We should all have at least one fire extinguisher (灭火器) somewhere in our house or office building. However, it's not enough to simply keep an extinguisher somewhere. The best way to be ready for a sudden fire is to study this guide carefully and review it from time to time.
{1}Have a clear exit route (疏散路线)
Before using the fire extinguisher, make sure you have a clear exit route. If you cannot put out the fire, you will need to make a safe exit. Also, make sure everyone else is out.
{2} Report the fire
Even if the fire appears manageable, you should always have the firemen on the way. Once they arrive, they can double check to see if the fire has been completely put out.
{3} Stand back
Face the fire and keep your back to the clear exit. You should stay between 1.8 and 2.5 meters away from the flames (火焰) as you prepare to use the fire extinguisher.
{4} Use the extinguisher
It can be difficult to think clearly during a fire. One method to help you remember how to use an extinguisher is to remember “PASS”:
P-Pull: Pull the pin on the fire extinguisher.
A-Aim (瞄准): Aim low. Point the nozzle at the bottom of the fire.
S-Squeeze(挤压): Squeeze the handle to let out the extinguishing chemicals.
Sweep S-: Sweep the nozzle from side to side until the fire is put out.
{5}Keep an eye on the fire
After the fire appears to be out, continue to watch the fire area to make sure it doesn't start burning again. If the fire does start up again, repeat the “PASS”.
{6} Get to a safe place
Once the fire is out, or if you are unable to put it out, find a place out of reach of the fire.
( )44. What is the text about
A.How to prevent a big fire.
B.How to use an extinguisher.
C.How to keep an extinguisher.
D.How to deal with a sudden fire.
( )45. Why is a fireman needed even if the fire is under control
A.To teach useful methods.
B.To make sure the fire is out.
C.To find the missing people.
D.To help leave the dangerous place.
( )46. 【中考趋势题】Which order of the pictures describes “PASS”?
A.②①④③ B.③②④① C.②①③④ D.③①④②
( )47. In which theme (主题) activity of a school can the text be used
A.A better self. B.Safety with me.
C.Young scientists. D.Home, sweet home.

The past years have shown that we need to prepare for the worst earthquakes to come. So an earthquake emergency kit should be something we should have. Some people say that they don't have time and money to prepare emergency kits for earthquakes. Well, that may not be a problem because you can buy your own earthquake emergency kit online.
Some people don't think an earthquake emergency kit is necessary. This is totally wrong and here are the reasons.
According to researchers, in general, around 275 earthquakes are felt every day around the world. Half of these are large enough to ask that families should own earthquake emergency kits. There is a 30% higher chance that you will survive (幸存) an earthquake if you have an earthquake emergency kit.
Some people think they can go to a shelter after an earthquake. However, instead of depending on your shelter, an earthquake emergency kit is your best choice when an earthquake happens. There may be too many people in the shelter. You may not find food or water. And you may not be able to get medicine.
Some people don't think they need an earthquake emergency kit because they don't live near the fault line (断层线). But whether you are near the fault line or far from it, owning one for your household is still a must. Studies show that some states that are near the fault line have earthquake magnitudes (震级) of above 4.5. This only means that you never know how earthquakes hit until they hit you by surprise.
So if you don't have an earthquake emergency kit at home, make one yourself or purchase one online.
( )48. According to Paragraph 1, the writer thinks that ____.
A.the worst earthquakes may happen in the near future
B.it's not difficult to get an earthquake emergency kit now
C.it's unnecessary for some people to get an earthquake emergency kit
D.it's hard for some people to get an earthquake emergency kit
( )49. What is the first reason for getting an earthquake emergencykit
A.It is good for your whole family.
B.You don't need to go to a shelter.
C.It increases your chances of survival.
D.You can provide yourself with what you need.
( )50. What's the writer's attitude toward going to a shelter instead of preparing an earthquake emergency kit
A.He is against it.
B.He is for it.
C.He doesn't care about it.
D.He doesn't have any ideas.

A typhoon is a very big and powerful storm. It forms in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. It has strong winds that blow in a circle around a center called the eye. It also has a lot of rain and sometimes thunder and lightning(雷电).
Typhoons form over the warm ocean water of the tropics(热带).When warm wet air over the water rises, cooler air takes the place of it. The cooler air will then get warm and start to rise. This cycle causes huge storm clouds to form. These storm clouds will begin to move around a central point with the spin(旋转) of the Earth. If there is enough warm water, the cycle will continue and the storm clouds and wind speeds will grow causing a typhoon to form.
Typhoons can be very dangerous because they can do great harm to the land and the people who live near the coastline. They can make big waves that cover the coastline with water. They can knock down trees, houses and other buildings with their strong winds. They can also cause mudslides(泥石流) with their heavy rain.
Typhoons are part of nature and we cannot stop them from happening. But we can learn more about them and how to protect ourselves and our environment from their influence.
