When you stand in the starlight under the Milky Way,the night sky is one of the most incredible wonders many of us have not seen, which is under threat due to the constant march of human progress and consequent light pollution.Below are some of my favorite dark sky destinations around the world.
The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve,New Zealand
The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve is one of the best places in the country to view the night sky.Comprised of Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park and the Mackenzie Basin of Aotearoa New Zealand's South Island, the Dark Sky Reserve was certified in 2012 to continue protecting the dark skies in the area.
Stargazing(天体观察)enthusiasts should plan a visit to Mt John Observatory, tours of which must be booked in advance.
The Wild Atlantic Way,Ireland
Most visitors go to Ireland's western Wild Atlantic Way to explore beyond hot spots like Dublin and Cork, but the route is also fast becoming a great region for stargazing, thanks to the efforts of local communities along the Way.
If planning a trip, keep in mind that Ireland does have wet months where overcast skies are more likely to affect your stargazing prospects.
Wadi Rum,Jordan
Wadi Rum is also sometimes called “The Valley of the Moon”,though you're more likely to compare it to Mars if you visit it.Famous for its otherworldly landscapes in movies like Prometheus,Rogue One:A Star Wars Story and The Martian,Wadi Rum's towering red rock formations are extremely interesting to explore by day,and offer protection from any distant light pollution once the sun sets.
Stargazing in Wadi Rum is a breathtaking experience, and reminds us how our ancestors experienced the night sky for thousands of years.

Marei S.B.,25,got her first taste of her dream career this past summer in Colorado, where she interned(实习) at Woodward,Inc.,an American designer, manufacturer, and service provider of control system components for aircraft engines for some of the world's largest aircraft companies.Marei was part of the platform development engineering team at Woodward, helping train the operations and engineering teams on crucial aircraft components.
“This was my very first internship, and I was amazed by the aerospace industry,” she said.“We were always crunched under deadlines, and customers, understandably, requested large work orders. There was always a pressure to perform your best and provide them with the best possible units made at our plant. This taught me a lot about how demanding and fast-paced the industry is,but it also confirmed and reassured me that I really want to work in the aerospace industry.”
The internship required Marei to use both her technical engineering and interpersonal skills. She worked with both the engineering and operations teams at Woodward.“The operations team didn't necessarily have engineering degrees,so I had to break down technical terms into everyday words that we use,” she said.“It taught me to be specific and precise.Even if I have to repeat things three or four times, that's totally fine.I'd rather be more repetitive and ensure each step is correct than have to rework the entire process.”
Marei also helped train the teams through product displays and visual work instructions on how to manufacture specific products. That brought its own unique thrill,as the instructions she created could be used long after her internship ended.
Marei is planning to return to Woodward this winter. She'll have another semester's worth of engineering knowledge, which will further her into the career she's always wanted.“I got to apply many of the things I learned at Harvard,” she said.“The internship taught me the technical knowledge I'd need to learn from my courses that could be applied here.”

By studying light from hundreds of thousands of stars in the Milky Way,scientists have showed where the pieces that make up our galaxy came from.
In a new study, scientists broke the light coming from 600,000 stars into ranges that determine the stars' chemical composition. In doing this, they were able to find which groups of stars are at home in the Milky Way and which are interlopers(闯入者) with other origins.
“The Milky Way ate up lots of smaller galaxies but we did not have enough evidence for sure.” Sven Buder,a scientist said.“That's because simple images of stars in our Milky Way look the same whether they were born inside the galaxy or outside and then blended into the galaxy.”
For some time, data showing the motion patterns of stars has indicated that there are many populations of stars in the Milky Way that were not born there. This data has shown that some groups of stars move in different directions from the rest, suggesting that they could have arrived from outside of the galaxy.
Buder and his co-workers used the Anglo-Australian Telescope(AAT) to split the light of those stars into a range of individual colors.By studying these colorful ranges, scientists can see the differing chemical compositions of the observed stars.
“By scanning,we measured how abundant 30 elements, such as iron and manganese(锰),were, and how they appeared in different concentrations depending on where the star was born,” Buder said.
Stars that originated in the Milky Way appear greener, while those from outside glow in yellower shades.Understanding the origins of star populations in the Milky Way may help solve further mysteries of the galaxy's structure and composition. In the band of the Milky Way,which is visible in the night sky from Earth, older stars are separated from younger ones, but they have not yet figured out why.“Although the Milky Way is our home galaxy,we still do not understand how it formed and evolved,” Buder said.
8.What are scientists trying to know about the Milky Way
A.How many galaxies it has.
B.Where its stars came from.
C.When it came into existence.
D.How far it is away from the Earth.
9.Why did Buder use AAT to split the light of stars
A.To identify the colour of stars.
B.To judge the time of their births.
C.To find out their chemical make-up.
D.To research the process of their formation.
10.What stars look yellower in the Milky Way
A.The older stars.
B.The younger stars.
C.The stars appearing in the galaxy.
D.The stars coming outside the galaxy.
11.What is mainly stressed in the last paragraph
A.The result of the research.
B.The limit of the research.
C.The outlook of the research.
D.The significance of the research.

How you fold a paper airplane can determine how fast or how far it goes.A lot of people arrive at the best designs through trial and error, and perhaps a little bit of luck. But this question is no child's play for the researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne.
“Seemingly a simple toy,the paper airplane actually shows complex aerodynamic(空气动力学的) behaviors which are most often ignored,” the researchers said.“When the paper airplane is launched, there are complex physical interactions between the paper structure and the surrounding air, leading to a particular flight behavior.”
To examine the relationship between a folding pattern and the flight, they developed a robotic system that can make various paper planes and then test, analyze, and model their flight behaviors. In this experiment, the robot made and launched over 500 paper airplanes with 50 different designs. Then it collected data on how far each design flew and the characteristics of that flight.
The researchers sorted different shapes roughly into three types of “behavioral groups”.The first type follows a nosedive(俯冲) path, which means a short flight distance before landing on the ground. The second type does a glide(滑行),falling at a consistent and relatively controlled rate, and covers a longer distance than the nosedive. The third type is a recovery glide, falling steadily before leveling off and staying at a certain height above the ground.
“With the high precision and automation of the robotic system,large-scale experiments can be performed to improve design,” the researchers noted.“The robot designer can deepen our understanding and exploration of design problems, and could otherwise be challenging to observe any behavior.”
This insight can also apply to the changeable flight paths of small flying vehicles.“These models can be used to improve a real-world robotic design to identify wing shapes that fly a given distance,” the researchers said.
12.What can be inferred from the researchers' words in paragraph 2
A.It is difficult to design a perfect paper airplane.
B.There is more to explore about paper airplanes.
C.The paper airplane is a popular toy for children.
D.It is likely to control paper airplanes' behaviors.
13.What can the robotic system do
A.Promote paper airplanes to fly much farther.
B.Leave paper airplanes high above the ground.
C.Create paper airplanes with different designs.
D.Change paper airplanes' flight characteristics.
14.What did the researchers expect to do through the experiment
A.Enhance the design of airplanes.
B.Prove the precision of airplanes.
C.Predict the development of airplanes.
D.Increase the automation of airplanes.
15.What is the main idea of the text
A.Researchers test their innovative ideas on paper airplanes.
B.Researchers design a real-world robot with paper airplanes.
C.Researchers can design various wing shapes for paper airplanes.
D.Researchers create a robot to learn more about paper airplanes' flight.

Exploring the planets with an amateur telescope
If you're a new telescope owner, the whole sky is your playground. 16 The brightest ones stand out in the night sky and are easy to spot through your telescope.
17 In general, small telescopes with low magnification (放大率) will not show as much detail as larger amateur telescopes at higher magnification.
Many experienced amateur observers let their telescopes get used to outside temperatures. 18 While the equipment is cooling down, observers gather their star charts, warm clothes, and other accessories (配件).
Most telescopes come with eyepieces. It's always best to check the guide to see which one is best for planetary viewing. In general, look for eyepieces with names like Pl ssl or Orthoscopic,in lengths of three to nine millimeters. 19
If this all seems confusing,it's always a good idea to take the telescope to a local astronomy club,a camera store,or a planetarium (天文馆) for advice from more experienced observers. 20
It's important to research which stars will be in the sky at any given time.Magazines such as Sky & Telescope publish charts each month on their websites showing what's visible.Astronomy software packages, hike Stellarium, have much of the same information. There are also smartphone apps that provide star charts at your fingertips.
A.This takes about 30 minutes.
B.There's a wealth of information available online,too.
C.There's no “one size fits all” solution to planet-gazing.
D.Which one to choose depends on the size and focal length of the telescope.
E.But if you're a beginner, you may want to start by looking for planets.
F.The easiest object in the sky to observe with a telescope is the Moon.
G.Magnification means how many times larger a telescope will make an object look.

第二节
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As I stepped out of the car and onto the unfamiliar driveway of my father's home in Ontario,Canada.I couldn't help but feel upset. My mother had just passed away in a car accident and now I was being forced to live with a father I barely knew.
My father was a metal sculpture artist, and I was not sure if I would ever fit into his world.Soon,I found comfort in exploring the nearby wilderness.Yet I couldn't ignore the sadness and anger that welled up inside me when I saw a construction crew destroying a small wilderness area nearby. That's when I came across a nest of goose eggs, abandoned and fragile.
Without hesitation,I brought them home. When the first crack appeared and a tiny head poked through,my heart swelled with purpose and affection. As they grew, the baby geese followed me everywhere.Father smiled and remarked that they surely thought me their mother.
My geese grew steadily but time was not.Father realized without a real mother's guidance, the geese would never learn how to migrate south for the winter and winter's arrival could be tough. That's when my father came up with a daring plan.He was an amateur pilot, and he would teach me how to fly an aircraft.Together,we would lead the geese on their migratory journey. It was a risky plan, but I was willing to do anything to help my feathered friends.
Each day of flight training with Father,I felt myself gaining confidence in the skies.Yet with the journey approaching, more and more fear filled me.Crossing the border into the US and flying hundreds of miles to the reservation in North Carolina seemed a mission impossible.
Father gave me a supportive smile, his face reflecting a mix of determination and concern.“We've trained for this, and we're a team.Just like you and your geese,” he said, placing a hand on my shoulder.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Flying south,we started the migration, followed by my geese.
I said goodbye to Father in the hospital and continued the flight.

Flying south,we started the migration, followed by my geese. The journey was both exhausting and challenging.Yet,with each passing day,my bond with the geese strengthened, and my confidence in piloting the aircraft grew.Over cities, mountains, and rivers,we witnessed the diverse beauty of the North American. When we landed to add fuel,Father accidentally broke his arm and had to stay in the hospital to receive treatment. He encouraged me to fly alone.Feeling upset and uncertain,I nodded.
I said goodbye to Father in the hospital and continued the flight. My father's belief in me fueled my determination. The geese followed with a trust that warmed my heart. As we approached the reservation in North Carolina,a sense of relief filled me.I landed my aircraft and my geese were greeted by welcoming honks of thousands of birds. As I stood there, surrounded by new-found friends and family,I realized that life's challenges had not only brought me closer to my father but had also led to the creation of a unique and enduring bond with the geese.
