After a month of fires that gave off record-breaking amounts of polluting gas, smoke from Siberian wildfires is now making its way to the west coast of the United States.
The New York Times’ Somini Sengupta reports that Aretic wildfires in June 2020 caused more pollution than the data that had been collected in the previous 18 years. Seasonal wildfire s are common in Siberia, but this year's fires are unusually widespread in part because of a cl imate change-driven heatwave. The Arctic is experiencing climate change-driven warming f aster than the rest of the earth, which sets up the dry conditions that make fires spread.
“I was surprised to see a fire burning 10 kilometers south of a bay of the Laptev Sea,which is like, the sea ice factory of the world,” said fire researcher Jessica McCarty fromMiami Uni versity in Ohio. “When I went into fire science as an undergraduate student, if someone had tol d me I'd be studying fire regimes(制度) in Greenland and the Arctic,I would have laughed at th em.”
“This June's Arctic fires beat the pollution record set in 2019,” said Mark Parrington, who works with the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service tracking worldwide wildfires. So me of the fires may have spent the winter months smoldering(闷燃) only to grow again in wa rmer weather. And the weather has certainly gotten warmer. In June, aRussian town above the Arctic circle called Verkhoyansk hit a high temperature of 1.004degrees Fahrenheit.
The current situation in the Arctic circle shows that previous predictions(预测)“underesti
mate what is going on in reality,” earth scientist Vladmir Romanovsky told. He added that temperature observation in the High Arctic made in the last 15 years weren't expected for ano ther seventy years.
Millions of acres of land are on fire this wildfire season. Most of the wildfires are located in Siberia's Sakha Republic, which sees wildfires frequently, but fires are also spreading further north and into unusual ecosystems, like those that are characterized by permafrost(永冻土).
What made 2020 Arctic wildfires extremely widespread
The warmer climate. B. Stronger seasonal winds.
C. More fires caused by humans. D. Humans' poorer control of them.
What did Jessica MeCarty want to say in paragraph 3
She used to laugh at those who studied the Arctic.
She had decided to be a firefighter in Greenland.
She used to think fires rarely happened in the Arctic.
She had shown little interest in studying fire science.
What can we learn from paragraph 4
The Arctic fires may go out in winter.
B.2020 Arctic fires may be related to those in 2019.
C. The pollution record in the Arctic is broken each year.
D.2020 Arctic fires affected temperatures across Russia.
What can the underlined word“underestimate” in paragraph 5 be best replaced by
refer to B. focus on
C. judge incorrectly D. ignore completely

“The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.” When it comes to device addiction, this may very well be the case. If you believe that how you engage with your smartphone has no impact on your children, think again.
One study looked at 200 families and noted that the children of parents with phone add ictions were much more likely to have behavior issues. In short, this obsession led to “tec hnoference” or interruption of everyday interactions between parents and kids. In some case s, this interruption happened in face-to-face conversations, and in other cases, the devices disr upted playtime or meals. When this type of“technoference” occurred, parents rated their chil dren as displaying more behavior problems, including whining, losing temper, sulking(生闷气), and becoming frustrated.
In addition, according to children development experts, there are bilateral(双边的)signalin
g systems that occur between adults and children, aiding the construction of the basic architect ure of the brain. For example, infants and toddlers are highly engaged with the vocal cues of their parents that tend to happen with simplified grammar, a high-pitched tone, and exaggerat ed enthusiasm. This mode of relational conversation is incredibly important to a child's develop ment.
With the arrival of smartphones, many parents are distracted and stuck in what experts are calling“continuous partial attention” mode. This leads to significant and recurring disruptions to the parent-child conversation flow, which can impair not only a child's language learning ability but also their school achievements overall.
While your habit may seem harmless, your kids may actually be imitating your behavior and forming dependence of their own. One study reported that some teenagers may spend up to 12 hours— half of an entire day— online and mindlessly swiping through social media apps without engaging in any one piece of content beyond a few seconds.
As a parent, the best thing you can do is lead by example. Try to limit time spent with technology, especially when it diverts(转移) your attention from other priorities. Shut down s martphones at dinner. Set aside phone-free time each day to engage with your children without the distraction that technology brings. While you may not be able to completely cut ties with new modes of communication, you can be sure that your children get the one-on-one time they need to develop into healthy, happy adults.
Which is TRUE according to the studies in the passage
All parents rate their children's behavior at parent-child time interruptions.
Children's poor school achievements are due to their addiction to social media.
The more engagement of parents, the better development of speech in children.
Children imitate parents' behavior but form their own harmless habits.
What's the purpose of paragraph 3
To further scientifically explain a child's behavioral problem.
To give an argument for the problem of a child's language learning ability.
To support the argument for a child's addiction to devices.
To present background information for the topic of the passage.
In what tone does the writer speak to parents in the last paragraph
Disrespectful. B. Apologetic.
C. Negative. D. Friendly.
Why does the writer start the passage with the quote“The apple doesn't fa ll far from the tree.”
To stress children will follow parents' example.
To provide evidence of device addiction.
To show the close bond between parents and children.
To highlight the final solution to device addiction.
★D
We have more ways to access music than at any time in history and a whole world of unf amiliar styles to explore. The thrill of discovering new songs and new sounds can enrich pe ople of all ages. Except, most of the time, it doesn't. Our willingness to explore new, unfamiliar music declines with age.
Academics have coined the term“open-caredness” to describe this phenomenon. Until ar ound the age of 11, children are generally happy to engage with unfamiliar music. Early adoles cence sees a reduction in open-earedness, but is accompanied by an intense increase in interest in music more generally. Open-earedness increases slightly during young adulthood, and then d eclines as we age.
A major study involving more than 250,000 participants confirmed these changing beh aviors. It also showed that the significance we give to music after adolescence declines, and the amount of music we listen to reduces from a high point of 20% of our waking time during ado lescence, to 13% in adulthood.
Researchers have different theories to account for these trends. One explanation for
age-based reduction in music consumption simply assumes that responsibility-burdened adults may have less free time at their disposal(自由支配) to explore their musical interests than you nger people.
Some interpret the observed decline in music engagement in terms of psychosocial mat uration. Adolescents use music as an identity mark er and engage with it to navigate social circ les. Adults have developed personalities and established social groups. As such, drivers to eng age with new music are lessened.
Some researchers argue that we shouldn't use a person's age to predict if their musical taste will stay the same, without first thinking about how we enjoy and use music at different stages of our lives. Teenagers tend to be very aware of what they are listening to. Adults who use mu sic as motivation or accompaniment for activities such as exercise or household chores may be less conscious of the extent to which they actually do listen to new music.
What does the term“open-caredness” refer to in the passage
The ability to play music.
The willingness to explore new music.
The interest in music during adolescence.
The significance of music in daily life.
According to the study, how does the amount of music listened to change as we age
It remains consistent throughout life.
It increases from childhood to adulthood.
It peaks during adolescence and then decreases.
It gradually declines from childhood to adulthood.
What factor is suggested as one cause for a reduced interest in new music as people age
An increase in hearing sharpness.
Less spare time due to responsibilities.
An intense decrease in interest in music.
Changes in personality and social groups.

根据第四段中的“One explanation for age-based reduction in music consumption simply assumesthat responsibility-burde ned adults may have less free time at their disposal(自由支配) to explore their musicalinterests than younger people.”

D。根据上文“Is it better than your computer or an external drive The answer is a definite puters crashall the time.(它 比你的电脑或外部驱动器更好吗 答案是肯定的。电脑总是会崩溃。)”可知,此处是在比较云存储与传统存储方式(如电脑和外部驱动器)的优劣,并指出电脑容易崩溃的问题。D 选项“This is the most commoncause of lost work and mem ories.(这是工作和记忆丢失的最常见原因。)”
F。根据上文“There are so many advantages to cloud computing, from the ability to access your data fromwherever, whenever, to not needing expensive external storage devices.(云计算有很多优点,比如无论何时何地都能访问你的数据,不需要昂贵的外部存储设备。)” F 选项“The onlydisadvantage, however, is that you need Internet t o access files.(然而,唯一的缺点是你需要互联网才能访问文件。)”

was awarded。
known。
gently。
making。
but。句子使用了“Not only… but also…” 因此,在“Not only do I treat myx iaolongbao like my children”之后,应填入 but 来构成完整的并列句。
flavors。
increasing。
which。
to。

Hello, everyone! If I could travel back to ancient times with one modern item, I'd bring a solar-powered flashli ght. It is a lighting device in which the solar panel turns light into electricity for storage when exposed to sunlight.
In ancient times, the methods of lighting were often limited to torches, candles, or oil lamps, which were incon venient and posed the risk of fire. However, a solar-powered flashlight would provide a clean and long-lasting sour ce of light, reducing the reliance on materials easy to catch fire. Therefore, it would enable ancient people to engag
e in a wider variety of activities, such as traveling at night or working in dark places.
Just imagine how amazed people would be to see such an useful device! Thank you!

Finally, the two getting ready, the Dance began. The gymnasium, decorated with lights and decorations, alive with excitement. As Kelsey and Derek entered, a hush fell over the crowd. The music started, and they took to the f loor. Derek, guided by Kelsey's gentle cues, moved with a confidence that surprised many. Their dance was a grac eful blend of elegance and joy, far from the clumsy steps everyone had anticipated. With each spin and step, they d rew cheers and applause from their classmates. By the end of their dance, they had not only captivated the audienc e but also broken the doubts and prejudices that had clouded the air before.
After the Dance, students gathered around Kelsey and Derek. Their faces showed admiration and respect. Wha t began as quiet whispers of surprise soon erupted into cheers of praise. Billy, who had earlier teased them, approac
hed with an awkward smile, sincerely extending an apology to both. Even Betty, Kelsey's best friend, was there, te ars glistening in her eyes as she hugged Kelsey tightly, expressing her regret for doubting her choice. The night en ded not just with a successful dance, but with transformed attitudes and newfound respect among peers. It was a ni ght thatDerek, Kelsey, and all their classmates would remember as a beautiful testament to acceptance and the pow er of kindness.
