认为Busuu这一应用程序令人满意。故选C。
34.The underlined word “address” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “________”.( )
A.organise B.solve
C.increase D.practice
答案:B
解析:词义猜测题。根据画线词所在句“Besides, language learning apps ... speak a foreign language.”可知,语言学习应用程序创造了一个只有用户知道自己错误的环境,这可以解决学习者被要求说外语时表现紧张的问题。因此画线词意思是“解决”。故选B。
答案:C

I have had a hard time learning English since I entered senior high school, so I am writing to seek some guidance on how to improve it.
English writing is really a big challenge for me. First of all, my vocabulary is not large, which makes it impossible for me to use right words and phrases. Besides, English grammar is an obstacle to progress in my English writing, and the sentences I construct are much of Chinglish expression.
I would appreciate it if you can give me some advice. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Wang Ming

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

After hearing the boy's words, Pat, the English teacher, began to shake her belief in the sentence stuck in her mind. Her jealousy had all gone. Staring into the boy's eyes, Pat sensed something wrong hidden there. Obviously, the boy was telling a lie. Seeing the negative effect his behaviour would have on her students, Pat decided to teach the boy a lesson. Though she knew only a little Spanish, she decided to scold him using the language.
In order to inspire her students to speak English, Pat arranged for several people in the secondary school to have weekly talks, their topics ranging from travelling around the world to language learning methods. After several weeks, many of her students came running to her, telling her that they finally dreamed in English. This time, instead of being jealous, Pat felt proud of them, saying that she would also try her best to learn Spanish so that one day she would also dream in Spanish.

First of all, don’t worry if you don’t understand every word you hear. That’s impossible! You should concentrate only on the most important words.
Secondly, try to get extra listening practice outside the classroom. For example, you can go to the student center and practice listening with their CDs. You should also listen to the radio in English and watch English movies.
Next, it’s a good idea to listen to presentations from the Internet. And it’s easy to download presentations onto your computer.
19.What does the speaker suggest?( )
A.Practicing listening more after class.
B.Trying to understand every word when listening.
C.Listening to pop songs without reading the words.
答案:B

答案:A
20.What is the speaker mainly talking about?( )

Ways to Improve Vocabulary in Just One Day
The average American has a vocabulary in the thousands.

All three are extinct, meaning that they are no longer used and don't have any living followers which can carry the language to the next generation.

篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了语言学习应用程序被证明在学习过程中对学习者有帮助。
篇章导读
32.What's the reason why the results of the former research weren't always reliable?( )
A.It only considered users of a limited kind.
B.It just focused on positive results.
C.It was only carried out before class.
D.It used out of date methods.
解析:细节理解题。根据第二段中的“But it mainly concentrated on ... not always reliable.(但它主要集中在那些上过语言课程的学习者身上,并且这些应用程序只是作为课后支持,所以结果并不总是可靠。)”可知,以前的研究结果并不总是可靠是因为它只考虑上过语言课程的用户,即它只考虑有限类别的用户。故选A。
答案

33.What can we learn about the app Busuu from the text?( )
A.It's used by more advanced learners.
B.All the contents are free to use.
C.Most users consider it satisfying.
D.It's more popular with female learners.
解析:推理判断题。根据第四段中的“More than 92% of the users ... or good.(超过92%的用户表示这款应用满足了他们的期望,86%的用户认为这款应用非常好或不错。)”可推知,大多数用户认为Busuu这一应用程序令人满意。故选C。
答案
解析
34.The underlined word “address” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “________”.( )
A.organise B.solve
C.increase D.practice
解析:词义猜测题。根据画线词所在句“Besides, language learning apps ... speak a foreign language.”可知,语言学习应用程序创造了一个只有用户知道自己错误的环境,这可以解决学习者被要求说外语时表现紧张的问题。因此画线词意思是“解决”。故选B。
答案
解析
35.What is the main idea of the text?( )
A.Language learning apps are very popular with most language teachers.
B.Students won't suffer nervousness in learning languages by using Busuu.
C.Language learning apps are effective and satisfactory to language learners.
D.Students should be required to use apps for homework after class.
解析:主旨大意题。根据第一段内容可知,语言学习应用程序提供了学习词汇和练习语法的机会,下文提到了语言学习应用程序在学习过程中对学习者有帮助,且多数学习者对语言学习程序感到满意。由此可知,这篇文章的主旨是语言学习应用程序对语言学习者来说是有效和令人满意的。故选C。

Learning English can be hard, but don't give up! With enough practice and right ways, you can learn the language well. 36(____).
Watch movies and TV shows in English. 37(____). This will make it more fun, which will help you actually learn English. However, you should avoid watching movies or television shows with subtitles (字幕) in your native language—they will take your attention away and you will be less likely to learn English from it.

39(____). Aside from reading and listening in English, you should also spend some time improving your written English skills. Writing in English will help you to work on your sentence structure (句型), grammar and spelling. Try keeping an English diary where you write down a few sentences every day. It doesn't have to be personal—you could write about the weather, or what you ate for dinner.
Find a pen-pal (笔友) who is a native English speaker. Once your written English has improved, you could consider getting an English-speaking pen-pal! Dear Jack,
I have had a hard time learning English since I entered senior high school, so I am writing to seek some guidance on how to improve it.
Yours,
Wang Ming

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“But that’s wonderful,” said Pat. “What did all the people say to you?” she asked.
“I’m sorry, Miss Jones. That’s why I slept so badly all through the night. I didn’t understand a word they said. It was a nightmare!” Tim answered.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

答案
In order to inspire her students to speak English, Pat arranged for several people in the secondary school to have weekly talks, their topics ranging from travelling around the world to language learning methods. After several weeks, many of her students came running to her, telling her that they finally dreamed in English. This time, instead of being jealous, Pat felt proud of them, saying that she would also try her best to learn Spanish so that one day she would also dream in Spanish.
