Pinocchio(匹诺曹)may be just a children's fairy tale, but Spanish scientists at the University of Granada recently investigated the so-called “'Pinocchio effect”' and found that our noses don't grow when we tell a lie.
Dr.Emilio Gómez Milán and his team developed a lie detector test that used thermography(热影像技术)to tell if people were lying, and found that whenever participants in their research were being untruthful, the temperature of the tips of their noses dropped up to 1.2℃,while the temperature of their forehead increased up to 1.5℃.Scientists also found that drop in temperature at nose level actually caused it to slightly shrink(缩小),although the difference is undetected(未被发现的)by the human eye.
“One has to think in order to lie, which rises the temperature of the forehead,” Dr.Gomez Milan explained the findings.“At the same time we feel anxious, which lowers the temperature of the nose.”
For this study, researchers asked a number of 60 students to perform various tasks while being scanned by thermal imaging technology. One of these tasks involved calling a 3 to 4 minutes call to their parents, partner or a friend and telling a significant lie.Participants had to devise(设计)the lie by themselves during the call, and the thermal cameras picked up this “reverse Pinocchio effect” caused by the fluctuation(起伏)in temperature in the nose and forehead.“With this method we have achieved to increase accuracy and reduce the occurrence of ‘false positives’,something that is frequently with other methods such as the polygraph(测谎仪) ,” said Dr.Emilio Gómez Milán.
The thermal lie doctor has been the most reliable in the world,10% more than the popular polygraph.

A.Your nose gets longer.
B.Your nose becomes smaller.
C.Your temperature gets higher.
D.Your temperature remains stable.
B [细节理解题。根据第二段中“whenever participants in their research were being untruthful, the temperature of the tips of their noses dropped up to 1.2℃”及“Scientists also found that drop in temperature at nose level actually caused it to slightly shrink(缩小)”可知,参与者无论什么时候说谎,他们鼻尖的温度会下降多达1.2℃,科学家们也发现鼻尖温度的下降实际上会让鼻子稍微缩小,故选B项。]

A new research shows human activity is changing the sound of the Earth's oceans and seas.Scientists say the sound changes of our oceans, seas, and other waterways affect many marine(海洋的)animals—from very small shrimps to huge whales.
Sound travels very far underwater,Francis Juanes,an ecologist at the University of Victoria in Canada, told the Associated Press. For fish,he explained, sound is probably a better way to sense their environment than light.Sounds help fish and other marine animals survive and communicate with each other.Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters.
However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise is coming from shipping traffic, underwater exploration, and other noisy human activities. For many marine animals, their attempts to communicate are being masked(遮住)by sounds that humans have produced.Experts explain that masking happens when one or more noises in the water block sound important to a marine animal's living. The overall number of marine animals has gone down by about half since 1970.Some studies show the stress from human noise might also affect the immune system as well as reproductive health or behavior.“Imagine having to raise your kids in a place that's noisy all the time,” said Joe Roman,a marine ecologist at the University of Vermont.
“When people think of problems facing the ocean,we often think of climate change, plastics, and overfishing. But noise pollution is another thing we need to be monitoring(检测).Sound pollution may be easier to deal with than other ocean problems,”Scientist Juanes says.“If we make something for the ocean, think about how to make it quieter.”

It was a Saturday.Usually,Aman would be out playing with his friends. But today,he was busy in the kitchen.Since his mother was unwell,Aman had taken her place, preparing simple meals for his family. His little sister,Neelam, was the happiest.
“Aman, the dish you prepared for my lunch yesterday was so tasty that all my friends ate it up within minutes.I had to make do with eating their lunches,” said Neelam.
“Ha ha! Next time, remind me to prepare some extra for your friends as well,” said Aman.“I am happy that you have taken over the kitchen duties now.Imagine having to eat Dad's boring food for a whole week, like the bread he used to make for us last year when Mom had gone out of town!”said Neelam.
Dad,who had just walked into the kitchen, overheard Neelam's words and asked in mock(假装的)anger,“Who is complaining about my cooking skills?”
“Not complaining,Dad,just kidding,” said Neelam.
The three laughed.Aman then prepared tea for his parents and served it to them.
“Thank you,Aman, for helping Dad with the housework while I have been unwell,” said Mom.“I hope it has not been too much trouble for you.Hope you are not missing out on your schoolwork because of this.”
“Don't worry,Mom.You just relax.I have more than enough time to study in the evenings,” said Aman.
In a couple of days,Aman's mother felt better and took over the kitchen duties.
Aman continued to help around the kitchen by cutting the vegetables and preparing the soup.Mom taught him a few new recipes(菜谱).Even Neelam helped with whatever little she could like washing the vegetables and peeling(削皮)potatoes.
“Aman, now that I am well, you should start focusing on your studies again,” said Mom.

Paragraph 1:
A couple of months later,Aman's school organised a day-long picnic. The place was a few kilometers away from the city.It was quiet and beautiful. As the kids were enjoying themselves in nature, one of the teachers got a phone call.It was from the cooks, who were supposed to prepare the lunch.Their car had broken down and by the time they got there,it would be way past lunchtime. The teachers were very worried since they weren't skilled at cooking for a large number of people.
Paragraph 2:
While the teachers discussed what to do,Aman stepped forwards and said,“If you do not mind,I can help.” The teachers were all surprised. But seeing a few other kids also wanting to help, the teachers agreed that they could have a try.Aman then divided his friends into groups and gave each group a task.To make it more fun,Aman and his friends sang songs and played word games as they cooked. Before everyone knew it,lunch was ready! Even though it was simpler than the one planned for the picnic, everyone ate it with great enjoyment.
