[2025 山东青岛期末]I love to eat, but feeding others is my love language.
—The preface
When I was a little girl, I sat and watched my mom cook. I spent most of my childhood in the kitchen. Since then, I was interested in cooking. Before I could learn my mom's best dishes, I left for France to go to school in 2015.
When studying in France, I lived alone for the first time in my life. I was crazily homesick. So I called my mom and asked for the recipes for my favorite dishes. My mom didn't have any recipes. She grew up in the kitchen with her mom, too, and my grandma passed on her knowledge only (口头地). So it was my turn. Instead of following strict measurement (测量), I learned to cook by tasting and feeling.
After I graduated from college and moved to Washington D.C. in 2017, I made meals at home to ease my loneliness. And I always shared food with friends. Because my food was pretty good, my friends asked me for the recipe. Then I started my cooking blog in 2019.
At first, my blog was just a space for me to put what I had learned into writing. I didn't want the dishes I made to be mom's noodles and my dad's tomato soup to disappear. I wanted to write down every piece of advice I was given in detail. Now I try more dishes and create my own recipes. I'm not as strict with myself about making the dishes as I eat them. I just use seasonal material I like. My followers are growing and this makes me more confident in cooking.
The blog also increases my confidence at work and gives me a space to write about what I love. It connects me to new friends online. Most importantly, I mix the tradition that I've experienced with something new.
