I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.
24. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph
A. His good grades got him a good job. B. He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely.
C. His views on social values are well known. D. He is content with his scholastic achievements.
25. Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship
A. A helper. B. A judge. C. A monitor. D. A supporter.
26. What is the greatest accomplishment for the author
A. The contribution to volunteering. B. The success in exams.
C. The recovery of confidence in life. D. The work in community service.
27. Why does the author want to major in social work at university
A. To gain a well-paid job. B. To give his life a purpose.
C. To meet his grandparents’ expectations. D. To better help the disadvantaged.
C
The world has about 7,000 languages. Experts predict that as many as half of these may be at risk of disappearing by the end of this century. That would mean a language dies out every two weeks.
Members of the Siletz Indian tribe (部落) in the northwestern state of Oregon take pride in their language. Their language, they say, “is as old as time itself”. But today very few people can speak it fluently. In fact, you can count the number of fluent speakers on one hand.
More than 10,000 words can be found in the Siletz Online Talking Dictionary. Professor Harrison has also posted talking dictionaries for seven other highly endangered (濒危的) languages from around the world. He says technology can not only spread the influence of major languages but also help save endangered ones. Smartphone applications, YouTube videos and Facebook pages have all become digital tools for language experts.
Mr Harrison and a researcher in Oregon have mapped areas of endangered languages. One is the Pacific Northwest in the United States. Others include the upper Amazon basin, Siberia and northern Australia.
In Canada’s far north, the Inuit people are struggling to protect their native language, Inuktitut. Part of the effort involves (涉及) Microsoft. The company is translating terms in its Windows operating system and Office software into Inuktitut.
Nowadays so many people will spend their whole day sitting in front of a computer. If you’re sitting in front of your computer in English all day, that just reinforces(强化)English. If you’re now using Inuktitut, it is reinforcing that this is your language. Microsoft has also worked with language experts in New Zealand, Spain and Wales to translate its software into Maori, Basque, Catalan and Welsh.
28 Why are the people of the Siletz Indian tribe proud of their language
A. It’s easily mastered. B. It’s widely spoken nowadays.
C. It has a long history. D. It has scientific value.
29. What does Harrison think of technology according to Paragraph 3
A. It changes the way young people learn a language.
B. It makes learning a language a fashionable thing.
C. It makes it possible to master a language quickly.
D. It helps protect the endangered languages.
30. Why does Microsoft translate its software into Inuktitut
A. To make Inuktitut spoken worldwide. B. To learn other languages conveniently.
C. To help spread the use of Microsoft software. D. To strengthen the use of Inuktitut.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. The effects of modern technology on languages.
B. Efforts made to save languages in danger of dying out.
C. Some languages with the most speakers worldwide.
D. The difference Harrison made to the Siletz Indian tribe.
D
Only humans speak using words. But all animals can communicate in one way or another. Maybe you have heard about the way bees dance around to send messages to each other and the way dogs make loud noises in different ways to give warnings.
Do you know that animals can communicate through infrasonic (次声的) sounds This is how it works:
Humans hear low sounds like thunder rumbling (雷声轰鸣) in the sky. But we don’t hear sounds lower than these. However, elephants can hear many lower sounds, and they use them to communicate with each other. This is known as infrasound.
Another surprising thing about infrasound is that it travels over several kilometres. Sounds which have a higher pitch(音调), like the ones people can hear, don’t travel through walls, leaves, trees and so on. And that is why we can’t hear sounds from more than 100 metres away. But infrasound is much ‘stronger’, and things like grass and trees have no effect on it. Because of that it can travel much farther. Elephants can hear infrasonic calls from four kilometres away!
There have been reports that people were watching elephants feeding or resting when the elephants all ran away for no reason at all. It is clear that they heard a warning call from a long way away, but the people didn’t hear the sound. In places like a zoo where you can get nearer to animals, it is a bit easier to sense when infrasonic sounds are made. When you stand near mother elephants with their babies in a zoo you may notice a weak rumbling in the air every few minutes — not loud or strong, but clearly noticeable. They are infrasonic calls — the mother elephants “talking” to their babies.
32. Why does the author mention bees and dogs in Paragraph 1
A. To show humans are special. B. To introduce animal communication.
C. To compare different kinds of animals. D. To tell us an interesting story about animals.
33. We can learn from the passage that infrasound ________.
A. belongs to high sounds B. can travel longer distances
C. is higher than the sound of thunder D. gets weaker when traveling through walls
34. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. The people watching also heard the warning call.
B. The people could hear lower sounds than elephants.
C. The elephants were frightened by the people nearby.
D. The elephants communicated through infrasonic sounds.
35. What could be the best title for the passage
A. Wild Elephants B. The Animal World C. Talking Through Infrasound D. Dog Communication

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The oral exam (口试) is a long-held tradition in many schools and subjects. 36 Students must then answer properly, using materials they have learned in preparation for the exam. Showing plentiful knowledge of the subject results in passing the exam or an excellent grade.
37 As part of the completion of a program at the undergraduate or graduate levels, students might need to prove their knowledge and understanding of a subject area. Many science majors finish Bachelor’s studies with oral exams, or a particular program may require oral and written exams that show how a student has taken in all the materials learned in a four-year period. Usually study guides are available for these exams. 38
One valuable tip for students to succeed is to practice before the exam. 39 But by answering questions classmates or family ask them students can do as many practices as possible. On the day of the exam, students should dress plainly but respectfully, and in keeping with any dress requirements.
Students taking these exams should remember how much they have learned, which is hopefully quite a lot. 40 When waiting outside the test room, taking a deep breath and reminding themselves that the oral exam is a nice way to show off how much knowledge has been learned from teachers can help overcome stressful moments. Also, any other relaxation techniques that help can be used.
A. It raises questions to students in spoken form.
B. Behaving properly can earn students some favor.
C. They may not be able to predict all the questions.
D. Usually, students performing well are experienced.
E. Nervousness can even make the smartest student get stuck.
F. There are many examples in college where oral exams are used.
G. Therefore, prepared students tend not to be surprised by what they’re asked.

推理判断题。文章第一段内容“But all animals can communicate in one way or another. (但是所有的动物都能以这样或那样的方式交流)”为该段主旨句,由此可推知,“Maybe you have heard about the way bees dance around to send messages to each other and the way dogs make loud noises in different ways to give warnings.(也许你已经听说过蜜蜂跳舞互相传递信息的方式,以及狗用不同的方式发出响亮的声音来发出警告的方式)”作为举例例证,是用来支持该段主旨句的,即,用人们比较熟悉例子介绍动物交流的方式。

故选A。

M: Good morning, students! The Garden Club is pleased to announce that we will hold our first meeting of the year on Friday. Please come to Room 207 to learn more about the exciting work that we are doing at school and in the community (社区).
The Garden Club was established to educate students about growing food. The food we grow is healthy and organic (有机的). We donate most of what we grow to local food assistance programs. However, as a member of the club, you will always be able to take some of our extra food home to your family, too.
If you come to our first meeting, you can try some of the tomatoes that we grew during the summer. All students are welcome! Please note that first-year students will not be allowed to work in community garden, but they can always work in our school garden. We will begin planting cucumbers and cabbages in the school garden next Monday. Please sign up for our club today!
