Reading
It was the middle of winter. Snow lay thick on the ground. The woman knew that the nearest village was miles away.
When it grew dark, she turned a suitcase into a bed and put the children inside it, covering them with all the clothes she could find. During the night, it got terribly cold. The woman kept as near as she could to the children and even tried to get into the case herself, but it was too small.
Early next morning, she heard planes passing overhead and wondered how she could send a signal. Then she had an idea. She stamped out the letters ‘SOS’ in the snow. Fortunately, a pilot saw the signal and sent a message by radio to the nearest town. It was not long before a helicopter arrived on the scene to rescue the survivors of the plane crash.

Discussion
Keep calm
Try to get rescued by signaling help
There are many other ways to signal SOS, do some further reading.
1. Signal Using a Mirror or Anything Reflective(反光的)
On a sunny day, you can use a mirror to reflect(反射) the sunlight to an airplane, a ship or any rescue vehicle. First, hold the mirror at the edges and face the sun, reflect the light from the mirror onto your hand.
Second, keep the mirror close to your eye and slowly move it, so the bright light can hit your target(目标).
Third, move the mirror left-right, not up-down.The pilot of the plane may see the light. Reflecting the light three short times, three long times, three short times, you will let them know that you are in trouble.
1. How can you reflect the light to your target
2How to let others know you’re in danger
① Hold the mirror at the edges and face the sun to reflect the light from the mirror,
② keep te mirror close to your eye and slowly move it to hit your target.
③ move the mirror left-right, not up-down
Reflect the light three short times, three long times, three short times.
2. Signal Using Smoke and Fire
Smoke and fire are among the most recognizable signals. They work best whether you are signaling during the day or night.
However, a single fire cannot make a signal. You’ll have to make three fires. First, you need to look for an open place. You will then need to make three fires to take the shape of a triangle(三角形). Place each fire about 100 feet apart. Rescuers around the world know what it means and will quickly come to you. You can also light three fires and place them in a straight line with each fire being 100 feet from each other.
1. How many fires do you have to make to signal SOS
2. How to place each fire
Three
①You can place them in a shape of a triangle or in a straight line.
② Place each fire about 100 feet apart
3. Signal Using a Whistle(口哨)
The International Whistle Code for help is much easier. All you have to do is to blow the whistle three times. Three loud, short blasts(响声) on your survival whistle, each lasting about three seconds. Take a breath or two between each blast to give the sound time to travel and catch your breath, then repeat. Stop for a few seconds after you’ve completed the three blast, and then repeat to give yourself the best chance of being heard.
Nearly anywhere in the world, if someone were to hear your three blasts, they would recognize it as a call for “help”.
1. How to blow the whistle when you want to signal SOS
2. What do you need to do between each blast
3. After you have completed the three blast, what do you need to do
Blow the whistle three loud, short times.
You need to take a breath or two.
You need to repeat to give yourself the best chance of being heard.
4. Signal using a flashlight(手电筒)or your mobile phone
Obviously you can use flashlights. If you have a target(目标) you are trying to signal, flash fast three times, slowly three times, and then quickly three times. The fast flash time does not last more than one second, and the slow flash time lasts more than one second. If you don’t have a flashlight, use your mobile phone. That of course, you don’t have signal to make calls.
1. How to use the flashlight to send a signal for help
2. How long does each flash last
3. What can you use to flash light if you don’t have a flashlight
Flash fast three times, slowly three times, and then quickly three times
The fast flash time does not last more than one second, and the slow flash time lasts more than one second.
You can use a mobile phone instead.
