Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters.More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach.Worse still,as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend,Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up.Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags.To their disappointment, after a day's hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water.Going home with aching legs and arms,Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently.Noticing their low spirits,Mother asked gently,“You two looked so down. What happened?”Exchanging glances with Peter,Maria replied in a low voice,“It's those annoying plastic bags.We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair's disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted,“Well,it's really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.”“Just two of us.”complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other.Suddenly,an idea flashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes,that's the point! We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.

We can also make a video!” Peter added. The next few hours witnessed their heated discussion and growing confidence in a clean and beautiful coast. The next day, they went to the beach and filmed a short video showing plastic bags lying on the beach and floating in the sea.Peter, who was good at writing, wrote an article talking about the present situation of the beach and asking people to take part in the clean-up.
Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on the Internet. To their amazement, their post went viral online immediately.Countless comments flooded in saying how heartbroken they were when looking at the polluted beach and ocean. What amazed Maria and Peter more was that numerous people in their community, encouraged by their efforts, offered to join in their clean-up.More and more people came to the beach to collect plastic bags and they also appealed to others to avoid throwing or using plastic bags.A year later, with their joint and continuous effort, the coast regained its beauty and Maria and Peter regained their long-awaited pleasure.

In 2015,Professor Wang Zhenyi, who specializes in treating acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) (急性早幼粒细胞白血病),received a letter of thanks from America. The writer of the letter was Mrs Bernadette Giandomenico, who once suffered from APL but was cured with all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) (全反式维甲酸),a treatment developed by Wang and his medical team.
Working at Ruijin Hospital,Wang has been devoting his life to the treatment of leukemia. He received the country's highest honor in science and technology in 2010.
Born in 1924 in Shanghai,Wang was inspired by a family friend's experience of pursuing a career in medicine as a child. His grandmother's death caused by typhoid further strengthened his resolve to fight against diseases and rescue patients. With outstanding academic performance,Wang became a doctor at Guangci Hospital, today's Ruijin Hospital.
In 1978,a research paper from Israeli experts gave Wang inspiration to study how leukemia cells could become normal.Nonetheless, his research didn't progress as expected. In 1983,another research paper shed light on his study. As the paper suggested, after being treated with 13-cis-Retinoic Acid, white blood cells in patients with APL could become normal.Considering the difficulties and high cost of producing a drug made from 13-cis-Retinoic Acid,Wang's team decided to replace that ingredient with ATRA,and they finally verified its positive effect after several months' experiments. In 1986,the drug was first adopted in treating a five-year-old patient. It turned out to be successful. After eight years of research,Wang's team eventually made the first breakthrough in the battle against APL.
To make sure every APL patient could afford the medicine,Wang has not patented his research result to date.“One cannot be a real doctor if one does not have expertise in medicine,” Wang said in an interview.“However, without a kind heart,a skilled doctor may cause harm to patients.”
Having worked in the field of hematopathology (血液病理学) for over 70 years,Wang has been well recognized for his remarkable contribution to saving lives.

Claude Monet,a French painter who was the leader and advocate of the Impressionist style. When Claude, the eldest son of a grocer, was five years old,the family moved to the Normandy coast, where his father took over the management of his family's grocery business. This event has more than biographical significance. It was Monet's childhood, spent along the beaches and the knowledge he gained of the sea and the rapidly shifting Normandy weather, that would one day give rise to his fresh vision of nature. In these early years he also finished pencil sketches of sailing ships, which were almost technical in their clear descriptiveness. His aunt,Marie-Jeanne Lecadre, was an amateur painter, and, perhaps at her suggestion,Claude went to study drawing with a local artist. But his life as a painter did not begin until he was befriended by Eugène Boudin, who introduced Monet to the practice of painting in the open air.The experience set the direction for Monet, who for more than 60 years would concentrate on visible phenomena.
As the 1870s began,Monet continued his pursuit of natural phenomena. In order to avoid the Franco-German War,he left his family and traveled to London. There,he was introduced to Paul Durand-Ruel,who was to become his dealer. The years he lived there marked the height of the Impressionist movement. He helped organize an independent exhibition of the Impressionists' work in 1874.Impression:Sunrise (1872),one of Monet's works at the exhibition, inspired the journalist Louis Leroy to give the group their name.
Monet attracted the dedicated support of collectors throughout his career, most notably from Americans. His influence on other artists was wide-ranging.During the years 1886 to 1914,a colony(群体) of mainly American artists gathered around him and regarded him as the best example of modern French painting. They adopted his fresh palette(调色板),subject matter, and natural style and eventually introduced these elements to American art.
5.Which influenced Monet's new vision of nature
A.His love for the sea and beaches.
B.His childhood experiences in Normandy.
C.His early life spent with Eugène Boudin.
D.His early years of pencil sketches practice.
6.Where was Monet educated according to the passage
A.In a formal artistic school.
B.From his aunt.
C.At home by self-teaching.
D.From other artists.
7.Why did Monet get to London
A.To meet his dealer.
B.To paint more in the open air.
C.To keep away from the war.
D.To launch the art movement.
8.What's the last paragraph mainly about
A.The criticism to Monet.
B.Monet's influence on other artists.
C.The popularity of Monet in America.
D.Monet's art achievements.

Ⅰ.【语篇解读】 本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了获得了国家最高科学技术奖的王振义院士的个人经历以及他对白血病的研究过程。
1.C [细节理解题。根据第一段中的“received a letter of thanks from America(收到一封来自美国的感谢信)”及“The writer of the letter was Mrs.Bernadette Giandomenico, who once suffered from APL but was cured with...a treatment developed by Wang and his medical team.(这封信的作者是贝尔纳黛特·詹多梅尼科太太,她曾患有急性早幼粒细胞白血病,但用全反式维甲酸治愈了,这是由王振义和他的医疗团队开发的一种治疗方法。)”可知,詹多梅尼科太太给王教授写信是为了表达她的感激。]
