For over twenty years, a group of ladies living at a senior living community in Dallas have made thousands of hand-knit(编织) hats and toys, bringing warmth and support to children both in Texas and overseas. And they call themselves the Knit Wits.
Every Friday, they gather around a long table with wool and needles to lend a hand. Their latest project is a cooperation with Children’s Health in Dallas to create homemade caps for babies facing heart problems.
Stover, a member of the Knit Wits got the idea while talking with her daughter, a doctor at the hospital. For the past year, the group has sent dozens of caps for the babies. “The caps are themed around the holidays, ” Stover says, “with designs representing Autumn, New Year and spring. The little caps have become a colorful symbol of hope and joy for the center's youngest patients and their families."
The mini hats can help develop the bonding between babies and caregivers, preserving the smell of the adult next to take baby’s skin. Caregivers are able to wear the hat on their body to carry their smell before placing the hat back on the baby, easing the babies’ stress. Throughout the babies’ hospital admission, many holidays have been celebrated, but often the babies are too critical to be dressed up for photos. Thanks to the generosity of the Knit Wits, the baby hat provides the perfect festive touch.
Marianne is 102 years old and still knitting. “Being creative, being busy and having something good to think about make my life colorful.” she said. The Knit Wits also sent knit dolls to children from African countries. They’ve proven that a simple act of kindness can make such a difference in the lives of those facing challenging circumstances.

Sir Isaac Newton was a great astronomer. Although he did not use his reflecting telescope to discover new astronomical phenomena, he did employ it to completely transform our view of the world we inhabit and the universe at large.
Reflecting telescopes use mirrors to reflect and focus light and enlarge images, distinguishing them from refractors (折射望远镜) that rely on lenses(透镜).Their simplicity in construction and ability to achieve much greater sizes than refractors have led to a transformation in our astronomical knowledge and comprehension of the universe.
As light passes through glass, various colors or bands are refracted at varying angles, leading to chromatic aberration (色差) and consequently, twisted images when viewed through a lens. In the time of Newton, the technology for producing glass and lenses was still very primitive, and the challenges associated with chromatic aberration had not been adequately addressed. Today we can make lenses that have almost no chromatic aberration but we can’t make them very large. As the size of a lens increases significantly, it becomes extremely heavy, causing its own weight to distort the lens and consequently ruin the image quality.
Newton’s telescope solved these problems. A mirror doesn’t allow light to pass. It simply bounces all the light off the surface. This means there's no chromatic aberration. Plus, because we only need to bounce light off the surface, we can support the entire mirror on a base, reducing its weight. This allows us to build much larger mirrors without any distortion.
While Galileo is credited with the discovery of moons around Jupiter and Halley with predicting the comet’s orbit, what Newton did do was tie in with mathematics, astronomy and our comprehension of the universe through the use of his telescope and his universal gravitation theory.
The original telescope constructed by Newton is preserved and maintained by the Royal Society of London. It is showcased in London and occasionally embarks on international tours as an element of exhibitions.
28. What do we know about Newton's telescope
A. It has a great size with complex structure. B. It relies on mirrors instead of lenses.
C. It can make the image smaller than a refractor. D. It helped Newton uncover novel astronomical phenomena.
29. What problems did Newton's telescope manage to solve
A. Restrictions on the production. B. Issues with image quality.
C. Challenges of lens making. D. Limits of light's passing angles.
30. Why does the author mention Galileo and Halley
A. To state a fact. B. To raise a point. C. To explain a concept. D. To make a comparison.
31. What is the main idea of the article
A. Newton's telescope is preserved by the Royal Society as a historical scientific antique
B. Newton's telescope simplified construction and enabled larger sizes compared to refractors.
C. Newton's telescope innovated astronomy by solving problems caused by lens limitations.
D. Newton’s telescope achieved breakthrough improvements over refractors, observing new astronomical phenomena.

Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one's personal life or in the general society. Progress must lead to a better life and a better way of doing things. All these, however, remain true only in so far as people want to accept technology and move forward by finding new and more efficient(高效的)ways of doing things.
However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the “good old days”, efficiency comes with a price. When communication becomes more efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish to. The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication gadgets, such as mobile phones and tablets, people often do not take the efforts to visit one another personally.
With efficiency also comes mass production. Factories have improved efficiency because many tasks are left to machines. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For example, many handicrafts(手工艺品) are now produced in a factory. Mass production lowers the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.
However, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is required for old products to stay old.
It is people's attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people's attitude. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new "past" is created.
32. What does the underlined word “gadgets” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Skills. B. Messages. C. Devices. D. Barriers.
33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The process of mass production. B. The unique designs of handicrafts.
C. The disadvantages of mass production. D. The function of technology in mass production.
34. What can be learned about technology from Paragraph 4
A. It can sometimes slow social progress. B. It can destroy old traditions.
C. It can be used to protect old products. D. It can be used to correct mistakes.
35. What can be concluded from the last paragraph
A. Technology can create a new past. B. Progress can suit the needs of daily life.
C. People review the past with great regret. D. People's attitude decides the use of technology.

Fear of missing out
It's Friday night. While many of your friends may celebrate by going to the movies or checking out a restaurant that’s just opened, you've decided to spend this special night of the week by yourself. The night is yours to enjoy. If you think this sounds relaxing, you’re not alone. At least for a little while until you start wondering if you've made the right choice. _______36____ Suddenly, the quiet evening you planned for yourself begins to lose its initial appeal, and you find your excitement quickly turns to anxiety.
____37____ A recent study defined FOMO as “the uneasy feeling that you're missing out —your peers are doing or in possession of more or something better than you”.
Fear of missing out often develops as a result of deeper unhappiness. Research has found that those with low levels of general life satisfaction are more likely to experience FOMO. ____38____ Active users of social media have a higher probability of comparing their achievements with others’. Rather than finding happiness through their own experiences, they begin worrying that theirs aren't objectively better than anyone else's.
The consequences of FOMO are significant and far-reaching. One study conducted with first-year university students found that fear of missing out was associated with tiredness, stress and sleep problems.
____39____ Begin with gratitude. By reflecting on what you already have, you're less likely to put valuable mental energy in worrying about what you don't.
Embrace JOMO, or the joy of missing out. ____40____ So, turn off your phones and tablets, and engage in something you enjoy while resisting the urge to upload and share it. While this may take practice and perseverance(坚持不懈), the results are well worth the effort.
A. Therefore, you see yourself in new ways.
B. So how can you overcome the fear
C. Who is easily affected by FOMO
D. Fear of missing out, or FOMO, is a common feeling.
E. JOMO allows you to focus on what you really want at any given moment.
F. A doubt begins sinking in as you imagine the fun your friends are having in your absence.
G. Further worsening the all-too-common feeling is the rise of social media use.

Many of Hall's findings are_____49____ in research today. Hall believed that adolescents are highly affected by depression and described a “curve of despondency(消沉)” that starts at the age of 11, ____50____ at 15, then falls steadily until the age of 23. Modern research acknowledges a similar pattern. The causes of depression that Hall ____51____are surprisingly familiar: suspicion of being disliked and having seemingly insuperable character faults, and “the____52____ of hopeless love". He believed the self-consciousness of adolescence leads to criticizing self and others. This view mirrors later studies, which argue that teenagers' advanced____53____ skills allow them to “read between the lines”, while also intensifying their sensitivity to situations. Even Hall's claim that criminal activity is more common in the teenage years, reaching the top around 18, still ____54____.

At the sound of his mom coughing, Jeremy knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern, “Mom, are you ok ” “Honey,” Mom said weakly. “I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal(燕麦)for breakfast and watch cartoons. I'm going to stay in bed.”
Jeremy poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she was staying in bed all day. How could Jeremy help First, he wiped up the crumbs of cereal he left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly, so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do Jeremy thought. Saturday was the day when mom did laundry. Jeremy loved to watch the clothes spinning in the machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the laundry basket, inside which there was his mother's favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks.
Jeremy opened the door to the washer and put the clothing inside. He had watched Mom do laundry lots of times, so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine. Finally, he closed the door and pressed the big button that said “START.” Jeremy looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in, and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy!
Jeremy watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was done. Jeremy opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer. Everything seemed clean, and Jeremy felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.

应用文
Good afternoon, everyone.
Someone once told me, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” I didn’t know its meaning at first, but I do now. When I faced difficulties in the past, it felt like they would never end. Everything was going wrong and getting worse day by day. However, my feelings changed when I talked to a good friend of mine. She experienced many of the same difficulties as I did. She advised me to look at things differently. For example, when we fail, it’s a great learning experience that can put us on the right track. Gradually, I became strong and skillful enough to handle difficulties. Tough times don’t get me down easily now.
Thank you.
