On May 18, 1980, the volcano erupted suddenly. A huge cloud of ash and gas rose into the sky. The ash covered the sun, and it became dark during the day. Hot lava flowed down the mountain, destroying everything in its way. The eruption also caused mudslides (泥石流) and floods.

五、书面表达(参考范文)
Dear Tom,
I'm glad to tell you something about a natural disaster I know. A big earthquake hit Wenchuan in Sichuan on May 12, 2008. It destroyed a large number of houses and many people lost their lives.
After the earthquake, soldiers and volunteers rushed to the area to help. They searched for survivors, provided food and water, and built temporary shelters.
This disaster made me deeply sad, but I was also moved by people's kindness and the strong will of the survivors. It shows that love and unity can overcome any difficulty.
I hope you can learn something from it. If you want to know more, feel free to ask me.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
